GASTON, MAYFIELD

Joyce G. Reece Tue Jan 4 19:40:47 2000
Nancy E. MAYFIELD married Thomas L. GASTON in McMinn County abt 1880. They had 10 or 11 children. (Tho. remarried after Nancy passed and had 4 or 5 more children...15 in total). One of those children was Isaac "Dock" GASTON. Joseph GASTON was a brother to Dock. We think Joseph ran a butcher shop in Chattanooga and we hear a "legend" that says that Dock was involved in a violent physical confrontation in the butcher shop which resulted in a death. (He is said to have killed someone with a beef bone.....honest!!) We are looking for descendents of Thomas L and Nancy who still reside in the Chattanooga area or would have information concerning this branch of our family. We have a cousin in Oklahoma who is descended from Dock and has searched for a long time for this info. Any ideas will be great.

LEVAN, TEAGUE

William Link Levan Sun Feb 13 15:35:55 2000
In response to Nov 6, 1999 querry by a Debbie Levan, I am posting 3 generations of a James C/L Levan (used both middle initials for name of Kelse/Celse). Debbie did not mention a time frame (years etc or anything about her James C. Levan in her query)
I am one of several Levan researchers of the Levans of Warren, Grundy and Marion County, Tn and I am reasonably sure that many also made the trip or locale change to Chattanooga in Hamilton Co., TN. I can remember visiting an aunt of my Fathers named Lil in the city of Chattanooga in about 1955.
An out line descendant tree of my James C/L Levan follows: I don't know if he is yours or not. I also have ancestors back to early 1800s in Warren Co., TN (James Benjamin Levan, I [of TN} who settled on the Head of Collins River on Highway 56 (just south of McMinville about 10 miles).

BROWN, CAMP, JOHNSON, McPHERSON, THOMPSON, WALLS, WEST

Peggy Camp Puckett Sun Feb 27 19:31:59 2000
My greatgreatgrandmother was Betty JOHNSON. I estimate her dob to be around 1840-50. She married a Mr. THOMPSON, I believe in TN. They had one child, my greatgrandmother, Mary (Molly) Magdalene THOMPSON, b. Apr 11 1865, d. Dec 19 1950. Molly married first Henry Clay BROWN from Roane Co., TN. Next she married Wesley Fara CAMP. She was his second wife. His first wife was Marsella WALLS. Family stories say Betty JOHNSON was a laundress for the army during the Civil War. After Mr. THOMPSON's death (maybe the Civil War?), Betty next married a Mr. WEST. They had 3 children: Sallie, Lizzie and Jim West. Lizzie married a Mr. Lewis and they had a son named John Lewis. Sallie married an Ed McPHERSON. They had a restaurant in Chattanooga on Main and Market Streets called "McPhersons". Don't know the time period, but probably around the turn of the century and later. Although Betty and Molly were probably born somewhere else, all of these people were in the Chattanooga area after the turn of the century, maybe also before.
Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has information on any of these people, including information on the restaurant. - Peggy Camp Puckett

CAMP, WALLS

Peggy Camp Puckett Sun Feb 27 19:45:34 2000
Looking for information on my greatgrandmother, Marsella WALLS. Marsella was b. in AL. around 1860. She m. Wesley Fara CAMP on Nov. 10 1879 in Hamilton Co., TN. They appeared on the 1880 US Census for Floyd Co., GA in the household of Wesley's father, Hosea Milton CAMP. Marcella died sometime after 1892, leaving young children. Her date of death and place of burial are not known. She is a real mystery in our family. I've heard that she came from a very wealthy family and was disowned when she married Wesley. He was said to be very handsome. One of my aunts told me that Marcella was one of 3 sisters and they were so pretty they were called the "Three Belles". One sister's name was Georgia. My aunt said that Marsella's 2 sisters had a saloon in downtown Chattanooga. Don't know the name. Time period was probably from 1890 - 1920 or so. My aunt said her father told her he had family buried in Citizen Cemetery in Chattanooga. Also, Marsella's family were said to live in a mansion with many servants, including a butler.
So one would think there would be history of a WALLS family in the Chattanooga area, but so far I haven't found any. Would surely apprecistrong>BANKS, CLAYTON

BROWN - JOHNSON - McPHERSON - THOMPSON - WALLS - WEST

Peggy Camp Puckett Fri Mar 3 16:09:02 2000
This is especially directed to Chattanooga natives: (1) Does anyone remember a restaurant in downtown Chattanooga on Main or Market Streets, named McPhersons? The time would have been in the early 1900's, maybe 1910 to 1930 or 40. (2) Does anyone remember a saloon on Market Street run by two sisters, probably in the same time period? The reason I am asking is to get a lead on some of my family. My greatgrandmother's half-sister and her husband owned McPhersons. And my greatgrandmother's two sisters ran the saloon. I know probably there's no one alive now who would personally remember these places, but maybe some one has a book of history of the city, or remembers hearing talk about these places. Better still, maybe there is a member of the McPherson, Walls, West, Thompson, Johnson or Brown family that would know something. Please get in touch if this sounds familiar.

OTT - BROWN

A. Ryan Thu Mar 30 17:24:28 2000
I am seeking any information about Macy BROWN who married George William OTT. They had two children, Anne Elizabeth Ott (b 1-20-1920 to 10-18-1988) and Henry Eugene "Bud" Ott (born between 1921-1923);(he was Anne's younger brother). Anne was born in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN. Macy was placed in a sanitarium. George moved and then remarried to Louise HUGGINS when Anne was about 3 or 4 years old, in Rome, Floyd County, GA. The only other thing that I've been told about the family was that George named Anne after his mother, also Anne Elizabeth (??? maiden name); and named Henry after his brother. I don't know the parentage of Macy BROWN or the name of the sanitarium she was placed into. George's father may have also been named George William OTT, but I'm not sure. Also, there was a family myth that one great grandfather was born on the boat over from Germany. I assume this was George but can not confirm this. Also, no name of the boat his family immigrated over on. I'd be really grateful for any help in looking up more information about these families. Thanks, andrearyan1@hotmail.com

SANDERS

Mary L. Sanders Fri Mar 31 09:25:42 2000
My husband's ancestor, Nahum SANDERS, d. Stokes Co. 1795. His son Arden is my husband's line. Many of Nahum's descendants were named Arden and moved to Tennessee. I found an Arden SANDERS on the 1850 census and am trying to see if he is connected with the other Ardens in our family. Other common given names in this line are Benjamin, Jesse, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy and Martha.
Any information appreciated. Would like to exchange info - thanks Mary Sanders
