I have started trying to trace my PICKETT family lineage. I can vaguely remember as a child that we had relatives in Marion, Sequatchie, and Hamilton Counties. My g grandfather was John Lewis (Louis) PICKETT and was born about 1858. Place unknown. He was married to Archa SCHRUDDER, who was born about 1860, place unknown. They had a son John Lewis (Louis) PICKETT and three daughters Amy, Kate, and Mary. I believe John and Archa (ie) were living in Hamilton County TN (Sawyer community) in 1880. The next information on my grandfather is from the 1900 census. He was living at the Hamilton County Industrial Farm and School (Bonny Oaks). He was 20 and working as an attendant there. I always heard that he was an orphan ( maybe as a result of the yellow fever epidemic around 1878) and was an living there prior to his working there. He married Clara Ruth HILL, born in Mississippi, about 1879. They had eight children, Amy Louise, b. 1902 d. 1975; John William b. 1904 d. 1907; Reed B. b. 1907 d. 1944; Margaret Francis b. 1910 d. unknown; Clara Ruth b. 1914; Lela b. 1916 d. 1988; Mildred Alta, b. 1919 d. 1958; Thelma b. 1921 d. 1995. Can you help me make any connections?

Ron McCandless Fri Jul 27 14:26:57 2001
Need the location and date built of each Hamilton Co Courthouse because:
Mary A. McCANDLESS / McCANLESS was probably the wife of Anderson McCANDLESS who was on the tax list of Marion Co TN in 1836 with William McCANDLESS in Dist 6 on the county line of Hamilton Co. Anderson had died or disappeared before the census of 1840 and Mary was listed as Pollyan McCANDLESS with her children. Her son David lived in Hamilton Co TN until at least 1868. Most of the family had moved to AR by that time.
George W. CHAPMAN married Mary's daughter Cansida/Canzoda abt. 1860 and Mary moved with them to Logan Co AR where they appear in the 1880 census in Logan Co AR. Alex and John enlisted in the 16th AR Inf. in Johnson Co AR (just north of Logan Co.) in 1861.
The family stories of Cherokee lineage are remarkably consistent between the three known branches that were separated for the past 100 years. One branch, the CHAPMANs, returned to Chattanooga for a lawsuit to reclaim some land that had never been purchased but the claim was that a courthouse of Hamilton Co had been built upon that land.
Upon arrival in Chattanooga, Cansida took ill suddenly and died. George had no interest in the land so he loaded the children and his wife's body to return to AR. The trial was never held but this was between 1880 and 1901.
Does anyone have some kind of history (other than Goodspeed's) that would show the time/location of each courthouse?
NOTE: This is a research query, not proven facts. Do not take them into your files as fact or you will never be able to recall the errors that go into others data.

I am looking for court records for Hamilton County, Chattanooga TN back in the 1870's that might tell me why Alexander WILKINSON was an inmate there. I found a land entry in Wisconsin from September of 1878 in which he sold land to his sister in exchange for $300. The record states that he was in the Chattanooga jail at the time. If the courthouse doesn't have the records from that era does a historical society have the records? Any help would be much appreciated.

I have posted here before. I have new information that hopefully someone, anyone can connect with.
Alfred L. HARRELL / HERRELL b: 1/13/1885 d: 3/20/1934
Married: Mary Emaline Sims b: 1/8/1895 d: 5/16/1958
They had the following children:
William C, Marion Wesley, Florence, Amanda Jane, James Arthur,Virgie Elizabeth and Gertrude Ruth HERRELL.
Here is what I have on Alfred:
Father's name: Willy (don't know if that is short for William or not). Mother's name unknown.
It has been told to me that the mother committed suicide by jumping from some bridge. And one of his brother's allowed himself to be run over by a train in Jellico, 15 years prior to Alfred's death.
At the time of his death, he was working for the Hood Brick Yard in Daisy. They believe it was a homicide, since he was shot "twice".
If anyone has any information, please email me. I did go to the library in Chattanooga, TN. Looked up census. Came across an Alfred HERRELL born in 1/1885. But the birthdate didn't match and he had two wifes that didn't match either. It is kind of off to have an Alfred HERRELL born in the same month, with his Dad being of the same name, but not be the same person... Figures!
I have found nothing but what I have written. Someone has to connect somewhere. Please check your records, I am feeling like he never "existed". LOL. ninbo143@home.com
