Does anyone have material on the Hamilton Co., TN Cates families. I am searching for a Mary Jane CATES, b ca 1857 Hamilton Co., TN. Married Samuel H. STOVER ca 1879-1880 Hamilton Co. Have all the material I can find on the CATES families from the area and can find no one who claims this particular Mary Jane. Have the material by Elizabeth CATE MANLEY and Aurelia CATE DAWSON, and researched thoroughly and can find no CATES family Mary Jane fits into. It is possible she was a LINE, who was possibly taken in by a CATES family after the Civil War. There was a Mary Jane LINE, whose mother died in 1861, her father died in 1864 in the War, leaving all his children orphans. I believe relatives helped raise these children.

Any information re: James will be greatly appreciated.

MULLIN(S) / MULLENS

Looking for any info on Swift MULLIN (which has also been spelled MULLINS and MULLENS.) He was known to have homesteaded 200 acres of land in Tennessee, near Beans Creek in 1808, which he sold to an Allen Brown for $1,800 on March 13, 1818. He married his first wife Anna in 1804 in Georgia, and married Betsey BEAN later, then even later Eleanor IRWIN (in Arkansas.) It is believed his father's name was Flower (...yes, I know, but that's what I have) and his grandfather was supposedly named William (as was his first son.) They originated in North Carolina; possibly Rockingham or Guilford County. Any info would be wonderfully appreciated! Thank you!

I am looking for any information about James Estel Phillips (possibly known as a Senior) who lived in Chattanooga, North Chattanooga, Brainard and Falling Water (about 15 miles North of Chattanooga) off and on for most of his life. He died in 1967. His wife was Helen May Portwood (still alive), and they had one son, James Estel Lee Phillips, Jr. who is also alive and is the person submitting this query.
We believe Mr. Phillips, Sr. mother's surname was Lamb...we do not know his father's full name although we believe his surname was Phillips. He had three sisters - Lilly, Mary and Tessie - all of whom are dead, but all of which also lived in and around the Chattanooga area all of their lives. We also know that Mr. Phillips was married once prior to his marriage to Helen Portwood and he had two daughters from that marriage whose names were Mildred and Virginia. Again, the two daughters also lived in and around the Chattanooga area for most of their lives. We have checked all family records with no success beyond what I have listed here, so any information of any kind would certainly be appreciated.

KEITH - HARPER

Linda McDaniel Smith Tue Jun 23 16:31:50 1998
My great-grandmother's name was ANNIE KEITH, born March 28, 1886, probably in Hamilton County. She had a sister named MARY KEITH and a brother named GEORGE KEITH. Their mother's name was also ANNIE KEITH, but she later remarried to THOMAS SHUBURG on August 15, 1898, in Hamilton County. From this 2nd marriage was born their half brother, TOM SHUBURG. My great-grandmother Annie (b. 1886), was the wife of JAMES HARPER who was married before to SARAH WALKER in Hamilton County. Don't know what happened to Sarah and have never found a marriage record for Annie and James Harper (also known as JIM -- or "BANTY" because he was small.) My grandmother, KATIE LOU FRANCES HARPER, was born to Jim and Annie Keith Harper on January 26, 1904, in Soddy-Daisy, Hamilton County, Tennessee. The marriage (if such there was) between Annie Keith and Jim Harper did not last long enough for many of the Harpers to even remember her. However, one of Jim Harper's daughters by his former marriage remembered my grandmother Katie (her half-sister), as "Frances". My grandmother lived with "Granny Annie Shuburg" for a while until her mother Annie came and got her and moved to Alabama with ANDREW GILLIHAN, a brick mason who lived in Hamilton County in 1910. His family lived in Alabama. Annie Keith Gillihan died on my 20th birthday in Blount County, Alabama, January 18, 1968. I know nothing about the Keiths other than what I've specified here except that on a census, Annie's father was listed as born in West Virginia. Does anyone know who was the father of the Keith children: Annie, Mary and George Keith? Does anyone remember the family? I have talked with some of the Harpers but only one even knew my grandmother existed, much less know anything about the Keiths.. Granny Annie Shuburg died sometime in the late 1920s. ANY information would be appreciated.

I am searching for my ancestor Lucy Jane Irons. It is believed she is part American Indian - Cherokee. My grandmother once told me she was adopted about the age of 10 from an orphanage. When I asked my Aunt about this she said she remembers meeting the grandson of Sitting Bull If anyone could help me locate her or for that matter the orphanage around in the mid 1800's it would be greatly appreciated

TITTLE - ROGERS

Kathleen Burns Mon Jun 29 13:39:29 1998
I am researching a James M. TITTLE b.27 Feb 1847 d. 29 June 1929 in Vinita Craig co. Okla. he married a Anna ROGERS b. 30 June 1847 D. 26 July 1892 in Vinita Craig Co. Okla. I have been told there are quite a few TITTLE's in Hamilton Co., Tn. Since the name is not a real common name I thought that possibly they may have come from here. He is listed on the Dawes Rolls and states he was born in Indian Territory. I know that some Cherokee Indians came from Tennessee. Can anyone help me with this surname and finding his family. It is hard to find out anything from my family members because of a falling out in the family and they scattered. My mother's family ended up in California and when James TITTLE's daughter married she eventually ended up in Dallas, Texas with her husband and grown children. Any help would be appreciated/
