DOUGHTY - MILLER - TURNER - MARTIN

Suzanne Haley Thu Oct 24 05:13:01 2002
Buried under other documents in the Tennessee State Archives, I found an estate document related to Pleasant HALEY of Hamilton County. See summary below. I'd like to correspond with anyone who's family ties in to these DOUGHTYs!-----Summary from 112 pages of handwritten documents from a DOUGHTY case that went to the Tennessee Supreme Court. Here's SOME of what it revealed.

James DOUGHTY died intestate in Meigs County in 1855 and there were disputes among the heirs.
James DOUGHTY had first lived with a "certain Ann TURNER" and there were three children Pleasant TURNER (who was ADM. of his father's estate), Margret TURNER and Armisted TURNER and Elan (later spelled Eleanor) TURNER for whom James DOUGHTY legally went to court and legally changed their names to Pleasant DOUGHTY, Margret DOUGHTY, Armisted DOUGHTY and Eleanor DOUGHTY.

Alfred TURNER was also an heir?

Margret DOUGHTY married a JESTER (? difficult to discern spelling) and her husband was dead in the late 1850's and she was a resident of Alabama. Pleasant DOUGHTY was a resident of Hamilton County at this time. Armisted DOUGHTY was deceased, but the father of James Armistead DOUGHTY, who was under the care of a guardian, J. H. Borwn. Eleanor DOUGHTY was the wife of W. O. MARTIN and they had children Matilda J. MARTIN and Harriet E. MARTIN.

James DOUGHTY was later married to Rachal, and their children were James DOUGHTY, Thompson DOUGHTY (died before Sept, 1857), Martin DOUGHTY (died before Oct, 1857), and Ruth DOUGHTY( who married William HUTCHESON).

There seemed to be a huge amount of land involved in the dispute and in one place (a portion of?) it is referred to as "the MILLER farm, land South of the Hiwassee River."
I hope this helps someone. Suzanne Haley

CUTLER - WILLIAMS

Karen Novak Sat Oct 26 23:27:01 2002
I have been searching for Jacob Jefferson CUTLER. He was buried beside a river with Spring in the name. His brother-in-law Jacob WILLIAMS buried him in December of 1863. They were from Texas and served in the Confederate Army. There is a record in the book of Confederate and Union Corespondence, that states that a J.J. CUTLER was captured in Rossville, Georgia.
I have been trying to find more about my 3rd great-grandfather.

The families can be located on the 1850 Knox County, TN. Census and the Census of Davidson Co., TN. of 1860. One of their sons was also named George (born about 1849). I am told that my HARRIS line is also related to the HARRIS Family of Ooltewah, TN.

I am looking for info on the SWANN family of Soddy-Daisy, TN, dating from the mid-late 1800s or anytime for that matter. Among my ancestors are this line:

Sarah Cassie SWANN, believed to be born in Sevierville in the 1880-1890 time frame, whose family is believed to have moved to Soddy-Daisy. She married Herbert Carl JOHNSON (my grandfather) and lived her adult life near and what is now in Huntsville, AL, with him.

Samuel Buchanon SWANN, her father, and Samuel SWANN, his father. Samuel SWANN, the elder, is believed to be the same Major Samuel SWANN who was given a commission by the Governor of Virginia and then went to TN.

I am interested in what cemetaries or other potential places to research there might be in the Soddy-Daisy area.
Any info or help whatsoever on this would be GREATLY appreciated.
