Gent;

I understand that the resolution recommend Old Hickory as a fit person for our next Mountain leader lies on your table. What does this mean? Or has he any enemies in the Senate? Pray call it up and one of you make the motion and the other second it and try its fate. I hope that there will not be one disputing voice. It ought to pass unanimously. I know and hope will.

Your friend in haste

S. Williams to James Chisum, November 16 1823
Nashville to Murfreesboro, TN.

Dear sir;

Sometime ago I gave Mr. M. GANOCK three or four plots on which I paid the registers fee for the purpose of getting out grants and he tells me that he sent them on to Murfreesboro long since. But they have not been returned to him. One of them is my own name for 148 1/2 acres 2 are in the name of RICHARD MANSILL the quantity of a res. No. recollected but lies on MARTINS Creek both small tracts. One tract in the name of WILLIAM WHEELER lies on the waters of the dry fork Flying Creek about 40 acres. I believe I must therefore ask the favor of you to get the grants, pay the suretary and bring them home with you. I will repay you on sight.

I am on my way to Clarksville and expect to return in about a week or sooner. Should be glad to hear if anything of an interesting nature has transpired in the Legislature, particularly on the subject of land, Banks etc.

I have not seen your family since you left home but lately heard they are well. As I shall expect to have the pleasure of seeing you shortly after your return home conclude with my best wishes for your happiness.
