INSTRUCTIONS
This index identifies each head of household by name, age, sex, Civil District, and page. Herein a "household" is considered to consist of husband, wife, and single children. Additional surnames are listed solely by page. Included are all persons other than the above. Examples are grandparents, parents, married children, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, in-laws, cousins, wards, and boarders. Although multiples of each additional surname may be found on a page, they are included only once per page. Boundaries of each Civil District changed over the years. They may not be the same or even similar for any two censuses. No spelling corrections are made to the original listings. The Census taker's spelling is used "as is" subject to my ability to read the hand- writing. If you cannot find a name, consider other similar-sounding spellings. Since names were often written phonetically, i.e. "as they sound", they can be spelled quite differently than they sound, and may be found elsewhere in the index. In most listings, the Census taker listed surname first, but in a few instances it was probably shown last. Where it is obvious, the correct sequence is shown. Where it is not obvious, the person is listed both ways with no indication of which is correct. The Census taker hand-numbered each sheet, generally starting anew for each day or Civil District. Alternate sheets are also identified by a stamped number located at the top of the sheet. "Page" means those sheets having stamped numbers, with "-A" being the stamped, numbered sheet, and "-B" the following unnumbered sheet. The Census people numbered two sheet 89's, i.e. "89" and "89A", shown herein as "89" and "89A" respectively. Titles such as "Dr." and "Mrs." are listed, but are not considered in alphabetizing. Information is shown as "?" where indeterminate. The following lists the Civil Districts and corresponding microfilm pages.
