Joseph Rogers (1794-1833), an Irishman from Cook's Town, Ireland, was a clerk for Thomas Amis about 1785. He eloped with Mary Amis, daughter of Thomas, in 1786 and they settled on Crockett's Creek. The elopement occurred while Thomas Amis was serving in the North Carolina Legislature. Joseph gave the land for Rogersville to be established. He also in 1813 gave the land for the McMinn Academy to be built.
