A Bit of History of Our Organization

Hawkins County Genealogical & Historical Society began in September 1983 with 7 people present. Dues were set and officers were elected and plans were set in motion for writing a charter, starting a society publication, and deciding on a project that would relate to our purpose of preserving records of Hawkins County.

In addition to preserving Hawkins County records, it was the aim of the Society to make these and other historical records available to the public. As Hawkins County was the crossroads of immigration from the east coast to the western territories and states, we have purchased books and microfilm recording the history and genealogical information of the predominate states involved.

Our quarterly publication, DISTANT CROSSROADS, grew from 4 pages to its current size of 32 pages. With the revenue from the sale of our own publications, we have donated more than $18,000 to date to the H. B. Stamps Memorial Library in Rogersville, Tennessee. We have spent approximately $13,000 for shelving and equipment, such as microfilm readers, for the library.

HCG&HS is a registered, nonprofit organization. Anyone may obtain a copy of the HCG&HS Charter at the Hawkins County Registers office in the court house annex, Charter Book 6, page 33.

The Hawkins County Genealogical & Historical Society is an affiliate member of East Tennessee Historical Society. We cooperate with many other societies by exchanging quarterly journals. We donate a copy of all our publications to the Tennessee State Archives and U. S. Library of Congress. Members participate by submitting queries and donating material to be published in DISTANT CROSSROADS and to be placed in the library. Many have authored & donated family history books to the library. Copies of all DISTANT CROSSROADS have been bound and placed in the library.

HCG&HS is a volunteer organization, with limited resources. Members can post queries in DISTANT CROSSROADS or on the website Bulletin Board pages. Please join us by filing out a Membership Application.
