PFLANZE FAMILY FROM GERMANY TO BLOUNT CO. TN

In 1869, Charles Christian Pflanze (1841-1916) came to Maryville, TN and
soon thereafter established a cabinet making shop and furniture store
close to the Court House, then on Broadway. In the early years, much of
the furniture was made in the shop. He was married in Maryville to
Louisa Bulow who died in December 1870. In 1873, Mary, Louisa's sister,
came south from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and she and Charles were married in
Knoxville First Lutheran Church. All three were born in Mecklenburg,
Germany and emigrated from there to Milwaukee in 1863 and 1866 with
sisters and parents.

Charles' parents were Henry Pflanze born about 1807 in Germany and
Magdalena Schroeder born 1802 in Moltenow, Mecklenburg, Germany. They
were married in 1830. She died before 1863 in Germany. Charles'
siblings were Sophia Pflanze born 1838 who married Johann Jarchow and
Wilhelmine Marie Pflanze who was born 1845 and married to Hans Tank in
Milwaukee.

Both the Pflanze and the Bulow families came from farming communities.
Charles was a school teacher but his real love was for the soil. Mary
also had a love for tilling and preserving the land. In 1884, a
downtown fire destroyed their combination home, shop, and store. The
shop and store were rebuilt but they moved their home to the Bungalow
area.

Both the Bulow and the Pflanze families emigrated because they felt that
the semi-
socialist form of land care and ownership by the Barony and consequent
semi-serfdom in Mecklenburg was too restrictive. Emigration to the USA
was seen by them and their neighbors as a way to a new land and
citizenship. Charles came to East Tennessee for health reasons. A
milder climate and higher elevation than Milwaukee was recommended by
his doctor.

Charles and Mary had four children as follows:
1. Charles Pflanze born 1875 in Maryville TN and died in 1948 in St.
Louis, MO.
He was married to Ruth Moulden. Charles moved to St. Louis where he
married and entered the envelope manufacturing business.
2. Ludwig P. Pflanze born 1876 and died 10-28-1934 and is buried in
Magnolia Cemetery in Maryville, TN. He married Mary Kennedy. Ludwig
and his wife became owners and managers of Montvale Springs Hotel until
their deaths in 1933 and 1934.
3. Robert Pflanze born 12-26-1879 and died 3-29-1947. He was married
to Johnnie McReynolds.
*4. Otto Paul Pflanze, Sr. born 1885 in Maryville and died 1944.
Buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Maryville. He was married to Katrine
Mills.

In his later years, Charles Christian closed his furniture store and
established Cherokee Manufacturing company making oak dining tables
which were widely distributed in Tennessee and the adjoining states.
Charles died in 1916 and the lumber mill shut down in 1917 due to the
war. In 1919 Robert and Otto reopened the firm as Cherokee Lumber
Company supplying the area with lumber and millwork. The 107 year
association of the Pflanze family with the wood working industry in
Blount Co. ended with the retirement of Charles Bulow Pflanze, grandson
of the founder from Cherokee Lumber Company.

The children of Otto Paul Pflanze, Sr. and Katrine Mills are as follows:

1. Eleanor Pflanze
2. Charles Bulow Pflanze
3. Otto Paul Pflanze, Jr.
