JOHN "RACCOON" MILLER AND FAMILY
(This info was left in about 1950 by Will Henderson Thomas, Jr. a
teacher and historian of Union County. )
John "Raccoon" Miller was born in Newberry Co, SC about 1749. His
father, John Miller, came from Great Britain. The elder John is said to
have been killed in the Revolutionary War and is named on the monument
at Guilford Court House in NC. Rebecca Miller, wife of James Rice was a
sister to "Raccoon" Miller. Helen Topping Miller says that "Raccoon"
refugeed into Tennessee Country. One source says he was only 16 when he
married Eve Whitener "a German girl" in 1776. This would have made his
birthdate 1760. A John Miller shod horses for Sevier and shelby on
October 5, 1780 at Shelving Rock across Roan Mountain from Sycamore
Shoals when the men were marching on King's Mountain. A German family
lived in that vicinity but their name was "Weidener". However, in 1779,
we find that "Raccoon" Miller was a Captain under Col. Joseph Martin in
Gen. Evan Shelbys raid on Chicamauga. These men descended the river in
flat boats, destroyed the boats near chattanooga, dealt havoc to the
Indians and returned overland keeping to the north and west of the
Tennessee River. Undoubtedly on this return trip, Capt. Miller say
Raccoon Valley Station three miles below the present town of
Maynardville, TN. His home stood where Jeff Wood had a potato patch in
recent years. (This is written on Sept. 10, 1950). In 1791, the
Knoxville Gazette, still published at Rogersville until 1791 carried an
item about Capt. John Miller of Hawkins County experimenting with silk
cultures. The region was Hawkins County until Knox County was created
in 1792. it became Union county in 1856.
