(Will Thomas, Jr. was not certain of his ancestors and in 1950 was under
the impression that the father of George Slater Thomas was a John
Thomas, son of Isaac, son of William, son of Thomas who came from
Wales. At some point in time, he scratched the name of John off as the
father of George Slater and put the name Jacob down. This is where his
account begins. The * beside a name indicates that this person's line
will follow. Remember, Will Thomas did not have the access to all the
records that we have now. Let this be the basis of your

JACOB THOMAS
Jacob Thomas was born in 1752 in Cumberland Co, PA and died in 1822 in
Sullivan Co, TN. He married Louisa Schultz in 1777. Their children are
as follows:
1. John Thomas born 1778 married Susan Weaver 11-24-1801. They settled
in McMinn Co. TN.
2. Adam Thomas born 1784 (IGI says 4-18-1794) and died 11-23-1866. He
was married to Elizabeth McNew born 4-21-1796 and died 1856.
3. Isaac Thomas born 11-9-1791 and died 4-21-1882. He married Rebecca
Barb born 1-6-1796 and died 2-19-1882. They settled in Claiborne Co.
They are buried in Thomas Cemetery in Powell Valley.
4. William Thomas born 1793
*5. George Slater Thomas born 1795 and died 1867. He married Catherine
Ingles in 1818
6. Jonathan Thomas born 1-25-1800 and died 1-16-1864 in McMinn Co. He
married Jane Carmack who lived from 1800-1883.
7. Jacob Thomas, Jr. born 1802 married a Rebecca (?) Susong
8. Mary "Polly" Thomas married Jacob Shrite
9. Elizabeth Thomas married a John Weaver and lived in McMinn Co, TN

11. Frederick Thomas born 1805 married to a Hannah Worley born 1807

GEORGE SLATER THOMAS
George Slater Thomas was born in 1795 at Martin's Station, Rose Hill,
VA. He died in 1867 in Claiborne Co, TN. He married Catherine Ingles
in 1818. She was born about 1796 in Virginia and died 1887. She is
buried in Taylor Cemetery in Claiborne Co, TN. Their children are:
1. John Thomas who settled in Scott Co, VA
2. Isaac Thomas who married an Albright and settled in Arkansas
* 3. Alvin Thomas who was born in about 1824 in Rose Hill, Lee Co, VA
and died October 1862. He was married to a Mary Ann Baldwin.
4. Mary Thomas who married a John Hopkins
5. Susannah Thomas who married William Harris. Her mother eventually
lived with them.
6. William Thomas who married Almeda Sowder.
7. Pleasant Thomas who married Mary Ann Davison
8. Elizabeth who married a Richard Nunn.
9. Marion Thomas who married Zena Mayne.
* 10. Henry who was born 2-24-1827 and died 5-2-1871. He married
Sidney Elizabeth McKinney and settled in Grainger Co, TN.
ALVIN THOMAS
son of George Slater Thomas and Katherine Ingles
Alvin Thomas born about 1824 in Rose Hill, Lee Co, VA and died at Camp
Dick Robinson, KY in the fall of 1862. He married Mary Ann Baldwin who
died about 1890 in Boston, Ky. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Milton
Baldwin and Elizabeth Seals. Elizabeth Seals was the daughter of
Fielding Seals and Jane Bales.
Alvin Thomas settled on Rock Creek in Claiborne Co, TN in 1860. He
bought 640 from Dr. William Rogers, 100 acres on Rock Creek from John
Marlow, Sr, and 80 acres nearby on Rock Creek. He built a substantial
log house on the 100 acre tract, planted an orchard and made clearings
for crops. To escape conscription into the Confederate Army, he escaped
to Camp Dick Robertson in Kentucky and joined 1st TN (Federal) Infantry,
Co. C, Vincent Myers, Capt. He had the measles in Oct. 1862 and
overexerted while training army horses, took a relapse and died.
Shortly thereafter, his home was burned. His widow, Mary Ann Baldwin,
became temporarily mentally ill and the children went to live with
relatives. A son, Henry Thomas, becoming of military age, took his
teenage brother William Henderson Thomas (my father) to Camp Dennison,
Ohio. He procured the latter a job doing chores in the family of Arch
Skinner, where Henderson also attended school. Henry Thomas enlisted in
the Union Army in Ohio. At the close of the Civil War, Henderson Thomas
returned, bought the shares of the other heirs to the 100 acre home
tract, but did not establish title to the other two tracts. In 1871,
Henderson married Sarah Elizabeth Gross, daughter of William and
Drusilla (Cadle) Gross. They moved to Powell's River in 1892. This
farm was in Union County but adjoined the Campbell Co. line.
Alvin Thomas and Mary Ann Baldwins children are as follows:
1. Henry Thomas born Rose Hill, VA. Lived and died in Georgetown, KY.
2. Elizabeth Thomas born Rose Hill, VA. and married about 1869 to Sam
McKinney. She died in Grainger Co, TN
*3. William Henderson Thomas, Sr. born 9-16-1848 in Rose Hill, VA and
died 6-16-1924. Married Sarah Elizabeth Gross on 1-12-1871.
4. Ellen born Rose Hill, VA. married a Settles
5. Harvey Clinton Thomas born 10-9-1854 in Rose Hill, VA married
Elizabeth Gill and lived in Rockcastle, KY
6. Jane Thomas married 1. Alex Holt, and 2. John Henson. Lived
Pleasant View, KY
7. Margaret Thomas married John Mink and died in Boston, KY.
HENRY THOMAS
son of George Slater Thomas and Katherine Ingles
Henry Thomas was a private in Co. C, 1st TN Infantry from August 1862 to
Oct 1865. He was born 2-24-1827 and died May 2, 1871. He married Sydney
Elizabeth McKinney who was born 7-7-1829 and died 6-24-1897. They are
both buried in the Thomas Cemetery in Grainger Co. Their children are
as follows:
1. Eliza V. Thomas born 12-28-1846 and died 7-4-1910. Married to Levi
Hammack
2. Isaac Thomas born about 1849
3. George Thomas born about 1857
4. James Albert Thomas born 1-16-1854 and died 8-29-1926.

WILLIAM HENDERSON THOMAS, SR.
son of Alvin Thomas and Mary Baldwin
William Henderson Thomas, Sr. was born 9-16-1848 in Rose Hill, Lee Co,
VA and died 6-16-1924 and is buried in Lays Cemetery in Powell's River,
Union Co, TN. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gross on 1-12-1871 in
Clairfield, Claiborne Co, TN. She was born 9-5-1849 in Claiborne Co.
and died 12-15-1927 in Union Co. She is buried at Brantley's Cemetery
in Union Co. She was the daughter of William Gross and Drusilla Cadle.
Their children are as follows: They were all born in Clairfield,
Claiborne Co except Louisa who was born in Union Co.
1. Green Palmer Thomas born 5-26-1872 and died 1-5-1935. He was
married first to Florence Williamson and then to Josie Cassell.
2. Ollie Josephine Thomas born 9-6-1873 and died in 1949. She was
married first to John Bostick and then to Isaac Winfield Smith.
3. China Jane Thomas born 12-27-1875 and died 8-1949. She was married
to Charles Henry Settles.
4. Archibald Clinton Thomas born 2-22-1878 and died 9-27-1908. Never
married.
5. James A. Thomas born 6-11-1880 and died 4-25-1881.
*6. William Henderson Thomas, Jr. born 4-14-1882 (He died 1969--typist)
married first Maude Hill and then Lucy Snodderly Hill on 11-23-1928.
7. Laura A. Thomas born 6-3-1885 and died 4-21-1891
8. Nancy B. Thomas born 6-11-1888 and married Robert Davis.
9. Louisa Thomas born 8-27-1892 in Union County and died 1-13-1899.
WILLIAM JACKSON THOMAS
son of Henry Thomas and Sydney Elizabeth McKinney
William Jackson Thomas was born 1-16-1859 in Virginia. He was in Union
Co. in the 1880 and the 1900 census. He died 10-25-1928 and is buried
in the Boruff Cemetery in Union Co., TN. He married Sarah Manilla McBee
born 3-8-1861 and died 6-26-1915. She is buried in the same place.
Their children are:
1. Isaac Alonzo Thomas born 12-8-1879 and died 3-22-1966. Married to
Lizzie Davis.
2. Bessie Thomas born 9-20-1881 and died 7-5-1908. Married to Fate
Mincey

Henry P. Thomas was born 11-18-1884 and died 8-3-1936. He married Annie
Yadon on 1-11-1904. She was born 10-13-1880 and died 7-2-1958. Both
are buried in Haun Cemetery in Union Co, TN.
Their children are:
1. Agra (?) Thomas born 10-27-1904 and died 1-30-1906
2. Vada B. Thomas born 7-8-1906 and married Joe Bowers on 10-19-1924.

Will Henderson Thomas, Jr. born 4-14-1882 in Clairfield, Claiborne Co,
TN.
(He died in 1969) Married first to Maude Hill daughter of Ferrin Hill.
She was born 5-21-1885 and died 6-23-1928. (WHT and Maude had 4
children: Ruth, Robert Bruce, Eula and William Rice. )
