Rules

First and foremost our rules may basically be summed up in two words...BE NICE. To further illuminate what these two words mean here are some guidelines.

So what's really changed?
Nothing. In the past year we have had several people, (most left on their own) that the list manager felt should have been kicked off the list. The list manager did not do this because there were no clear cut rules. We make these now to fix this issue. In the year 2000, the list manager will not be as tolerant of the three or four people who cause problems. Like we said, most left, but if anything arises the list manager will now feel justified in any action they take.

May these rules be amended?
Oh, most certainly they may be. Most likely they will be in the next few weeks. Although the list manager will try to make changes available through the list, we reserve the right to change them at any time without notice. We intend to even allow list members some ability to suggest new rules. If you want to e-mail me suggestions about new rules, they will be considered. Any suggestion will be private and we will not divulge who suggested it.
Send suggestions to rules@maynardville.com.

The Basic Rule
Be Nice is pretty self explainatory. But further, if you don't like the list unsubscribe. We are now three years old, and have been operating the same for all three years. We will continue to operate the same. If you don't like our list have the courtesy to unsubscribe do not blast us. Any open attack on the list will be considered a request to unsubscribe and be granted by the listmanager.

Who makes up the list.
This list is made up of many members. Generally we are interested in the roots of, but not limited to our families. We consider ourselves family historians. We are not representing ourselves as professional genealogists.

What can you expect from the list?
Anything history related. If you are looking for a list that is strictly genealogy, this isn't it. We focus mainly on genealogy and family history, but we may discuss Moon Pies and RC Cola along the way. We are not above sharing a recipe, a humorous story from our families past, sending birthday wishes etc. From time to time we may throw out such topics as "do you remember...?" We may discuss general stores, games our grandfathers used to play, etc. So if you are looking for a mail list that is strictly genealogy then this isn't it. We feel that genealogy isn't just a collection of names and dates. Our form of genealogy takes into account the lives of our ancestors, whether it be games they played or whether or not they drank RC with peanuts poured in. More than once people have discovered common roots in these discussions.

In the future you may see such things as a monthly trivia question, a monthly genealogy newsletter and so on. By subscribing to this list you agree to accept these.

Can you expect your e-mail box to be filled up by this list?
Probably not, we get really busy from time to time but usually it's pretty tame. If you do feel you are getting too many, consider using digest mode. Digest mode allows several e-mails to be combined into one and indexed. That way you will get one e-mail with several messages, therefore not filling up your box.

What is not expected?
Rudeness!
We will not tolerate any rudeness whatsoever. We will not tolerate rudeness that is thinly disguised. The list manager is the total judge of what is rude and what is not. If the list manager deems someone to be a problem subscriber, the list manager will banish them from the list. The list manager will not give warning, nor do we feel the need to give a reason to this person or anyone else on the list. It will not be a topic for discussion. We are mostly all adults and we all know what I am talking about.

If more than three people complain about a person, and can provide proof, this person may be considered for banning. This isn't to say the person will be banned but the person will be monitored.

Typing in CAPITOL letters may get you a letter from the list manager, most likely from others. This is considered rude. It's considered yelling.

Can I be banned for typing in capitol letters?
Not for just messing up and typing in capitols. We all have bad habits and sometimes they are hard to break. The only time this may be used in consideration of banning would be the following example:

You write, "I am the FINAL authority in my family's history, and you are WRONG!"

This sentence displays a use of capitols that the list manager would consider to be a reason for considering banning. This is truly yelling and will not be tolerated.

Can I tell people they are wrong?
Of course you may. Just consider their feelings in what you say. Don't say "you're wrong." Just say something like, "my notes say the Suzy was married to Bill, here is my proof." To just say "you're wrong" is in very poor taste, and reflects poorly on your character.

Sharing information.
When you send someone information over the list expect it to be used. It is reasonable to ask that if someone passes the information along, they include your name as the source. It is totally unreasonable to say here is my information, but I don't want you to share it with anyone. Delete any living people from your information before you send it. Send only that which you are freely willing to share.

Sharing the URL for your homepage is welcome and most certainly encouraged. Sharing the URL of your commercial page is not allowed. People sending commercial URL's will be first warned and second banned. This does not apply to sending the url of a commercial site that may be used online. Or telling people why you prefer one product over another. Neither does it include suggesting a site that sells genealogy material or resources. This is just simply saying "look at my computer sales page."

How else may I be banned?
There are numerous ways, and some we haven't thought of yet. Remember, in the three years we have been doing this nobody has been banned.

If you openly complain to the list about anything received from the list you may be banned. Complaints must be sent to the list manager privately. For example:

"I did not join this list to listen to you people talk about an old general store!"

In that example we will consider this your request to be removed and grant it.

"I did not join this list to get advertisements!"

In the future Rootsweb may well decide to sell advertising on their mail lists. This doesn't mean you'll be spammed, it just means at the bottom of every e-mail, there may include a line that says Eat At Joe's. Currently, Rootsweb is the only mail list that doesn't do this. If we owned Rootsweb you better believe we would.

Now, we're not saying you can't say these things, just say them to us privately, not to the list. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated on the list. E-mail us privately and it will be discussed.

Profanity is not tolerated at all period, nada!

Oh my, I screwed up and sent something through the list that was supposed to be private!

Will you be banned? Most likely not, unless of course it's porn or something really bad. Lets say for example you mess up and while trying to send Bob the following e-mail you accidentally send it to the list:

"I think Chip is an egotistical megalomaniac!"

First off, most people will agree with you but that's beside the point. Apologize to the list, and explain what happened. Apologize to the individual in a private e-mail, while forwarding a copy of your apology to the list manager. That's all that is required. Of course if this is habitual we may have to look at it more closely. But shoot we all make mistakes. Most likely all we'll do is make fun of you privately. An apology is just that an apology. It's up to us to forgive people and be a big person.

What other actions may I take?
We may see something that we feel is in bad taste. We may at our discretion e-mail the offending party privately and ask them what they meant. We will never discuss these issues through the list. Do not ask us to ban someone! Do not ask us to openly chew someone out. Banning is the list manager's discretion only. Further, any corrective action the list manager takes will be done privately.

If someone offends someone through the list, an apology through the list is called for. If someone offends someone privately then apologize privately.

But, as listmanager I reserve the right to take any action I see fit.

Your continued use of the mail list TNUNION or your subscribing to TNUNION constitute your acceptance of these rules.
