Lewis County was established 23 December 1843, from parts of Hickman, Lawerence, Maury and Wayne it is still intact. This county was named in honor of Meriwether Lewis, who in 1809 departed this life at Grinder Taylor's , about eight miles from Hohenwald , the county seat of Lewis County. The Dobbins and Grinder's families were the heads of a Swiss Colony , came to what is Lewis Co., about 1807, Hohenwald was a Swiss name and was made the county seat after Newburg .
