The following should be taken as a very rough draft of information compiled by Jane W. Waller (JWW) and put into a genealogy program by her son George Waller (GW). Much of this information was sent by JWW to GW on a floppy disk dated 6 May 1989. Any dates in the 1990's refer to the date of entry into the genealogy program. I will be cleaning up the data as time permits so that this file will be of more use. Meanwhile... enjoy! He and Clarissa Jones Statement 7 Jan 1861, Clarissa jeffreys age 51: John Jones buried Christmas Eve 29 years ago "at a grave yard in the land of Mr Griffith Cunningham" on 7Jan1861. JOHN JONES by Jane Warren Waller Jones is a preponderantly Welsh surname, it is the Welsh way of saying Johnson. This oft quoted rhym by Bishop Lichfield written about the year 1540 gives a good idea of Welsh family names: "Take ten," he said, "and call them Rice, Take another ten and call them Price. A hundred more and dub them Hughes. Take fifty others and call them Pughes. Now, Roberts name some hundred score And Williams name a legion more. And call", he moaned in languid tones, "Call all the other thousands JONES." Year roll by as evenly spaced as lines from a typewriter, but as one sentence in a story gives more detail of plot than other sentences, so may one year be more meaningful in a man's life. Such was the year of 1829 for John Jones. On the 22nd day of April 1829, John Jones appeared in open court of Lincoln county, Tennessee, to make application for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. From this two page document much can be learned of the life and nature of this man. On this Spring day in 1829, John Jones gave his age as seventy-seven and stated that he "had become aged and exceedingly feeble, my industry can no longer afford me sufficient support and I am at last compelled though reluctantly to appeal to my country for that subsistence I am not able to procure by my labours." How this must have hurt the man who stated earlier that he had not applied for a pension under the Act of the 18th of March 1818, because "I dislike the idea of calling for assistance from any source: I dislike the name of beggar and was determined never to make application so long as I could possibly support myself by honest exertions." John Jones declaration of service states that he enlisted for a term of two years in March of 1775 in the state of Virginia. He was in Capt. Berry's Company and the 8th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Mulhenburg. He became ill in December of 1776 and could not return to service and when the expiration of his term came he was discharged at White Marsh Camp in the state of Pennsylvania. Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants by Cartmell p.100 There was another Regiment the 8th composed chiefly of Valley men, a majority of whom were of the German stock, that had settled from the Potomac to the Augusta line, and had been conspicuous in the formation of the new counties taken from old Frederick. Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, the historic Gospel preacher at Woodstock had been recognized by the Colonial Governor as a man of war-like spirit. He had fanned its spark of patriot- ism for more than 12 months and no surprise was expressed when the flame suddenly burst forth in the Winter of '76, with their preacher fully uniformed and with commission of Colonel, authorized to enlist men and organize a regiment to serve in the Virginia line...Very little has been preserved of this regiment. John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746-1807) born at Trappe, Pa. Lutheran minister. In 1771 was minister of the church at Wood- stock, Shenandoah county, Virginia. In 1775 he raised a German Regiment. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. Shenandoah was formed in 1772 of Frederick county, then was Dunmore until 1778. p. 448 Capt. Thomas Berry of the Revolutionary War came from Northumberland county, Virginia during the early part of of the 18th century. Augusta county records show Thomas and William Berry vestrymen in 1745. The Berry family inter- married with Bowman, Crawford, Wilson, Walker families. John Jones did not mention his parents or place of birth in his pension application. In the 1880 census two of his children indicated that his place of birth was Delaware. There is a tradition in the Reuben Anderson Jones family that he came to the States from Wales at the age of eight years and was orphaned soon after. Little is known of the years 1776 when John Jones enlisted and 1809 the time of his marriage to Leah Carter. In the affadavit of George W. Jones for the widow's pension of Leah, he states: "Leah was the second wife of John Jones. John Jones was for many years a Justice of the Peace for Lincoln county" and refers to him as John Jones, Esq. William Jackson Smith, the family's raconteur, spun the following romantic tale for his granddaughter, Ora Smith Warren. "Once upon a time when this part of the country was just being settled, your great, great grandfather left the Ole Dominion and adventured through the wilderness to Tennessee. He settled near the Elk River and started the lonely task of preparing land for farming. Often he would think of the girl he had left behind, but he knew life in the wilderness would have been too hard for her to endure. Several months later he set aside his work and went to a log-rolling for new arrivals from Virginia. Much to his surprise he saw across the yard, the girl he had left behind. She had joined the first group leaving for this area and followed him." This tradition was always told as the Smith ancestor, but as the Smiths came from South Carolina to Lincoln county and were married before they arrived, it would seem William Jackson was talking about his wife's family. The situation was perfect for John Jones and Leah Carter. The application for the marriage license for John Jones and Leah Carter was recorded in Bedford county, Tennessee, on January 28, 1809. They were married on the 31st of January by ___ Quishenbury, Esq. The records of Bedford county were destroyed during the Civil War, but a copy of this marriage bond is in the pension files of the National Archives. The marriage bond of January 28, 1809 was signed by John Jones and Robert Tucker. Later in 1809, Bedford county gave land to form Lincoln county, the land of John Jones was a part of this transaction. In 1958 a grandson of John Jones, Mr. John Rees Jones of Mulberry, Tennessee, gave the following information concerning his grandfather. "My father was Edmond Calvin Jones. His father was named John, perhaps his name was John Rees Jones, as I was named for him." NOTE: ANOTHER RESEARCHER, MRS. GEORGE F. PRUETT OF TAILOR, TEXAS, STATES THAT HER GRANDMOTHER, MARGARET EMMA, DAUGHTER OF REUBEN ANDERSON JONES, SAID THAT JOHN JONES' MIDDLE NAME WAS LOUIS. JOHN JONES' SON, JOHN, SIGNED HIS NAME JOHN L. Mr. John Rees Jones continued, "John Jones helped to clear the ground for the first courthouse of Lincoln county. The old axe he used is still in the family." NOTE: FROM HISTORY OF LINCOLN COUNTY. "THE FIRST COURT- HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1811 ON ONE CORNER OF THE SQUARE. IT WAS BUILT OF LOGS AND COST $35." From affadavits with the application for a pension a few facts are shown of the early years in Lincoln county. JACOB WAGGONER AS OF 23 FEBRUARY 1830, KNEW JOHN JONES FOR 20 YEARS AND STATES THAT JOHN JONES WAS A MAGISTRATE FOR 11 YEARS. JACOB MENTIONS HIS BROTHER, JOHN WAGGONER, LIVING IN MISSOURI. ROBERT DICKSON, AS OF 24 FEBRUARY 1830, KNEW JOHN JONES FOR 23 YEARS. GRIFFITH CUNNINGHAM, AGED ABOUT 76 ON 7 JANUARY 1861, CAME TO LINCOLN COUNTY IN 1807 AND LIVED IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA OF JOHN JONES. CHARLES MCKINNEY M.D., AGED 72, LIVED IN FAYETTEVILLE SINCE 1813 AND WAS THE JONES' DOCTOR. Conversation with Mr. John Rees Jones in 1958: He laughingly recalls his father, Edmond Calvin, telling of meeting his brother, John, enroute from Texas and Edmond taking his older brother to task for remarrying. I often visited Aunt Patsy, she was a Stonebraker, in Fayetteville and she left money hidden in the structure of her house, Mr. Jones recalled. NOTE: DURING THE LIFETIME OF THE COMPILER, THE MONEY WAS FOUND AND ALL OF FAYETTEVILLE WAS GREATLY EXCITED. The compiler visited the Cunningham Graveyard. Few of the graves are marked. There is a marker for ALFRED LAY b. 1 March 1866 d. 28 June 1880. Within an iron fence one marker is engraved on three sides: (southside) KATIE H. JONES d. May 1904 agged 44. (east side) MARY E. James, and his young wife, was in Lincoln Co. in 1860, he was 34 (more likely 24, since he was also 34 in 1870) his wife Lea Ann was 16, their first born John was 8 mos and he has his mother-in law living with them. She was Clericy Nancy JEFFRES, age 50 and a child James, age 9, probably Lea's brother. Family was living in Rutherford Co., possibly Murfreesboro, in 1870. In addition to John, they had children Laura, ca 1861; William, ca 1866; Emma, ca 1868; and Charles, ca 1869. Clara (Clericy) is still with them but not James. In 1880 they had moved to Bedford Co. and have, in addition to those already mentioned, Fannie, ca 1871; Sallie Bell, July 1873 (wife's ggrandmother) and James A. Jr., ca 1879. Clara was still alive and age 72. Sallie married Alonzo Phillip MARTIN in Hickman Co., in 1886. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone with additional information about the BYAS or JEFFRES (JEFFRIES) lines. I have some additional info on the other children and their marriages. She October 31,1974. Letter from Ora S. Warren to Jennifer Waller: Dear Jenny- The next remembrance of grandmother Sara was her death in the old home near the Huntsville H'way. I remember only our going there. A lot of grandchildren were in the back yard. Her 3 grown sons came out the back door and there were crying, using their red bandana handkerchiefs. This is all that impressed me enough to remember for I had not seen grown men cry like children. She and Gramp had reared a granddaughter, Nora Beard. She was 14. I was not quite 4 then. Nora's mother, my Aunt Bell, died when her next child was born, a little boy. My impression of Grandmother was that she was tall - regal looking and capable. She adored her first grandson, Robert Pleasant Smith, your paternal great great grandfather. I can show you the spot where the old log house stood when you come again. Love - Mamaw on 4Jan1897. Spring is now a little nearer Summer then will take a stand Then you'll roam and wander thither Up in Rip Van Winkle's land in Feb1956. She and Blake Edwin Waller BLAKE EDWIN WALLER CAME And now another wee, wee Blake Bespeaks his Grandpop's fine namesake. I'll write of him - his praises sing, When I shall see him in the Spring. September 27, 1956: Blake's birth on 27Sep1956. She I HAD A DREAM Celestial white, an aged man, And one a boy with a trump' Another tiny boy in white - Young woman then came forth. All sang of 'Sweetness' evermore. All knelt in reverent awe. The aged man arose from couch And knelt too - the last I saw. But I, watching, turned away so sad. What did it mean for me - A warning, prophecy or what? What - what did I see? January 29, 1957: Written about a dream of July 15, 1953 on 29Jan1957. She and Bruce Albert Waller Letter from Mamaw (Ora S. Warren) to Bruce Waller: "Hi Bruce, HAPPY WELCOME DAY - You really surprised us, you scamp, Hope you'll be a fine big boy when you get home. Love - Mamaw on 22Sep1958. She and William Jackson Smith GRAMP AND THE GRASSHOPPERS When William Jackson Smith was a small schoolboy in a one room schoolhouse in the country, one fine day his muchly admired little girl friends, trim and neat and lovley came to school with shiny new diner pail - the only one of its kind in that school. She placed it proudly on her desk and every eye viewed it with envy. Mischief-loving William could not deep his mind on his lessons, for watching that bright oddity. When his idol went up to recite her lesson he sneaked it out, after snapping his fingers to be be 'excused'. He opened the pail, but the delicious contents did not interest him. Now the difference in this pail and the others he had seen was a second small pail or cup on top of the lid. This cup also had a lid and held dessert - cobbler - molasses and butter etc. This was just too irresistible and William Jackson too full of mischief. He could just picture the commotion in the school room. So he pured out the golden molasses with butter stirred in, all ready for the biscuits inside the lower part of the pail. He busied himself through several class periods catching grasshoppers and imprisoning them into the sticky cup. When it was well filled he put the lid on the cup and sneaked the dinner pail back to its place on the little girl's desk. Such screams from all the students when she opened her dessert cup and out cam a swarm of sweet and sticky grasshoppers flying all over the room - in the girls' long hair and on the professor's coat sleeve. The licks young William received from the teacher's cane were not felt for his penchant for fun was satisfied. Written by Ora S. Warren, ca1965 circa 1965. We were known as Victory Belles. The commanding officer would start the dance by thanking us for being so patriotic in attending the dances. With the ratio of men 4 to 1 can you imagine we needed thanks, too? :-) That is where I met my husband. We celebrated 50 years of marriage last June 30th. Part of the celebration was traveling through VA researching and we spent some time in Amelia county. If your mother was from that area, the query might help, or some of the former Victory Belles might remember your father. As I left home for college June 1942, I did not go to as many of the dances as my friends. Jane in 1942 at Lincoln County, TN. She was Founding Publisher LCTP in 1970. 18.
