| Dr. Wilbert Ellington Brooks, 66, of Lafayette, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at his residence. The Nicaragua native was born Monday, October 10, 1938 a son of the late Roger H. Brooks and Jelina E. Amadias Brooks. He was a well known physician in Lafayette, Tennessee for several years. Prior to moving to Lafayette he was employed by the State of Tennessee at DeBerry Correctional Facility, and was also employed at Meharry Medical College, Nashville Memorial Hospital, and Riverside Hospital, all in Nashville, Tennessee. Following his move to Lafayette, Tennessee, he also was a former member of Lafayette Rotary Club, served for many years as Medical Examiner for Macon County, was on the Board of Directors at Macon County General Hospital, where he also served as chief of staff, was medical director of the hospital's emergency room, medical director for Macon County Ambulance Service, medical director for the Federal Aviation Administration, a director of Knollwood Manor, and medical advisor for ABC Home Health. In addition to his many years of service as a local physician, he was also a member of numerous local, state, and national medical associations and organizations, including the American Medical Association, and was a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as chairperson of the finance and building committees, was a church Elder and member of the church board. He loved working on his farm, flying airplanes, and was an accomplished pianist, trumpet, and guitar player. On November 27, 1966 he was united in marriage to Maritza Jaentschke Brooks. He is survived by his wife, Maritza Brooks, Lafayette, TN; a daughter and son-in-law, Laverne and David Deckert, Atlanta, GA; 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Stennett and Valerie Brooks, Lebanon TN; Major Desmond Craig Brooks, with the United States Marine Corp Reserves stationed in Macedonia; Captain Ray Erol Brooks and his wife, Jessica Knight, with the United States Marine Corp stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii; a foster daughter, Elizabeth Jaentschke, of Nicaragua; 2 brothers, Stennett H. Brooks and his wife, Erma, New York City, New York; Oril M. Brooks, of Nicaragua; a sister, Redella Hodge and her husband, Albert, Orlando, Florida; and 4 grandchildren. Funeral services for Dr. Wilbert E. Brooks were conducted at 12 Noon Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Lafayette Church of Christ with his brother, Pastor Stennett Brooks, President Emeritus of the Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventist as service coordinator assisted by other family and friends, with burial following in Macon County Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Stennett E. Brooks, D. Craig Brooks, Ray E. Brooks, Orville Brooks, Edmond F. Hodge, and Mark Hatfield. Honorary pallbearers were Pastor Stennett E. Brooks, Linvall K. Fleetwood, M.D., Oril Brooks, Reneā Brooks, Harvey Brooks, Roger Brooks, Albert J. Hodge, Olufemi Odunusi, M.D., Stanley Chunn, M.D., Hanna Ilia, M.D., Philip Hunt, M.D., Ramegowda Sudheenora, M.D., Verna Bain, M.D., David Stewart, M.D., and Robert Grummon, M.D. Ushers were Judy Mason, Bonnie Ryherd, Paul Walwyn, Lloyd Briggie, and Terry Mason. William Coons, age 79, of Red Boiling Springs, TN, formerly of the Leonard Community of Clay County, were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Phillip Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Red Boiling Springs with Jimmy Cook officiating. Family and friends served as pallbearers. Interment followed in the Leonard Cemetery. William Coons passed away Monday, Jan. 17 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin. A native of Clay County, TN, he was the son of the late William and Letha Hix Coons. He married Susie Pitcock on December 26, 1946 who preceded him in death on May 9, 1978. He was preceded in death by a sister, Addie Coons; and brothers, Weldon, Doyle and Garland Coons. He was a factory worker and a custodian for Hermitage Springs School. He was a member of Leonard Church of Christ. Survivors include sisters, Edris Jenkins and Louise Whitley, both of Red Boiling Springs; and brother, Joseph Coons of Gallatin. James Echols passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at Macon County General Hospital. A native of Georgia, he was the son of the late Charles and Opal Purcell Echols. He married the former Constance (C.J.) Simmons Harris on Sept. 22, 1999 who survives. He was minister of the Family Forum in Lafayette. Survivors besides his wife include: daughter, Rym (David) Sledge, Nashville; son, Reagan (Mary Ann) Echols, Washington, D.C.; step-daughters, Jennifer (Jonathan) Rifkin, Lafayette, Kathleen (Eric) Wimsatt, Nashville; step-sons, Michael (Amy) Steel, Scott (Melissa) Steel, all of Goodlettsville; sister, Gail (George) Shane, Orlando, FL; and 12 grandchildren. Lillie Bell Mandrell, age 71, of Lafayette, TN, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, TN. The Macon County, TN native was born August 1, 1933, a daughter of the late Edd Meador and Irene Jenkins Meador. She was a retired inspector in garment manufacturing and a member of Oakdale General Baptist Church. On June 12, 1951, she was united in marriage to Roy Mandrell, who preceded her in death on July 8, 2000. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn Mandrell, Lisa and Ricky Dennis, all of Lafayette, TN; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Phillip Roy Mandrell, Danny Lee and Margie Mandrell, all of Lafayette, Michael and Jennifer Mandrell, Westmoreland; a sister, Elsie Jean Mince, Westmoreland; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services for Lillie Bell Mandrell were conducted Friday, January 21, 2004, 10 a.m. at Alexander-Goad Funeral Home with Rev. W.L. Meador and Rev. Raymond Adcock officiating. Burial was in Macon County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Lonnie Douglas, Donnie Miller, Eddie Wilson, Tony Fuqua, Ray Mince and Quinton Mandrell. Debbie Anderson Patrick, 51, of 1287 Washington School Road, Scottsville, KY, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. The Indianapolis, IN native was a homemaker, a former nurse at Allen County War Memorial Hospital and Greenview Regional Hospital, a member of East Willow Street Church of God, a Sunday School teacher for 33 years and director of Women's Christian Outreach. She was a daughter of Paul Leon Anderson of Murray, KY who survives and the late Mary Jean Parker Brooks Johnson. She is survived by her husband, pastor Danny Patrick, Scottsville, KY; two sons, Keith and wife Angela Patrick and Matthew Patrick, all of Scottsville, KY; two daughters, Jennifer and husband Jimmy Grace, Heather and husband Chad Qualls, all of Scottsville; her father and step-mother, Paul and wife Carol Anderson, Murray, KY; one brother, Jeff Anderson, Scottsville; one sister, Paula Frye, Scottsville; one step-brother, Buddy Spivey, Murray, KY; two step-sisters, Brenda Gordon and Gail Sauer, both of Indianapolis, IN; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Leon Anderson. Funeral services for Debbie Anderson Patrick were held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at East Willow Street Church of God with Bro. Kevin Hinton and Bro. Keith Patrick officiating and burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery.
Arnold Wilson "Shorty" Polston, age 87, of 748 East Maple Street, Scottsville, KY, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at the Cal Turner Extended Care Facility. The Macon County, TN native was a former of Lafayette Manufacturing and Kentucky Flooring, a retired employee of Dollar General and a member of Meadorville Missionary Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Walter Bates Polston and Sweetie Hesson Polston and husband of the late Tishia Vinson Polston. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Connie Polston, Scottsville, KY; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, B.D. Polston and Forrest O. Polston; and two step-daughters, Bernice Davis and Jernice Sexton. Funeral services for Arnold Wilson "Shorty" Polston were held Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at Goad Funeral Home with burial in Macon County Memorial Gardens.
Rita McCarter Dennis Strong, age 44, of Lafayette, TN were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. from the chapel of Phillip Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Red Boiling Sprnigs with Ronald Strong officiating. Her family and friends served as pallbearers. Interment followed in Whitley Cemetery. Rita Strong passed away Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2005 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. A native of Macon County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Pleas and Ivern Williams McCarter. On Dec. 11, 1982, she was married to Clark Strong, who survives. She was a factory worker and member of Willette Church of Christ. Survivors besides her husband include sons, Jason Dennis, Knoxville, Jamie Dennis, Lafayette; sisters, Faye (Roger) Hackett, Judith (Ronnie) Lynch, all of Carthage, Sherry (Joe) Grimsley, Glasgow, KY; two grandsons. Huston Young Weems, Sr., age 67, of Mt. Vernon Church Road, Bethpage, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 21, 1 p.m. at Anderson & Woodard Funeral Home in Westmoreland. Interment was in Rocky Mound Cemetery. He was the son of the late Clifford Eugene Weems and Grace Elizabeth Johns. He was married to Reva Charise Edens Weems, who survives. He was retired from Firestone after 32 years of service. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Roy Dale Weems, Old Hickory, TN, Kurt Levoy Weems, White House, TN, Huston Young Weems, Jr. of Hawaii; one daughter, Terry Yolanda Riddle of Madison; three brothers, Willie Weems, Portland, Lloyd Wayne Weems and Truman Weems, both of Hendersonville; four sisters, Betty Hawkins, Westmoreland, Juanita Blackwell, Hartsville, Ann Rosson, West Virginia, Carol Patterson, Indianapolis, IN; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Elaine Brooks Williams, age 75, of the Webbtown Community of Macon County, were conducted Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Phillip Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Lafayette with Elder Joe Tom Stinson officiating. Pallbearers were Martin Wooten, Tony Brooks, Tommy Brooks, Jeff Gregory, Steve Williams, Anthony Williams, J.R. Sutton, and Keith Manion. Interment followed in Anderson & Son Memorial Park. Elaine Williams passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005 at Macon County General Hospital. A native of Allen County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Delia Driver Brooks. She married Dennis Williams on July 1, 1959 who survives. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Holleman. She was retired from Stitches, Inc. in Red Boiling Springs. Survivors besides her husband of 45 years include: daughter, Teresa (Johnny) Roark; son, Kenny (Wendy) Williams, all of Lafayette; sister, Shirley (Lewis) Manion, Scottsville, KY; brothers, Henry (Sue) Brooks, Lafayette, Enoch (Sylvia) Brooks, Scottsville, Blaine Brooks, Midway Community; and three grandsons.
