On October 2 1863 William Preston McNabb and Henry Clay McNabb, the 18-year-old identical twin (born December 8 1845) sons of Taylor and Margaret McNabb, left their farm and went to Loudon County to join the Union Army.
Captain Robert Cochran was a friend of their family and was captain of the 9th Tennessee Calvary Company E. It was to this company they went to enlist.
They participated in battles at Blue Springs, Greeneville, Cumberland Gap, Russellville and Morristown.
In October 1863, and for several months, reports stated the Calvary had neither arms nor horses.
In September 1864 William was severely wounded. He never recovered and died on May 23 1865. His brother survived and married Sina Minerva Cline on December 20 1869.
Clay and Sina had nine children. Clay lived to see his children grown and died at the age of 63 on January 22 1908.
On May 25 1991 a Memorial Day service was held at Cochran Cemetery in Englewood in memory of the McNabb twins and all the soldiers buried there from the Revolutionary War to that time.
The speaker was Historian Stephen Addison and a group of Civil War re-enactors came from Calhoun GA to portray a battle from the Civil War era.
