CHAPTER X, JAMES SHELTON(l)

James Shelton(l), Gent, son of Sir Ralph Shelton, 26th Lord of Shelton in England, came to America In June, l6lO with his relative, Lord Delaware, and was a resident of Jamestown, Virginia in 1620. He was a member of the first courts of America in 1619 and 1624. He moved to Bermuda about 1630 after trade was opened. He died in Barbados in 1668. This island of some l66 square miles in the West Indies off the coast of Venezuela is about 200 miles northeast of Trinidad. The Encyclopedia Americana notes that "Some   of the white inhabitants are some of the best English stock, being descendants of early settlers who were closely allied by the bond of blood or ties of friendship with the colonists of Virginia." His father, Sir Ralph Shelton, was a member of the London Company for settlement in Virginia. The wife of James Shelton(l) was named Anne, and he had a brother Thomas, James and Anne Shelton had the following children:

James Shelton, eldest son of James(l) and Anne, born in England about 1600, lived in Warwickshire, England. After the death of his father, James(1), in 1668, this James and first wife, Eleanor West (possibly the daughter of Thomas West, who was Lord Delaware, Colonial Governor of Virginia), and their son Edward Shelton (Chilton) went to Bermuda as heir to his father's estate. Edward Shelton married in England. He was Attorney General of the territory including Bermuda, North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Jersey. He was commissioned July 31, 1696 as Edward Chilton.

Stephen Shelton, son of James(1) and Anne Shelton, was born in England in 1602. Shown in some records as Stephen Charlton, he had the rank of Ship’s Captain. He married Anne West. He owned the ship, Captain John Stone, in 1634. He was one of the earliest Justices of Accomac, in l645 is said to have owned one of the only two horses on the East Coast. On record in Northampton as Captain Steven Charlton. Stephen and Anne West Shelton had daughter Bridget Shelton who wed a Captain Foxcraft, they having had no children. Stephen and Anne Shelton had also Eliz Shelton, who at age 12 wed J. Gutting, having no children. Captain Stephen Shelton’s will men­tions Bridget and Eliz, wife Anne, nephew Robert and a widow woman named Bridget Severn. Captain Stephen Shelton died in January, l654.

John Shelton, son of James(1) and Anne Shelton, born in England about 1603, was living in Shadwell, England in l639. He was a ship­owner and merchant. He came to South Carolina in 1683. He had descendant Richard Shelton who was granted 12,000 acres in South

Carolina in 1734, known as Sheldon Plantation. Sheldon Church still exists on the plantation site. Richard wed Frances Lake in Bermuda on May 27, l683, who died December 6, 1692. Richard died on a sub­sequent visit to Bermuda. Richard and Frances Lake Shelton had the following children: Richard, Elizabeth, Sarah and Robert Shelton:

Richard Shelton, son of Richard and Frances Lake Shelton, born about l684, died in Bermuda on March 23, 1693.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Richard and Frances Lake Shelton, born l684, died same year.

Sarah Shelton. daughter of Richard and Frances Lake Shelton, born April 18, 1686, died November 17, 1700.

Robert Shelton. son of Richard and Frances Lake Shelton, was born December 7, 1689, was baptized May 25, 1693. He wed Mary Lyte on August 12, 1712. He was a ship's captain. He and Mary had at least 6 children, two of whom died in infancy. The four survivors were Richard, Mary, Robert and Sarah Shelton:

Richard Shelton, son of Robert and Mary Lyte Shelton, baptized September 23, 17l6, wed Mrs. Elizabeth Woodward. They had a  daughter Sarah. Elizabeth died February 10, 1747, Richard in July, 1744.

Sarah Shelton, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Woodward Shelton, was born January 8, 1745.

Mary Shelton, daughter of Robert and Mary Lyte Shelton, was born December 13, 1718.

Robert Shelton, son of Robert and Mary Lyte Shelton, was born about 1720, baptized November 5, 1720, died May 17, 1723.

  Sarah Shelton, daughter of Robert and Mary Lyte Shelton, was born April 6, 1723, was baptized one week later.

John Shelton, son of James(1) and Anne Shelton, was born in Eng­land in 1603, died in Bermuda August 15, 1691.

William Shelton. son of James(l) and Anne Shelton, was born in England about 1605, died at sea in 1640. He wrote a will while aboard his ship, The William, on November 20, 1639 while in the East Indies. The will, filed in London, named his mother Anne, brother John of Shadwell as Executor, and sister Joane Hall.

Richard Shelton, son of James(1) and Anne Shelton, was born in England about 1606. He had land grants in Isle of Wight County in Virginia in 1638. He wed Susannah ____. In his will, which was proved in 1704, he listed Susannah and 6 children: John, James, William, Anne, Mary and Sarah. He died in 1701.

John Shelton, son of Richard and Susannah ____ Shelton, was born about 1630. Was a practicing attorney in 1696. He had son William.

William Shelton, son of Richard's son John, was born about 1660, died in 1730.

Thomas Shelton, son of James(1) and Anne Shelton, was born in Eng­land about l608. He moved first to Bermuda. Then in 1628 he moved to Virginia on the Hopewell, He wed Hannah Wood and settled in Norfolk County. He died in l684 on Bohemia River in Cecil County, Maryland. Thomas' will, dated October 24, 1683, listed 7 children: James, John, Stephen (variously called Shelton, Carlton, Chilton), George and Thomas Shelton,

James Shelton, son of Thomas and Hannah Wood Shelton, was born about 1635 in Norfolk County, was County Court Clerk of York County, Virginia 17l4-17l6. He reportedly had 6 sons: Daniel, Reuben, Richard, Peter, William and John:

Daniel Shelton, son of Thomas* son James, was born in York County in 1668. (John Kendrick Shelton in his paper shows Daniel born in Yorkshire, England, as do other genealogists.) He died in Connecticut in 1728. He was reported to have been at one time shipwrecked off Connecticut and cut off from Virginia by hostile Indians. He is said to have made voyages to Virginia, South America, Massachusetts and back to Conn­ecticut. His ship was named Sarah. He acquired many acres of land in Connecticut, was an influential citizen. He wed Eliz­abeth Wells, born 1670, daughter of Samuel Wells and grand­daughter of Governor Thomas Wells of Connecticut, on April 4, 1692. They resided in Stratford. When his brother Reuben's will was probated it was found to have named Daniel as bene­ficiary, Reuben having no children, but it was assumed that Daniel had died in the shipwreck. Daniel died in 1728, but his estate was not divided until Elizabeth's death in 1747. They had 9 children: Elizabeth, Sarah, Joseph, Daniel Jr., Thaddeus, Samuel, James, John and Josiah:

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shelton, born January 2, 1693, wed Nicholas Masters. She died July 12, 1758.

Sarah Shelton, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shelton, was born March 26, l694. She wed James Wakelee,

William Shelton, son of Joseph and Mary Hollister Shel­ton, was born July 26, 1739. He wed Susannah Strong, born February 1, 1743, daughter of Thomas and Susannah Thompson Strong of Brookhaven, Long Island. William died January 7, 1812, Susannah April 12, l8l6. They had 8 children: Joseph, William Jr., Selah, Nancy, Elizabeth, Philo, Thomas Strong, and George.

Joseph Shelton, eldest son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, was born August 27, 1765. He wed Charity Lewis, born March 7, 1769, daughter of Stephen and Jerusha Curtiss Lewis. They lived in the house at Long Hill that had belonged to his grandfather, Joseph, born 1696. Joseph and Charity had 8 children: Delia, Henry, Stephen Lewis, Nancy, Joseph Augustus, Philo Strong, Elizabeth and Edward Nelson:

Henry Shelton, son of Joseph and Charity Lewis Shelton, born April 13, 1795, wed Helen King of New York.

Nancy Bateman Shelton, daughter of Joseph and Charity Lewis Shelton, was born June 3, 1800. She wed the Honorable Nehemiah Curtiss Sanford.

Joseph Augustus Shelton, son of Joseph and Charity Lewis Shelton, born March 19, 1803, died unwed.

Philo Strong Shelton, son of Joseph and Charity Lewis Shelton, born December 15, 1805, married Georgianna A. Homer.

Edward Nelson Shelton, son of Joseph and Charity Lewis Shelton, was born in Huntington, Connecti­cut on September 4, 1812. He wed Mary Jane DeFor­est, daughter of Linson and Jane Hewley DeForest, of New York on July l4, l84O. They moved to Bir­mingham, Connecticut where Edward became an in­fluential citizen. They had three daughters:

Ada Stewart Shelton, daughter of Edward Nelson and Mary Jane DeForest Shelton, born about 1855, lived at the old homestead, Greystone, at Darby, Connecticut. Was active in D. A. R.

William Shelton, Jr., son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, was born March 3, 1767. He wed Catv Tomlinson, had daughter Catherine who wed (page 347).

Selah Shelton, son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, was born January 4, 1770, wed Phoebe French.

Nancy Shelton, daughter of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, born April 20, 1773, wed Calvin Bateman.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, born May 25, 1776, wed John White.

Philo Shelton, son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, born 1778, died unwed in 1804.

Thomas Strong Shelton, son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, was born May 5, 1782. He married Mary Ann Beardsly.

George Shelton, son of William and Susannah Strong Shelton, born November 6, 1785, wed Bessie Wooster.

Esther Shelton, daughter of Joseph and Mary Hollister Shelton, was born In 1746. She wed George Thompson.

Daniel Shelton, Jr., son of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shelton, was born July 1, 1700. He wed Mary Hubbell. They had 10 children: Nathan, Abijah, Ebenezer, Abigail, John, Sarah, Mehitable, Phoebe, Mary and Anna. Daniel Jr. died in 1773.

Benjamin French Shelton, son of Daniel and Mary French Shelton, was born in March, 1789. He wed Syl­via Perry, born November 20, 1794, on May 3, 1812. They had son Theodore Bottsfield Shelton:

Theodore Bottsfield Shelton, son of Benjamin French and Sylvia Perry Shelton, was born Novem­ber 19, 1813, died in 1894, and is buried in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Theodore married Harriet Emmons, born l8l5, on June 19, 1834, who died in 1898. They had 5 children: Harriet, who wed N. Denton Smith and had 6 daughters; Frances, who wed George DeForest Lord and died without issue; Charles C.; Madeline, who wed Dr. Francis Markoe; and William Henry Shelton, born September 30, 1843 in New York City, who wed Charlotte Kirkland on June 5, 1866. William Henry and Charlotte Kirk-land Shelton had 4 daughters: Louise K., Harriet; Helen and Florence. Florence, born June 6, 1871, wed Mahlon Pitney, born l858, who died in 1924,

on November 14, 1891, Mahlon having become Asso­ciate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court.

Samuel Shelton, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shelton,

was born in Stratford, Connecticut on February 10, 1705.

He wed Abigail Nichols on October 2, 1735. They resided

at Huntington where he died on November 12, 1772_. Abigail,

the daughter of Joseph and Mary Nichols, died on February

2, 1794 at age 80. Samuel and Abigail had 13 children:

Daniel Shelton, son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shel­ton, was born April 26, 1737. He wed his first cousin, Mehitable Shelton, daughter of Daniel Jr. and Mary Hubbell Shelton.

Samuel Shelton, Jr., son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shelton, was born in Connecticut on August 24, 1738. He wed Tabitha Booth, born September 22, 1747, in about 1766, who died October 20, 1813. They had 10 children:

Zachariah Shelton, son of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born June 6, 1767.

Chloe Shelton, daughter of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born December 6, 1768.

Anna Shelton, daughter of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born December 18, 1769.

Eli Shelton, son of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born August 3, 1771. He wed Hepsy Nichols on March 22, 1798 of Booth Hill. They had 5 children: Minerva, Jennette, Ambrose, John C. and Phoebe M.

Minerva Shelton, daughter of Eli and Hepsy Nich­ols Shelton, was born December 4, 1798. She wed Arnold Hurd of Monroe on May 7, 1818, son of Samuel Leavenworth and Elizabeth Clark Hurd, born July 17, 1796, who died September 19, 1870. Minerva died November 7, 1856. They had 4 child­ren: Samuel Shelton Hurd, born August 21, 1820, who wed Amelia Smith and had Mary Elizabeth Hurd who wed John Huntington Brewster; Frederick N. Hurd, born January 28, 1823; Edwin C. Hurd, born July 4, 1825; and Caroline Hurd, born December 4, 1827.

   Jennette Shelton, daughter of Eli and Hepsy Nich­ols Shelton, was born September 24, 1800. She wed David Curtiss of Newtown November 27, 1823, moved to Painted Post, New York.

Shelton, was born May 27, 1802. He wed Helen M. Curtiss, daughter of Silas and Avis Newton Shel ton Curtiss, on December 23, l824, Avis being the daughter of "Little Daniel".

John C. Shelton, son of Eli and Hepsy Nichols Shelton, was born September 19, 1804. He wed first Mary Gregory on December 23, l824; 2nd Sally Mallett of Trumbull. He died January, l87l.

Phoebe M. Shelton, daughter of Eli and Hepsy Nichols Shelton, was born May 1, 1813. She wed Ephriam Curtiss September 22, 1824, resided in Bridgeport.

Abby Shelton, daughter of Samuel, Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born July 17, 1773.

Silas Shelton, son of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born December 24, 1774.

Tabitha Shelton, daughter of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born April 7, 1778.

Samuel Shelton, son of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born March 1, 1780.

Sally Shelton, daughter of Samuel Jr. and Tabitha Booth Shelton, was born December 19, 1782.

David Shelton, son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shel­ton, was born June l6, 174l. He wed Elizabeth Masters. (One record shows his wife to be Miss Waters). They are reported to have had 6 children: Ransom, Chloe, Joseph, Polly, Stephen and Selden.

Ransom Shelton, son of David and Elizabeth Masters Shelton, was born about 1760.

Chloe Shelton, daughter of David and Elizabeth Mas­ters Shelton, was born about 1762.

Joseph Shelton, son of David and Elizabeth Masters Shelton, was born about 1764.

Polly Shelton, daughter of David and Elizabeth Mas­ters Shelton, was born about 1766.

Sarah Shelton, daughter of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shelton, born July 18, 1748, wed Samuel Booth.

Ann Shelton, daughter of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shelton, was born February 7, 1750. She wed Josiah Tomlinson.

Josiah Shelton, son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shelton, was born December 30, 1751. He is said to have served in the Revolutionary War. He died in the smallpox epidemic March 19, 1777, is buried at Southford near Southbury.

Philo Shelton, son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shel­ton, was born March 5, 1754. He wed Lucy Nichols, was a graduate of Yale, was an Episcopal minister.

Agur Shelton, son of Samuel and Abigail Nichols Shel­ton, was born August 11, 1758. He wed Abigail Newton in 1779. A Tory, he died June 24, 1845. Abigail also died that year. Agur and Abigail had 6 children: Polly Emelia, Charles, Avis, Abigail, Christopher Newton, and David.

Polly Emelia Shelton, dau. of Agur and Abigail New­ton Shelton, was born September 8, 1780. She wed Philo Wakelee, the son of James Shelton Wakelee, who in turn was likely the son of Sara Shelton and James Wakelee, in August 1813. They had two children; Abi­gail and James Wakelee.

Abigail Wakelee, daughter of Philo and Polly Eme-lia Shelton, was born in l8l5. She wed William Nettleton.

James Shelton Wakelee, son of Philo and Polly Emelia Shelton Wakelee, was born about 1817. He wed Abby Gilbert.

Shelton, was born July l6, 1782. He wed Lucinda   Cornwall, daughter of Dr. Thomas Tryon Cornwall, soldier in War of 1812, and his wife Lucinda Foote Cornwall. Charles and Lucinda had 3 children: Charles Beers, Grace, and William Shelton.

Charles Beers Shelton, son of Charles and Lucin­da Cornwall Shelton, was born about 1805. He wed Caroline M. Cassilear of New York.

Grace Shelton, daughter of Charles and Lucinda Corn­wall Shelton, was born, about 1807. She wed Edward H. Buddington of Milford, Connecticut.

William Shelton, son of Charles and Lucinda Corn­wall Shelton, was born about 1809. He wed Annie Lou Cassilear of New York.

Avis Shelton, daughter of Agur and Abigail Newton Shelton, was born in Huntington, Connecticut on Oct­ober 19, 1786. She wed Isaac Judson of New York on April 7, 1805. Avis died December 3, 1859. A kins­man, David Newton Judson, possibly a son, married Sarah Folsom Hale of Georgia.

Christopher Shelton, son of Agur and Abigail Newton Shelton, was born April l6, 1795. He wed Catherine Shelton, daughter of Dr. William Shelton, Jr. and his wife Katy Tomlinson Shelton, born 1798, who died 1855. Christopher died on November 21, 1872. They had 3 children: Caroline, William and Charles.

Caroline Shelton, daughter of Christopher and Catherine Shelton Shelton, was born about 1820.

William Shelton, son of Christopher and Catherine Shelton Shelton, was born about 1822.

Charles Shelton, son of Christopher and Catherine Shelton Shelton was born about l824.

David Shelton, son of Agur and Abigail Newton Shel­ton, was born September 17, 1799. He wed Jane Perry in 1830, had Mary Jane:

Mary Jane Shelton, daughter of David and Jane Perry Shelton, was born in 1832.

James Shelton, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shelton, was born in 1710. He wed Anna Wheeler. They had 6 child­ren: Hanna, Elisha, Anna, Elizabeth and 2 others, both of whom died young. They lived at Huntington.

Josiah Shelton, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Wells Shel­ton, was born in Connecticut in 1714. He wed Eunice Nichols. They had 2 daughters, Charity and Eunice Shelton, Josiah died April 2, 1782. In the census of 1790 there was a Josiah Shelton in Suffield County heading a family of 7, 1 male over l6, 3 under l6 and 3 females. This was likely a descendant of Josiah above, although records at hand show that he had 2 daughters only. He wed Eunice in Ripton-Unity, Connecticut on May 17, 1736. John Kendrick Shelton in his paper does not list Josiah here, has William as 9th child. He was the youngest of the children of

Charity Shelton, daughter of Josiah and Eunice Nichols Shelton, was born about 1737.

Eunice Shelton, daughter of Josiah and Eunice Nichols Shelton, was born about 1739.

Reuben Shelton, son of Thomas' son James, was born in York Coun­ty in about 1670. He wed Elizabeth ____ about 1690. He died in Virginia without progeny. When his will was probated it was found that Daniel was named as beneficiary. But Daniel, having been shipwrecked off Connecticut, was presumed dead, so that his estate was otherwise disposed of, Elizabeth presumably hav­ing also died.

Richard Shelton, son of Thomas' son James, was born in York County in about 1672. A Richard Shelton, who may have been this son of James of Hanover and York Counties, although this is pure­ly conjectural, was a resident in Fauquier County, Virginia and left there a daughter named Jane, as well as other children whose names are not at hand.

William Shelton, son of Thomas' son James, was born in York County in about 1674. One William Shelton was on jury in York County in 1706. He was Executor with Lawrence Smith of the estate of John Moss in that county in 17l6.

Peter Shelton, son of Thomas' son James, was born in York County in about 1676.

John Shelton, son of Thomas' son James, was born about l649,
apparently the eldest of James' children. He died in 1706. His
will made in Westmoreland County, Virginia, November 15, 1706,
was filed in Westmoreland County and probated April 29, 1708.
He wed about l664 to Jane ___, and he was survived by her and

6 children. He owned the Shelton home in Westmoreland County called Currioman, bought Carotman in Lancaster County on Nov­ember 11, 1762 from William Clapham. John Shelton was a vestry­man in St. Paul's Church in 1705. He built Rural Plains in Han­over County near the present site of Studley, Virginia in 1670. This writer has had the pleasure of visiting Rural Plains twice, the summer of 1958 with my family, and in May, 1984, with Mrs. Shelton. On the first visit we met Miss Mary Shelton, daughter of the owner. It is the oldest home in America continuously occupied by the male line of the same family. Photos taken there grace the family album in this writer's household. The owner, William Robert Shelton, died September 8, 1958, and of such was the esteem in which he was held by the citizens of the county, Hanover offices were closed in his honor the day of his funeral. Kathryn Morris Brown in writing of Rural Plains in her Shelton history noted that in 1981 the residence was in a splendid state of preservation, was still occupied by the Shelton line, William Robert Shelton, Jr. being the present occupant-owner. The house, under shell fire in three wars, has the pock marks in evidence. It served temporarily during the Civil War as a hospital. It is a beautiful tree-shaded home, the walls 3 feet thick of red brick, the bricks reportedly having been brought from England. In our visit in 1984 we learned that Mary was deceased as of about 1960. The house has deteriorated to some extent. William Robert Shelton, Jr., the present occupant-owner, has a nursery farm on the acreage. He seems well respected in the neighbor­hood. He not being at home, we conversed with his wife. The syc­amores and oaks are huge, extant perhaps since Sarah Shelton wed Patrick Henry there in 1754. John Shelton, the builder of Rural Plains, and his wife Jane had 6 children: John, Mary, Sarah, William, Elizabeth and Thomas. Z. F. Shelton in his book The Sheltons gave details as follows:

Mary Shelton, daughter of John and Jane _________________________  Shelton, was

born about 1668. She wed John Sharp in Lancaster County.

Sarah Shelton, daughter of John and Jane ____ Shelton, was

born about 1675. She wed Richard Grissage but kept Shelton name. She had Ralph Shelton and other children, sons and daughters, the latter whose names are not at hand. Sarah is

said to have later married Joseph Bickley and inherited an

estate in England from his grandfather.

 

Ralph Shelton, son of Richard and Sarah Shelton Grissage, was born in 1698, died in 1743. He kept the Shelton name.

He wed in about 1722 and had 6 children: Elizabeth, Mary,

Richard, Jane, William and John.

Colonel Richard Shelton, son of Ralph (b. 1698), was born August 4, 1728. He died in 1821. He wed Mary Wright, named in his will in Amherst County. He and Joshua Shelton petitioned the courts for a permit for a ferry in Amherst County, Virginia in 1775. Being a Colonel, he is presumed to have fought in the Revolut­ionary War. He and Mary had at least one child, a daughter Nancy Shelton.

Nancy Shelton, daughter of Colonel Richard and Mary Wright Shelton, born in 1767, died in 1860. She wed John Rucker in Amherst County, who died there .

Jane Shelton, daughter of Ralph (b. 1698), was born May 22, 1730. She wed first Henry Gosney and second John Sandige.

William Shelton, son of Ralph (b. 1698), was born November 3, 1732.

                        born in 1723 in Middlesex County. He wed Jane Bennett in Pitt-

                        Sylvania County about 1741. His will was probated on July 18,

                        1808. In it he named Betsy Shelton, daughter of his nephew

                        Charles. His and Jane’s children were: Corporal Thomas Shelton,

                        William Shelton, and possibly others.

 

                                    Thomas Shelton, first son of Thomas and Jane Bennett                         

                                  Shelton, was born in 1742 who died in 1846 in Brandon,

                                    Mississippi or Branson, Missouri, the handwritten word                        

                                   being uncertain. He was 103, had wed 3 times, had 22

                                    children. Regrettably, the names of the children are

                                    not at hand.

was born about 1744. He died August 4, 1827. He wed Ann Lomax, had 9 children: Bennett,
