A wonderful map of the Overhill region which includes McMinn County.  The communities of Delano, Calhoun, Riceville, Etowah, Englewood, Athens & Niota showing on this map are in our county.  Just north are the Monroe County communities of Tellico Plains, Madisonville, Coker Creek, Sweetwater and Vonore.  South are towns of Polk County which include Copperhill, Ducktown, Turtletown, Farner, Reliance, Conasauga, Old Fort, Ocoee, Benton and the Wetmore community adjacent to Delano.  This region is called the "Overhill" in honor of the Over-the-Hill Cherokee People.

The Tennessee Overhill Tourism has a new project in process.  It is attempting to find the exact path of the Cherokee during the 1838 Enforced Removal as they passed through Monroe and McMinn Counties.  If your family has an oral history of the Cherokee passing thru the area of these two counties please call Tennessee Overhill Tourism at 423.263.5719
