Anna Ruth McCaslin

A native of Englewood and a McMinn County resident for the past 40 years, she was an Avon representative. A daughter of the late Elihue and Chessie Mae Carruth Barnett, she was a member of the Benton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Lula Barnett; two sisters, Mae Satterfield and Elizabeth Barnett; and four brothers, Fleetus Barnett, Kenneth Barnett, Dillard Barnett and Voyd Barnett.
Survivors include her husband, Carl D. McCaslin of Etowah; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joyce and James Watson of Riceville, and Annette McCaslin of Etowah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Dwain and Hazel McCaslin of Etowah, and Larry Edward and Janice McCaslin of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren, Carrie Williams, Ivan and Venice McCaslin, Matthew, Jeremiah and Jonathan Watson, Allison, Meredith, Brandon and Jessica McCaslin, Candice Taylor and Autumn Nicole and Devin Green; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Derrick of Englewood; one sister-in-law, Bennie Barnett of Englewood; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Elder Harold Haddock officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday and proceed to Green Hill Cemetery for the 11 a.m. burial.

John H. Hall

He was born on Oct. 10, 1929, in Valley Head, Ala. At six years of age, he moved to Cleveland and was educated in Cleveland and Bradley County schools. He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1946 and was discharged in 1948, holding the rank of sergeant. He worked for the Duplan Corporation from 1948 to 1972 and was employed in 1973 at Combustion Engineering as purchasing agent and in 1986 in sales for International Paper, until his retirement.
In 1964, he was elected to the Tennessee Legislature and, in 1966, he was elected Cleveland City Police Commissioner and served for six years. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and he loved his family, church and playing golf. He was preceded in death by one son, Brian Keith Hall; his parents, John and Clara Hall; two brothers, Paul Hall and Ralph Hall; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clyde and Marclie Stephens; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Roscoe and Willie Moats, C.F. Stephens Jr., Elizabeth Carr, Don Stone and Margaret Stone Roof.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Charlotte Hall; two stepchildren and their spouses, Carol Ann and Randy Yates and Rodney and Sara Burris, all of Benton; seven grandchildren, Tiffany and Chris Harris, Rodney G. Pallbearers will be Dale Atnip, Bill Moats, Eddie Davis, Scott Stephens, Dennis Stephens and Darin Stone. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Smith’s Sunday school class and his Cherokee Springs golfing buddies.

A native of Bradley County and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a 2002 graduate of McMinn County High School, where he was active with the football program. He was a student at Cleveland State Community College and was employed part-time with Jerry Monroe Construction Company. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Donnie Wilson.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Ray L. and Carolyn Axley of Knoxville; his mother and stepfather, Kay and Larry Sorah of Athens; one sister, Julie Axley of Atlanta, Ga.; his paternal grandparents, O.J. and Ruth Axley of Athens; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were 5 p.m. Sunday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dr. Carlos Peterson officiating. Family and friends assembled at the funeral home at 8 a.m. Monday and proceeded to New Zion Cemetery for the 9 a.m. burial, which concluded with the White Dove Liberation Ceremony.

Lucile Rogers Masengil
A native of Madisonville and a resident of Englewood for 15 years, she was a daughter of the late Ralph H. Rogers. She was a homemaker for 20 years and a former accountant for TVA and the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga. A graduate of Madisonville High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church and the Catherine Keith Circle. She was active with Englewood Cub Scouts as a Cub Master for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Masengil of Englewood; three sons, Brandon, Adam and Kevin Masengil, all of Englewood; her mother, Mirilla Watson Rogers of Madisonville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and George McKeehan and Anne and Eugene Martin, all of Madisonville; and one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Debbie Rogers of Madisonville.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Hubble and Bill Childress officiating and will conclude with the Celebration of Life video. Jack Charles Hicks
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Fred and Hazel Lee Hicks. He was a 50-year member of Manilla Lodge No. 633 and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Beaunitt Corporation and was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Maxwell Hicks; two brothers, Bill and L.D. Hicks; two sisters, Elizabeth Young and Nelva Patrick; and one infant daughter, Carol Ann Hicks.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Ann Palmer Hicks of Englewood; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Hazel Hicks of Englewood; two sisters and one brother-in-law, JoAnn Cobble of Niota, and Dollie and John Vanderbosch of El Paso, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Joyce Elizabeth Riggs Miller
A native of McMinn County, in the Idlewild community, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Arnold and Anna Mae McKenzie Riggs, of pioneer McMinn and Meigs families. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles H. "Charlie" Miller.
She was a graduate of McMinn County High School, attended Gulf Park Girls College in Gulf Port, Miss., and graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College. She was a member of Springbrook Golf & Country Club, where she was an avid golfer and member of the Women’s Golf Association, as well as an avid bridge player.
She served Meals on Wheels for 15 years and was well known as a generous person who enjoyed baking and preparing food to share with friends and family.
She was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, having joined in 1937.
She was one of the two oldest living Girl Scouts in Tennessee who received a curved bar. As a young girl, she was always involved in athletics, church, Scouts, PTA and youth activities and continued and encouraged these interests with her children, grandchildren and extended family of young people.
At the age of 14, she and a friend wrote a play that was performed at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga.
Survivors include her husband, Harold F. "Snooky" Miller of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth "Libby" Miller-Rogers and Jack Wayne Rogers; one grandson, Charles Howard Cunnyngham of Chattanooga; two granddaughters, Amy Miller Cunnyngham of Washington, D.C., and Ashley Elizabeth Johnson and husband, Andrew Thomas Johnson, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Frankie Sue Kinser of Chattanooga, and Joan R. Jack T. Perkinson
He was the founder and CEO of Perky Cap Company in Eatonton, Ga., and was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, the Robinson-Dance Sunday School Class and the Energizers group. His most recent affiliations have been with the Georgia College & State University Executive Forum, the Putnam County Hospital Board of Directors and Foundation, the Putnam County Diabetic Association and the Eatonton Chamber of Commerce. He was an enthusiastic supporter of virtually every civic and community project in the area.
He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of captain. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rachel; one brother, J.D.; and one sister, Josephine Burger.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Pat Nugent; one son, Scott; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Bill Williams; one brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Maria; a number of nieces and nephews; and his most cherished twin granddaughters, Sara Elizabeth and Rachel Alexandra Allen.

He was born on April 9, 1926, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

A son of the late Pink Julius and Mary Hayes Tallent, he lived in McMinn County for most of his life. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Magic Chef in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Lenar Graves, Hassie Dalton, Martha Graves, Bessie Walker, Pearl Breeden, Lillie Mullinax, Andrew Tallent and Grace Kincaid; and one daughter, Edna Rae Disney.

He was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Malissa Clark Powers; his wife, Geraldine Powers; one son, Danny Powers; two great-grandsons, Austin Cofer and Ryan Hughes; four brothers; and four sisters.

Formerly of Boston, Mass., where he worked more than 20 years for the Boston Transit Service, he was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Niota.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Howard of Athens; one son, Leon Vincent Howard of Athens; seven stepchildren, Tyrone, Charles, Kevin, Kenny, Lia, Myniesha and Kim, all of Athens; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Edith Howard of Birmingham, Ala.; and one sister, Kim Gibson of Memphis.

Leah Beth Mize
Born Feb. 23, 1955 in Los Angeles, Calif., she was a daughter of the late Wellands Leon and Carolyn Jo McCammon Allen.

A native of Taegu, Korea and a resident of the Etowah area for 31 years, she was a graduate of Kae Myung University, majoring in music. She was a member of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

Boyd Moorhouse
He was a charter member and an ordained deacon of Victory Baptist Church for many years. He was a member of Welcome Valley Baptist Church at the time he was called to his eternal home and was employed with Cleveland Tennessee Enamel Company for 21 years. At the time of his retirement, he was employed with the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Born Sept. 30, 1916, he was a son of the late Walter N. and Julia Lingerfelt Moorhouse and was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Alice McDonald Moorhouse; four brothers, Richard Moorhouse, Jack Moorhouse, John H. Moorhouse and Walter M. Moorhouse; and two sisters, Stella Hall and Elizabeth Crumley.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Frances Moorhouse of Benton; three sisters and spouses, Iola and Elton Brock of Benton, who were faithful part-time caregivers, Pearl and Carl Gross of Georgetown, and Velma and R.M. At the time of her retirement, she served as supervisor of the surgical unit.

Timothy "T.C." Miller
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Catharine Miller. Born in Athens, he graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College and began his career as a police officer. In 1965, he moved his family to Pensacola, Fla., and worked for the Pensacola Police Department. Retiring in 1986 after 21 years of service, he became a court security officer at the Federal Court House, retiring in 2003. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking, but he was happiest spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Gib Wimberly of Sweetwater; seven children and five spouses, Missy and John Brizzard, Tracy and Pae Tai Miller, Stacy Chaney, Stephanie and Jason Potts, and Shannon Miller-Pugh and David Pugh, all of Pensacola, Fla., Scott Miller of San Diego, Calif., and Taffy and Sean McSheehy of Ft. A native of Coal River, W.Va., a former resident of Maumee, Ohio, and a resident of Ten Mile for the past 33 years, he was a son of the late James and Mayme Mason Estep, and was preceded in death by one half-brother, Carter Miles. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for 25 years. A retired employee of Thomas & Betts, he was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army.

Watson; one sister, Dortha Inez Frazier; and one brother, Walter Lewis Powers. She was the first woman store manager for Sears, Roebuck and Company, with various businesses owned in Athens, Knoxville and Rockwood. She started with her brother at Walter Powers Realty in 1968 and was owner of Watson and West Realtors from 1975 to 1985. She was Realtor of the Year twice; was the first woman president of the Board of Realtors in 1981; won a trip to Hawaii for being the number one Knoxville agent; and was president of the Women’s Council.

She formed and played in the rhythm band at the Lake City Nursing Home and was a member of the Keen Club at Lake City. She taught school in the Campbell County School System for 34 years, and was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomas and Nell Elizabeth Masden; two sisters, Mary Helen "Juicy" Miller and Elizabeth Masden; and one brother, William Thomas "Budge" Masden.

He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College. He was a Life Master Bridge Player in the ACBL, an avid golfer, a member of BPOE No. 1927 and had obtained a private pilot’s license. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Daniel Lee Raby

He was born in the Erie community of Roane County in 1929 and proudly served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II in Japan. He married Myrel Hinds in 1948 and had one son, Johnny Lee. He was well known in the area as the "Merita Bread Salesman" for many years until he retired. After Myrel’s death, he married Shirley Rucker of Sweetwater. He was a longtime member of Johnson Baptist Church in Philadelphia (Erie community), but joined Lee’s Chapel in the past few years. He loved attending church and was a faithful friend to his pastors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara John "Johnnie" and Sexton "Sec" Raby; his first wife, Myrel; four brothers, Alex, Bert, Stanley and Ed; and two sisters, Nell Hanley and Mary Galyon.

She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens and was a daughter of the late Paul O. and Mary Katherine Hicks Dunn. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Frazier of Etowah; one brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Cecelia Dunn of Chattanooga; one uncle, Tony Dunn of Etowah; one nephew, Wesley Dunn of Mt. Anne L. Reed
Born Sept. 11, 1909, in Athens to the late James Harold Gann and the late Mary Elizabeth Shoffiette, she married the late Frank Reed in Athens in 1932. He died in 1970. She was a buyer for bridal retailers and had worked at Stewart’s Department Store in Louisville, Ky., and was manager of Selman’s Ladies Department Store, also in Louisville, Ky. She was a member of the Highland Women’s Club in Louisville, Ky., and sang in her church choir. In 1991, she moved to Estes Park, Colo., from Lakeland, Fla., where she was very active in the Presbyterian Apartments Retirement Community. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bennett Penn of Estes Park, Colo.; one granddaughter, Keri Kelsey-Gaona and husband, Richie; one great-grandson, Alexander Reed Gaona; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Decatur United Methodist Church and was a member of the AMVETS Post No. 90 and the American Legion Post No. 79. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Nellie Osinga Scholten; his first wife, Ruth Scholten; two infant sons; one brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Gardner Scholten of Decatur; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Diane Scholten of Lockport, Ill.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Judy and Russ Mushrow of Gaitherburg, Md., Karen Rowe of Appleton, Wisc., and Jolene and Dustin Fairbanks and Lois and James Turner, all of Athens; one sister Ester Elliott of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren, Jeff Rowe, Elizabeth and Todd Hirst, Eric Rowe, Arron, Matt and Greg Mushrow, John and Jason Scholten and Anthony and Joshua Fairbanks.

A native of Madisonville, Ky., and a Tennessee resident for the past 40 years, he was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, and was a self-employed carpenter. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, J.H. Bivens Jr.; and his grandfather, Holt Bivens.

H.E. "Casey" Case Smith
Born in Sweetwater, she was a graduate of Sweetwater High School and had attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a longtime resident of High Point, N.C., and was employed with a variety of organizations during her life, including Head Start, Guilford County Schools (High Point City Schools), Westchester Academy and Hickory Printing/High Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Smith; her mother, Helen Henderson; her father, Bruce Case; one brother, Cecil Case; and one sister, Delores Crabtree.
Survivors include three children, Marcus W. Smith, Leslie Smith Brooks and Eric A. Smith; one sister, Alice Ann Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

William Franklin Grubb
Born in Riceville in 1910, he was a son of the late William H. and Margaret Montgomery Grubb. Following graduation from McMinn County High School, he enrolled in Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, where he played football and was for one year awarded Most Valuable Player both at Carson-Newman and in the Smoky Mountain Conference. He was inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame and, in 1966, was also honored as a Distinguished Alumnus.
After graduation, he was employed as director of the Baptist Student Union on the University of Tennessee campus until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was trained as a bomber pilot. Until bad weather delayed his arrival at the starting base, he had been selected to be a part of the famous Doolittle Raid over Japan. He always regretted missing it.
Subsequent to the end of the war, he and his wife, the late Elizabeth Frizzell Grubb, of San Antonio, Texas, were stationed at several sites in Europe and Japan, plus several bases in the U.S. Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he and his wife returned to Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where they had been stationed on two previous occasions.
He was employed by First City Bank of Fort Walton Beach as a Senior Vice President for Public Relations. After 19 years he again retired, and he and his wife returned to San Antonio, Texas, where they lived until their deaths.
He and his wife were active and lifelong members of Southern Baptist churches. They joined a church in all of their different locations holding various positions. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Grubb, formerly of Riceville, and Charlotte Grubb Robbins, formerly of Chattanooga; two brothers, P.J. Grubb, formerly of Riceville, and James Wiley Grubb, formerly of Chattanooga.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Grubb Fleming of Florence, Ala.; two nieces, Virginia C. Robbins of Chattanooga, and Julia Ann Fleming of Birmingham, Ala.; and two nephews, Glenn H. Fleming of Knoxville, and Robert G. Fleming of Abbeville, S.C.
Graveside services were 3 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, Texas. A memorial service was 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Porter Loring Mortuary with the Rev. John Payne officiating.

A native of Monroe County and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Joseph E. Sr. and Minnie J. Harris Brakebill, and was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Marcia Lynn McCoy; one sister, Gladys Allen; and two brothers, Thomas E. Brakebill and Lewis E. Brakebill. He was a member of Niota United Methodist Church, was a retired carpenter and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mildred Edna Edgmon Brakebill; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Hubert McCoy, Jody and Bob Joines and Jill and R.L. Stephens, all of Niota; one sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Jim Linkle of Sunset Beach, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Reed and Beatrice Brakebill of Niota; seven grandchildren and spouses, Carol and Shawn Rumbolt, Kathy McCoy, Richard McCoy, Patrick Stephens, Julie and William Rikard, Michael Joines and Tina and Jamie Benedickt; six great-grandchildren; special friends and neighbors, Gordon and Fannie Miller of Niota; and several nieces and nephews.
