James Ray Morrow
Died: 02-02-2004

James Ray Morrow, 66, of Riceville, died early Monday morning, Feb. 2, 2004, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Cleveland.

A native of Polk County, he had been a resident of Etowah for 32 years and had resided in Riceville for the past 4 months. He was a son of the late Norman Morrow and George and Selma Burchell and was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by one brother, Norman Morrow Jr.

Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Jeffrey Morrow of Rockford, Ill., Steven and Evelyn Morrow of Rockford, Ill., Rex and Dottie Morrow of Riceville, and Patrick and Cathy Morrow of Etowah; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Rachel Marasti and Joann Gadish; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Pastor Pat McCulley officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Cochran Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

William Roy "Bill Arp
Died: 02-01-2004

William Roy "Bill" Arp, 71, of Calhoun, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at his residence following several months of illness.

Born July 3, 1932 in Bartow County, Ga., he was a son of the late Roy William Arp. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Elks Club and the Cherokee Promenators Dance Club. He was a member of the Saint Clement’s Catholic Church and had worked in the trucking industry for over 29 years. He worked for Mason Dixon Trucking for 22 years and Mohawk Industries for years also. He was a veteran of the Korean War and, for 3 1/2 years, had served on the USS Atule SS403. In addition, he was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans organization.

Survivors include his mother, Thelma Mansfield Arp; his wife of 50 years, Theresa Latinville Arp of Calhoun, Ga.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Gail Arp Davies and Jeanne Arp and Dann McDade, all of Calhoun, Ga.; and one grandson, Roy Davies of Calhoun, Ga..

Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint Clement’s Catholic Church with Monsignor Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Etowah at 3 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Robert Daniel, Jack Bibb, Dick Surdykowski, Bill Loy, Gary Beisser and Bill Franklin.

A wake service will be 7 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Thomas Funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Clement’s Catholic Church.

Imogene Black Hooper
Died: 02-01-2004

Imogene Black Hooper, 84, of Etowah, died Sunday morning, Feb. 1, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

A native and life long resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Gertie Ervin Black. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Etowah and was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth B. Hooper; two grandchildren, Brian K. Hooper and Adrian Kenneth Hooper; one great-granddaughter, Jaden Ashlyn Buys; three sisters, Mary Lee Pass, Bertie Patrick and Annie Mitchell Morris; and one brother, Homer Black.

Survivors include, one daughter and son in law, Gail and Arnold Sledge of Athens; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Tommy and Laura Hooper and Eddie Hooper, all of Etowah, and Mike and Mitzi Hooper of Loudon; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Hooper, Tonya Presswood, Candace Hooper, Cindy Bible, Pam Hooper, David Cooley, Shannon Loyd and Jessica Green; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Cora Bell and Cecil Tallent and Irene McDowell, all of Etowah, and Edna Mae Greg of Cleveland; two brothers and sisters in law, Clarence and Ann Black of Cleveland, and Robert and Lee Black of St. Charles, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim McElhaney and the Rev. Doyle Lloyd officiating. Services will conclude with the Celebration of Life video. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday and proceed to Etowah Cemetery for the 11 a.m. burial.

Pallbearers will be Mickey McInturff, Mike Bible, Darrell Snyder, Ivan Snyder, Bill White, Jerry Hooper, Jeffrey Hooper and David Cooley.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lola Hicks Creasman
Died: 02-01-2004

Lola Hicks Creasman, 90, of Athens, died Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2004, at Willow Acres Assisted Living in Riceville.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Newt and Minnie Watts Hicks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Creasman; one son, Billy Jack Creasman; and three brothers, H.J., Johnny and Tommy Hicks. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and was associated with Van Raalte Hosiery Mill for many years.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Smith of Manchester; one son and daughter-in-law, David Gene and Elsie Creasman of Ft. Worth, Texas; one granddaughter, Mia Smith of Sugarland, Texas; five grandsons, Steve Creasman and Joe Creasman, both of Knoxville, Phil Smith of Acworth, Ga., Mark Creasman of Antioch, and Scott Creasman of Ft. Worth, Texas; four sisters, Naomi Hughes of Johnson City, Margaret Starr Jones of Knoxville, Ruth Williford of Santa Clara, Calif., and Glenn Stephens of San Jose, Calif.; and one brother, Walter Hicks of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Brown officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum of McMinn Memory Gardens.

The body will be in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ben Curtis Kennedy
Died: 01-30-2004

Ben Curtis Kennedy, 84, of Newport, Wash. for 63 years, and formerly of the Sewee community near Niota, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Newport Community Hospital.

A native of McMinn County, he was a son of the late James L. "Fate" and Effie Simpson Kennedy. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Bruce Kennedy and Howard Kennedy. He was a retired farmer and lumber and timber dealer and was involved in several civic and agricultural organizations, including the Agriculture Stabilization Committee. He was a member of the Noble Grange and a past commissioner of the Newport Cemetery district.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gretener Kennedy of Newport, Wash; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Madeline Kennedy of Oldtown, Idaho; one granddaughter and spouse, Cheryll and Brad Fickett of Post Falls, Idaho; one great-grandson, Bradley Curtis Fickett; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Nelle K. Ward of Sweetwater, and Mary Fay and Lee A. Griswold of Bristol, Va.; one sister-in-law, Nelda M. Kennedy of Niota; five nieces; and one nephew.

A private memorial service will be conducted for the family in the chapel of Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Hasselbach officiating.

Thomas Malone
Died: 01-30-2004

Thomas Malone, 60, of Athens, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his home.

He was a son of the late T.R. Malone and was the owner and operator of the Pop a Top Veteran’s Club in Riceville. He enjoyed refinishing wood and antique furniture as a hobby.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Janey Dantzler Malone of Athens; his mother, Leona Malone of Columbus, Miss.; one daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Stanley Weaver, of Clinton; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Helen Malone, of Benton; one sister and brother-in-law, Flora and Harry Olsen of Columbus, Miss.; one brother-in-law and sister in law, Bob and Joyce Dantzler of Cleveland; two grandchildren, Ian Thomas Weaver and Hannah Weaver; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Nichole Weaver; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services were noon Monday in McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Mike Hawkins officiating.

The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ziegler Funeral Home.

Tamyra Kay Lashbrook Yagel
Died: 01-30-2004

Tamyra Kay Lashbrook Yagel, 62, of Decatur, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

She was a past president of the Moose Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., past president and treasurer of the VFW in Ormond Beach, Fla. and a fund raiser. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Florence Moore Lashbrook; and one daughter Detree Yagel.

Survivors include three daughters, Robin Walker and Jill Anderson, both of Decatur, and Tine Bender; one brother, Garth Lashbrook; 11 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

There will be no formal visitation or service.

Michael D. "Bucky" Morgan
Died: 01-29-2004

Michael D. "Bucky" Morgan, 54, of La Vergne, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Nashville.

He was a sergeant in the Tennessee Highway Patrol Department with 32 years of service, 16 of which were with the THP tactical squad. He was a retired member of the Tennessee Army National Guard and a member of Miracle Baptist Church in La Vergne. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Dave and Stella Morgan of Etowah; and his maternal grandparents, Stella Miller of Etowah, and Robert McCampbell of Canton, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Thomas Morgan of La Vergne; one son, Michael D. Morgan II of La Vergne; two daughters and one son-in-law, Michelle and Robbie Crips and Carmen Morgan, all of La Vergne; two granddaughters, Alex Crips and Sophie Morgan, both of La Vergne; his parents, Harry and Velma Morgan of Etowah; and one sister, Bonny Hadacek of Chattanooga.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hamilton Hills Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Scarlett officiating. Burial followed in Maple View Cemetery in Smyrna with his Tennessee Highway Patrol "family" serving as active pallbearers.

The family received friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Jarvis E. "Jabo" Odum

Jarvis E. "Jabo" Odum, 93, of Athens, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

A son of the late Oscar Franklin and Nancy Carolyn Wyatt Odum, he was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. He was a retired brick mason, a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Marie Pardue Odum, on Feb. 15, 1998; one son, Ricky Dale Odum; one daughter, Nancy Carolyn Hollomon; one son-in-law, Fred T. Spain; four grandchildren, Steven Ray Hollomon, Dendel Neil Hollomon, Bryan Lynn Odum and Harry Megill; and one great-granddaughter, Katrina Anne Conn.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, J.E. "Sonny" and Lilly Odum of Athens; two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda Spain of Athens, and Juanita and Frank Spain of Niles, Mich.; one brother, Clarence A. "C.A." Odum of Etowah; nine grandchildren and spouses, Robin and Don Long, Scott and Jennifer Odum, Elaina Conn, Ryna and Harry May, Kathy and Rex Henry, Ricky Hollomon, Eddie and Jutta Megill, Stacey and John McWilliams and Carol Lynn Odum; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Sullins Cemetery with Pastor Jan Munch officiating.

Minda Vaughn Boatman, 90, of Englewood, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at NHC of Athens.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County and a former resident of Englewood, she was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Floyd Boatman. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Englewood and was owner/manager of Moses Café in Englewood.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law, Thelbert D. Boatman of Etowah, Floyd "Tom" and Millie Boatman of Anderson, S.C., and Charles W. Boatman of Puerto Penasco, Mexico; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Terrence Patton, 83, of Etowah, died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, 2004, at Etowah Health Care Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Etowah, he was a son of the late William Kimsey and Daisy Trammel Patton. He was retired from TVA and was also retired from American Medical, as a pharmaceutical representative.

Survivors include one daughter, Terry A. Talley of Chattanooga; one sister-in-law, Zelda Mae "Curley" Patton of Englewood; one brother, William K. Patton Jr.; and one nephew, William T. Blair of Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Chism officiating. Burial will follow in Etowah Cemetery.

Maggie Lee Gossett Bidwell
Died: 02-03-2004

Maggie Lee Gossett Bidwell, 82, of Athens, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Pink and Nancy Butler Gossett, and was of the Baptist faith. She was a beloved mother and grandmother and a local housekeeper for most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luttie Bidwell; and one sister, Anna Bell Goins.

Survivors include six daughters and three sons-in-law, Cathy and Carl Teague, Juanita Bidwell and Carolyn Bidwell, all of Athens, Barbara Godfrey and Mary and Joe Massengill, all of Cleveland, and Louise and Bobby Nelson of Cleveland, Ohio.; two sons, Ernest Bidwell of Polk County, and Clifford Bidwell of Athens; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Sally Gossett of Athens.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. John Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Sullins Cemetery.

Otsie "nee Gay" Jimerson
Died: 02-03-2004

Otsie "nee Gay" Jimerson, 98, of Elyria, Ohio, and formerly of Englewood, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at New Life Hospice in Lorain, Ohio, after a short illness.

Born in Liberty Hill in Englewood, she lived and worked there for 70 years and retired from Etowah Sportswear. She also lived in Centerville before moving to Elyria, Ohio, to live at the home of her daughter and son-in-law for the last 10 years. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill Church of Christ, was the wife of a farmer and was an excellent cook and seamstress, providing for the needs of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, John Jimerson; one great-granddaughter, Kelly Mahan; her parents, John and Alice Gay; five brothers, Lowe Cardin, Bob Gay, Akie Gay, Hobert Gay and Elbert Gay; and three sisters, Rossie Casteel, Ozra Maupins and Lenis Bradley.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pauline and Bill Adams of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mae Smith of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, and Lela Rae and Frank Lach of Elyria, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Pauline Jimerson of Centerville; one special grandson, James Champion of Oakland, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Ambers William "Bill" Lyons, 62, of Englewood, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

A son of the late James E. and Bertie Howard Lyons, he was a native of Chillicolte, Ohio, a former resident of Ft. Pierce, Fla. and had resided in Englewood for the past 11 years. He was an avid league bowler and was self-employed as a drywall hanger. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Lucille Lyons; one son, Jeffrey Steven Lyons; and three brothers, Charlie, Jerry and George Lyons.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Joanne Farris Lyons of Englewood; two sons, William Joseph Lyons of Athens, and Kenneth William Lyons of Ten Mile; four brothers, Ronald Lyons of Pennsylvania, Kenneth Lyons of Florida, and Jim Lyons and Bob Howard, both of Delaware, Ohio; two sisters, Carol Fowler of Columbus, Ohio, and Martina Harper of Delaware, Ohio; three grandchildren, Joshua Ambers Lyons, Jessica Sara Lynn Venters and Brady Hawthorne; one great-granddaughter, Brandy Hawthorne; and several nieces and nephews.

Daniel Justin Filyaw, 19, of Decatur, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

He was of the Baptist Faith and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Cason "Fuzz" Fairbanks and Leroy Filyaw, his aunt, Reba Fairbanks; and a special cousin, Tiny Bonds.

Survivors include his parents, Daniel and Carolyn Fairbanks Filyaw of Decatur; his loving girlfriend, Amanda Cody; one brother, Lee Allen Filyaw and his friend, Amy McGinnis, both of Decatur; he was expecting a niece, Sarah Leann Justine Filyaw; his paternal grandmother, Patricia Jablonski and husband, Craig, of San Antonio, Texas; and his maternal grandmother, Sarah Fairbanks of Decatur.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Malone officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Decatur.

Cam Alexandra Boggess, 90, of Decatur, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of McMinn County and a former resident of the Clearwater community near Athens, he had lived in Meigs County for more than 20 years. He was a son of the late Simmon and Bell Goins Boggess and was preceded in death by his first wife, Arie Emma Robinson Boggess; three sons, Ross, Roy and Ray Boggess; one daughter, Faye Boggess; and two brothers, Tom and Homer Boggess.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Morgan Boggess of Decatur; nine daughters, Emma Boggess, Bobbie Ramirez and Patsy Murray, all of Decatur, Ruby Rue, Mary Akins, Pauline Hickman, Ivie Hall and Margie Caraway, all of Athens, and Ruth Bowers of Etowah; four sons, James Boggess of Niota, Loyd Boggess of Riceville, J.C. Boggess of Etowah, and Floyd Boggess of Cleveland; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Benny Ray Morgan, 49, of Athens, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital.

A native of Madisonville and longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Reed and Etta Worthy Morgan. He was preceded in death by one sister, Loretta Hardy; and one brother, Melvin Lester Morgan.

Survivors include one daughter, Rose Morgan of Etowah; two sons, Timmy Lee Morgan of Athens, and Matthew Morgan of Etowah; two sisters, Norma Sylvester of Madisonville, and Bernice Vann of Memphis; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James and Tina Morgan of Crossville, John Morgan of Englewood, and Timmy and Brenda Morgan of Athens; and several aunts and uncles.

A daughter of the late Joe and Ida Buckner, she was a native and lifelong resident of Englewood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Tucker; four brothers, Edd, Robert, Lonnie and Buck "Lewis" Buckner; three sisters, Donnie and Rachel Buckner and Ellie Casteel; and two stepsons, Walter and Curtis Tucker.

William M. Wade of Riceville, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Ernest M. and Cleo Benson Wade. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Wade; and two sisters, Thelma Womac and Mildred Clark. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served three tours of combat duty in Vietnam and worked there for more than a year as a civilian. Upon retiring from the military, he was employed with TVA, CSX Railroad and the McMinn County Sheriff’s Department.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 35 years, Nhai "Lai" Wade of Riceville; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Joanne Wade of Atlanta, Ga., David Wade of Charleston, S.C., and Carmen Wade of San Fernando, Calif.; two daughters and one future son-in-law, Helen Wade and Tony Trinidad, both of Tampa, Fla., and Priscilla Wade of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Ernest Junior Wade of Riceville; one sister, Cleatta Wade Townsend of Chattanooga; and two grandchildren, Ashley Wade and Waverly Dean.

He was born and raised in the Oak Grove community, was of the Baptist faith and attended Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was employed for 20 years with Loomis Packing Company in Sweetwater and was then employed and retired after 22 years with the Sweetwater City School System. He was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy and Arlice Moore McCowan; one sister, Frances Latham; and two brothers, Houston and Timothy McCowan.

She was born in Bessemer, Ala., but spent most of her life in and around Etowah. She was a member of Lamontville Baptist Church, had a love for crafts and candle making and will be well remembered as "Mrs. Santa Claus," due to her passion for collecting Christmas memorabilia. She was a daughter of the late William Theodore and Carrie Lee Wilson Brock, and was preceded in death by one son, Larry Martin.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Audrey "Speck" Martin of Decatur; one daughter, Linda Martin of Benton; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Ron and Polly Martin and Mike and Debbie Martin, all of Etowah, and Charlene Franzen; two sisters, Joy Tilson of Etowah, and Wilma Dale of Benton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members in 11 states.

A native of Polk County, he spent most of his life in McMinn County. He was preceded in death by his father, James Arthur Lee; his mother and stepfather, Ida Hibberts Lee Mason and Buster Mason; one brother, E.W. Mason; and one sister, Loraine Mason. He was a member and deacon of Marshall Hill Baptist Church, and was also a member of Woodman of the World for many years. He retired from Athens Utilities Board, as manager of the gas division, after 32 years of service.

Mattie Harper McCroskey, 68, of Etowah, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in an Etowah nursing home.

She was a daughter of Zenobia Deed and Patrick Ervin and was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson McCroskey. She sang gospel music with Marion Williams and the Stars of Faith and her singing career took her all over Europe and Africa. She sang for Pope John Paul III, kings and queens, royalty and many other heads of state. She shared the gospel entertainment stage with the likes of Clara Ward, the Swan Silvertone Singers, Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland. She was a member of Charming Wonders gospel group that started in Etowah in 1968 and was a devoted member of Star Bethel Baptist Church in Etowah.

Survivors include one daughter, Maria S. A daughter of the late Rual Lester and Barton Grace Gaston Johnson, she was a native of McMinn County and a resident of Etowah for most of her life.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and an active member of the Athens Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Dunn; one sister; and four brothers.

Danny Warren "Sugar Bear" Goodwin III, 28, of Athens, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., but lived most of his young life in Athens. He attended Job Core, where he obtained his GED diploma. In April 2002, he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and then became a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Niota. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Bumgardner; and his grandmother, Tilda Marie Bumgardner.

Survivors include one daughter, Ayana White of Athens; two aunts and spouses, Esther and Bruce McCowan of Athens, and Arnetta and Alonzo Hagans of Wilmington, N.C.; five uncles and spouses, Warren and Lena Bumgardner III, Douglas and Denise Bumgardner and Kenneth Bumgardner, all of Baltimore, Md., David and Lori Bumgardner of Seattle, Wash., and Victor Bumgardner of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandfather, Warren Bumgardner Jr., of Kissimmee, Fla.; a host of cousins and friends; and a special friend, Tara Phillips of Knoxville.

"Berry" Carroll; one stepson, Johnny Carroll; and five brothers, Kermit, Max, Ed, Kenneth and Herman Stone. She was a member of the South Liberty Church of Christ and had assisted her late husband in the grocery business for many years. She was a member of the Athens Area Council of the Arts and the Community Artist League and was a well-known artist in the East Tennessee area.

She was a member of Liberty Church of Jesus Christ and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ on Oct. 28, 2001, and received the gift of the Holy Ghost in 2002. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie Fairman and Kathleen Green; and one brother, Wesley Fairman.

Luke "Adrin" Farley, 75, of Decatur, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at his residence.

He was a member of St. Girard Catholic Church in Rossville, Ga., and was a member of the East Ridge American Legion and the Meigs County AMVETS in Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Dorothy Farley.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years in April, Jane Wise Farley of Decatur; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kit and Lisa Farley of Friendsville, and Kevin Farley of Pikeville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Sonny Metts of Decatur; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ilien and Dill Causby and Dorothy Ann Farley, all of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, Beth, Casey, Shelbi and Avery Metts and Alyssa, Joshua and Kane Farley; and two great-grandchildren, Tara and Abby Farley.

John Wesley Powell, 92, of Athens, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A son of the late Thomas T. and Ella Sutton Powell, he was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. He was the oldest member of Fairview Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Union Carbide Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelle Faye Mahoney Powell on Sept. 23, 1991; one daughter, Wanda Lee Powell; one brother, J. Lawrence Powell; and two sisters, Ruth Puett and Mamie Lee Smith.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Glenna and Jim Gilliam of Athens, Billie Crook of Nashville, and Betty and Bob Beck of Helena, Mont.; one sister, Mildred Grisham of Athens; two brothers, James Powell of Oakdale, and Thomas Powell of Strawberry Plains; four grandchildren and spouses, Pam and T.J. Jurgeluks, Ken Crook and fiancée, Amanda Hopkins, Amy and Lynn Spears and Eric Gilliam and friend, Angie Watkins; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Jurgeluks, Lindsay Jurgeluks, Leslie Jurgeluks and Ashlynn Spears; and a special friend, Sue Ball.

Joseph A. "Paddle" Casteel, 79, of Englewood, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at his residence.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Horace and Alma Brown Casteel. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Englewood, where he served as a deacon and choir member. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Englewood and was retired from Athens Products. He was a veteran and POW of World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, American Campaign Medal and EAME Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years and the mother of his children, Margaret McCaslin Casteel; two sons, Joseph Micheal Casteel and Randy Casteel; his second wife, Ada Bryson Casteel; one great-granddaughter, Macy Margaret Speed; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, William O. and Louise Prichard Casteel and Lester Casteel.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gary and Maria Casteel of Miami, Fla.; one daughter, Teresa Casteel of Englewood; two grandsons, Levi Casteel and Joseph Adams, both of Miami, Fla.; two granddaughters, Ginger Speed of Knoxville, and Cheri Kelly of La Crosse, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Madison Speed, both of Knoxville; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Marie and Jake Haney, Edna Green, Princess and Carl Reed, Gracie and Jack Raper and Carrie Sue and Lynn Brown, all of Englewood; one sister-in-law, Freda Casteel Watson; several nieces and nephews; and three very special and loving caregivers, Jill Torbett, Nettie Williams and Joy Shadden.

Agatha Elizabeth Moon, 90, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at a Cleveland hospital.

Born in Meigs County on July 31, 1913, she was a retired registered nurse and dedicated her life to helping people. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Jacob Moon and Hattie Ethel Hood; four brothers, James Jacob Moon, Walter Agnew Moon, Harvey Lester Moon and John Austin Moon; and one sister, Margaret Euphemia Kelly.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Lee Moon and Nathaniel H. Moon, both of Decatur; four sisters, Dorothy Marie Whitehead of Knoxville, Phyllis Ethel Shelton of Calhoun, Julie Lee Madix of Oak Ridge, and Mabel Louise McKinney of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter of the late Will and Jane Runyon Farner, she was a native of Farner and a resident of Athens for most of her life. She was a member of North Athens Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Athens Hosiery Mill. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Warren G., Hayden, Lester, Harvey and Fred Farner; and six sisters, Monnie Axley, Jessie Winder, Bessie Melton, Nola Ellis, Alvilla Calhoun and Hazel Farner.

Mirdeth Amanda Pullen Roberts, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2004.

Leaving this world with the same quiet dignity that distinguished her life, she devoted nearly a century of service to God, her family, her community and her church.

Born in Decatur in 1911, she was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was an alumnus of Tennessee Wesleyan College and, although she never held a job outside the home, she was known as a skilled seamstress in the area and was a constant supporter of her late husband, E.F. "Gene" Roberts’, many civic activities and his lengthy participation in gospel music, for which he was widely known.

She found fulfillment in the simple pleasures of nature, being an ardent gardener. Not only did she have an abundance of flowers and plants outside her house each year, but she also kept a bright spot of flowers inside at all times to cheer her family and friends. She was a daughter who earned the unquestioned respect of her parents, a faithful and loyal wife of 67 years, a mother who gave unconditional love to her children and their spouses, a grandmother who provided each grandchild with a solidarity that has contributed to their personal happiness and success, and a great-grandmother who shared a common spirit with even the tiniest one.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Ella Rose Pullen; three brothers, Corbin, Hubert and Cecil Pullen; one sister, Veda Pullen Powers; and one granddaughter, Sandra Elizabeth Dannel.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bobby" Pullen and Anna Jean Roberts of Decatur; two daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor R. and J.W. Dannel of Athens, and Celia R. and Charles Thompson of Fountain City; six grandchildren and spouses, Mike and Michelle Dannel of Athens, Margaret and Kevin Eichelburger of Newport News, Va., Cindy and Sam Jiles of Knoxville, Caroline and George Hatcher of Greenbrier, Sharmin and Clint Baker of Decatur, and Shane and Sharon Roberts of Athens; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, June Liner of Athens, Juanita Bentley of Gallatin, and Verna Pullen, a 30-year missionary to Africa who now lives in Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Tom Blacksheir officiating. Burial will follow in Goodfield Church Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Becky Jean Taggart, 42, of Etowah, died early Friday morning, Feb. 27, 2004, at her residence.

A native of Waupaca, Wis., she had been a resident of McMinn County for the past three years. She was of the Methodist faith and had worked as a school bus driver and a housekeeper at Woods Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Harlan C. Jensen Sr.; her maternal grandparents, James and Margaret Ryan; and three nephews.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Taggart of Etowah; two sons, Jason Robert Taggart and Adam William Taggart, both of Waupaca, Wis.; one daughter, Amy Jo Taggart of Etowah; her parents, Harlan C. Jr., and Jean Marie Jensen of Waupaca, Wis.; her grandmother, Ramona Jensen; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lynne and Ronald Minton, Nancy and David Hinte and Theresa Jensen, all of Waupaca, Wis.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harlan C. Nellie Lucile Elkins, 99, of Etowah, died late Thursday evening, Feb. 26, 2004, at Etowah Health Care Center.

A daughter of the late William H. and Kitty Maxwell Peck, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. She was the oldest member of North Etowah Baptist Church, and was the oldest living graduate of McMinn County High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Elkins; and one son, Joe E. Elkins.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Elbert W. and Charlsie Elkins of Athens, and Ross and Glenna Elkins of Etowah; one daughter and son-in-law, Dean and John Ray McKeehan of Athens; one daughter-in-law, Linnell Elkins of Chattanooga; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Anne Thomas Long

Mary Anne Thomas Long, 73, of Athens died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 26, 2004, at her residence.

A lifelong resident of Athens, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Horace R. and Neenah "Billie" Billingsley Thomas. She was a longtime community leader and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for the past 70 years, where she had served in all offices of the church. She was chosen Athens Mother of the Year in 1993 and was chosen Tennessee Mother of the Year by the Tennessee Mothers Association. She was a member of the Athens Chapter No. 159 OES. She was past president of Athens Federated Garden Club; past president of Athens Browning Federated Woman’s Club; past president of McMinn County Library Board; and had served on the Fort Loudoun Regional Library Board. She served as president of the PTA in several schools, being a member from 1956 until 1978. She was a strong supporter of the Adult Basic Education program "Help Adults Learn," and had been a volunteer swimming instructor for the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Long of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Randy Ensminger of Cleveland, and Mary Elizabeth and Tom McCormack of Athens, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sheila Long of Readyville, and Rob and Beverly Long of Englewood; five granddaughters, Jamie Ensminger, Mandy Ensminger, Rachel Long, Calli McCormack and Cassi McCormack; four grandsons, Chris Long, Josh Ensminger, Josh Alexander and Ryan Ensminger; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Harold Coker of Chattanooga, and Neenah and Guy Willingham of Birchwood; two sisters-in-law, Jo Long of Athens, and Peggy Rogers and husband, Jim, of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Chris Long, Josh Ensminger, Ryan Ensminger and Joshua Alexander, and Carl Richesin, Jack Underdown, Frank McMillian and Trey Seymour.

The body will be in state at Jerry Smith Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Friday, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
