Robbie Lee Poindexter Painter

Robbie Lee Poindexter Painter, 89, of Asbury Retirement Center in Maryville, died suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, as a result of injuries received in a fall.

She was a daughter of the late Thomas Pledger and Nellie Cutcher Poindexter and was also preceded in death by her husband, George Andrew "Andy" Painter Sr.; and one son, George Andrew "Gig" Painter Jr.

She was raised in Etowah and graduated from Etowah High School. She attended East Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College with a music certification. She also had a business degree from Draughton Business College in Knoxville. She taught music in Polk County for two years and then went to work at the L&N Railroad in Etowah, as a secretary to the master mechanic.

During World War II, she worked the Red Cross Canteen at the L&N Depot. She was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was active with youth, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and played the piano and organ. She married George Painter in 1945 and they moved to Athens when he was elected County Court Clerk, running on the GI ticket in the battle of Athens. She worked as a clerk in his office and later went to work as a payroll clerk for the construction company that built Bowater Southern.

While in Athens, she was an active member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and often played the piano and organ for services. From 1967 to 1974 she was "Fraternity Mom" for Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at Tennessee Wesleyan College. She retired from the McMinn County Department of Human Services after 28 years of service. She was a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star and at the time of her death a Life Time Member of the Athenian Chapter.

In 1997, she moved to Asbury Retirement Home, where she was living at the time of her death. At Asbury, she was active in the Asbury UMW Circle and the "Old Chimers" Tone Chime Choir. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Maryville at the time of her death and was an avid Braves Fan.

In 1981, she moved to Cleveland to live with her daughter and son-in-law. While in Cleveland, she was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member of "Friends," the Fealty Sunday School Class, where she served as a teacher, the Pearl Abel Circle, Prime Timers and served as president for two years.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Flavis Casson Jr of Georgetown; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Painter of Maryville; one granddaughter and spouse, Shannon and Andrew Johnson of Brentwood; and two grandsons, Kevin Painter of Maryville, and Lee Casson of Nashville.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Rusty Taylor, the Rev. Ted Painter, the Rev. Larry Carroll and the Rev. Brenda Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery in Athens.

Her grandsons, Kevin Painter, Lee Casson and Andrew Johnson and her SigEp Boys, Hugh Walker, Lee Stewart, Bo Perkins and Bob Perry will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Hugh Arnold Smith

Died: 12-31-2004

Hugh Arnold Smith, 74, of Athens, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, Dec. 31, 2003, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville.

A native of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Andrew J. and Edna Murphy Smith and was preceded in death by two brothers, J.C. and Ernest Smith; and two sisters, Ruth Powell and Deloice Shell. He was a lifelong member of East Athens Baptist Church, where he was the head usher for many years, as well as, a part time custodian of the church. He was the owner and operator of Jo's Grocery in the East Athens area for many years and served in the Tennessee National Guard and the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict, where he obtained the rank of Sergeant.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Nichols Smith of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Bob Housley of Athens, and Shan and Brett Miller of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Hugh Arnold "Butch" and Jan Smith of Athens; five granddaughters, Mary Allison Housley, Maria Rose Housley, Lynne S. Herndon and husband, James, Joellen Smith and Beth Smith; one grandson, Brodie Miller; one sister and brother-in-law, June and Jay Lingerfelt of Chattanooga; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Nina Smith of Athens, and Neal and Gerwonda Smith of Athens; two sisters-in-law, Hazel and Liz Smith of Athens; and one brother-in-law, Jimmy Powell.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Pete Mullins, the Rev Arliss Slack and the Rev. Bob Thomas officiating.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Anderson, Todd Harris, Mike Ratledge, Ronnie Watson, Nick Webb and Jack Roberts.

In keeping with Arnold's wishes, there will be no visitation.

Rochesta Williams Haslerig
Died: 12-31-2003

Rochesta Williams Haslerig, 79, formerly of Etowah, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in a Hospice facility in Atlanta, Ga.

She was a devoted member of Harwell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Etowah, where she served on the deaconess board and in the choir. She was employed for many years at Hamilton County Nursing Home in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Leah Williams; her husband, Melvin Haslerig; three sisters, Lovenia Stabler, Pauline Brennon and Macy Corbert; and one brother, Frank Williams.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, George L. and Selemma Haslerig of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Broderick Jackson and wife, Kesia, and Kelvin Haslerig, all of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Catherine Williams of Etowah; a devoted nephew, Bennie Stabler Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a special cousin, Beatrice Parris of Etowah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Harwell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Etowah with the Rev. Angela Billingsley officiating. Burial will follow in New Zion Cemetery in Etowah.

The family will receive friends for one hour before the service at the church. Visitation by friends will begin at noon Saturday at M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home.

Grace Virginia Tallent Kincaid

Grace Virginia Tallent Kincaid, 89, of Etowah, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 1, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital.

A daughter of the late Pinkney Joshua and Mary Hayes Tallent, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as refreshment director of Bible School and food coordinator. She was Mother of the Year for McMinn County in 1983 and was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Wilson Kincaid; three children, A.J. Kincaid, Paula Sue Kincaid and Donald James Kincaid; three grandchildren, Douglas Ray Kincaid, Rodney Keith Kincaid and Virginia Lynn Bledsoe; two great-grandsons, Travis Ray Kincaid and Charlie Ervin; one brother, Andrew “Buddy” Tallent; and six sisters, Hassie Tallent Dalton, Leonard Tallent Graves, Martha Tallent Graves, Bessie Tallent Walker, Pearl Tallent Breeden and Lillie Tallent Mullinax.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Norman Ray Kincaid and fiance, Jamesena Rickman, both of Athens, Joe Ben and Faye Kincaid of Etowah, and Stephen Wayne and Sarah Kincaid of Benton; one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and J.C. Bledsoe of Etowah; 14 grandchildren and spouses, Jackie and Patti Kincaid, Michael Jay Bledsoe, Rita Katherine Bledsoe, Lisa Ann and Greg Rickman, Jeffrey and Tammy Kincaid, Joey and Becky Kincaid, Kim Kincaid, Leslie Geren, Anthony Wayne Kincaid, V.J. Ervin, Terri Kincaid, John Kincaid, Laura Burchfield and Amy Cross; 20 great-grandchildren, Jodie, Lindsey, Lacey, Eric and Talia Kincaid, Gerri Le, Jessica and Gena Bledsoe, Logan and Kailee Rickman, Christopher, Blake, Emily, Myles and Dawson Kincaid, Haze Geren, Lindsey, Jessica and Nate Cross and Abbi Ervin; one great-great-grandson, James Logan Bell; one brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Cora Belle Tallent; and a special mention, Terri and Andy Kincaid.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev, Jimmy McElhaney and the Rev. James Atkins officiating. The service will conclude with the Celebration of Life video. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Sunday and proceed to Etowah Cemetery for the 2 p.m. burial, with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Ricky Leon Knox, 44, of Athens, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a member of Union McMinn Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Robin Henry Knox of Athens; his parents, Samuel and Deloris Moses Knox of Niota; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rodney and Avis Knox and Randy and Carol Knox, all of Niota; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Deborah and William Mincey and Tammy and Johnny Webb, all of Niota, and Janet Baker and special friend, Melissa McNeely, both of Athens; a special sister-in-law, Juanita Henry Calhoun of Athens; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chucky and Margaret Henry of Athens; five nephews, Donnie, Nicholas, Steven, Chris and Matthew; four nieces, Bridget, Candie, Samantha and April; many other nieces and nephews on his wife’s side; several aunts and uncles; a special nephew, William Darst II; a special uncle, Jesse Moses; and two special nieces, Jessica and Brittany Baker.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Henry officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Niota Cemetery.

William Jerome "Buddy" Miller II
Died: 12-31-2003

William Jerome “Buddy” Miller II, 92, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in the Hospice Center of Bethesda Memorial Hospital.

A native of Bradley County, he was president of his senior class and captain of the football team when he graduated from Bradley County High School in 1929. He went on to further his education at Milligan College on a football scholarship. After school, he worked as a bookkeeper at the Dixie Foundry in Cleveland and, later, owned and operated a mechanic shop and motel.

In 1941, he was married to his lifelong wife, Onie Rymer, and, in 1946, they moved to Miami, Fla., and then to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 1948, where he was a company office manager. During 1964, they opened Miller Moving and Storage in Delray Beach, Fla.

He retired in the 1980’s and has been an Alzheimer resident of Avalon Assisted Living for the past 8 years. He is a son of the late William Jerome and Hettie Igou Miller and was also preceded in death by all seven of his brothers and sisters, Marie Wrinkle, Frank Miller, Sue L. Businger, Margarite Trewitt, Lawrence Miller, Lucille Miller and Hugh Etta Emig.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Onie Rymer Miller; two daughters, Janice Ross of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Nancy Powell of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Will Miller of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Fred Miller of Bufford, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Dave Ross, John Ross, Jennifer Ross Kendall, Taryn Miller, Laurie Miller, Jonathan Miller and Charles Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Flint Springs Cemetery.

William C. Williams Jr., 78, of Decatur, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Cleveland.

He was a member of Decatur United Methodist Church and the Meigs County Lions Club and was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, after 44 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy, and was preceded in death by his parents, Eugenia Steele and William C. Williams Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Norcross Williams of Decatur; two sons, Clifford and Chris Williams, both of Decatur; one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Ernie L. Smith of Shreveport, La.; one grandson Will Smith of Shreveport, La.; one sister, Anne N. Rowand of Richmond, Va.; and two nephews, Richard Nuckols of Richmond, Va., and Dr. William A. Nuckols of Abingdon, Va.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Decatur United Methodist Church with the Rev. Archer Coppedge officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.

Robert "Bob" E. Boring
Died: 01-01-2004

Robert “Bob” E. Boring, 73, of Athens, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in an Ocala, Fla., hospital.

A native of Polk County, he had lived several years in Accokee, Md., before making his home in Athens for the past 31 years. He was a son of the late Birch Boring and Lela J. Boring Thomas, and served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which later became the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of North Etowah Baptist Church, and will always be remembered by those who loved and knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Gladys Harmon Boring of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Edward and Joyce Boring of Etowah; one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Rich Ellis of Maryville; four grandchildren, Stephanie J. Boring Pecor and husband, Keith, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Pvt. 1st Class Brian Edward Boring of Etowah, who is stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga., Michael Lawrence Boring of Etowah, and Robbie Ellis of Maryville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leland A. and Barbara Thomas, and Harry J. and Martha Thomas, all of Cleveland; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye and Elgin Durham of Tignall, Ga., Guinn and Joe Adams of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dr. Gerald Atkins and the Rev. Ted Davis officiating, and eulogy by the Rev. Arliss Slack. The service will conclude with the Celebration of Life video.

Family and friends will assemble at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and proceed to McMinn Memory Gardens for the 3 p.m. burial with complete military honors.

Pearl Hamilton Bozeman
Died: 01-03-2004

Pearl Hamilton Bozeman, 89, of Mascot and formerly of Englewood, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Medical Center.

She was a 40-year member of the First Baptist Church of Englewood, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was retired from Athens Manufacturing Company and worked at the Englewood Senior Citizen Center. She was a volunteer at Athens Regional Medical Center and was preceded in death by her parents, T.L. and Dora Hamilton Sr.; 13 brothers and sisters, Trula, Homer, Beulah, Brady, Rosalee, Robert, Reba, Ruth, Odra, Johnnie, Georgia, Nell and T.L.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Joann and Bob Davis of Mascot, and Pam Pilote of Murfreesboro; five grandsons, Dwayne and Kenny Davis, both of Mascot, and Jamie, Jason and Alex Pilote, all of Murfreesboro; and two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Caleb Davis.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Roseberry Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Loy and the Rev. Robert Hamilton officiating. Grandsons and Keith Hamilton will serve as pallbearers.

Sheila Dean Brewer, 63, of Maryville, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and good friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Reba Powers; one brother, Steve Powers; and one grandson, Chris Helton.

Survivors include her husband, Sonny Brewer; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Peggy Helton, Mike and Dot Helton and Scott and Vickie Helton, all of Maryville; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Joyce Powers of Athens; two grandchildren, Traci and Hunter Helton; two great-grandchildren, Kailey Helton-Dunn and Storm Helton; and special friend, Marilyn Gibbs of Athens.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Chapel with the Rev. Greg McCosh and the Rev. Kenneth Holder officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Grandview Cemetery.

Izzie Belle Casteel, 97, of Cartersville, Ga., and formerly of Englewood, died Friday night, Jan. 2, 2004, at Maple Ridge Health Care Center in Cartersville, Ga.

A daughter of the late Isaac and Anna Isbill and a native of Monroe County, she had lived in McMinn County for most of her life. She was a member of Englewood Church of Christ, and was preceded in death by her husband, Hayse Casteel; three brothers, Emerson Isbill, Wafe Cardin and Bill Isbill; and two sisters, Jenny Isbill and Lillie Isbill.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Lois Casteel of Etowah, and Dwane and Betty Casteel of Charles Town, W.Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Jerry Harris of Rydal, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Dean, Carter, Mike and Doug Casteel, Myra Casteel, Michelle Martin and Charles Harris; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Sarah Bridges; two great-nieces, Sherre and Susan Bridges; and one great-nephew, Bobby Bridges.

John Thompson Gamble
Died: 01-02-2004
John Thompson Gamble, 82, of Athens, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alcoa and longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late John Lowery and Mable Thompson Gamble, and was a member of Athens Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired from Bowater Southern and was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lou Perkinson Gamble; one son, Ronnie Partain; four sisters, Reba Ghorley, Carrie Quentin, Mary Best and Margaret Gamble; and one brother, Mose Gamble.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Ann Partain of Daphne, Ala., and Bill and Shirley Partain of Cartersville, Ga.; one sister, Jannette Torbett of Athens; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Delois Gamble of Athens; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, W.L. and Janet Perkinson of Athens, and Vernal Mae Peck of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Ogle Wattenbarger officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Lula Sue Hampton

Died: 01-02-2004

Lula Sue Hampton, 94 years young, returned to her Heavenly Father on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, while at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga following a lingering illness.

A daughter of the late Luther and Respia Ella Ervin Stiles, she was born on Nov. 14, 1909, in Englewood, and graduated from Etowah High School. She was the great-granddaughter of the late Rev. Benjamin Cass, who donated the land for the church and cemetery for the historic Prospect Methodist Church, which is McMinn County’s oldest church. She attended Prospect Methodist Church as a child, and also attended Wesley’s Chapel Methodist Church, and was a member of the Englewood United Methodist Church.

She was an avid gardener, cook, seamstress and baseball enthusiast, and was a long-time member of the McMinn County Republican Women’s Club. She was a full-time wife, mother and homemaker, and she assisted her late husband, Homer Hampton, in running the family farm, hardware store and construction business. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Eugene and Douglas Stiles.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Curtis and Dorothy Middleton Hampton of Turtletown, Murl and Brenda Joyce Newman Hampton of Etowah, Brenda Hampton Browning and James D. Ledford of Chattanooga, and Linda Hampton and Donald W. Higdon of Englewood; her grandchildren, Roger Hampton, Chris Hampton Dockery, Debbie Gaddis Hampton, Kim Hampton Earley, Matthew Hampton, Shannon Hampton Hicks and Holly Hampton Chandler; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Eileen Carver, Bennie Wilbanks, Jeanette Miller, Louise Green, Sue Stiles, and Don and Grace Cook.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Englewood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Bird Wright and Dr. Maxine O. Gernert officiating and eulogy by John Mike Nichols. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens and will conclude with a White Dove Liberation Ceremony.

Rosell “Cricket” Norman Lewis, 72, of Decatur, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004.

A daughter of the late Tom and Maggie Norman of Birchwood, she was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Norman Wilson; one brother, William Jefferson Norman; and one son, Rudolph Lewis Jr. She attended Decatur Church of God for the past several years and, in earlier years, attended Cottonport Road Church of God.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Rudolph “Bubby” Lewis of Decatur; four daughters, Juanita Ownby of Philadelphia, Mary Ann Haskins of Marietta, Ga., Rose Burkhart of Seymour, and Amanda Pritchett of Decatur; one son, Garry Lewis of Nashville; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Minnie B. Shepard Maner, 87, of Athens and formerly of Rockingham, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Ashley Manor Assisted Living Center in Sweetwater.

A native of Rockingham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Green S. and Winnie Freeman Shepard and was preceded in death by her husband, Thaddeus L. Maner.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Lu Shep and Ralph Baldwin Jr., of Athens; two grandsons, Adam and Neal Baldwin, both of Athens; and two sisters, Elizabeth Diggs of Hendersonville, N.C., and Georgia Fuller of Tucson, Ariz.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Richmond Memorial Park Mausoleum in Rockingham, N.C., with the Rev. John Stone, of Southern Pines, N.C., officiating.

Olen B. Brock Sr., 85, of Acworth, Ga., and formerly of Etowah, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2004, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga.

A son of the late Joseph Daniel Sr., and Viola Barker Brock, he was a native of Etowah and had resided in Marietta, Ga., since 1955. He was retired from the Georgia National Guard with the rank of chief master sergeant and was veteran of Korea, Vietnam and the Bay of Pigs. He was a personal aide, co-pilot and crew chief to the commander of the 14th Air Force and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Acworth, Ga. He was preceded in death by one brother, J.D. Brock; and a half-sister, Barbara Brock.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Leonard Brock of Acworth, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Olen B. Jr., and Patsy Brock of Marietta, Ga., and David L. and Bobbie Brock of Tellico Plains; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolen Ann and Frank Caggiano of Rydal, Ga.; six grandchildren, Patricia Anne Brock, Holly Justice, Tiffany Ford, Tammy Crawley, James Fisk Jr., and Emily Berryman; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Kenneth Davidson of Athens.

A daughter of the late Edgar and Dorcas Harris Stiles, she was a native of Monroe County and had been a resident of McMinn County for the past 83 years. She was of the Christian faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert H. Cochran; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Stella “Peg” Rogers Amsler, 92, of Athens, and a longtime resident of Detroit and Clinton Township, Mich., died Wednesday night, Jan. 7, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Luther P. and Rena Benton Rogers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred H. Amsler in November 1979; one granddaughter, Lizabeth Wojtyniak; six sisters, Faye Rogers, Virgie Jones, Iva Hall, Deemie Holland, Lela Gardner and Meda Shell; and six brothers, Newell Rogers, Walter Rogers, David Rogers, Floyd Rogers, P.J. Rogers and Roy Rogers. She was a charter member of Idlewild Baptist Church and was a member of Lakeshore OES No. 520 in Grosse Point, Mich. She was one of the first two graduates of Idlewild School and also served as a substitute teacher. She was associated with, and retired from, McKesson and Robbins Company after many years.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joy and James Jones of Clinton Township, Mich., and Athens; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Robin and Gary Alchin of Firestone, Colo.; one grandson, Timothy A. Wojtyniak of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two great-granddaughters, Claire Elise Alchin and Gwynne Celeste Alchin, both of Firestone, Colo.; and three sisters, Veda Pelfrey and Ann Moore, both of Hixson, and Nelle McKeehan of Athens.

He retired from Athens Furniture after 20 years of service, and was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Mary Sue Hamby Robinson on Dec. 8, 2003; one son, Edward Robinson; one daughter, Helen Robinson; two brothers, James and Luther Robinson; and one sister, Ruth Robinson.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Niota and was a member of Springbrook Golf and Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was a graduate of Cleveland State Community College and was associated with Athens Products, as a test equipment engineer, for many years until his retirement.

A daughter of the late James Roger and Dessie Matthews McNutt, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. She and her husband owned and operated Curly’s Restaurant and Bait Shop in Meigs County for many years and, after moving back to Athens, she operated Curly’s Fishing Tackle Shop until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of North Athens Baptist Church and attended Fisher Street First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Owens on March 11, 1997; and three brothers, Grover, Bill and James McNutt.

Survivors include one sister, Shelby McNutt Davis of Athens; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ivan and Joyce McNutt of Athens, and Kenneth and Helen McNutt of Farragut; and several nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Etowah, where she was a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, she was a member of the choir there and worked on the kitchen committee. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and worked for more than 30 years as a cook/dietitian at Etowah Health Care. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Louise Boyd; one son, David Moss; and four brothers, George Boyd Jr., and Kenneth, Delton and James Boyd.

A native of Cornelia, Ga., she was a daughter of the late William Looney. She was a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church and was a 1973 graduate of Habersham Central High School and a graduate of Truett-McConnell College.

A son of the late Francis Marion and Mary Belle White Watson, he was a native of Polk County and had resided in McMinn County most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, J.E. Watson, Millard Watson, and his twin, Waylon Watson; and one sister, Irene Collins.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Barclay Watson of Etowah; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Joyce Watson of Riceville, and David and Julie Watson of Huntsville, Ala.; one daughter and son-in-law, Shea and Phil Johnson of Atmore, Ala.; one brother, Hugh L. Jewell Clark Shelton, 90, a resident of Athens for 27 years, and a former resident of Fayetteville, Jackson, Franklin, Ky., and Huntsville, Ala., died Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, 2004, at NHC of Athens.

A native of Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late LeRoy Preston and Maggie Lee Nerren Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Shelton on June 6, 1979; one sister, Sally Mae Johnson; and three brothers, Buford Clark, Johnnie B. Clark and James Lawrence Clark. She was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Grace Wilkins Circle.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Jim Pitt of Athens, Joyce and Don Self of Ooltewah, and Betty Joan and Robert Moore of Wallingford, Pa.; two granddaughters and one spouse, Kristen Moore, and Kim and Jimmy Womac; four grandsons and spouses, Richard and Tami Self, Steve and Kelly Self, Jeff and Frankie Pitt and Andrew and Julie Moore; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Florence Erwin of Fayetteville.

She was a member of the Morganton, Ga., Eastern Star Chapter 394 and was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, Ga. She was retired from Eureka Garment Company and was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Elrod; and two brothers, J.C. and Virgil Carpenter.

A daughter of the late Zeph and Odetta Moore Sloop, she was a native of Etowah and a former resident of Gulf Stream, Fla. She had been a resident of Maggie Valley for 30 years and was preceded in death by her husband, John “Red” Watson; one brother, Richard Wayne Sloop; and two sisters, Dorothy Sloop and Edna Evans.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Nancy Watson of Wellington, Fla.; and two grandchildren, James Patrick Watson and Debra Jeanne Watson.

Eddie Jackson Stansell, 71, of Athens, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15, 2004, at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Tempie Jackson and Mamie Carroll Stansell, and was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Agnes Casteel Moore. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher, after 20 years teaching in the McMinn County School System, the Athens City Schools and the Etowah City Schools. He was a partner in Superior Sporting Goods and United Sports Associates.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Moore Stansell of Athens; one daughter, Monica Leigh Stansell of Athens; two sons, Eric Jackson Stansell of Nashville, and Marcus Edward Stansell of Athens; one grandson, Bradley Jacob Stansell of Athens; one brother and sister-in-law, Winston and Kathlyn Stansell of Athens; and his father-in-law and wife, Wayne and Myrtle Moore of Calhoun.

John Cochran Wear, 91, of Dalton, Ga., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at his residence.

Born Nov. 26, 1921, in Murray County, Ga., he lived most of his life in Whitfield County, Ga. A son of the late John Harrison and Winnie Cochran Wear, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jessie Cooper Wear, on Nov. 26, 1994; three brothers; and two sisters.

He was associated with Dalton Rock Products and Boring and Boring, Inc., for 43 years. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Dalton, Ga., where he served as a Sunday school secretary for 38 years. At the recommendation of the Dalton Lions Club, he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services and a Life Membership Award in recognition of outstanding services as a Lion. The Board of Directors of the Farm awarded him honorary membership in recognition of his contribution to the community and to the game of golf. For 60 years, he was a member of the Dalton Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Sharon Wear of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Lydel Hunt of Rome, Ga., and Virginia and Ray LaRue of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcella Wear and Gilbert Miller of Ringgold, Ga., and Wilodyn Wear and Robert Mefford of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He and his late wife owned and operated C&F Grocery in North Athens for more than 35 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Frankie Arnwine Mason on Nov. 9, 2002; two daughters, Carolyn McElhaney on Jan. 15, 2003, and Emma Wattenbarger on June 17, 2003; four brothers, Enos, J.B., Earl and Buster Mason; two sisters, Kate Ellis and Elsie Anderson; and one granddaughter, Tina McElhaney Davis.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and E.M. Armstrong of Etowah; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Roy and Lodema Mason of Tellico Plains, Virgil and Emma Mason of Niota, and Jack and Brenda Mason, J.C. He was a lifetime farmer and previously owned and operated Athens Case Tractor Store. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathern Rodgers Cate in 1997; and two brothers, Johnny and Howard Cate.

A daughter of the late Julius and Eva Mae Fox Stiles, she was a native of Blue Ridge, Ga., and had resided in McMinn County for the past 85 years. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was a fabulous candy maker, painter of china and a master at needlepoint. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.F. "Dick" Ownbey, two brothers, Rastus and Henry Stiles; and one sister, Mary Helen Stiles.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard P. and Juanita Ownbey of Nashville; two grandsons, Dr. Richard Miles Ownbey of New Haven, Conn., and John Phillip Ownbey of Alameda, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Meghan, Jan and Danielle Ownbey.

Wakeley, on Jan. 29, 2003.

Wayne Buckner, 69, of Brooklyn, Mich., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Foote Memorial Hospital after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

Born Sept. 14, 1934, in Decatur, he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Decatur, the Brooklyn Masonic Lodge No. 169, the Scottish Rite Shriners in Detroit and the Irish Hills Rod and Gun Club. He graduated from Adrian High School in Adrian, Mich., in 1954 and served our country in the U.S. Navy. He worked for A&P-Farmer Jack in Belleville, Mich., for 45 years until his retirement in 1997 and was preceded in death by his father, Don Buckner.

He attended Tennessee Wesleyan College, and was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Fred Hutsell; three sisters, Winnie Blevins, Ruby Roderick and Idy Roderick; and an infant daughter, Carolyn Hutsell.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Beulah Weir Hutsell of Riceville; two sons and daughters-in-law, C.L. and Kim Hutsell and Mike and Amy Hutsell, all of Riceville; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Robert Jenkins of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Cindy Hutsell, Julie Wallis and Sean Hutsell; and two great-grandchildren, Carrie Burson and Colton Wallis.

Died: 01-21-2004

For 108 years, Etowah and McMinn County were blessed to have Sister Etta Jackson as a mother, grandmother, dedicated church member, friend and neighbor. On Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2004, God saw fit to call her home to her place in Heaven.

She was born on June 21, 1895, thus being blessed to have lived to touch the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, while still in good health. She was a daughter of the late Tom and Hulda Carlock and was married to the late Zeak Jackson for 72 years. She is also preceded in death by one brother, James Carlock; four sisters, Maudie Inman, Rena Carlock, Gracie Moss and Craddie McAllister; one son, Ed Mayfield; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. She was the Mother of the Church at Mount Olive AME Zion Church of Etowah and attended faithfully until about one year ago, due to failing health. Her church and family were her joy and she served the church as Sunday School Superintendent, church delegate, deaconess, Willing Workers Club trustee, Life Member Missionary stewardess, Sunday school teacher, Christian Endeavor leader, treasurer of Ministry of Kindness and class leader. Mount Olive’s entire church family went to Sister Etta’s house on the first Sunday morning in June 2003 to have church with her. On her 106th birthday, she received recognition on national television from Willard Scott of the NBC Today Show and also received recognition at the annual Heritage Banquet’s Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Victory Chapter No. 192.

Her family, who will forever cherish her memory, includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Juanita Jackson and Bennie and Rasihelle Jackson, all of Etowah; 20 grandchildren, Loretta Cobb of Riceville, Ed Mayfield Jr. and wife, Jeannie, and Robert Mayfield, all of Cincinnati, Ohio, Charlie Mooney of Warren, Ohio, James Moss of Etowah, Wayne Stovall of Cleveland, Raymond Jackson Jr., Annette Sharp, Vivian Hitchcock and husband, Johnny, Joey Jackson and wife, Trina, Suellen Jackson, Teresa Jackson and Gordon Jackson and wife, Beth, all of Louisville, Ky., Denise Williams and husband, Michael, of Etowah, Dennis Jackson and wife, Kimberly, of Greenville, S.C., Phylis Prigmore and husband, Buster, of Riceville, Etta Smith and husband, R.T., of Niota, Pastor Sandra Ball and husband, Ernest, of Chattanooga, Delores Jackson of Atlanta, Ga., and Benny Jackson Jr. of Etowah; 39 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Almeda Williams; and several other nieces, nephews and a host of other dear cousins, relatives, friends and neighbors.

Frank "Big Daddy" Myers Sr., 85, of Tellico Plains, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, where he received the Normandy Battle Ribbon. He was born in Tellico Plains and lived in Maryville for 41 years, while he worked at Alcoa. He was a partner in Myers Funeral Home and retired in 1983, moving back to his home place in Tellico Plains. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and was formerly a member of First Baptist Church of Alcoa. He was preceded in death by one sister; and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Icie Peals Myers of Tellico Plains; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Jr. and Sharon Myers of Tellico Plains, and David and Margie Myers of Maryville; one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Dwight Broome of Maryville; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Dolly Myers of Etowah; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Wanda McConnell Riddle, 79, left this world peacefully on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, after a long illness.

A daughter of the late Walter and Laura Emma McConnell, she was a native of Etowah. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens and Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga. During World War II, she worked at the atomic site in Oak Ridge and she taught school in Tennessee and Dalton, Ga. for more than 25 years. Her mischievous sense of humor delighted her family, friends and hundreds of school children. After her retirement, she went home to Etowah, where she lived in the house she was born in for as long as her health allowed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Turner Riddle; and one brother, Bob McConnell.

Survivors include one son, Steve Riddle; two daughters, Mary Laura Riddle and Jan Cooper; and one brother, Rudy McConnell.

Elbert Rankin Lowe, 92, of Englewood, died Friday morning, Jan. 23, 2004, at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home.

A son of the late Bill and Vinnie Lowe, he was born Dec. 4, 1911 in Wayne County, Ky. and had lived in Englewood and Etowah for 40 years. He was of the Church of God faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Mandy Lowe; one daughter, Jean Sullivan; two sons, George and Jack Lowe; and two grandsons, Tommy Casteel and Rusty Lowe.

Survivors include five sons and three daughters-in-law, Ray Lowe of Kentucky, Bob and Faye Lowe, Johnny and Dianne Lowe and Richard Lowe, all of Englewood, and Jerry K. and Bernice Lowe of Etowah; four daughters and one son-in-law, Polly McBath and Carol Lowe, both of Etowah, Alta Lowe of Englewood, and Dovie and Norris Kilgore of Chatsworth, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Lowe of Etowah; two sisters, Bessie Hale of Jamestown, and Pauline Coomer of Kentucky; 30 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Lane officiating. Burial was 10 a.m. Monday in the Mars Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Adam Kilgore, Allen Kilgore, Jason Pitt, James Lowe, Heath Brady, Thomas Lowe, Travis Williams and Donald Lowe.

Peggy Burnett Ford, 58, of Hixson, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of Dayton First United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her father, Dean Burnett.

Survivors include her husband, James Ford Jr. of Hixson; her mother, Ann Burnett of Dayton; one son, James Ford III of Athens; one daughter, Stephanie Linkous of Athens; one sister, Bertie Branam of Dayton; three brothers, Wayne Burnett of Red Bank, Bill Burnett of Dayton, and J.C. Burnett of Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of LaFollette, she was a daughter of the late Seth Edgar and Tina Bowman Welch. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Huddleston on Jan. 5, 1993; one sister, Reva Lamb; and three brothers, Bob, Bill and Philip Welch. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Bernard officiating. Burial followed in McMinn Memory Gardens with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Dewitt McElroy; three sisters, Rossie Yarber Key, Louise Butner and Nancy Yarber Frady; and three brothers, Robert, Johnny and Pete Yarber.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Margaret Patterson and fiance, Bill Murray, both of Sweetwater, and Betty and Stanley Torbett of Athens; one son, David McElroy of Sweetwater; four grandchildren, Travis S. She was a member of North Etowah Baptist Church and a former member of Greenback Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Hipps; her parents, Bill and Ellen Shadden; one daughter, Margaret Longmire; one son, John "Bud" Hipps; an infant daughter, Lois; one great-grandson, Isaac Hipps; and 10 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Thomson of Etowah; two sons, James Hipps of Etowah, and Earl Hipps of Maryville; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; her dear friend, Violet Burrell; and many nieces and nephews.

William A. Buckley, 92, of Bridgeport, Conn., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Connecticut.

Born Dec. 19, 1911, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was attached to the 100th Division and fought during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service. He retired from the Bridgeport Brass Company and was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Ashlynn Michelle Buckley.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Buckley of Bridgeport, Conn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Attorney William Buckley and Linda Gail Buckley of Athens; four grandchildren, William A. Buckley III, Michael Patrick Buckley, Rachel Erin Buckley and Taryn Elizabeth Buckley; and one daughter, Kyle Buckley of Massachusetts.

Funeral services with military honors were held Monday in Connecticut.

Mary Belle Mayfield Bible, 88, of Maryville, lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her home in the Lanier community of Blount County.

Born Aug. 18, 1915 in McMinn County, she was the first daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel Wilson Mayfield. She was a member of Four Mile Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Herbert, Sammy, William and Ray Mayfield; and one sister, Dorothy Bivens. "Mama MayBelle" will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved this very special and remarkable woman.

Survivors include three sisters, Sue Harris of Etowah, Dean Pickens of Athens, and Barbara Davis of Englewood; her loving husband of 61 years, Harley Bible of Maryville; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Vearl and Carol Bible and Ronnie Bible, all of Maryville, Lennie and Donna Bible of Louisville, Ky., and Ondis and Irene Bible of Lebanon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Barry Freshour of Knoxville, and Kay and Larry Pender of Alcoa; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from the Carpenter’s Union No. 74 in Chattanooga. He was a member of North Etowah Baptist Church and a member of the Etowah Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary L. Arms; two brothers, Kenneth Aiken and Clement Aiken; and one sister, Eliece A. Morelock.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian W. Aiken of Etowah; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Roger Farley of Etowah; five grandchildren, Heather and Lori Farley, both of Etowah, Kaela and Erica Arms, and Russell Arms and wife, Jennifer, all of Anderson, S.C.; one great-granddaughter, Alexus L. She was a native of Polk County and was a resident of Etowah for more than 50 years, and was a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Rena Taylor Pannell. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Etowah, where she was very active, and she was a retired secretary from Bowater Southern Paper Corporation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gideon Cochran Jr.; one brother, Joseph Pannell; and one sister, Mary Ball.
