Roma Jean Seals
Died: 07-04-2004

Roma Jean Seals, 66, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 4, 2004.

Her family was around her in her home. Her homecoming was prompted by health complications from previous heart failure.

A native of Crossett, Ark., and a 12-year resident of Fernandina Beach, Fla., she was very active in church and founded a ministry for federal housing called the I Believe Ministry. She founded the ministry in October 1997 and, until her health started failing, she was faithful in holding ministry programs for children and adults. She was licensed in 2000 as a minister of the Church of Foursquare Gospel and used her God-given talents to reach children and adults. I Believe Ministries programs included ministry for adults that ensured Thanksgiving turkeys for 50-55 homes listed by the Federal Housing Authority. Likewise, at Christmas time, she made sure presents were available for the children in these homes. Throughout the years, her ministry was blessed by so many people and businesses in and around Fernandina Beach that they are too numerous to list. Every item, regardless of what it was, was given to the people she ministered to free of charge. Another facet of this ministry was "Birthday Saturday," held on the last Saturday of the month. Every child who had birthdays during that month enjoyed a celebration, including a gift and a cake. Every Saturday was special to I Believe Ministries, as Roma shared Bible stories, prizes and food with all the children present each and every Saturday.

She also impacted Savannah, Ga., her home from 1987-1991, in a huge way, as she utilized her talent by getting help from the U.S. Army Rangers stationed at Ft. Stewart, Ga., to conduct an organized search for a missing boy from Savannah. Through a petition of 500,000 names and calling on national television programs to display his picture, she got national attention on the case. The missing boy’s picture was displayed on the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and on "America’s Most Wanted." She was also a victim advocate in the district attorney’s office of Chatham County. United Way and several local television stations gave her various accommodations for her hard work in the programs she was involved in during her stay in Savannah, Ga.

She was active in a lot of areas before her heart attack in 1995 in Fernandina Beach. She was a retired nurse, as well as the northeast Florida coordinator for Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID). Prior to her heart attack, she also worked for the Guardian Adlitem program in Nassau County. She was a member of River of Praise Church of God in Yulee, Fla., and she enjoyed such activities as swimming, fishing, bowling (she was a former instructor) and any type of outside yard work. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Dot Streety; one son, Bret Allen Lawson; and one daughter, Misty Michelle Seals.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Robert Hence Seals; two children, Markel Shan Lawson of Florence, S.C., and Kimberly Jean Morris of Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Cynthia H. Lawson of Florence, S.C.; one brother, John R. Streety of Seminole, Ala.; one sister, Sherida A. Maciejewski of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Brittany Myers of Los Angeles, Calif., Cherisse Lawson of Florence, S.C., Ashlee Morris of Los Angeles, Calif., Jake Morris of Los Angeles, Calif., Ashley Cooper of Florence, S.C., and James Shelton Cooper Jr. of Florence, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Serena Christina of Los Angeles, Calif., and Katlin Cooper and Madison Cooper, both of Florence, S.C.

The family received friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
