Carl E. Couch, 69, of Spring City, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Memorial North Park Hospital in Chattanooga.

A lifelong resident of Meigs and Rhea counties, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Lydia Boles Couch. He was a lifelong farmer and was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Robbins Couch; three brothers, Robert "Bob," Marvin and Gordon Couch; and two sisters, Louetta and Aileen Ferguson.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Lynn Daniels of Spring City; three sons, Randy Couch of Decatur, and George and Roger Couch, both of Spring City; one sister, Dorothy Barnes of Decatur; two brothers, Gene Couch of Evensville, and James Couch of Decatur; a special friend, Daniel White of Spring City; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethsadia Baptist Church Cemetery in Decatur.

George Willie Moses, 80, of Englewood, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at his home.

He attended Goodsprings Holiness House of Prayer and was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Lee Worthy Moses, on April 19, 2004; one son, Herbert Moses; two granddaughters, Melinda Kaye Martin and Melissa Ann Freeman; two sisters, Francis Rayburn and Eva Lou Huggins; one brother, James Moses; and one son-in-law, Wayne Martin.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Alene Martin of Madisonville, and Mamie and Kenneth Freeman of Sweetwater; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ore Lee and Darlene Moses of Madisonville, and Austin and Nancy Moses of Knoxville; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Mae Duckett and Ruby Lee Martin, both of Englewood; three brothers, Thomas Moses and Charles Eugene Moses, both of Madisonville, and Grady Moses of Englewood; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Biereley-Hale Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Harris and the Rev. Carl Croft officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Prospect Cemetery.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a daughter of the late Henry Woodrow and Carolyn Smith Taylor. She was preceded in death by one infant son, Robert Milner Rucker.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, James "Ed" Chrisman; one son, Tim Rucker of Athens; four stepchildren; one sister, Linda Newman of Etowah; one granddaughter, Lacey McKeehan; one great-grandson, Hunter McKeehan; two nieces, Karen Burris Shepard of Etowah, and Julie Phillips of Niota; one great-niece, Chelsea Sneed of Niota; and numerous other extended family members.

Charles Kenneth "Doug" Gallaher, 86, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.

He was an active member of Bearden United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Forum Sunday School Class. He was retired from the Power Construction Department of TVA, with more than 30 years of service, and was a member of the 1918 Club. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles Kenneth "Kenny" Gallaher Jr.; his parents, Frank Mason and Lula Fike Gallaher; five brothers, David "Sharkey" Gallaher, James "Pete" Gallaher, Raymond Gallaher, Donald Gallaher and Robert Gallaher; and two sisters, Mary Abby McCluskey and Bertie Olive Wade.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Charline Kinzalow Gallaher of Knoxville; one daughter, Pamela Gallaher of Knoxville; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Cathy Gallaher of Knoxville; one granddaughter, Taylor Gallaher of Knoxville; one sister, Mildred Campbell of Decatur; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Vivian Gallaher of Rockwood; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gallaher of Georgia, Marie Gallaher and Dot Gallaher, both of Decatur, and Martha Steele of Chattanooga; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Juanita and John Hahn of Knoxville, and Betty and Burnie Medley of Chattanooga; two brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law, Roy McCluskey of Dublin, Ga., and Charles and Jan Kinzalow of Oxford, Ga.; a special cousin, Pete Lillard of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Forum Sunday School Class and retired co-workers of TVA Power Construction.

A native of Bellingham, Wash., she lived in McMinn County for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Englewood Christian Church and had been employed by the McMinn County Department of Education as a school bus driver for more than 30 years. She was a daughter of the late Harold L. and Bea Lewtas Glassburn, and was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Nichols; one daughter, Gena Nichols Moses; and one sister, LaVurn Glassburn.

Survivors include two sons, Matt Nichols of Athens, and Mike Nichols of Englewood; one sister, Dottie McWilliams of Red Bluff, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lindsey Moses, Corey Nichols and Megan Nichols; several aunts and uncles; and two special friends, Roy and Ernestine Runion of Englewood.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Ronald Blevins and the Rev. Doyle Prince officiating, and concluding with a white dove release

Rev. Norvell D. Peek

Died: 06-01-2004

Rev. Norvell D. Peek, 79, of Afton, died suddenly Tuesday evening, June 1, 2004, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

He was in the ministry for 53 years and was well known for his vast knowledge and teaching of the Book of Revelations. He had pastored several churches including New Hope Church of God in Murphy, N.C., First Church of God in Etowah, First Church of God in Englewood for 15 years, Horse Creek Church of God in Greene County for 16-1/2 years and First Church of God in Lenoir City for nine years, and was the current pastor of Dixon’s Chapel First Church of God in Limestone. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, always willing to go the extra mile, and was loved and respected by many throughout the eastern United States for his knowledge of the Bible and preaching of God’s word. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bartley R. and Cora Peek; one brother, Felix Peek; and an infant sister.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, MaeBelle Dockery Peek; two daughters and one son-in-law, Trish and Carl Garber of Greeneville, and Sharon Wills of Greene County; two sons, David Peek of Chuckey, and Tim Peek of Greeneville; four grandchildren, Nathan Peek of Johnson City, Justin Wills of Hendersonville, and Amber and Dilland Peek, both of Greeneville; two step-grandchildren, Carla Todaro of Morristown, and Chad Garber of Jonesborough; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Greene of Murphy, N.C., and Katherine Davis of Santa Clara, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, J.D. and Dora Peek of Murphy, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

John D. "Wimp" Payne, 71, of Benton, died early Thursday morning, June 3, 2004, at his residence.

A native of McMinn County and a resident of Polk County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Roy and Eunice Culpepper Payne. He was a member of Wetmore Baptist Church and was a well-known crane operator. He was preceded in death by two infant daughters; one sister, Joyce Payne; and one brother, Paul L. Payne.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Alice Jenkins Payne of Benton; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Andrew Wilson of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, John K. Payne and Richard Payne, both of Delano; one precious granddaughter, Burgandy Payne of Delano; a special stepdaughter and stepson, Glenda Harper and Randy Harper, both of Benton; one step-grandson, Zack Harper of Benton; one brother, C.R. Payne of Delano; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ella and James Rayburn of Etowah, and Delores Lillard of Benton; one aunt, Mrs. Norman Culpepper of Hixson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. John Tullock officiating and will conclude with the Celebration of Life video. Voyd B. Burger
Died: 05-31-2004

Voyd B. Burger, 76, of Pensacola, Fla., and formerly of Englewood, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Baptist Hospital.

Born Nov. 26, 1927, in Englewood, he was a son of the late Earl and Mary Johnson Burger. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 and retired after 25 years of serving in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and, most recently, the Gulf War. He was proud of being a captain and enjoyed the sea and his career with the Merchant Marines was characterized as "outstanding." He was employed with New York Life and was a 22-year Certified Life Underwriter (CLU). His personality and knowledge brought him to the point that he knew most everyone in Escambia County, Fla., as well as Mobile, Ala. After his career with New York Life, the sea called on him and this time he was to achieve his deep sea master’s license. He then sailed as captain for eight more years, retiring in 1994 for good. He was preceded in death by one sister, Carine McConkey.

Survivors include his lovely wife of 48 years, Betty Jo Dougherty Burger of Pensacola, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Karen Burger of Pensacola, Fla.; one daughter, Anna Church of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Arland Burger and Earl Burger, both of Cleveland; three sisters, Catherine Casteel, Martha Gowin and Josie Burger, all of Englewood; three grandsons, Damon, Seth and Neil; and one granddaughter on the way.

Memorial services were held Thursday at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.

A native of Santa Ana Piños, Zacatecas, Mexico, and a resident of McMinn County for eight years, she was an employee of Sweetwater Valley Farms.

Survivors include her husband, Benito Castellanos Escalera of Athens; one daughter, Jasmin Berenise Castellanos Chavez of Athens; her parents, Antonio Chavez Martinez and Perfeta Martinez Cortez of La Escondida Calle Versel, Mexico; six brothers, Cresencio Chavez Martinez, Fabian Chavez Martinez, Jose Rogelio Chavez Martinez, Javier Chavez Martinez and Jose Guadalupe Chavez Martinez, all of Sweetwater, and Jose Dolores Chavez Martinez of Mexico; and three sisters, Berta Chavez Martinez, Marin Del Jesus Chavez Martinez and Alva Adriaha Chavez Martinez, all of Mexico.

She was a member of the Englewood First Church of God and was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Torbett; one son, William Torbett; one sister, Mattie Sue Wooby; and five brothers, Millard, Wilburn, Marlie, Herman and D.C. Morgan.

He was employed by Pitney Bowes, Inc., and had attended Gregory’s Chapel Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Daniel Best of Sweetwater; one son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Christi Young of Sweetwater; his parents, Verlon and Hula Young of Sweetwater; one sister and brother-in-law, Gale and Jack Williams of Athens; one niece, Lisa White of Athens; several aunts and uncles; and a special friend, Jerry Ann Murphy of Alabama.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late John and Julia Stanton Bohannon. She was a member of Rogers Creek Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Perry.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Willard B. Nelson of Athens; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Betty and Lewin Shore of Athens; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Nelson of Athens, and Jerry and Hazel Nelson of Orange Park, Fla.; one brother, George Franklin Bohannon of Athens; one sister, Fairedell Elrod of Athens; seven step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Dewey Maples, 64, of Seymour, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 2, 2004.

He was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church and was the owner of L&M Printing in Maryville, and was retired from the Naval Reserves, with 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father, W.C. Maples Sr., formerly of Seymour.

Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Virginia "Ginny" Maples; his mother, Wilma Maples; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Gordon Wright and Wendy and Scott Barker; one son, Steven Maples, and his companion, Trisha Brady; five grandchildren, Lee, Anna, Tucker and MaKenzie Wright and Baylee Barker; one sister and brother-in-law, Gleneva and Carroll Helton of Irving, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Conny and Donna Maples of Sulphur, La.; his mother-in-law, Viola Lee; one niece; several nephews; and special friend and business partner, Clarence Kirkland.

A memorial service was 11:30 a.m. Monday at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Naval Marine Corps Reserves of Knoxville and the Volunteer State Honor Guard. The family hosted a celebration of life reception at the Buddy’s Barbecue Banquet Room in Knoxville following the memorial service.

A native of Meigs County, and a lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Callie Arnold Ferguson. A native of Marietta, Ga., and a resident of McMinn County for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Thomas L. and Verdie Russell Keasler. She was a member of East Athens Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Athens Manufacturing Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Moses, on July 26, 1990; one brother, John Keasler; two sisters, Bess Standridge and Dorothy Wilson; and one nephew, Don Keasler.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Kenneth Allen of Athens; one sister, Maude Goins of Riceville; one sister-in-law, Dot Keasler of Athens; one granddaughter and husband, Kenna and Chad Mayeux of Riceville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Highland Baptist Church for more than 60 years and served as deacon for many of those years. He worked at Hickory Manufacturing for more than 45 years, and was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Laney and John Pinkney Turbyfill; one son, McCoy Turbyfill; and two brothers, Roy and Preston Turbyfill.

Maranda Pangle Johnson, 99, of Mobile, Ala., died Monday, June 7, 2004.

Born in McMinn County, she and her late husband, James Lewis Johnson, were longtime residents of Etowah. In 1989, she relocated to Mobile, Ala., to be closer to family members. She was a graduate of Athens High School, the Knoxville Business School and Tennessee Wesleyan College. For many years, she was a public school teacher in Etowah. She had a lifelong involvement with civic and church activities and, for most of her adult life, taught Sunday school and Bible classes in her church. She was multi-talented and was well-known in McMinn County as a gourmet pastry cook. She supplied fancy cakes to many McMinn County restaurants. She also excelled in flower arranging and won many awards for her floral arrangements.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eli and Flora Belle Pangle; and three brothers, Ruel, Ed and Charles.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Herb Irish of Mobile, Ala., and Faye and David Lasky of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in Englewood Cemetery.

Oscar Henry Ervin, 89, of Reliance, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at his home.

He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was the oldest deacon and served as choir director for 60 years. He was a son of the late Patrick and Mary Green Ervin. He was born Dec. 11, 1914, in Bullet Creek, where he raised his family and was a farmer and logger on the family farm. He was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Ervin Norwood; two brothers, Homer and Abner Ervin; and one son-in-law, the Rev. Robert Thompson.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and the Merritt Greer Circle. She had also taught in the children’s departments of the church and was a member of the Quilters, who donated all profits to missions. She was a retired teacher from the Bradley County Schools and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as the Bradley County Retired Teachers. She was a daughter of the late Luther Lee and Nettie Margaret Williams Daugherty, and was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Woodrow Rucker; one brother, Gaylord Daugherty; and one half-brother and half-sister, Tom Carpenter and Bea Stiles.

John A. "J.A." Wilson, 77, of Madisonville, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Company D 796th Military Police Battalion and in the Constabulary. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He loved being outdoors and spending time in the mountains. He was loved by many people who respected his quiet, easy manner and his generosity to those in need. Johnie "Burley" Blanton, 71, of Athens, died Thursday morning, June 10, 2004, at NHC Health Care of Athens.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Jacob and Elsie May Bowers Blanton and was a member of Harvest Time Church. He retired from Vestals after 40 years and was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Steven Ray Godby; and one brother, Zake Blanton.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Rhoda Mae Carmley Blanton of Athens; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra Kelly and Michael Burnette of Athens, Rebecca Jane and Billy Newman of Decatur, and Dawn Elizabeth Cook of Benton; one son and daughter-in-law, William Burl and Jammie Blanton of Dayton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Harris of Athens.

A native of Boyd County, Ky., she lived most of her working life in South Whitley, Ind., and the past 14 years in Polk County. She was a member of Pleasant View Church of God in South Whitley, Ind., and attended Towee Baptist Church in Reliance. She was the treasurer of the Springtown Fire Hall and was very active in the community. She was a daughter of the late Richard and Zella Ratliff and was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Raymond Ratliff; and one infant sister.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Paul E. Coburn; one daughter, Paulette Coburn of Bangkok, Thailand; one son and daughter-in-law, Leonard R. and Cynthia Coburn of Columbia City, Ind.; one sister and brother-in-law, Wilma Ratliff and Glenn Brinker; five brothers, James Ratliff, Donald Ratliff, John Ratliff, Robert Ratliff and George Ratliff; two grandsons, Paul "P.J." Kenneth "Jim" Farrell, 73, of Athens, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at his home after a lengthy illness.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Bruner and Ellen McCulloch Farrell and was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Frazier and Paul Farrell; and two sisters, Mammie Lee Cornett and Inez Morrow. He, along with his wife, owned and operated Farrell’s Carpet Store in Athens for the past 27 years, and he was a former machinist at Athens Hosiery Mill for about 32 years.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Daphne Dennis Farrell of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Glenn Guffey of Athens; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kenneth "Butch" and Linda Farrell and Tracy Alan Farrell, all of Athens; four grandchildren, Shawn Thompson, Michael Thompson, Lance Farrell and Tricia Farrell McMinn; five great-grandchildren, Destiny Thompson, Michael Thompson, Mark Thompson, Shenoa Thompson and Kayla McMinn; one sister and brother-in-law, Nina and Henry Smith of Athens; five sisters-in-law, and three spouses, Vivian and Charles Raburn, Nina Dennis, Mary Alice Hyde, Alma and Frank Hicks and Mildred and Clarence Clifton; several nieces and nephews; one special nephew, Donald Farrell of LaFayette, Ga.; and four very special friends, Ralph and Ada Sue Lingerfelt and Ivan "Cracker" and Joyce McNutt.

Billy Joe Hatcher, 75, of Athens, went to Heaven on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

A native of Chattanooga and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late William Marion and Florence Jones Hatcher and was preceded in death by one daughter, Florence Kathy Moses, on Nov. 29, 1997; and one sister, Martha Dockery. He was a member of Woodward Avenue Church of God and was the owner of Hatcher Machine Shop. He was an avid lover of bluegrass and gospel music and was a bluegrass and gospel fiddle player.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lena "Midge" Lingerfelt Hatcher of Athens; three daughters and four sons-in-law, Lana and Bruce Whisman of Cleveland, and Gail and Preston Moser, Sarah and Larry Webb and Daryl Moses, all of Athens; two grandchildren, J.P. Moser and fiance, T.C. Burkett Daugherty, 82, of Etowah, died early Sunday morning, June 13, 2004, at his residence.

A native of Etowah, he retired with 30 years of service from CSX Railroad. He was a son of the late Walter S. and Dora Everhart Daughtery and was a 32nd degree Mason. He recently received a World War II remembrance award and was preceded in death by two brothers, Raleighn and T.A. Daugherty; one sister, Albirda Greene; and one granddaughter, Angelia Denise Smith. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Belle Daugherty of Etowah; one daughter, Karen Smith of Etowah; one granddaughter, Cindy Dailey; one grandson, Jason Smith; one great-grandson, Connor Dailey; three very close cousins, Carson and Sterling Daugherty and Edna Mae Ammons; and numerous other cousins.

He was a retired dozer operator and was noted as "the little man that loved to sit on his front porch in overalls in his rocking chair, who waved at everybody and enjoyed his tobacco." He was a member of Springtown Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Bertha Morgan Lee; three children, Marcilla Lee Green, Polly Lee Hall and Rufus Lee; three brothers, Lester, Wayne and an infant, Climmer; and one sister, Hazel Wilson.

Henry Bradley Frisbie, 77, a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County in Niota, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 14, 2004, at his residence.

He was a Christian and a member of Union McMinn Baptist Church in Niota. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 to 1947 as a cannoneer and gunner over an anti-tank crew in Germany and Switzerland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mollie Frisbie; his mother-in-law, Claudie Dawson; one great-grandson, Dawson Lairmore; five sisters; and four brothers.

Rev. W.A. Audilea Callihan, 87, of Etowah, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at a local hospital.

Born in Fannin County, Ga., on Jan. 1, 1917, and a former resident of Cleveland, he was one of 12 children born to the late John and Victoria Chastain Callihan, formerly of Bradley County. He was a member of Conasauga Baptist Church and was an ordained Baptist minister for 54 years. He pastored various churches in McMinn, Polk and Bradley counties, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Gladson Callihan; one son, Jerry Callihan; one stepson, Ed Stiles; six brothers, Claude, Roy, Floyd, Carson, Carl and Hobart; and three sisters, Lillie Woody, Edith Johnson and Joyce Dotson.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis E. and Rosie Buchanon Underwood. She was a member of Liberty Hill Church of Christ and her whole life was centered around God and her family. She was a mother and friend to many and was known as "Nanny" to her many nieces and nephews. She will always hold a special place in each of our hearts and she was loved by all and will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruel V. Chris Nolan Roy, 42, of Decatur, went to see the Lord on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his parents’ home in Huntington Beach, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 16 years and loved to fish and work with his animals. He was a member of AMVETS Post No. 90 in Decatur and was preceded in death by one brother, Edmund Roy. Most of all, he loved his family and children, and he will be very missed by everybody.

Survivors include his parents, Eddie and Judy Roy; one brother, Darren and Tina Roy; one son, Chase Roy of Pennsylvania; and one daughter, Hauna Lynn Roy of Decatur.

William Eugene Farmer, 74, of Ten Mile, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Brookewood Nursing Facility in Decatur.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Athens, was a retired employee of TVA and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a medical technician during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post No. 5146 and was a member of the Meigs County Historic Society. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Charlie and Dora Hickman Farmer; two brothers, Robert Norman and George Farmer; and one grandson, Joseph Brent Walden.

She was the wife of William E. Clinger for 39 years and was born in Athens on July 3, 1943. She was a daughter of the late William E. and Marjorie Prince Davis. She had worked as a registered radiology technologist, specializing in MRI site accreditation for four years at the American College of Radiology in Reston, Va. Prior to that, she worked as a specialized technologist for radiology practices in Virginia, Connecticut, Ohio and Florida. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

Survivors include three daughters, Stacey Ann Clinger Rose of York, Pa., Catherine J. Clinger of Washington, D.C., and Jennifer L. Clinger of Arlington, Va.; two grandsons, Ethan M. and Zachary W. Rose, both of York, Pa.; three brothers, J. Edward Davis and W.F. Ted Davis, both of Etowah, and Chester L. Davis of Harrison; and two sisters, Betty Jean Davis Pullin of Brookfield, Ohio, and Eldora Davis Burke of Riceville.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ida Johnson Dalton. She was the oldest living member of East Athens Baptist Church and was active in the homebound ministry there. She retired from Cooke Paper Box Company and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Coffee; two sisters, Lois Patterson and Emma Rue; and two brothers, Carl and Willard Dalton.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Swaggerty of Knoxville; one son and daughter-in-law, Hershel and Betty Sherlin of Athens; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Charles "Buck" Harrison Cockrell Jr.

Charles "Buck" Harrison Cockrell Jr., 61, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, while on the golf course in Venice, Fla.

A graduate of Lenoir City High School, Buck attended the University of Tennessee from 1965-69 and the University of South Carolina from 1972-76. He retired from AT&T as marketing director and general manager of Global Services. He was vice president of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association and many committees, heading the PGI Greenspace. Several proposals have been suggested to honor him, including naming a portion of the new civic center, a channel and a park after him.

Survivors include his wife, Annette; one daughter, Jennifer Thames, and grandson, Michael, both of Cape Coral, Fla.; his father, Charles Cockrell Sr.; and two sisters, Jean Williams of Cleveland, and JoAnn Davidson of Nashville.

Buck’s wishes were to be cremated and that his life be celebrated. An "Irish Wake" was given in his honor on Sunday, June 20, at the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a member of Pond Hill Baptist Church, and had served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from McMinn County High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College, and was a former employee of Citizens National Bank.

Clement B. "Duke" Cosgrove Jr., 84, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in an Etowah nursing home.

Born May 30, 1920 in Canton, Mass., he was of the Catholic faith. He attended Boston College and was a member of the 452nd Bomb Group Association and the 487th Tactical Mission Wing, as Master Sergeant, with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was awarded the EANE Theatre Campaign Ribbon with four Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, two Purple Hearts and other various medals. He was a portrait photographer, an executive analyst and a movie production transportation executive. He was preceded in death by his father, Clement B. Cosgrove Sr.; his mother, Mary Leahy Cosgrove; two brothers, Russel Cosgrove and Robert Cosgrove; and one son, Stephen R. Cosgrove.

Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Eddie Lahage of Stuart, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Martin of Dartmouth, Mass.; one sister-in-law, Betty Cosgrove of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sherrill C. J.C. Berry, 62, of Ten Mile, died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of Baptist Church in Cleveland and was preceded in death by his father, Robert Berry; and two brothers, Bobby and Jimmy Berry.

Survivors include his mother, Lillie Mae Lankford Berry of Ten Mile; his wife, Kathleen Goodman Berry of Ten Mile; two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Jason Green of Ten Mile, and Brenda and Joe Vann of Sweetwater; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Johnny and Janice Berry of Cresent City, Fla., Jessie Berry of Roane County, and Howard and Joan Berry of Dayton; and five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mildred Flowers of Cleveland, Gracie and D.L. Knight of Evensville, Frances and Johnny Goodman of Roane County, Lorine Potter of Dayton, and Edna and J. C. Williams of Spring City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Sonny Ellison officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Goodman, Ricky Clowers, Jimmy Goodman, Jason Green, Randy Emerson and Joe Vann.

Lila Mae Umberger, 72, of Etowah, died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Etowah Health Care Center.

A native of McMinn County and a resident of Etowah for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Bruce E. and Nellie Mae Holt Ritchey. She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Umberger.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, David and Patricia Elliott of Ooltewah, and Ricky Elliott of McDonald; one daughter, Lori Wright of Chattanooga; one brother, Bruce Ritchey of Cleveland; three grandchildren; and two nieces.

The body will be donated to science and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

There will be no formal visitation.

Carlos Hooper, 59, of Athens, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at his residence.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Neppie Lee Daugherty. He attended West End Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his stepfather, Marion Wilcox; and one sister, Vickie Wilcox.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Miller Hooper of Athens; one son, Michael Eugene Hooper of Georgia; one grandson, Michael Blake Hooper; his father, J.L. Hooper of Chattanooga; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Dorothy and T.D. Boatman and Catherine Wilson, all of Athens, Gail and Richard Derrick of Englewood, and Linda and Thomas Howard of Athens; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gary and Margie Wilcox, Bill and Judy Thompson and Walter Wilcox, all of Athens, and Tony and Lisa Wilcox of Niota; one special nephew, Rocky Boatman of Etowah; and three special friends, Jimmy and Connie Goins and Benny Summers, all of Decatur.

Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Price officiating.

William Eugene "Gene" Farmer, 74, of Ten Mile, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Brookewood Nursing Facility in Decatur.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Athens, was a retired employee of TVA and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a medical technician during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post No. 5146 and was a member of the Meigs County Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Charlie and Dora Hickman Farmer; two brothers, Robert Norman and George Farmer; and one grandson, Joseph Brent Walden.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Powers Farmer of Ten Mile; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Vivian and Roger Bales of Ten Mile, Debra and Tyson Kress of Knoxville, Darlene and Sammy Branham Jr. of Roane County, Pamela and Peter La Freniere of Boston, Mass., and Lisa Sloop of Decatur; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin and Jane Farmer of Calhoun, Ga., and Jack and Lena Farmer of Decatur; one sister, Mary Craig of Calhoun, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Christa Allen, William Eric Powell, Roger Dewayne Bales, Chadwick Branham, Ashleigh Sloop, Andrew Gordon and Hannah La Freniere; six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Lee Farmer of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Delaware and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Marie Elizabeth Matherly Palmer and was of the Holiness faith. He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Lee Palmer; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Trula Harmon Pressley.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Pressley Palmer of Athens; five daughters and one son-in-law, Kim Palmer and Dawn Palmer, both of New Castle, Del., Carol and Scott Jack and Tammy Bartlett, all of Athens, and Crystal Smith of Englewood; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Julie Palmer of Athens; two granddaughters, Nikita Jack and Nichole Bartlett; and five grandsons, Dylan Palmer, Jacob Cooper, Johnathan Jack, Justin Jack and Nicholas Bartlett.

A native and lifelong resident of Athens, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Pearl Smith Lipps. She was the widow of the late Clyde H. Carroll and was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Torbett.

Survivors include one daughter, Joan Ballew of Swannanoa, N.C.; three grandchildren, Frank Ballew, Brian Torbett and Theresa Clark and husband, Paul; five great-grandchildren, Savannah Ballew, Cullen Torbett and Jesse, Shelby and Cheyenne Clark.

Wilma Marie Lillard Cranfield, 80, of Trenton, and formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at a Jackson hospital.

A native of Polk County and a resident of McMinn County for most of her life, she had lived in Trenton for the past five years. She was a daughter of the late John Newt and Laura Lawson Lillard and was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifton Cranfield, on March 27, 1975; one daughter, Claudia Wood, on Nov. 6, 1996; one son, Lillard Clifton "Skip" Cranfield, on March 15, 2001; and two grandsons, James Travis Cranfield and Victor "Butch" Labron Wood. She attended Valley Road Baptist Church and Berea Baptist Church and had formerly attended Mt. Verd Baptist Church in Athens. A retired employee of Athens Furniture Company, she was a member of the Athens YMCA and an avid walker.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, James Martin "Bud" and Carolyn Cranfield of Trenton, Chester Ray and Carla Cranfield of Wilmington, N.C., and Lynn and Diane Cranfield of Riceville; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Anna Ruth Greene of Benton, Ruby and Raymond Moore of Athens, and Norma Jean Land of Dumfries, Va.; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Herbert and Margaret Lillard of Athens, Dan Lillard of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mitch Lillard of Lafayette, Ga.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul "Pistol" Richard Passmore, 86, of Benton, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

A native and lifelong resident of Polk County, he had been a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church since the church was founded in 1933. Recently, he had watched over the grounds and was caretaker of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Passmore; one infant son, Preston Passmore; eight brothers and sisters, Olin Passmore, Mae Dale, Wayne Passmore, Etheleen Brown, Nora Lee, Pauline Beard, Charles Passmore and James Passmore. He was a son of the late Rev. G.W. and Mattie Davis Passmore.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Waldrop of Linsdale; one son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sue Passmore of Linsdale; one stepdaughter, Gina Bain of Cleveland; two grandchildren, Marty Cross and Shawna Raines; three great-grandchildren, Mason Cross, Avery Cross and Ethan Fadroski; one brother, Bud Passmore of Benton; one sister, Marie Beard of Benton; and many other nieces, nephews and extended family members.
