Dorothy Marie Whitehead
She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher with the Knoxville City School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe S. Whitehead; five brothers, John A. Moon, James Moon, Nathaniel Moon, Harvey Moon and Walter Moon; and two sisters, Margaret Moon Kelly and Agatha Moon.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jim Delap; one brother, Robert Moon; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Phyllis Shelton, Julia Madix and Mable and Alan McKinney; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Edgewood Cemetery with the Rev. Shirley Delap officiating.

A native of Chattanooga, he was a son of the late Richard and Helen Fitzgerald Cornish. He was the president of Wellstone Securities in Cumming, Ga., and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Matthew R. Cornish of Athens; Jennifer H. Johnson, mother of Matthew, friend and former wife, of Athens; two stepsons, Johnathan Billings of Athens, and Brandon Billings of Winder, Ga.; one sister, Pam Morrow of Crossville; one brother, Larry Cornish of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Bernard and the Rev. Jamie Sickert officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

A native of Bellingham, Wash., she had lived in McMinn County for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Englewood Christian Church and had been employed by the McMinn County Department of Education, as a school bus driver, for more than 30 years. She was a daughter of the late Harold L. and Bea Lewtas Glassburn, and was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Nichols; one daughter, Gena Nichols Moses; and one sister, LaVurn Glassburn.
Survivors include two sons, Matt Nichols of Athens, and Mike Nichols of Englewood; one sister, Dottie McWilliams of Red Bluff, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lindsey Moses, Corey Nichols and Megan Nichols; several aunts and uncles; and two special friends, Roy and Ernestine Runion of Englewood.
Graveside services will be held at a later date.

A native and lifelong resident of Etowah, he was a son of the late Julius and Betty Loftis Starkey. He was a member of Gateway Church of Christ and was retired from Bowater Southern Paper Corporation. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Hamilton Starkey; and two brothers, John Henry Starkey and Luther Starkey Sr.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Mike Casteel of Etowah; two grandchildren, Misty Casteel and Jason Casteel, both of Etowah; one great-grandson, Jordan Casteel of Etowah; one brother, Dewey Wayne Starkey of Etowah; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Hamilton of Etowah, and Shirley Hamilton of Georgia; and three brothers-in-law, Ernest Hamilton, George Hamilton III and Johnny Hamilton, all of Etowah.

Lillian Marie Newton
A native and lifelong resident of Etowah, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Dora Etta Jack Rayburn. She was a member of Etowah Church of Christ and was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Burch; her second husband, J.L. Newton; three brothers, Frank, Robert and Jack Rayburn; and three sisters, Gertrude Mullinax, Kate Neisz and Elizabeth Mullinax.

She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, was a member of the Eastern Star and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bessie Walls May; her husband, Kenneth Shackelford; one son, William Randy Shackelford; three brothers, Kyle, Walter and Ford May; and two sisters, Mable Jackson and Evelyn Lawson.

A Turtletown businessman and a native of Englewood, he was the Salutatorian of his 1947 graduating class at Englewood High School and attended Tennessee Polytechnical Institute in Cookeville, where he received an academic and baseball scholarship. He was an accomplished athlete in basketball and baseball and signed with the Boston Braves farm team and trained in Carrollton, Ga. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and was a member of the Turtletown Ruritan Club.
He served as County Chairman of the Polk County Republican Party and was a volunteer Regional Coordinator for Governor Winfield Dunn. He was owner and operator of Hampton Lumber Company in Turtletown and was a Master Sawyer.
He attended Mars Hill and Englewood United Methodist Churches in Englewood and was an Elder in the Farner Presbyterian Church, where he had been a member for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer G. and Lula Sue Stiles Hampton; his grandparents, James Wesley and America Davis Hampton and Luther and Rispia Ella Ervin Stiles; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Reba Middleton Sr.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Dorothy Middleton Hampton; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Pamela Sisson of Isabella; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Chris Hampton and Doug Dockery of Turtletown, Deborah Gaddis of Blue Ridge, Ga., and Kim Hampton and Barron Earley of Blue Ridge, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Scott Hampton, Heidi Hampton Gladson, Lucas Dockery, Julie Chancey, Brandon Dockery, Matthew Gaddis, Hannah Gaddis and Jamison Earley; four great-grandchildren, Cody and Knox Hampton, Kage Gladson and Hunter Dockery; one brother, Murl R. She was a lifelong resident of Etowah, and worked for more than 20 years at Etowah Manufacturing. She was a devoted member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church in Etowah, where she loved to sing in the choir, and was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Alberta Simpson.

A daughter of the late James Thomas and Mary Ellen "Mamie" Henderson Hughes, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. She was a member of Clearwater Baptist Church, the Ellen Ann Sunday School class and the Home Demonstration Club, and was preceded in death by four brothers, Dave, Miles, Creed and Edward Hughes; and one sister, Maomi McPhail.

Aubrey Doyle McKnight
He was born and lived in Mississippi for 37 years, farming until he and his family moved to Memphis at the end of 1951. He lived in Memphis for 43 years and resided in Athens for the last nine years. He retired from International Harvester Company in Memphis in 1976, after 26 years of service, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Athens. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.W. and Ida Bradbury McKnight; three brothers, Lester, Lawrence and Addis; and one half-sister, Lola.

She had just recently come to make Athens her home, was of the Methodist faith and worked many years in the home and for others. She was preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Martha Simpson; and two husbands, Morris Turnbough and Charles Ferguson.

Robert Hugh Palmer
A native of Athens and a resident of San Bernadino, Calif. for 25 years, he was a son of the late Albert V. and Ruby Mays Palmer and was preceded in death by three brothers, James Ralph "Jim" Palmer, T.L. Palmer and Albert "Red" Palmer; and two sisters, Rosa Lee Moses and Virgie Buckner. He was associated with the state of California as a tree trimmer for 25 years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Moses Palmer of Riceville; one daughter, Tracey Montgomery of Niota; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Palmer of Anza, Calif., and Bill and Penni Palmer and Gary and Kristi Palmer, all of Riceville; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Frankie and Joe Charles of Niota, and Annie Givens of Athens; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James "Nosey" and Mildred Palmer of Athens, and Donald and Phyllis Palmer of Lorida, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Jarod Sheets, Ashley Sheets, Lacey Palmer, Thomas Wilson, Kyle Wilson, Gary, Scott, Tommy, Dennis and Tracey Rose Firth and Angela and Tasha Greer; and one great grandson, Guy Greer.

George Amos Clark Jr.
A native of Smithville, Ga., he was born in nearby Americus, Ga. to the late George A., Sr. and Maida Hatcher Clark. He joined the U.S. Army after high school and trained in the Tank Corps. After his discharge, he completed a doctorate degree at the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. During his graduate study years, he met and married Noble Dooly, from Cleveland, and was called into active duty upon his graduation. He served in the Veterinary Corps of the Army and achieved the rank of 1st Lt. Afterwards, he practiced veterinary medicine in Chester, S.C., but left his practice to join his father-in-law, W.I. Dooly, in the lumber business at Conasauga Lumber Company, where he served as vice president of the company, assisting in management when Mr. Dooly was away to another business in North Carolina.
In 1957, he moved with his wife and two children to Athens, where he founded Hiwassee Builders Supply Company and continued in that company until his death. He was owner and operator of the Savannah Farm, of Polk County, and also of Savannah Sand and Gravel Company. He served as a director of both Conasauga Lumber Company and Haywood Builders Supply Company in North Carolina. He was a partner in CNC Solutions in Athens and served on the original McMinn County Industrial 100 Committee, the Athens-McMinn County YMCA Board and the McMinn County Bond Board. He was a member of the Wildwood Company.
A devoted family man and an active church man, he was a communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and as Junior and Senior Warden. Known for his sound advice and guidance, he was beloved as husband, father, grandfather and caring friend by his family and his extended family.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Clark Jackson.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Noble Dooly Clark of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, George Charles and Kathy Porter Clark of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Lucia Clark and James W. Case of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Albert H. and Edith Clark of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, John Blanton Edgar IV of Portland, Ore., James Philip Case and Elizabeth Noble Case, both of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Amos Clark and Richard Porter Clark, both of Athens; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A memorial service celebrating the life of George A. Clark Jr. will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Randall Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the church courtyard.

A native of Blue Ridge, Ga., she had resided in Etowah for most of her life and was currently a resident of Englewood. A daughter of the late Benjamin Arvil and Nora Adaline Riddley Ingram, she was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She was a retired nurse’s aide at Woods Memorial Hospital and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Buckner; one daughter, Connie Buckner; one grandson, Berry Leamon; and one brother, Fred Ingram, who died at infancy.

A native of Asheville, N.C. and a resident of Etowah for the past 23 years, she was a daughter of the late John Brown and Lottie Deaver Orr. She was retired from J.C. Penney’s and was a charter member of Covenant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Holcombe; two brothers, Ralph and Barclay Orr; and two sisters, Mary Garren and Bernice Bancroft.

Dewayne Edward "Eddie" Robinson Jr.
On May 11, 2004, God called home one of his special angels. Dewayne Edward "Eddie" Robinson Jr. became an angel in heaven instead of an angel on earth.
He was a senior at McMinn County High School, where he was loved by many, and would have graduated on May 22, 2004. He was employed at Wendy’s of Athens and was a son of the late Dewayne Edward Robinson Sr. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Barbara Arnett Liegl; and his paternal grandparents, Mary Sue and Jesse Robinson.
Survivors include his loving mother, LaDana Arnett Robinson of Athens; his younger brother, Joseph Andrew Robinson of Athens, who will always look up to Eddie for guidance; an aunt who will always miss him, Deborah Knox of Etowah; his cousins and best friends, Sheena Knox and Kyle Knox, both of Etowah; two special cousins, Chris Robinson and Kenny White of Athens; three special friends, Kathy, Kasey and Kody McFarland; and several other uncles, aunts and cousins, who will love and miss him every day.
