Melvin Patrick Caldwell
He grew up in the Presbyterian Church and was a 1977 graduate of Kirkman High School, where he was very proficient in welding and metal shop. He was employed for 27 years at Duracell in Cleveland, as a materials handler and was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Herman Caldwell; and one sister, Nana Caldwell.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Marsha Renee Constant Caldwell of Cleveland; two children, Brandi Renee Caldwell and Terrance D. Constant, both of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Terrance Constant Jr., Eleazar "Woudie" Thomas and Lanaja E. Constant, all of Cleveland; his mother, Patricia Caldwell Morris of Charleston; one sister, Angela Ann Caldwell of Chattanooga; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Paula Caldwell of Chesapeake, Va.; four uncles and spouses, Glen and Barbara Caldwell of Atlanta, Ga., Wilbur and Peggy Moore of Calhoun, Andrew and Betty Moore of Charleston, and Ricky and Bonita Moore of Chattanooga; four aunts, Jeanette Bayless, Elizabeth Brice, Wilma Moore and Iva Moore, all of Charleston; two nieces, Roslan Moore of Chattanooga, and Troyanna McCallie of Charleston; one nephew, Kenny Caldwell of South Carolina; his grandmother, Lillian Moore of Charleston; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Watson’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Charleston with the Rev. Robert Jones and the Rev. Bea Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Hammonds Cemetery in Athens.

George Earl Jerome Townsend
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late George D. and Frances Cornette Townsend and was preceded in death by one brother, James Townsend.
Survivors include two daughters, Tiffany Townsend of Athens, and Georgia Ann Townsend of Cleveland; two sons, Travis Townsend of Riceville, and John Townsend of Niota; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Ronnie Walker of Sweetwater, and Tina and James Morgan of Crossville; and several nieces and nephews.

William "Bill" Smith
A native of Patterson, N.J. and a former resident of Califon, N.J., he had lived in McMinn County for more than 18 years. A son of the late Frank Smith, he was a member of Spring Creek United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired from the N.J. Bell Telephone Company and was preceded in death by his wife, Shannon I. Krise Smith; one sister, Mary Rouse; and one brother, John Smith.
Survivors include three sons, Harry Lee Smith of Bethlehem, Pa., James Allen Smith of Phillipsburg, Pa., and Patrick Kevin Smith of Easton, Pa.; his mother, Kathryn Seals Smith of Montgomery, Ala.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Aletta Hanna of Montgomery, Ala.
Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Spring Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Burlingham officiating. Burial will follow in Lower Spring Creek Cemetery.

He attended the Watts Bar Church of God, was an avid hunter and was preceded in death by his father, Cam Jackson Goines; one brother, Cam Jackson Goines Jr.; two sisters, Charlene Goines Shelton and Brenda K. Goines.

Jack L. Huggins
A son of the late William and Martha Davis Huggins, he resided in McMinn County most of his life. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force, and was preceded in death by five brothers, Wheeler, David, Sammy, Bill and George Huggins; and one sister, Louise Fowler.
Survivors include one special sister-in-law, Eula Huggins of Englewood; one special niece, Judy Huggins of Englewood; two sisters, Mary Ann McDonald of Maryville, and Evelyn Bain of Kingston; two brothers, Jimmy Huggins of Fayetteville, N.C., and Henry Huggins of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank A. Varnell
A son of the late Samuel and May Varnell, he was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church and had attended Lena Vista United Methodist Church in Auburndale, Fla. He was the former owner of Sloan & Webb Implement Company in Sweetwater and was a former Monroe County Assistant Agriculture Extension Agent. He was employed by Hiwassee College for several years as agriculture manager, where he started several programs, and was named Bradley County Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year in 1955. He was a past president of the Monroe County Farm Bureau and was a graduate of John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. He furthered his education with graduate work at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Col. John Varnell, Dr. Gilbert Varnell and Wayne Varnell.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gloria Leach Varnell of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Roy Hutsell of Athens, and Karen and Rick Cole of Cleveland; two grandsons and one spouse, Robert and April Randolph of Athens, and Ryan Randolph of Knoxville; one brother, Sam Varnell of Maryville; one sister-in-law, Margaret Varnell of Cleveland; one brother-in-law, Paul Leach of Atlanta, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Alan Roberts of Niota.

Sherman Dye

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Clinton and Lillie Mae Jones Dye. He started cutting hair from his home while a young child and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a medic and barber while in the military. He went to Barber’s College in Jacksonville, Fla., and was owner/operator of the Robert E. Lee Barber Shop from 1932 to 1989, and retired after cutting hair for 57 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Kennedy Dye; one sister, Nettie Belle Dye Mikel; and one brother, William "Bill" Dye.
Survivors include three nephews, Larry Kennedy of Athens, Gary Kennedy of Louisville, and Don Kennedy of Maryville; seven nieces, Wilma McConnell of Cleveland, Helen Thompson of Lenoir City, Janet Bidwell of Riceville, Reba Hiefnar and Vickie McCamish, both of Athens, Bobbie Thomas of Riceville, and Carol Kennedy of Maryville; two sisters-in-law, Edna Dye of Cleveland, and Belva Kennedy of Athens; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Nellie Dennis of Athens.

George Earl "Tommy" Call
A son of the late Dave and Ethel Moore Call, he resided in McMinn County most of his life. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Junior Call.
Survivors include three sisters, Linda Hickman, Frankie Call and Wanda McKeehan, all of Athens; three brothers, Donald Call and Eugene Call, both of Etowah, and Ralph Call of Englewood; several nieces, nephews and many other friends; and special friends, Jimmy and Hazel Moses.

Pryor Nelson Ingram

He was born July 1, 1921, in Tellico Plains to the late John and Nettie Ingram, and was happily married for 61 years to Louise Moses Ingram. Together they had three children, Danny, Donna, who passed in infancy in 1949, and Davey Ingram.
A veteran of World War II, he served with distinction in the European Theater. After victory in Europe, he was stationed for a brief period in the Philippines just before the end of the war. He served with the 86th Infantry Division, the Blackhawks, and in the Military Police Platoon. He earned many citations and medals during his enlistment and attained the rank of Private First Class.
Among his great loves was the game of baseball. He could readily recall, and loved to share, his many memories and team statistics concerning his beloved Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. He was an instinctive gardener, whose special talent allowed him to treat his friends and loved ones with the best sweet corn, green beans and tomatoes that ever grew. He was an expert with a pool cue and happily shared what he had learned about this game that he dearly loved. He was instrumental in winning several billiards championships for the McMinn Senior Activity Center in Athens, where he regularly exercised, socialized and played pool with "The Boys" and enjoyed the company of his many dear friends.
In addition to his military service, he also had an interesting and varied professional career. Among his adventures, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he was instrumental in the completion of Smoky Mountain National Park. He worked for McMinn Memory Gardens, where he helped complete the construction of the cemetery, and for the Robert E. Lee Laundry. He was the parts manager for Tennessee Motors for many years and was also parts manager for Hixson Ford. He completed his work history by serving as the groundskeeper and gardener for the Armstrong family at Holly Hills Estate.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and Andrew; two sisters, Kitty Huff and Violet Ingram; and 15 other half-brothers and half-sisters, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Louise; his eldest son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Ann Ingram of Mobile, Ala.; his youngest son and daughter-in-law, Davey and Linda Ingram of Nashville; his grandchildren and their spouses, Karen and Craig McEntyre of Calhoun, Ga., Lisa Gentry of Cartersville, Ga., Chris and Anissa Ingram of Philadelphia, Pa., and David Ingram of Nashville; five great-grandchildren, Kelly and Cathy McEntyre, Nicholas Gentry and Vivian and Scott Ingram; and his older brother, John "Big Shorty" Ingram, a longtime resident of Athens.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ziegler Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow with his cousin, Lee Ingram, officiating. A graveside ceremony with full military honors will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McMinn Memory Gardens.

James W. "Jim" Shultz
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Daniel Wesley and Katheryn Pearl Harris Shultz. He was a member of Goodsprings Baptist Church and was a well-known McMinn County dairy farmer and the owner of Shultz Farms in Athens. He was preceded in death by one brother, Hubert Shultz; and two sisters, Zenna Lee Perry and Dorthy Hutsell.

Ruby Dean Dillard
Born March 9, 1936, in Monroe County and a resident of Etowah for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Jeanette Hudson Bowers. She was a member of Conasauga Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by one son, Ricky A. Dillard; one brother, Jay Bowers; one sister, Eldora Bowers; and one grandson, Brian A. Green.
Survivors include her husband, George A. Virginia Josephine Grant Frye
A native and former resident of Athens, she grew up in the Mt. Harmony community. A graduate of McMinn County High School, she was a former member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
She and her family moved to Tacoma, Wash., in January 1955, where she became a member of Highland Hill Baptist Church and was their treasurer and historian for 40 years. At age 50, she graduated from Tacoma Community College with an associate’s degree in science. In 1982, she retired from Tacoma General Hospital after 19 years as a laboratory technician. Of her many hobbies, she was a great Teddy Bear enthusiast with a collection numbering more than 100 and also is remembered by many for the handcrafted bears that she created.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Anson and May Naomi Mason Grant; one brother, Victor Grant; and one son-in-law, William Montgomery.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Frye of Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter, Frances Montgomery of Tacoma, Wash.; two sons, Don Frye and Merv Frye, both of Tacoma, Wash.; one granddaughter, Darcy Kinkela-Frye of Tacoma, Wash.; her twin sisters, Jurldine Arnold of Byron, Ga., and Murline Goins of Lake Charles, La.; and one sister-in-law, Lois Grant of Greenville, S.C.

Michael Vincent Muschell
He had been a resident of Etowah for the past 8 years, having moved here from Jupiter, Fla. During life he was a master carpenter, having constructed many fine homes in both Tennessee and Florida, which stand as a monument to his craftsmanship. He was of the Lutheran faith.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 23 years, Adrienne Valentine Muschell, who will love and miss him every day; his parents, Edward and Patricia Muschell of Gainesville, Ga.; his father-in-law, Curtis Valentine of Jupiter, Fla.; two brothers, David Muschell of Milledgeville, Ga., and Jeffrey Muschell of Gainesville, Ga.; his twin sister, Melinda McBain and husband, Harry, of Gainesville, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Neal Valentine of Jupiter, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Eva Valentine of Singer Island, Fla., and Kirsten Barnes and husband, Thomas, of Richmond, Va.; three nephews, Adam McBain, Brandon Valentine and Jameson Barnes; and four nieces, Danielle Valentine, Erin McBain and Sophia and Olivia Muschell.

Hobert E. "Gene" Jones Jr.
A native of Etowah and a resident there until 1976, when he moved to North Carolina, he was a son of the late Hobert E. "Feets" Jones Sr. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Etowah, where he was saved and baptized, and worked at Comm-Scope for 25 years. He was a former professional softball player.
Survivors include one daughter, Stefanie Jones of Lincolnton, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Wendy Heffinger of Catawba, N.C.; his mother, Ola Jones of Etowah; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Debra Jones of Etowah; and two grandchildren, Alexandra Nicole and Chance Shults.

He was a heavy equipment operator and attended Eastview Baptist Church in Etowah. He was a son of the late Bill and Grace Cunningham Sliger and was preceded in death by one son, Tim Sliger; one grandson, Nicholas Sliger; and one brother, Jim Sliger.

A native of Bradley County, she had resided in McMinn County for most of her life. A daughter of the late William J. Franks, she was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church. She was one of the team organizers of the Relay for Life, which is held annually, and taught seventh and eighth grades at Calhoun Elementary School. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and Tennessee Technological University, with a master’s degree, and was preceded in death by her grandmother, Eunice Howard.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sophia Renade Freeman; two sisters, Sue Veals and Lillie Keaton; three brothers, Ira, Junior and J.C. Phillips; and her former husband, Osbond Wade Freeman.

Nancy Haynes Brown
A native of Wilkes Barre, Pa., and a resident of Meigs County since 1972, she was a daughter of the late John Godfrey and Minnie Shook Haynes. She was a graduate of Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania and taught school in Pennsylvania, New York and Tennessee. She resigned her teaching job in Wilkes Barre, Pa. in 1940 and came to Tennessee to become a house mother in an orphan home for girls in Livingston. During this time, she visited schools in three counties and taught Bible stories, using flannel graf pictures to the stories she taught the children.
In 1942, she and the Rev. Ray F. Brown were married. She was gifted in music and taught many boys and girls to play the piano, and could play the organ. She also organized children’s choirs and, at different times, taking her choir of children to the State Hymn Festival, a few times winning the blue ribbon for the winning choir.
She was a tireless church worker and was able to fill in where there was a need. She served for a number of years as director of the YWA in the Watauga Baptist Association and also in the McMinn-Meigs Baptist Association, taking bus loads of young girls to the state and national conventions.
She and her husband had Bible studies in two nursing homes in Sweetwater, two in Athens and one in Decatur for many years, She served as pianist and song leader for those studies.
"We rejoice in the memory of nine people making profession of faith in Jesus Christ as their personal savior. What a pleasure it was to work with the senior citizens in Decatur for some 26 years."
She also served as Pink Lady one afternoon each week for seven years at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, the Rev. Ray F. Brown of Ten Mile; one son, Paul D. Brown of Glenrock, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Julie Goodman of Englewood, David Brown of Lenoir City, and Charlie Brown of Pennsylvania; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Helen Haynes of Nanuett, N.Y.

A native of Cisco, Ga., and a resident of Etowah for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Austin R. and Mable Sharp Ingram. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, a certified English teacher and had worked with special education children in Florida. She was the chairman of Diamond Jubilee, the chairman of the Bicentennial Committee, the Commissioner of Finance for two terms and had served on the Utility Board, the Etowah Regional Planning Commission, as Vice-Mayor, as City Manager and had served on the Etowah Historical Commission to Restore the Etowah L&N Depot, completed in 1981, which was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. She was a member of the Etowah Friendly Garden Club for many years and was honored by John Duncan Sr. for her work on the Depot. She was a recipient of the Frank McKinney Award and ran the Museum of Yesterday’s Toys in St. Augustine, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver G. Burgess Jr.; four sisters, Gladys Ingram, Marie Witt, Ruth Reithmaier and Lucille Melton; and three brothers, Jack, Cecil and Sam Ingram.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters in law, Michael and Emily Burgess of Moses Lake, Wash., W. Gregory and Linda Burgess of Bellevue, Wash., and Kenneth "Ken" R. Francis Marion Henry
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Madisonville, where he served as a deacon for several years, and was Sunday School Director of the adult No. 2 department for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Enterprise, and was a member of the American Legion in Tellico Plains. He was a charter member of the Madisonville Optimist Club and was an avid baseball fan. He helped organize youth baseball in Madisonville and coached and supported youth programs for nearly two decades. He retired as owner and operator of Vonore Pulpwood Yard after 22 years and was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Rebecca Henry; one sister; and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bernice Plemons Henry; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Joe and Barbara Henry of Madisonville, and Kenneth James and Arlinda Henry of Louisville; five grandchildren, Steve and Tim Henry, both of Madisonville, Patrick and Adam Henry, both of Sweetwater, and Rachel Henry of Kingsport; two great-grandchildren, Jerron Henry of Madisonville, and Madison Henry of Sweetwater; and several nieces and nephews.

John F. Ferrell
A Carter County native, he had lived in Athens from 1978 to 1988, and most of his life in the Johnson City area. He was a son of the late Carl Franklin and Helen Blevins Ferrell, and was preceded in death by one brother, Oscar Ferrell; and one sister, Frances Campbell. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a steamfitter by profession, a retired piping superintendent with the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was an ordained Baptist minister, serving in the Holston and Watauga Associations, and had attended Unaka Avenue Baptist Church.

After a career of teaching, she went into the restaurant business, having spent her career in Racine, Wis. She then retired to Athens, before moving to Signal Mountain three years ago to spend her golden years. She was active in Signal Crest United Methodist Church and in Keith Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Wesley Roberts; her husband, Harry Taubert; and one daughter, Sherry Seltenright.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Jones Mortuary with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Clinton.
The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Samuel Marion Brock Jr.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Alcoa, was a past master of Rockford Masonic Lodge No. 469, was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and was a past worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Martha Washington Chapter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Vida Masengil Brock; one son, Terry Marion Brock; his parents, Samuel and Minnie Brock; six brothers, Reed Hill Brock, Eugene E. Brock, Frank N. Brock, Lloyd B. Brock, Ben H. Brock and Jack M. Brock; and one sister, Ruby G. Brock.
Survivors include one son, Samuel David Brock of Leesburg, Va.; and one brother, Newell H. Brock of Livingston.
Masonic and funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the west chapel of Smith Mortuary with the Rev. Greg Kelly and the Rev. George Gilbert officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sunrise Cemetery in Englewood.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Newell Bacon
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Robert J. and Nora Roderick Bacon, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Bacon and Edd Bacon; and one sister, Kathleen Bacon. He was a member of North Athens Baptist Church and was an avid gardener. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was associated with Mayfield Dairy, Ice Cream Department, for 38 years, until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Womac Bacon of Athens; two daughters and one son-in-law, Shirley and T.R. Casteel and Rita Bacon, all of Athens; one son, Carroll Edwin Bacon of Athens; two granddaughters, Christy Walker and Jeanne Casteel; one great-grandson, Ben Walker; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and Houston Belk of Sweetwater, Ida Lee and Milton Hall of Louisville, Ky., Nora Mae and Paul Kelly of Grenada, Miss., and Dean and Darrell Newman and Jean and David James, all of Chattanooga; and one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Christine Bacon of Cleveland.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Kerr officiating. Burial followed in Riceville Cemetery with full military honors and with his nephews serving as pallbearers.
The body was in state at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Saturday, where the family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
