Sarah Lue Gibson
A native of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Susan Cleage Gibson. She was formerly a resident of Elmira, N.Y., for 47 years and had been a resident of McMinn County since 1983. She was a retired employee of the Sperry-Rand Corporation and attended First United Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Gibson of Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Hammonds Cemetery.

He was a native of Oklahoma, but lived most of his adult life in McMinn County. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and of the Masonic Lodge. He loved to fish and was a son of the late John and Pearl Frady. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Yarber Frady; one daughter, Robin Sledge; and many of his brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Nora Watson Frady; six children and three spouses, Mark and Becky Frady of Cleveland, Randy Frady of Covington, Doyle and Sharon Everhart of Riceville, Linda Morgan of Athens, and Brenda and Wayne Hearn and Patsy White, all of Benton; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one more due in December; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Ben Watson and the Rev. Cecil Duncan officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at McMinn Memory Gardens and will conclude with a white dove release provided by the funeral home.

A native of Polk County and a resident of Englewood for most of his life, he was a son of the late Delph and Minnie Fisher Howell. He was of the Baptist faith and was employed as a master carpenter. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Blanch Carroll, Edith Boyd, Thelma Hite and Inez King; and one brother, D.E. Howell.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Dan Corvin; one sister, Alma King of Athens; one brother, Homer Howell of Etowah; his companion of many years, Gladys Wampler; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Larry Eugene McCulley
He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Clinton and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served two tours in Vietnam. He was a loving husband and father, his family was most important to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Pauline McCulley; and one brother, Donald McCulley.

Armstrong; two daughters, Arvella Williams and Edith Armstrong; one sister, Donnie Ferguson; and one brother, Glen Newman.

T.W. Smith
A native of Brownsville, Texas, he was a son of the late Clifton and Neva Pinkard Smith. He was a member of Clearsprings Baptist Church and a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer after 30 years of service, having served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Venable Smith of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Darlene and Gary Dawson of Sweetwater; four sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Annette Smith of Louisville, Colo., Manuel and Joan Smith of Cleveland, Michael and Judy Smith of Athens, and David Neal and Donna Smith of Decatur; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Darl and Christine Smith of Athens, Texas, and Jimmy and Pat McCarty of Tyler, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Known to his many friends as a caring husband, loving father and grandfather, he was born to Frank Otto and Mary Kathryn Prince Cotton on Dec. 24, 1940. He was received at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in 1989, when he moved to Carrollton, Ga., from Chattanooga and where he was a dedicated member of the congregation. His memorable intelligence, loyalty and enthusiastic manner were evident in his love of coin collecting, Tennessee/Georgia games, travel and nature.
Survivors include his wife, Jody, of Villa Rica, Ga.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dawn Anne Malone of Jasper, and Lorin Elizabeth and Frank Pendley of Chickamauga, Ga.; one son, Michael Gary Cotton; and five grandchildren, Patrick, Jennifer, Wyatt, Gabe and Garrett.

He was employed for many years at Bob Wilson Used Cars and worked construction for Clydus Porter for many years. A native of Quebradillas, Puerto Rico, and a resident of McMinn County for the past 43 years, she was a daughter of the late Geronimo Perez and Ana Maria Prieto Valles. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and received her master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee. She taught school for 30 years for Etowah City Schools and was a member of Delano Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star and was a Past Matron in 1990.

A native of Sand Mountain, Ala., and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Harrison Cleveland and Nona Crockett Kincaid. He was a former member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and, for the past 47 years, was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Niota, where he was an active deacon for 40 years and was currently serving as Deacon Emeritus. He had also served in the capacities of Sunday School and Training Union Director and teacher and sang in the choir. He was a loving, caring husband, daddy, papaw and brother and was a retired member of the Farm Bureau Board. His first job was working at Alcoa Aluminum Corporation and he was retired from Kelly Shepherd & Son Texaco Distributing Plant. He was a retired farmer and was preceded in death by one infant brother, Samuel Kincaid.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Dollie King Jones and was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an electrical contractor. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clifford, Homer, Arnold and Robert Jones and four sisters, Lucy Hunt, Lil Norwood, Lorene Banks and Betty Montgomery Willard.

Walter Eldon Rives Sr.
He was the son of the late L.Z. Rives and Ethel Rives Burgett, and was preceded in death by one son, Bill Rives; and one granddaughter, Danica Holder. He was a member of Albertville Church of God and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the electrical program at Iowa State University and was instrumental in wiring the first jet propulsion take-off system. After his military service, he went on to graduate from Bob Jones College in Sevierville. He was a former employee of Hiwassee Utility and later performed contract electrical work where he helped wire the Village Shopping Center. He also worked many years as a newspaper carrier for the Chattanooga Times and many other local newspapers.
Survivors include his former wife and caretaker for several years, Christine Rives; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janice White of Augusta, Ga., Melody and Dan Griffith of Calhoun, and DeLonda and Glenn Calfee of Cleveland; one son and daughter-in-law, Walter Eldon Jr. and Darla Rives of Cleveland; two brothers, Ottis Rives of Chattanooga, and DeLeath Rives of Gadsden, Ala.; one sister, Norma Garrett of Oneonta, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Tanner Rives, David McAlister, Richard McAlister, George McAlister, Orey Griffith, Colby Griffith, Andy Calfee, Ryan McCartt and David McCartt; six great-grandchildren, Tiffany Sims, Daniel McAlister, Rachel McAlister, Alyssa McAlister, Andrew McAlister and Grace McAlister; two great-great-grandchildren, Kynslei Sims and Kyra Sims; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Blount County, a former resident of Birchwood, where he raised his family, and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Harvey and Nora Walker Whitener and was a member of Hill Top Full Gospel Church. He was a loving, caring husband and father whom was very much loved and will be greatly missed. He was pastor of Hill Top Full Gospel Church for the past six years and was a wonderful father and the best Papa to his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Halbert Whitener; and one granddaughter, Misty Dawn Whitener.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Duggan Whitener of Riceville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Wilma Patterson of Athens, Betty and Johnny Vandergriff of Decatur, and Frieda and Henry Burns of Old Fort; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert Jr. and Diane Whitener of Decatur, and Claude and Denna Whitener of Birchwood; one stepson, Johnny Robinson of Riceville; one special niece, Linda Finger of Georgia; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Omie Whitener and Irene Grogan, both of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a son of the late U.S. and Grace Farris Cox, formerly of Meigs County, and was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Cox, formerly of Benton.

He retired from Alcoa and was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Myers; one sister, Dora Mae Evans; and five brothers, Ernest Myers, J. Marion Myers, Frank Myers Sr., Sam Myers and Austin Myers.

Gus Reed Robinson
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Robert N. and Pearl Lemming Robinson. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was loved so dearly and was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Riceville, where he was baptized on Sept. 12, 2004. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate on the battleship USS Mitchell, and was a deputy sheriff for six years serving under Sheriff Roy Buttram. He retired from the Johns Manville Corporation after 12 years in 1993 and was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Gerald and Don Robinson; and one granddaughter, Janice Bayes.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Iva Hyde Robinson of Athens; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Guinn Derrick of Englewood, Sherri Robinson of Athens, and Diane and Bill Bayes of Brunswick, Ohio; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gary and Deirdre Robinson of Englewood, Jim and Colleen Robinson of Knoxville, and Daryl Robinson and Larry and Jeanie Womac, all of Athens; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Glenna Sue Carpenter of Bellflower, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a native of Detroit, Mich., and was a resident of McMinn County for six years. A son of the late Richard and Sara Clark Little, he was owner and operator of a video store and was a former employee of the Athens Sears store. He was of the Catholic faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his companion, Loretta Boyd of Athens; one daughter, Heidi Elizabeth Little of Aiken, S.C.; one brother, Robert Jack Little of Northville, Mich.; and several nieces.

A native of Spain, and a former resident of Sweetwater, she taught at Sweetwater High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College while her husband was a professor at the Tennessee Military Institute. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was an avid photographer and gardener.
Survivors include her husband, Dan Traylor; one son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Susan Traylor of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Rolanda Hartung and Susan Goetze, both of Venezuela; and one grandson, Nicholas Traylor.

Jimmie Ruth Wood Webb
Born Feb. 28, 1935, in Meigs County to Velma Daisy Piersaul and the late James Hardwick Wood, she was preceded in death by one brother, Rudolph Wood. She attended College Hill High School and was nominated Miss College Hill. She graduated from Tennessee State University in 1958 and earned her master’s degree from Trevecca-Nazarene College in Nashville. She taught at Dyer County School in Dyersburg and in the Cleveland City School System for 35 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
Her love for children inspired her to become a foster parent and she professed religion at a very early age. She became a member of East Cleveland Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she remained a devoted, loyal member until her health failed. Her favorite scripture was 23 Psalms.
She leaves to cherish her memory two beloved, devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Lasala Webb and Hurley D. Upton and Javanna Webb and Alvin Upton, all of Cleveland; her mother, Velma Daisy Piersaul Wood; one grandchild, Tanez Webb Upton of Cleveland; one brother, Marvin Wood of Cleveland; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Maxie Margenia Wood McKissie and Janice Wood White, both of Cleveland, and Shelia Wood and Frank Pinckney of Jacksonville, Fla.
Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woods Cemetery in Georgetown with Pastor Joseph Milner officiating. The family will assemble at 255 High St., in Cleveland and welcomes all friends to travel to the gravesite with them.

Smith, in June 2000; one sister, Marie Irvin; one brother, Everett Hall; one granddaughter, Tammy Smith; and one son-in-law, Chester Anderson.

A native of Murphy, N.C., he grew up in the Zion Hill community near Englewood and was a son of the late William Le and Nellie Fulton King. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith King Anderson and Beatrice King Walker; and three brothers, Jude King, Emmitt King and Norman King. He was a member of Valley View Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and had been a dairy farmer for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lucille McKinney King of Athens; one daughter, Elaine King of Athens; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Pat King, Wayne and Wanda King and Don King, all of Athens; one granddaughter and her husband, Kristy King and Brian Layman; one great-granddaughter, MaKayla Layman; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Miami, Okla., and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Henry and Tommie Rhoads Cochran. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, was an active member of Englewood United Methodist Church, was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a 50-year member of the Englewood Masonic Lodge No. 633. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ann Cantrell; and one granddaughter, Heather Melinda Cochran.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Cora Bledsoe Williams. She was a member of Clay Hill Baptist Church and had attended First Church of God of Athens. She worked at Athens Hosiery Mills for 21 years and was retired from Collins Chair Factory in Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Bledsoe; one brother, Paul Williams; one sister, Frankie Shelton; one grandson, Greg Bledsoe; and one great-grandson, Jacob Jenkins.

Born Nov. 10, 1922, in the Lakeside community of Monroe County, he attended the University of California at Berkeley. He was a son of the late Harless K. Sr. and Annie Lee Dawson Brakebill and was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret June Brakebill; and one sister, Joann Brakebill Clampitt. He attended First Presbyterian Church of Madisonville and lived most of his life in Hawaii and California, returning to Monroe County in 1985. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines, and also serving on the ships USMM and USA. He was the owner of Brakebill Construction Company in California for many years and was well-known for his genealogy and local folklore and his knowledge of many properties of Monroe County.

A native of Hyatt, he grew up in Blue Ridge, Ga., and lived in Athens for the past 48 years. He was a son of the late O.B. "Kay" Ferguson and the late Florence Curtis Ferguson Roberson and was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dillard Roberson; one granddaughter, Christie Ferguson Coleman; and one son-in-law, Sam Derrick. He was a member and deacon at McMahan Calvary Baptist Church and was the first welding instructor for the Tennessee Technology Center at Athens. He retired after 20 years of teaching and was a former employee of Bowater Southern Paper Corporation and the Y-12 Plant at Oak Ridge.

Rev. Wade Wolford Freeman
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Osborne Wade and Bessy Beatrice Phillips Coleman Freeman and was a member of Church of Ooltewah. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sophie Freeman.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Tommy Frye of Athens, and Ginnie and Seth Wilson of Riceville; one son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Crystal Freeman of Athens; six grandchildren, Cory, Caleb and Gabrielle Frye, Summer Warlock and Hunter and Ethan Freeman; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Vivian and Chuck Butler of Athens, and Suzie and Butch Nunley, Valerie and Gary Howard and Rosie and Olen Borden, all of Riceville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Ooltewah with the Rev. Larry Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery in Englewood.

Cora Lee Raper Barnett
A native of Mt. Vernon, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Rachel Arizona Gibson Raper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry "Pie" Barnett, on Feb. 10, 1997, and was a member of Dixon Avenue Baptist Church and a former employee of Tennessee Hosiery Mill.
Survivors include one daughter, Norma Jackson of Chattanooga; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Doyle Barnett of Englewood, and Jerry and Dorothy Barnett of Hixson; two brothers, J.C. Raper of Pensacola, Fla., and Dee Raper of Englewood; two sisters, Lucille Newman of Etowah, and Bonnie McMillan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Cochran Cemetery.

Florence Opal Brown Godsey
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Madisonville, a member of the Madisonville Home Demonstration Club and a member of the Monroe County Senior Citizens since the organization began in the early 1970s and had served on the Board of Directors for more than 20 years. She served on the Board of Directors of the Monroe County Pilot Club and the East Tennessee Council of Aging, which serves 16 counties. She was preceded in death by her parents, Osborne and Mildred Brown; three sisters, Lou Emma Layman, Audrey Brown and Virginia Blevins; and two brothers, Onus and Powell Brown.
Survivors include two nephews, Allen Brown of Sweetwater, and Roy Godsey Jr. of Knoxville; two nieces, Evelyn Culvahouse of Martin, and Frances Layman of Athens; and one great-nephew, Eli Brown of Sweetwater.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Curtis Woods officiating.

Willie" Raymond Jewell Metheny Jr.A native of Indianapolis, Ind., he and his wife, Kate, have lived in McMinn County for the past two years. He was a member of Miracle Deliverance Tabernacle and was a retired Union Iron Worker. He was the son of the late Raymond Jewell and Ellanora Landis Metheny Sr., and was preceded in death by one son, Billy Ray Metheny; and two brothers, Gene Hackney and William Alpha Metheny
Survivors include his wife, Kate Marie McKee of Riceville; six children, Patrick Metheny, Vincent Metheny, Greg Metheny and Mike Gillium, all of Indianapolis, Ind., and Cricket Nixon and Kert Nixon, both of Athens; three brothers, Wayne Metheny of Athens, Ed Metheny of Indianapolis, Ind., and Brad Metheny of Oregon; one sister, Anita Loman of Martinsville, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Heather, Amy, Heather Ann, Hunter, Emily, Christopher and Anakin Jewell; one great-grandson, Riley; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Robert Sr. and Christine Daugherty Stephens, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cagle Stephens, on April 20, 2001; one grandson, Collin Stephens; and one brother, Eddie Stephens. He was a member of West End Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, choir director and Sunday school teacher. He was a retired employee of Athens Products after 30 years of service.

Eva Miller Coleman
A native of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late John and Lou Ella Patterson Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Butler Coleman; one son-in-law, Robert French; one daughter-in-law, Teresa Coleman; and one granddaughter, Natalie Lynn Coleman. She was a member of East Athens Baptist Church and, for several years, she worked with the children and would sing in the Adult and Teenagers Choir. She was associated with City Park School’s cafeteria until her retirement and was a cook at First Baptist Church for several years. She belonged to the Home Demonstration Club and RSVP.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Patsy and Johnny Lipps of Etowah, and Barbara Scalf of Panama City, Fla.; one son, Steve Lynn Russell of Etowah; three grandchildren, John Lipps, Stefanie Crye and the Rev. James "J.E." Packett
He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church of Athens, was a long-time employee of Sweetwater Utilities and chief water plant operator for more than 25 years, and was preceded in death by one son, Freddie E. Packett.
