Sarah L. Comerford Claudon, 75, of Dentin Hills in Columbia for the past year, and a resident of Athens for 30 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at her residence.

A native of Jacksonville, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Dunniway, and the wife of the late Thomas Comerford and the late L. Gerald Claudon. She was a retired newspaper business owner.

Survivors include five sons and four daughters-in-law, Jeff and Susan Comerford of Clark County, Ill., Todd Comerford of DuPage County, Ill., Conn and Linda Comerford of Athens, Dann and Terry Comerford of Niota, and Tedd and Lisa Comerford of Columbia; two granddaughters, Cassidy and Peyton Comerford; six grandsons, Clark, Ty, Brett, Heath, Mitch and Preston Comerford; and one sister, Margaret Niccum of Columbia.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Clark, Ty, Brett, Heath and Mitch Comerford, Mike Tanzi and Bob Williams.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Conn Comerford, 1416 Miami St., in Athens.

Johnny Mack Parks, 43, of Englewood, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004.

He was a native of Ellijay, Ga., and was a son of the late Calvin Thomas Parks.

Survivors include his mother, Flossie Neal Parks; two brothers, Thomas Roy Parks of Chatsworth, Ga., and James Eugene Parks of Nashville; three sisters, Elizabeth Ann Spurling of Benton, Mary Sue Newton of Cohutta, Ga., and Melissa Pauline Taylor of Reliance; his grandmother, Annie D. Parks of Chatsworth, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Port Chester, N.Y., and had been a resident of Port St. Lucie, Fla., for seven years, having previously lived in Apopka, Fla. He was of the Catholic faith.

Helen A. "Granny" Jones, 67, of Etowah, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at her residence.

She was a resident of McMinn County for 36 years and was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Mildred Heaton. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was preceded in death by six brothers, Russell, Frank, Mickey, Andy, Jim and Mark Heaton.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and David Pryor of Etowah, and Aldia Sue and Tracey Ryan of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one son, James Lee Jones of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Mike McKinney, Chelsie and Jake Pryor, Inga Bivens, Emylli Bidix, Clancey Ryan and Elizabeth and Samantha Jones; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Samson of Grafton, Wis.; her former husband, the Rev. Gary G. Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Wanda Faye Shell, 71, of Etowah, died Monday night, Oct. 4, 2004, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

A native of McMinn County and a resident of Etowah for the past 32 years, she was a daughter of the late James and Velma Thompson Jones. She worked in home health and was a member of First Christian Church of Etowah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Shell; and one sister, Helen Wyatt.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Teresa and Bill Brakefield of London, Ky., and Tina Shell of Etowah; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Greg and Rosa Shell of Etowah, Larry Shell of Oak Ridge, and Steve and Diana Shell of Alexandria, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Heather, Misty, Justin, Jamie and Lauren Shell and Dayna and Shane Brakefield; and one nephew, Michael Wyatt.

Viola Gudger Hardin, 91, of Hampton, and formerly of Niota, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 6, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

A native of Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Harriett Pesterfield Gudger. She will be remembered for her concern for the elderly and for her care of animals. She was a member of Niota United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Chocy Hardin; and one special niece, Irene Clark.

Survivors include one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Glenn and Beulah Hardin of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

Herschel C. Goforth, 76, of Riceville, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and resident of Meigs County during his early years, and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Joe and Sharlet Mae White Goforth. He was of the Baptist faith, was a member of the Thomas A. Hamilton Lodge No. 317 F&AM and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired employee of the American Research Company in Cleveland and was a former part-time employee of Ingles Grocery Store.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Regina Wright Goforth of Riceville; one daughter, Janice Goforth of Riceville; one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky Herschel and Rose Goforth of Riceville; four grandchildren, Garrett Herschel Blake Goforth, Brianna Riley Irvin, Chuck David Goforth and Butch Johnathon Goforth; one sister and husband, Beaulah and J.W. Coffman of Athens, and their children, Johnny Coffman and Cheryl Merriman; many loving nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Hardy C. "Pop" Coker, 97, of Athens, and formerly of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, Oct. 6, 2004, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

A native of Brass-town Bald, N.C., he was a son of the late Duffey and Ella Plott Coker, and was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Ethel Roberts Coker. He was the last of 13 brothers and sisters from Brass-town Bald, N.C. He was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church for more than 40 years and most recently moved his membership back to East Athens Baptist Church, where he regularly attended. He was an avid antique automobile collector, having instilled in his three sons the love of vintage cars. He was an avid gardener, loved his animals and driving his golf cart.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Lillian Coker of Chattanooga, Bob and Linda Coker of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Bill and Kay Coker of Athens; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Pete Mullins officiating.

The body will be in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

Rev. Ben Keith Sitzler, 84, of Madisonville, preacher of the gospel, loving, faithful and devoted husband, precious daddy of nine children, went home to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army with the 34th Infantry Division. During his service life, he trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior and walked with Him for 60 years. For 30 years, he was a preacher of the gospel and for 12 years he pastored Mt. Calvary Southern Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon. From 1993 to 2002, he served as a volunteer missionary to the Ukraine, making nine trips to do the work of evangelism and missions. He was a member of Hopewell Springs Baptist Church for the past 12 years and was retired from Athens Products after eight years. He was an avid farmer and was a son of the late Chance and Verna Sue Land Sitzler. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sally Jane Sitzler; one great-granddaughter, Megan Self; two sisters, Mildred Rogers and Kathlene Lester; two brothers, Ford and Wayne Sitzler; and his stepmother, Ola Mae Stewart.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Madalene Watson Sitzler of Madisonville; six daughters and sons-in-law, Verna and the Rev. Doug Alexander, Brenda and Joe Dotson, Kim and Don Henderson, Dot and Joel Watson and Toni and Marty Coffelt, all of Madisonville, and Donna and Rodney Eaves of Benton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Keith and Judy Sitzler of Athens, and John Sitzler and fiancée, Julie Jenkins, both of Madisonville; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one stepsister, Willie Bryson of Athens.

He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Bishop; and one uncle, Kenny "Pee Wee" Colbaugh.

He was a resident of McMinn County for most of his life and was a son of the late Ed and Grace Womac Coffey. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert; and one sister, Blanche. He was a well-respected mechanic for many years, working for both General Motors and the Chrysler Corporation in New York and Tennessee before retiring.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dorothy Marie Compson Coffey of Riceville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Mary Whitmore of Canadaigua, N.Y., Wayne and Tina Crank of Housham, Pa., David and Toni Crank of Akron, Ohio, and Dwayne and Tara Coffey of Watertown, N.Y.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Teresa and David Bivens of Loudon, Brenda and Tony Cordero of Oaks Corners, N.Y., and Ann Thompson of Sweetwater; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Ronnie and Judy Coffey of Murfreesboro, and Art Coffey of Athens; one sister, Lillie Teaster of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

He loved all kinds of sports and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, the VFW Post No. 5146 and was an employee of Heil Trailer International. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army, and was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Moses.

Willard Emmitt McKinney, 76, of Athens, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Cleveland.

A native of Chattanooga and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Pleas E. and Haley Hyde McKinney and was a member of Short Creek Baptist Church. He was a man with a quiet, gentle spirit and he loved his friends and family. To have known him was a blessing to your life. After a long road with cancer, he passed into death quietly and with amazing grace. He was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter, Melanie McKinney; and two sisters, Opal King and Blanche Norwood.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Thurman McKinney of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Wanda McKinney of Athens; two grandsons and spouses, Mark and Melissa McKinney and Craig and Amy McKinney, all of Athens; two great-grandchildren, Seth Emmitt and Bethany Ann McKinney; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Lousia McKinney, Fred and Vaudene McKinney and Scott and Carolyn McKinney, all of Athens; and one sister, Mabel Dennis of Riceville.

She graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1989 and received her bachelor’s degree in French and her master’s degree in education from East Tennessee State University. She was formerly employed at McMinn County High School and was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church in Kingsport. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Verdie Aslee Ghorley, and was a member of Tranquillity Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Ratledge; and two brothers, Dick and Lillard Ratledge. He was with the Thomas A. Hamilton Masonic Lodge of Riceville and had served in the U.S. Army National Guard for three years. He retired from the Athens City School System after 23 years.

Betty G. Rush, 83, of Rome, Ga., died Thursday morning, Oct. 7, 2004, at a Rome hospital.

A native of Etowah, she was born March 13, 1921, and was a daughter of the late Sidney Ralph and Valeria Keith Rice Garwood. She had been a resident of Rome, Ga., since 1959 and was a member of Second Avenue Baptist Church. She was employed for several years as a switchboard operator for the Rome News Tribune and also at Daniel’s Funeral Home and Jim Rush Funeral Home in Cleveland. More recently, she had been employed by the Rome Police Department as a school crossing guard at the Dean Street/East Central crossing and earlier at the Turner McCall Blvd., East Ninth St. and East Second Ave. crossing for East Rome Elementary School. She was preceded in death by one brother, Doug Garwood; and her husband, J.L. "Shorty" Rush, on April 12, 2002.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison and had served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was associated with the Dupont Corporation for more than 30 years until his retirement.

"Dart" Wilson; her mother, Betty Vaughn, who left her early in life to be with the Lord; her mother that raised her, Nellie Miller; one daughter, Helen Millsaps; three brothers, D. W. "Buddy" Wilson, Clyde Wilson and Robert Garland Wilson; four sisters, Sally Goforth, Belle Brown, Sarah Jane Porter and Lillie Ernie Wilson; and one grandson, George Michael Bunch.

A native of Monroe County and a resident of McMinn County for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Hoyt and Stella McCart Plemons and was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Faye Shelton; one granddaughter, April Diane Curtis; one sister; and five brothers. She was a member of Woodward Avenue Church of God and, along with her husband, owned and operated the Englewood Chair Company for many years.

A native of Mount Vernon, and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Jessie and Flora Colake McConkey and was saved and baptized as a teenager at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Monroe County. He retired from Royal Crown Bottling Company after 38 years of service and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Flora Eaton McConkey; one son, Ross A. McConkey; one grandson, Larry R. McConkey; three brothers, Ralph, Ollie and Robert McConkey; and three sisters, Viola McConkey, Hazel Davis and Bertha Chambers.

A son of the late William McKinley and Dora Forrester Long, he was a wonderful, caring and loving husband and father and an honest, hard-working man who had a firm belief in God. He was preceded in death by two children, Leona Long and Douglas Long; one sister, Anna Ruth Wilson; and four brothers, Billie, Edward and Bob Long and Basil Rutledge.

Cook High School alumnus and has served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the decoration of the victory medal during his tour of duty. His extensive employment history included the Ranch Restaurant, Cook’s Box Company, the Robert E. Lee Hotel, Burkett’s Restaurant, Burlington, the Tennessee Wesleyan College cafeteria, TVA, Plastic Industries and Quintin’s.

He was an avid sports enthusiast, which included playing softball, football and baseball. His favorite hobby was cooking and he also served as scoutmaster to Boy Scout troops. He was a committed Christian and was an ordained minister, evangelizing in prisons, locally and abroad, including traveling to Mexico.

In 1952, he married Minnie Marie Smith and was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Jessie Mae White, William Long, Stanley Long, Henry Long, Raymond Long, Eileen Long, Joann Long and Frances King.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was preceded in death by her parents, Burkett and Sally Evans; her husband, Frank S, Harrison; three sons, Freddy Wayne, Charles Burkett and Stanley Harrison; one brother, Roy Evans; and one sister, Cathleen Lyles.

Mark M. Tabor, 90, of Etowah, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004 at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home in Etowah.

A native of Princeton, Ky., and a resident of Etowah for most of his life, he was a son of the late James A. Taylor. He was active in several organizations after his retirement and was a former Lion’s Club member. He was a member of the Woods Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for a number of years, along with his wife, Helen. He headed the SETA workers in the restoration of the old L&N Depot in Etowah and he loved working in his yard, planting roses and banana trees, and his parrot, Clyde. He retired from L&N Railroad as Trainmaster in Atlanta, Ga. in February 1979 and was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Caleb D. Tabor in March 1992.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael C. and Janet Tabor of Etowah; four grandchildren and spouses, Anthony M. and Penny Tabor of Louisville, Ky., David M. and Mary Tabor of Virginia Beach, Va., Alicia and Roger Highers of Nashville, and James W. and Pat Tabor of Jackson; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren

Gussie Ann "Pee Wee" Cannon, 67, of Plant City, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in Tampa, Fla.

A native of Athens, she resided in the Tampa Bay, Fla. area for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker, a Christian by faith and a loving wife, mother, and nanny. She was preceded in death by her 23 year old son, Ricky James; and her 49-year old son, David Lee.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmie L. Cannon of Plant City, Fla.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jammie S. Phyllis Ann Ables Parker, 56, of Hickman, Ky., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Jackson-Madison County Hospital.

A native of Athens and a graduate of McMinn County High School, she was director of nursing at North west Correction Center in Tiptonville. She was of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include her husband, James Parker; her parents, James and Velma Ables of Athens; one daughter, Shannon Parker of Martin; two stepdaughters, Kim Miller of Union City, and Lorie Parker of Cordova; one stepson, Mike Parker of Vinita, Okla.; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Cliff Roderick of Athens, and Nancy and Dave Churm of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Alma W. Dawson, 77, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at her home, after a lengthy illness.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was employed by Carolyn Chenille of Sweetwater and Niota Textile for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Dawson Jr.; her parents, Walter and Sally Mae Guinn; two brothers, Everett Guinn and Norman Guinn; and one sister, Viola Guinn.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Beverly Dawson and Fredy "Gene" and Betti Dawson, all of Philadelphia; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Earl Barnes of Philadelphia; one brother, Dewain Guinn of California; five grandsons; four granddaughters; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives.

Mark M. Tabor, 90, of Etowah, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004 at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home in Etowah.

A native of Princeton, Ky., and a resident of Etowah for most of his life, he was a son of the late James A. Taylor. He was active in several organizations after his retirement and was a former Lion’s Club member. He was a member of the Woods Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for a number of years, along with his wife, Helen. He headed the SETA workers in the restoration of the old L&N Depot in Etowah and he loved working in his yard, planting roses and banana trees, and his parrot, Clyde. He retired from L&N Railroad as Trainmaster in Atlanta, Ga. in February 1979 and was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Caleb D. Tabor in March 1992.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael C. and Janet Tabor of Etowah; four grandchildren and spouses, Anthony M. and Penny Tabor of Louisville, Ky., David M. and Mary Tabor of Virginia Beach, Va., Alicia and Roger Highers of Nashville, and James W. and Pat Tabor of Jackson; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Frank Speer; one nephew, Tony Speer; and three brothers, Egbert, J.R. and Donald Crittenden. She was a member of Eastanallee Baptist Church, where she had been a faithful member for 71 years, and was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Eastanallee Home Demonstration Club for 20 years and had been associated with Penney’s and Miller’s Department Stores, Cherokee Hardware, Henry-Wilson Jewelry Store and the Sterling Dress Shop, for over 40 years.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Parkinson of Riceville, to whom she had been married 66 years; one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Sandra Parkinson of Cleveland; one grandson and wife, Tracy Scott and Pamela Parkinson of Knoxville; one granddaughter, Dana Lyn Parkinson of Johnson City; her twin brother, Mansel Crittenden of Torrington, Wyo.; four sisters-in-law; and nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Eastanallee Baptist Church with the Rev. Oran Creasman and Mickey Basham officiating. Burial followed in Eastanallee Cemetery.

JoAnn Elizabeth Rollins Liner, 34, of Cleveland, and formerly of Athens, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at her residence.

She was a 1988 graduate of McMinn County High School and attended Trinity Chapel in Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Homer and Mammie Pearl Taylor; and her paternal grandparents, Willie and Pauline Plemons Rollins.

Survivors include two daughters, Brook Liner Huff of Athens, and Nikki Liner of Cleveland; her mother and stepfather, Ann and Jim Huff of Athens; her father and stepmother, Billy Joe Sr. and Carolyn Rollins of Cleveland; one sister, Lisa Decker of Cleveland; one brother, Billy Joe Rollins Jr. of Benton; three stepsisters, three stepbrothers; and several nieces and nephews.

Nena Bell Bunch Howard
Died: 10-23-2004

Nena Bell Bunch Howard’s sunrise was Dec. 3, 1900 in Cleveland and her sunset was on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Dayton, Ohio.

A daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Bunch, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Howard on Feb. 18, 1968. She married him in July 1926 and to this union was born two loving and devoted daughters, Nena Bell Howard Magowan and Johnnie Mae Howard Posey.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University in Nashville and earned her master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City, N.Y. She did post-graduate work at Peabody University in Nashville, Gould Academy in Massachusetts and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a teacher in Athens, Sweetwater, Madisonville and Cleveland.

She was a volunteer at Bradley Memorial Hospital, Blood Mobile, Tele Ministry, Red Cross, Bradley County Nursing Home, United Way, March of Dimes, Multiple Sclerosis Society, she was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years, chairperson of the Membership Committee for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a member of the Cleveland Day Care Board, League of Women Voters, she was voted Teacher of the Year for 1965-66 by the Cleveland Jaycees, and chairperson of the Urban Renewal Project.

She was the first person, white or black, to be employed in Eleanor Roosevelt’s program for unemployed teachers and she also assisted in drives to promote citizen registration and voting in local, state and national elections.

She professed religion at a very early age and became a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she remained a devoted, loyal member until her health failed. She would tell everyone, "if you put God first, then believe and have faith, you will always come out ahead." Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23 .

She traveled extensively and one of the highlights of her life was to visit Jerusalem, the place where Jesus walked, and to pray at the Wailing Wall. It was Jesus, of course, who was the source of her inner strength.

Survivors include two beloved daughters and one son-in-law, Nena Bell Howard and William Magowan of Dayton, Ohio, and Johnnie Mae Howard Posey of Chicago, Ill.; two granddaughters, Brenda and Deborah; two great-grandchildren, Dameon and Ramon; three great-great-grandchildren, Diamond, Jaquan and Taishanna; one nephew and wife, Howard and Evelyn Neal of Cleveland, Ohio; and many cousins, friends and admirers.

Funeral services will be noon Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cleveland with Pastor Edward S. Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery.

The body was in state at Patton Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Friday, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be after 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Chastain; her husband, Charles Waldrop; one son, Max Chastain; two brothers, Tom Small and Heiskell Small; and two sisters, Edna Small and Myrtle Lou Blevins. She was a lifelong member of Rogers Creek Baptist Church and was a former employee of Van Raalte Hosiery Mill. She was a member of the Jolly Bells Home Demonstration Club and was an active member of the McMinn Senior Activity Center.

Donald Gene Brown, 53, born and raised in Athens, died Sunday evening, Oct. 24, 2004, in Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga, Ala.

He professed a hope in Christ at a young age and joined Cox Chapel AME Zion Church in Athens, and later joined Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Alpine, Ala., where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He attended Cook High School and McMinn County High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970. He was preceded in death by his father, Archie Brown Sr.; two brothers, John and Archie Brown Jr.; and two sisters, Delilah Johnson and Mary Ann Fuller.

Elizabeth Foree Browder, 80, of Sweetwater, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

A native of Pocahontas, Va., she was a daughter of the late Dr. Carey O. and Martha Colston Foree, and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Browder, on Oct. 18, 1986. She and her late husband owned and operated the Homestead Farm on the McMinn-Monroe County line. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater and had attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Ward Belmont College in Nashville and was a graduate of Sweetbriar College in Virginia. She was an avid tennis player and was a tennis instructor until her retirement.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Oliver Browder of Sweetwater, and Dr. Carey Foree Browder of Nashville; three granddaughters, Julia Browder of Arden, N.C., and Lauren Browder and Lindsey Browder, both of Washington, D.C.; one grandson, Joe Stuart Browder of Arden, N.C.; one great-grandson, Charles Colton Browder of Arden, N.C.; one niece, Eleanor Peebles of Knoxville; and one nephew, Dr. William E. Walter "Walt" Edward Tittle Jr., 44, of Johnson City, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at his residence.

A native of Johnson City, he was a son of Walter Edward Sr. and Janice Foxx Tittle. He was a member of Marvin’s Chapel United Methodist Church, and was a partner of Tittle and Tittle, Inc. He was past president of the Johnson City Area Homebuilders Association and former president of the Johnson City Jaycees. He served on the Johnson City Planning Commission and was proud of going through the Johnson City Leadership 2000. He was a member of the Johnson City Elks Club; vice-president of the Washington County-Johnson City Shrine Club; a member of the Jericho Shrine; a Master Mason, Lodge No. 486, Johnson City; a member of the Thomas E. Matson Chapter No. 131; the Holston Council No. 101; and the Watauga Commandery No. 25. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Eric Tittle.

Ralph J. Wilkins, 72, of Athens, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A veteran of the U.S. Army (1952-54, 557 Trans. Co., Ft. Eastis, Va.), he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Marie Wilkins.

Edward L. Webb, 77, husband of Martha Webb, of the Goodsprings community in Etowah, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2004, near his home.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Lake and Betty Williams Webb. He was a member of Goodsprings Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by one brother, Fleates Webb; and two sisters, Marie Shugart and Leota Parrott.

Survivors include one son, James Webb of Athens; two grandchildren, Tim and Kendra Webb, both of Athens; one great-granddaughter, Madalynn Webb of Athens; one brother and sister-in-law, G.W and Ovaline Webb of Etowah; and several nieces and nephews.

Christopher C. "Sonny Boy" Douglas, 80, a lifelong resident of Etowah, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

He was a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church in Etowah, where he served on the trustee board, and was a member of Boaz Lodge No. 318. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, where he received several decorations and citations. He retired from the Bowater Corporation with over 25 years of service and was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Geneva Douglas; and one brother, William "Bill" Douglas.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Neil Douglas; two devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Robert Scruggs of Athens, and Gennelle and Shaun Bazel of Stockbridge, Ga.; three grandchildren, Dustin, Destiney and Ashley; one sister and brother-in-law, Rosalee and Joseph Armstrong; sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee Douglas, Louise Cardin, Rosa Lee Colbert, Christine Lowry and Elizabeth Moss and husband, Bill, all of Etowah, and Charlene Scruggs of Athens; one devoted niece, Frances Williams of Etowah; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends.

Martha Sue Webb, 74, wife of Edward L. Webb, of the Goodsprings community in Etowah, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct., 27, 2004, near her home.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Nellie Mae Zimmerman Bates. She was a member of Goodsprings Baptist Church and a member of the Etowah Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Kenneth, Jackie and Thomas Bates; and two sisters, Katherine Bates and Edna Ray Bates.

Roy Dean Ricker, 49, of Decatur, died recently at his residence.

A native and lifelong resident of Meigs County, he was a son of the late Grady Franklin Ricker. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Betty Irene Ricker; and an infant brother, Sam Ricker Jr.

Ernest Darlen Scott, 83, of Decatur, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of Goodfield United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Operating Engineers and the American Legion. He was an avid sportsman and loved watching his grandchildren play sports, hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Allen and Ella Lena Thompson Scott; one sister, Cora Bess Moon; one grandchild, Jason Kelly Scott; two great-grandchildren, Allison Gail Scott and Landon Chase Scott; and one son-in-law, Terry Irvin.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Lee Petitt Scott of Decatur; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Scott, Wayne and Carolyn Scott and Larry and Melissa Scott, all of Decatur; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet Irvin, Ginger and Jerry Harris and Beth and Eddy Miller, all of Decatur; one sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and David Hannah of Chattanooga; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ruth Parker Gilley, 84, of the Cumberland Hills community near Englewood, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at NHC Health Care of Athens.

She was a native of Chickamauga, Ga., had lived in Florida for many years and had lived in the Athens area for the past nine years. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Chickamauga for several years and also worked at Burdines in West Palm Beach, Fla., for more than 20 years. She was a daughter of the late Tom E. and Lillie Stanfield Parker, and was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Fred W. Gilley; three brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Tommye and Herschel Hollingsworth of Englewood, and Roxie and Donald Merchant of Port Orange, Fla.; four grandchildren, Bobby Fowler of Dallas, Texas, Herschel Hollingsworth Jr. of Athens, Rene Blaine of Clarksdale, Miss., and Fred Hollingsworth of Knoxville; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruzeene Smith of Chickamauga, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond Cecil Sprinkle Sr.
Died: 10-31-2004

Raymond Cecil Sprinkle Sr., 92, of Etowah, died Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 2004, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.

For the last two years of his life he had two very special and devoted caregivers, Jim Brittain and Todd Gochenour, who enabled him to remain at home, as well as the services of Adventa Hospice of Athens and the caring hands and compassionate hearts of their employees for nine months. A native of Buncombe County, N.C., he was a former resident of Kingsport, Elmira, N.Y., Winchester, Va., Rochester, N.Y., and a resident of Etowah for the past 27 years. He was the son of the late Rev. Alfred Perry and Mary Bell Sprinkle, and was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jessie Lee Johnson Sprinkle; two brothers, William T. and the Rev. Joseph A Sprinkle; three grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn and Sondra Elaine Hood and Keith Evon Gochenour; and one great-grandson, Jason Whitney Cassada. He was of the Baptist faith and was an employee of the Roy B. Moore Trucking Company, with headquarters in Kingsport, beginning as a driver. In 1954, he was elevated to manager of a Relay Station in Elmira, N.Y., later as a terminal office manager and dispatcher in Winchester, Va., and was appointed a company vice president and dispatcher in Rochester, N.Y., with an office located within the Eastman Kodak Complex. He retired in 1977 after 31 years of dedicated service.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty Hood and Marie and Jim Brittain, all of Etowah; two sons and daughters-in-law, R.C. Jr. and Nancy Sprinkle of Woodstock, Va., and Jimmy and Donna Sprinkle of Herndon, Va.; eight grandchildren, Deborah Cassada, Ramona Lash, Rhonda Mullen, Todd Gochenour, Becky Combs, Chuck Sprinkle, Dianne Sprinkle and Jimmy Lee Sprinkle II; six great-grandchildren, Amy Marie and Christopher Mullen, Jami and Trenton Lash and Crystal and Camille Cassada; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Horace E. and Edith Sprinkle of Kingsport, and John R. and Mildred Sprinkle of Asheville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be Wednesday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

There will be no formal visitation.
