William Luther "W.L." Perkinson
Died: 08-31-2004

William Luther "W.L" Perkinson, 81, of Athens, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 31, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Luther W. "Luke" and Leta Casteel Perkinson, and was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Lou Partain Gamble. He was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and regularly attended the First Baptist Church of Athens. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, in the 320th Bomb Group-443 Squadron, and attended many of the annual reunions. He was a member of the Sweetwater Valley Life Underwriters Association and was retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company. He was a past member of the Rotary Club and the Jaycees. He was the longtime scorekeeper for the McMinn County Cherokees football team and a member of the Cherokee Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Bohannon Perkinson of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Bo and Lynn Perkinson of Athens; one daughter, Ann Perkinson of Knoxville; one granddaughter, Lindsay Perkinson of Washington, D.C.; one grandson, Tyler Perkinson of Athens; and one sister, Verna Peck of Orlando, Fla.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Mike Womack officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Norwood, Carl Hutsell, Sam Feezell, James Burris, Tyler Perkinson, Jerry Partain, Billy Partain and Johnny Coffman.

James Edward Moore, 75, of Niota, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at an Etowah health care facility.

He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Niota, where he had served on the deacon board, and was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lula Moore.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 19 years, Ella Mae Moore of Niota; one son and daughter-in-law, Clinton Ray and Pharriest Moore of Lebanon; three daughters and one son-in-law, Ester Moore and Tonya and Raymond McDermott, all of Niota, and Kathleen Gray of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; one stepdaughter and spouse, Nancy and Tony Moore of Niota; seven stepsons and four spouses, J.B. and Carolyn Smith of Madisonville, David Smith, Chris Smith and Marcus Smith, all of Athens, Lloyd and Victoria Smith of Cleveland, and Timothy and Angela Wilkerson and Terrance and Susan Smith, all of Niota; one sister, Mary Wilson of Sweetwater; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Bob Moore of Athens, and Ulysses and Louise Moore of Niota; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one devoted sister-in-law, Catherine Moore of Niota.

Edgar A. Davis, 70, of Niota, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 1, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

He was a retired engineer for Taylor Implement Company and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Borden Davis of Niota; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Sandra Davis and Ricky and Lisa Davis, all of Niota; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Robert Turner of Niota, Karen and Larry Knox of Sweetwater, and Donna Trew of Ten Mile; five grandsons, John Davis and his wife, Tammie, Eddie and Jason Wyrick and Kirkland and Keegan Knox; four granddaughters, Melissa Carpenter and her husband, Bobby, Alessi Turner, and Amy and Keri Davis; one great-grandson, Noah Davis; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Gail Davis; and three sisters, Lena Thompson, Edith Newberry and Martha Anderson.

Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Loudon Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Moore officiating.

Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sweetwater Memorial Garden for the graveside service with military honors provided by VFW Post 5156.

Herman Larry Stiles, 66, of Calhoun, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004.

A son of the late Claude and Flora Hood Stiles, he was a native of McMinn County and a former resident of San Diego, Calif. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a dispatcher for the Charleston Police Department and Amtrack.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Alice Degroote Stiles of Calhoun; one son, Michael Larry Stiles of Calhoun; three daughters, Stacy McNeely and her husband, Danny Mowery of Charleston, Pamela Hackett of San Bernardino, Calif., and Sheryl Dillion of Arrowhead, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Stiles Family Cemetery with Danny Mowery, Michael McNeely, Michael Stiles, Eric Stiles, Mike McNeely and Kevin Chin serving as pallbearers.

Sanford Oren Ware

Sanford Oren Ware, 89, of Athens, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Horace and Elizabeth Gentry Ware. A member of East Athens Baptist Church and a former Sunday school director, he enjoyed singing and leading singing at the church and the McMinn Senior Activity Center. He had been a member of various quartets and was a retired supervisor at Mayfield’s Dairy after 35 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Thelma Mae Gravitt Ware of Athens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Carole Ware of Athens, Glenn and Prissey Ware of Athens, Ga., and Larry and Terry Ware of Knoxville; one brother, Paul Ware of Athens; six grandchildren; five great-granchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Pete Mullins and the Rev. Arliss Slack officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Bill Cox, Johnny Cox, Don Gravitt, Tommy Sanders, Allen Swafford and Donald Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Leon Roy Sunday School Class of East Athens Baptist Church.

Mary M. Letner Gunter, 75, of Ten Mile, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

She was a daughter of the late Charley and Maud Clark Letner, and was a member of Ten Mile Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis J. Gunter; one brother, Elmus Curly Letner; and two baby brothers, Billy and Lester Letner.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Thomas Maynor Malone. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Bellfount Baptist Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Maria G. Graveside services were 10 a.m. Sunday at Eastanallee Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Dishman officiating.

Mary Ethel Lance Bettis, 79, of Philadelphia, was called home to be with Jesus on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Sweetwater Hospital.

A daughter of the late Alex and Susie Williams Lance, she was a member of High Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Carl "Buddy" Lance Jr.

A native of Bradley County and former resident of Monroe County, he was a son of the late Henry Joseph and Josephine Bruce Murphy, and was preceded in death by an infant son, W. J. Murphy; five brothers, Sam, Sanford, Tom, Boyd and Lloyd Murphy; and two sisters, Cora Bowman and Gracie Murphy.

Dollie Byrum Long, 91, of Athens, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004 , at her son’s residence.

A native of Waverly and longtime resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Lillie Milford Byrum, and was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Long; and one son, William H. Long. She was a former employee of the Dollar General Store and she enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James Alfred and Gail Long of Charleston, and Danny Ray and Robbie Long of Englewood; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Mae Rigney of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Walker and Blassie Haney Walker; and special aunt and uncle Oda Haney Bradford and William J. Bradford.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Georgia and Donald McNabb of Riceville; one son and daughter-in-law, Elige W. Blair, Jr. and Marion Blair of Knoxville; one brother, Laylie Mills of Oviedo, Fl.; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Joseph Norman Swartz, 93, of Calhoun, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, 2004, at Life Care Center of Athens.

A native of Quebec City, Canada, he was a son of the late Nathan and Victoria Tritt Swartz. He was a graduate of McGill University where he received his PhD. He was associated with Bowater as chief chemist beginning in 1954 until his retirement.

Survivors include one brother, Mel Swartz, M.D., of Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada; and two special friends, Lois Coe of Athens, and James Lee of Calhoun.

Snoddy Jr.; and one brother, Kenneth Godfrey.

Daniel "Dan" C. Holt, 74, of Delano, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 14, 2004, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

A native of Iuka, Miss., and a resident of McMinn County for the past 51 years, he was a son of the late James and Minnie Wright Holt. He was a member of Coghill Baptist Church, the American Legion, the Alhambra Shrine – Etowah Lodge No. 653, the Scottish Rite and the Chilhowee Rod and Gun Club. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, and was retired from Hiwassee Land Company as a contractor. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Wilson, J.R., James, Johnny and Bobby Holt; and one sister, Gertrude Ballard.

Keith Wayne Roberts, 47, of Ames, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at his home in the arms of his loving family.

Born on April 10, 1957, in Cleveland, to Mary Ellen McGuire and Gilbert Roberts, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was united in marriage to Judy Phillips on Aug. 14, 1987, and he, Judy and their children have lived in Ames, Iowa, since 1990. He attended Iowa State University, pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, and worked for Swine Genetics International, owned USAI Lab Supplies and managed ITSI. He was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, and was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ellen Roberts; and one sister, Tammy Butler.

Keith loved his family and always put them first in his life. His passion was music and he enjoyed songwriting and singing. He was a wonderful father and a loving husband. He is irreplaceable and unforgettable in our hearts.

A native and lifelong resident of Etowah, he was a son of the late Wade and Alice Stewart Miller. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Miller; three brothers, Hubert Miller, Eugene Miller and William Miller; two sisters, Rosella Rayburn and Beulah Sue Rich; and one son-in-law, Charles Green.

Ineda Godfrey Snoddy

Ineda Godfrey Snoddy, 68, of Etowah, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 14, 2004, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

A native of the Cambria community near Etowah, she was a daughter of the late Frank Godfrey and Pearl Morrow Godfrey Machen. She was a member of East Etowah First Church of God and was a member of the Eastern Star, Scottsboro, Ala. chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.R. Snoddy Jr.; and one brother, Kenneth Godfrey.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Snoddy of Etowah; two sisters, Cora Anne Machen Scott of Waynesville, N.C., and Mary Jane Machen Davis of Etowah; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Doyle Lloyd and the Rev. David Watson officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday and proceed to Delano Cemetery for the 11 a.m. burial.

Ralph Curtis Allen, 65, of Athens, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late William H. "Shorty" and Sue Lusk Allen, and was preceded in death by one brother, James Morris "Morris" Allen, on Sept. 29, 1999; and his stepmother, Alta Isabell Bohannon Allen, on Oct. 28, 1997. He was a former employee of Bowater Southern Paper Corporation and a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Denise Jones Allen of Athens; two daughters, Casey Wheaton and Brandi Haid, both of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Max and Cam Allen of Sevierville; five grandchildren, Leah Wheaton, Bradley Haid, Cameron Allen, Corey Allen and Callie Allen; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Deborah and George Carriker of Gatlinburg, Joyce and Robert Powers of Athens, and June Samples of Sevierville; two sisters-in-law, Melissa Pritt and husband, Sherman, of Athens, and Linda Allen and her children, Elisha Elliott, Mark Allen and Scott Allen, all of Athens; two aunts, Rue Shamblin and husband, Ralph, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Edith Allen of Athens; special caregiver, Karen Crowder of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Edward Moore, 72, of Sweetwater, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, surrounded by his family at ParkWest Hospital in Knoxville.

He was a member and deacon of Old Sweetwater Baptist Church and was a retired employee of X-10 Oak Ridge. He was a member of Sweetwater Masonic Lodge No. 292 F&AM, and was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosa Lee Purdy Moore.

Mae Hester Malone, 96, of Harriman, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at the home of her niece and caregiver, Mildred Standridge, in Decatur.

A member of Trenton Street Baptist Church, she worked as a private-duty nurse in the Roane County area for many years. She had a very loving spirit and opened her heart and home to many children. Her faith was very strong and she loved the Lord completely. In spite of serious health problems, she was still tending her own yard as recently as a year ago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zack and Rosie Lackey Hester; her husband, William Rankin Malone; five sisters, Martha, Julia, Cynthia, Bessie and Kelly; and four brothers, Bill, Leonard, Taylor and Sam.

Survivors include one sister, Ada Collins of Sweetwater; one niece and caregiver, Mildred Standridge of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

She loved gardening, cooking and canning for her family and friends. She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Glenlock Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, George May; and three brothers, Elmer, Escoo and Curtis Glandon.

James Hugh Ross
Died: 09-24-2004

James Hugh Ross, 83, died at his residence in Etowah on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004.

Born on Jan. 15, 1921, at Cole’s Crossing in Fannin County, Ga., he was a son of the late Rosa Davis and George Everett Ross. He moved to Etowah as a small child when his father was transferred there by L&N Railroad and he resided in McMinn County for the remainder of his life.

He proudly served his country as the radio operator on a B-17 Bomber in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. While on a bombing mission in North Africa, his plane was shot down over Tunisia on Jan. 3, 1943. He was immediately captured by the Germans and spent the remainder of the war in Nazi prison camps, much of that time being spent at the infamous Stalag XVII-B in Krems, Austria. He was liberated on May 3, 1945, by forces of the 3rd U.S. Army under the command of General Patton.

Shortly after his return to his home in the Goodsprings community, he met and soon thereafter married his wife, Helen Ruth Bryan. They would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Oct. 21, 2004.

A lifelong Republican, he was elected as the McMinn County Property Assessor in 1948 and served one term in that office. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed by President Eisenhower as the postmaster of the Englewood Post Office, where he served until his retirement.

He resided in Englewood for many years, where he and his family attended the Englewood First Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school for many years and served as a deacon. After his retirement, he and his wife moved back to Etowah, where they became active members of the Etowah First Baptist Church. He is remembered by many friends from both of those communities and from both of those churches.

He was a charter member of the Englewood Lions Club and was recently honored for being a member of the Englewood Manilla Lodge No. 633 for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Bryan Ross; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda Ross and Paul Baxter of Knoxville, and Cathy and Doyle McNabb of Cleveland; two sons, Carroll Ross of Etowah, and Johnny Ross of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Mary Helen Smith, Julia Smith, Michael Smith, Catherine Maples, and Elizabeth Torbett and husband, Jonathan; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Torbett and Makayla Maples, daughter of Adam Maples; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marie Malone, Edna and Ed Davis and Phyllis and Andy Leslie, all of the Goodsprings community, and Genevie Reed of Rockford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Edna Ross of the Goodsprings community, and Wayne and Bess Ross of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; special friend, Wayne Quinn, husband of Hazel Quinn, who is the sister of Helen Ross; several other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday at Bordwine Funeral Home with his pastor, Shaun King, of the Etowah First Baptist Church, and his former pastor and friend of many years, James A. Hoyal, officiating and concluding with the Celebration of Life video. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Tuesday and proceed to Green Hill Cemetery for the 10 a.m. graveside service, which will conclude with the White Dove Liberation Ceremony.

Pallbearers will be Rixey Quinn, James Bryan, Adam Maples, Michael Smith, Jeff Davis and Joshua Ross.

Martha Dixie Culvahouse, 84, of Athens, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Wellington Place.

She was a member of Madisonville Presbyterian Church and was a school teacher for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Dixie Culvahouse; five brothers, Bogges Culvahouse, Dr. Bruce Culvahouse, Dudley Culvahouse, Chet Culvahouse and Robert Culvahouse; and four sisters, Nelle Magill, Anna Ruth Gardner, Edna C. Evans and Jane C. Gordon.

She was a member of Madisonville Church of Christ, enjoyed painting and was a soccer mom. She was loved by her family and will be missed by those who knew her well.

Robert Floyd "Senator" Upshaw
Died: 09-25-2004

Robert Floyd "Senator" Upshaw, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the Hospice House in Fresno, Calif., after a long illness.

Born June 2, 1918, in Etowah, he was a son of the late W.T. and Bertha Upshaw, and attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He attended public school in Etowah, graduating from Etowah High School in 1937, and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College. He was an outstanding punter for both his high school and college football teams. He was a veteran of World War II, having joined the U.S. Army in 1941, serving as a Sergeant Clerk at Ellington, Pinedale and Victorville Army Air Force Fields, and being discharged in 1945. He worked for the city of Fresno, Calif., as a maintenance supervisor and, after retiring, he became the manager of the D&D Ranch of Madera, Calif., until 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Juanita Miller Upshaw; four brothers, Albert, G.L., Jack and Thomas Upshaw; and one sister, Frances Gilliam.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dawna and Don Kale of Madera, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Monty and Susan Upshaw of Tillamook, Ore.; two grandsons, Christian and Karlton Ellinger, both of Madera, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Ellinger of Madera, Calif.; one brother-in-law and wife, Frontz and Phyllis Miller of Beaverton, Ore.; two sisters, Ruth Duffy of Knoxville, and Bertha Dean Baker of Etowah; and several nieces, one nephew and a special friend, Zona Cline of Fresno, Calif.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Neptune Society of Central California in Fresno, Calif. Burial will be later at Mount Hood, Ore.

Katrina Rhea Harper, 56, of Sweetwater, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at a Maryville hospital.

She was a member of Madisonville Church of Christ, enjoyed painting and was a soccer mom. She was loved by her family and will be missed by those who knew her well.

Survivors include one son, Chad Harper of Sweetwater; her parents, James R. "Jim" and Comer Dell Fain Phillips of Sweetwater; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sonya Miller of Sweetwater, and Jimmia and Charles Lawson of Ten Mile; one nephew and his wife, James and Crissy Lawson of Sweetwater; one niece and her husband, Lynette and Spencer Coon of Sweetwater; one great-nephew, Justin Lawson of Sweetwater; two great-nieces, Jessie Coon and Tori Coon, both of Sweetwater; and two very special friends in Christ, Kirby and Pam Hines.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at Madisonville Church of Christ.

David Symon Smith, 64, formerly of Athens, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at a Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

He had for worked for many years in the Athens area as an auto mechanic and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Smith; and one sister, Peggy Smith Burke.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Zelma and Thomas Dickerson of Athens; three children and two spouses, Teresa and Roger Barnett of Cleveland, David Alvin Smith of Knoxville, and Vincent Edward and Shelia Smith of Athens; two grandchildren, Misty Dawn Smith and Mathew Caleb Barnett; three brothers and one sister and their spouses, Gladys McCowan of Niota, and Alfred Smith, Richard and Tina Smith and Glenn and Martha Smith, all of Athens; aunts and uncles, Rachael Fuqua and Reava Moore, both of Chattanooga, Eldridge Moore of Meigs County, Fred Smith and wife, Zella, of Niota, and Oggie Mae McDermott of Athens; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Vant Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Flat Cemetery in Decatur.

Robert Chris Wilson, 39, of Benton, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004.

He was baptized in the Church of Christ and was a 1983 graduate of Polk County High School. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and owned and operated "The Computer Guy" in Etowah. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Jackie Moss; and his grandparents, Glenn and Emma Lene Wilson.

Survivors include his wife, Tina White Wilson; his parents, Ted E. and Linda Faye Moss Wilson of Benton; two sons, Daniel and Cody; two stepsons, Rance White and Ryan Russell; one sister and brother-in-law, Heidi and Matt Mckeown of Mystic, Conn.; two brothers, Ted "Pig" Wilson of Benton, and Henry "Hank" Wilson of Delano; his grandfather, Henry Moss of Delano; and nieces and nephews, Carlissa, Makylla and Landan Meneses, Wyatt Wilson, Jackson Wilson, Rachael Mckeown and Garrett Mckeown.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late William Alexander and Edna Mae Shoemaker Gennoe, and was preceded in death by two daughters, Vickie Darlene Gennoe Jessen and Sharon Annette Gennoe Lynn. He was a member of Knoxville Avenue Baptist Church and was a former employee of Donco Logging Company.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Patricia Louise Hicks Gennoe of Niota; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte Ann and Jerry Wallace and Angie G. and Jimmy Lankford, all of Niota; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony Lee and Pamela Gennoe of Niota, and Ricky Joe and Felicia Gennoe of Knoxville; one brother and sister-in-law, Ray Edward and Sue Gennoe of Decatur; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Wilma Gennoe of Decatur, Wanda and E.L. Don E. Watkins, 56, of Etowah, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, 2004, at his residence.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late J.T. Watkins. He was a member of Delano Baptist Church and was employed by Olin Chemical Company. He served six years in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hicks Watkins of Etowah; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Russell Rayburn of Etowah, and Debbie and Robert Martinez of Houston, Texas; one grandson, Tyler Rayburn; his mother, Ruby Watkins of Etowah; one cousin and spouse, Karen and Steven Newman of Delano; one aunt, Shirley Watkins Coates of Modesto, Calif.; and several other aunts and cousins.

Sarah L. Comerford Claudon, 75, of Dentin Hills in Columbia for the past year, and a resident of Athens for 30 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at her residence.

A native of Jacksonville, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Dunniway, and the wife of the late Thomas Comerford and the late L. Gerald Claudon. She was a retired newspaper business owner.

Survivors include five sons and four daughters-in-law, Jeff and Susan Comerford of Clark County, Ill., Todd Comerford of DuPage County, Ill., Conn and Linda Comerford of Athens, Dann and Terry Comerford of Niota, and Tedd and Lisa Comerford of Columbia; two granddaughters, Cassidy and Peyton Comerford; six grandsons, Clark, Ty, Brett, Heath, Mitch and Preston Comerford; and one sister, Margaret Niccum of Columbia.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Clark, Ty, Brett, Heath and Mitch Comerford, Mike Tanzi and Bob Williams.
