Mr. Barnes was disabled and a member of Finger Church of Christ. He is preceded in death by his father, Clifford Barnes. He is survived by his mother, Athlee Barnes of Henderson; two sisters, Ruby Faye Russom of Bethel Springs and Eula Mae Joyner of Finger; one brother, R. C. Barnes of Bethel Springs. Mr. Been was a retired machinist and a member of Millington First United Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Hardy and Laura Mae Martin Been. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Tina Mae Sullivan Been; four daughters, Barbara Jean Means of Millington and Sharon Gale Ross of Millington, Linda Sue Ridley of Drummonds, and Janet Larraine Tippman of South Haven, MI; one sister Carol Holmes of Bloomingdale, MI; two brothers, Martin Been of Plainwell, MI, and John Been of Chino Valley, AZ; 22 grandchildren; 35 gr-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Been were held Thur. Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Selmer with Travis Sheppard officiating. Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Parvin Taylor and one sister, Irene Asbill. She is survived by one son, Norman Taylor of Selmer; two sisters, Rachel Moore of Selmer and Ruth Cunningham of Pickwick Dam; one brother, John H. Marler of Michie; two grandchildren, Jana Mauldin and Heath Taylor; five gr-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Taylor were held Mon. Mr. Poindexter was a logger and a member of Michie Church of God of Prophecy. He was preceded in death by one sister, Debbie Poindexter Smith. He is survived by his wife, Angie Poindexter of Michie; one daughter, Taylor Lane Poindexter of Guys; his mother, Wilma Goins Robinson of Williamsburg, KY; his father and step-mother, Ocie and Imogene Poindexter of Michie; one sister, Nickie Napier of Adamsville; one brother Timmy Poindexter of Selmer; his maternal grandparents, Bill and Gladys Goins of Williamsburg, KY. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Rienzi, MS Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer “Bill” Smith. She is survived by one son, Roy Ponds of Adamsville; one sister, Ester “Kate” Karen Hollin of Memphis; one brother, Warren “Ed” Edwin Garrard of Memphis; and three grandchildren. Mr. Walker was a retired route salesman and a member of the Selmer First United Methodist Church. He had also served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents John F. and Ruby Surratt Walker. He is survived by his wife Diane Walker; four daughters, Susan Hendrix of Selmer, Mollya Likens of Memphis, Amanda Ingle of Bethel Springs, and Polly Jordan of Selmer; one son, Jeff Walker of Ramer; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Howard was a truck driver leasing with East-West Motor Freight and a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert John Howard. He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith Howard; one daughter, Theresa Jennings and husband Larry of Selmer; his mother, Jewell Blanton Howard of Michie; one brother, Ronnie Howard of Michie. Burial followed at the Lebanon Cemetery in Michie. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RUFUS PAUL HURLEY of Stantonville, 84, died Sept. 3, 2001 at Tri-County Convalescent Home in Adamsville of cancer. Mr. Hurley was retired from DOT State of Tennessee and a member of the Meeks Grove Freewill Baptist Church where he was the song leader. He was a member of Tennessee River Boys for 30 years. He was a Tenor and High Alto and he played the harmonica. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Peyton and Pearl Wardlow Hurley; one son, George Bradford Hurley; one grandson, Nickey Allen Hurley. He is survived by his wife, Essie Mae Nixon Hurley; one daughter, Loretta Emmons of Michie; two sons, Dean Hurley and Billy Joe Hurley both of Stantonville; a sister, Jewell Humphrey of Shiloh; a brother, John Hurley of Memphis; six grandchildren, Shannon Emmons, Glen Paul Hurley, Randy Joe Hurley, Jeffery Lynn Hurley, Tim Hurley and Kay Ervin; eight gr-grandchildren, Shay Emmons, Shayna Emmons, Jonathan Bratton, Jordan Hurley, Samantha Emmons, Kasey Hurley, Dustin Hurley and Cade Weaver. Mr. Garner was disabled and a member of Finger Baptist Church and an avid sports fan. He was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Clayton Garner. He is survived by his father, Haven Garner of Finger; two sisters, Linda Hines and Lettie Faye Hines both of Memphis; three brothers, Michael Garner of Paris, Phillip Garner of Bethel Springs, and Dwight Garner of Finger; along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Garner were held Sun., Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Selmer with Billy Joe Stewart officiating. Burial followed at Lake Hill Memory Gardens in Bethel Springs. Pallbearers were Guy Garner, Johnny Garner, Neal Lynch, Wayne Clayton, Marcus Anderson, and Jimmy Essary. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JERRY LEE NORTHAM of Selmer, 61, died Sept. 3, 2001 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson of cancer. Mr. Northam was an engineer at Diversified Refrigeration, Inc. and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Selmer. He had also served in the U.S. Army.. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Northam and a brother, Charles Northam. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Northam; three daughters, Lori Hansen of Greenville, MI, Lisa Wernet of Fenton, MI and Leslie Garrison of Dyersburg; one son, LeRoy Northam of St. Paul, MN; his mother, Helen Northam of Fremont, IN; two sister, Ruth Sandusky of Van Etten, NY and Ellen Wilkinson of Three Rivers, MI, and eleven grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Northam were held Thur. Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Selmer with Dr. Paul Mullikin officiating. Burial followed at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Greenville, MI. C. MATLOCK were Sun., Aug. 26, 2001 at 3 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel in Selmer. Burial followed at Mars Hill Cemetery. Mr. Matlock was a Baptist. He was a farmer and steel construction worker. He died Saturday at Trenton Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Edgar C. and Jennie Ann Hardin Matlock. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, and one sister, H. T. Matlock, J. R. Matlock, of Dyer, Harold Tucker Matlock of Nashville, Tressie Mae Griswell of Selmer, and also an infant son. Survivors are two sisters, and one brother, Mildred Griswell and Ruth Allison of Selmer, Wison Matlock of Bethel Spring, his wife, Mary Ruth Crowe; a son James C. Matlock; and a granddaughter, Tanya Matlock of Dyer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VADA MARIE BRYAN of Selmer, 89, died Sept. 12, 2001 at the home of her daughter of heart failure. Mrs. Bryan was a homemaker and a member of Fourth Street Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Bryan; one sister, Edna Maddox; one brother, Kenneth Ward. She is survived by two daughters; Myrle Patrick of Ramer and Joy Pearcy of Stantonville; one son, Aubrey Bryan of Selmer; seven grandchildren; twelve gr-grandchildren. Mrs. Cartwright was retired from Hall Tex and a member of Central Assembly of God Church in Ripley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Cartwright. She is survived by two daughters, Judith McCarthy and Betty Clark, both of Ripley; four sons, Harold Wayne Cartwright of Ripley, Everette Cartwright of Halls, Edward Cartwright of Millington, and Ted Cartwright of Alamo; one sister, Sadie Pets of Booneville, MS; three brothers, Arnold Goodrum of Memphis, Lonnie Goodrum of Pennsylvania and Clarence Goodrum of Bolivar; along with fourteen grandchildren and nine gr-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Cartwright were held Wed., Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Garner Funeral Home. Burial followed at Liberty Cemetery in Bethel Springs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARLIN JUNIOR BAKER of Adamsville, 78, died Sept. 10, 2001 at Magnolia Regional Healt Center in Corinth, MS of a heart attack. Mr. Baker was a maintenance supervisor for Piccadilly Cafertia and a United States Army Veteran. He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Jean Brown of Adamsville and Anita Sue Farris of Memphis; two sons, James Edward Baker and Andrew Ray Baker, both of Ft. Worth, TX; seven sisters, Vergie Harville, Earline Foster and Chole Rose, all of Michie, Jessie Neill and Jane Austin, both of Savannah, Ann Johnson of Luka, MS and Fran Nelms of Naples, FL: three brothers, Joe Baker of Thomson, GA, Paul Baker of Jacksonville, FL, and David Baker of Michie; along with five grandchildren, six gr-grandchildren and two gr-gr-grandchildren. Memorial services for Mr. Baker were held at Shackelford Acton Chapel in Acton with cremation after the service. HOLLINGSWORTH of Millington, 72, died Sept. 10, 2001 at Memphis V.A. Hospital of heart failure. Mr. Hollingsworth was C.O. / 02 retired Army. Born in McNairy County, he was a twenty-three year Army Veteran and a Purple Heart (Korean War) recipient. He served in Japan, Germany, and Vietnam. He was also a heart transplant survivor of 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Liane Phuhl Hollingsworth; one son, James Roy Hollingsworth of Memphis; two sisters, Dora Reed of Danville, IL, and Delores Davis of Tallahasse, FL; a brother, James Ray Hollingsworth of Ramer; and one granddaughter, Jamie L. Hollingsworth of Memphis. Funeral services for Mr. Hollingsworth were held Fri., Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. Millington Chapel at Munford Funeral Home. Mrs. White was a homemaker and a member of Counce Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence White and her parents, Daily and Mattie Samples. She is survived by two sons, Alton White of Fredricktown, MO and Eugene White of Festus, MO; a sister, Terri Sills of St. Louis, MO; along with six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and sixteen gr-grandchildren.
