Mr. McCann was retired from the Tennessee State Highway Department in Jackson and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Moore’s Chapel Methodist Church in Milan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Marion and Celia Weaver McCann. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Plunk McCann; three sons, Sargent McCann and his wife Cindy, Jerry McCann and his wife Judy, and Gary McCann and his wife Kathy, all of Jackson; two sisters, Georgia Huey of Fairfield, AL, and Ava Lee Kaufman of Memphis; seven grandchildren, Kevin McCann and his wife Cindy, Kristi McCoy and her husband Jared, Kimberly McCann, Philip McCann, Melissa McCann, Kyle McCann, and Andrea Winchester and her husband Lee; and three gr-grandchildren, Braden and Brianna McCann and Anna Claire Winchester. Funeral services for Mr. McCann were held at 1 p.m. on Sat. Dec. 29 at Shackelford Chapel in Selmer with Minister Clarence Hare officiating. Burial followed at Lake Hill Memorial Garden. The family asks that memorials be made to Moore’s Chapel Methodist Church, 158 Germantown Road, Milan, TN 38358. ----------------------- CARLOS GLENN McDANIEL, former mayor of Adamsville, TN, died Dec. 31, 2001 in Nashville, TN where he had made his home with his children for the past three years. He was born Jan. 15, 1906 in Dyer County, son of William Thomas and Clara Virginia McDaniel. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shackelford Funeral Home in Adamsville, TN. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. 9 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. 1 p.m. Thursday. A graduate of Memphis State University, he was a school teacher (having taught at Adamsville High School for many years) and an artist. He was active in the Art Guild in Savannah, TN and participated in many art shows in the area. A member of Adamsville Baptist Church, Mr. McDaniel taught a men’s Sunday School class for many years. Because of his influence as a teacher and civic leader in the community, in 1990, the city honored him with “Glenn McDaniel Day.” One of his strongest character traits was that of an encourager. For many years he was a Scout Master with The Boy Scouts of America, Troop #234. Mr. McDaniel was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge #338. Preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Shands McDaniel, he is survived by a daughter and son and their spouses: Glenda Dillingham (Don) of Mt. Juliet, TN, Mike McDaniel (Betty Sue) of Nashville, TN, three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five gr-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Art Guild of Savannah, TN or The Gideons International. ---------------------------- J.W. “PETE” AUSTIN of Finger, 69, died at his home near Finger Sat. night, Dec. 29, 2001 of cancer. Mr. Austin was born and reared in McNairy County, near Finger, the son of the late Gilbert Paul and Elsie Barham Austin. He attended schools in McNairy County and in 1953 entered the U.S. Army and served state side until 1955. IN 1955 he was married to Mary Travis of Henderson and they made their home in Joliet, IL. He was very active in the U.A.W. He retired in 1985 and they moved back to finger. He is survived by his wife Mary Travis Austin of Finger, and a step-daughter Frances Marie Gilliard of Joliet, IL, and two sisters, Jean Dunaway of Lexington and Shirley Burkhead of Henderson. He has two step-grandchildren, Lisa Simpson and Scott Tidwell, and two step-gr-grandsons, Andrew and Kevin Simpson, all of Joliet, IL. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tues. Jan. 1, 2002 at the Chapel of Casey Funeral Home with Bro. John Heitz officiating. Burial followed in the Henderson City Cemetery. ---------------------------- LEXIE ANN KERBY of Adamsville, 95, died of heart failure Dec. 28, 2001 at Tri-County Convalescent Home in Adamsville. Mrs. Kerby was a homemaker, and a member of Mars Hill Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Kerby. She is survived by one son, Mr. Billy Joe Kerby of Adamsville. She had two grandchildren, Theresa and Kay Kerby, both of Nashville. Funeral services for Mrs. Kerby were held Sun., Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel in Adamsville. BOLTON of Houlka, MS, formerly of Adamsville, 76, died Dec. 23, 2001, at his residence in Houlka, MS. Mr. Bolton was retired from the military. He was a U.S. Navy and Air Force Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Gena JarreLL Bolton of Houlka, MS; four daughters, Sharon Conley and Shirley Adams, both of Houlka, MS, Billie Weisenfels of Dickson, and Cindy Jones of Tupelo, MS; one brother, Johnny Bolton of Crump; and three sisters, Nell Springer of Leapwood, Janice Austin of Bartlett, and Bobbye Spain of Denham Springs, LA. He had seven grandchildren and eleven gr-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Bolton were held 11 a.m. on Thurs., Dec. 27 at Shackelford Chapel in Adamsville. Mr. Tull was a retired farmer. He was a member of 4th Street Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Media McIntyre Tull, and one daughter, Barbara Elaine Tull on May 10, 1965. He is survived by his wife, Loreda Kernodle Tull and several nieces, and nephews. Mr. Christopher was a retired farmer. He was a member of Mt. Vinson United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eber and Cora Sweat Christopher, and his wife. Hazel Surratt Christopher. He is survived by one son, Billy Earl Christopher of Adamsville; one daughter, Glenda Wilson of Adamsville; two brothers, Warren Christopher of Adamsville and Keith Christopher of Memphis; and two sisters, Ava Pyron of Adamsville and Wilma Ruth Taylor of Jackson. Mrs. Lewis was a retired LPN for Hardin County Hospital. She also worked as a nurse for Maple Hill Nursing Home in Selmer and Tri-County Nursing Home in Adamsville. She was a member of Crump Pentecostal Church. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Lewis; and two daughters, Judy Umphrey of Savannah and Lena J. Sowell of San Antonio, TX. She had three grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Lewis were held at 3 p.m. on Sat., Jan 19 at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah. Mrs. McCullar was a retired beauty shop operator and owner of Iona’s. She was a member of the Hair Dresser’s Association and the Junior Civic League. She attended Selmer First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Sansom and Lue Pearl Halliburton Sansom; and her husband, Samuel N. “Jack” McCullar. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Dillard of Annandale, VA and Ellen King of Selmer; and one son, Samuel N. McCullar, Jr. of Selmer. He was Pentecostal in belief. Mr. Raines was a retired farmer, a member of the McNairy County Farm Bureau and the McNairy County Farmers Co-Op. He was a Methodist by faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy Alexander and Elizabeth Bearden Raines; his wife, Irene Marie Wright Raines, and one brother, Roscoe Raines. He is survived by five daughters, Sue Crow of Booneville, MS, Judy Daniel of Somerville, Gail Franks of Savannah, June Carlin of Selmer, and Janie Raines of Corinth, MS; and three sisters, Hazel Whitaker and Melba Ruth Treece of Stantonville, and Edna Mae Tacker of Adamsville. Burial followed at Mt. Vinson Cemetery. ---------------------------- WILLIAM T. BARRETT of Selmer, 72, died on Jan. 15, 2002 at her residence. Mr. Barrett was a migrant worker fruit picker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Turner W. and Ora June Head Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Barrett; three sons, William Lee Barrett of Jonesboro, AK, Danny Ray Barrett of Dyersburg, and Buford Will Barrett of Nashville; five daughters, Sue Climber and Glenda M. Eastwood of Dyersburg; Linda F. Wilson of Alamo, Nita Volner of Milan, and Delene E. Wilson of Lake City, FL; three brothers, Clifford Barrett of Selmer, Huey Barrett of Nashville, and Elmer Barrett of Alamo; and three sisters, Opal M. Barrett and Bessie M. Burial arrangements were by Shackelford Funeral Home. ---------------------------- ADDIE MAE CAMPBELL, age 76, died Tues., Jan. 15, 2002 at Jackson General Hospital. Mrs. Campbell was born and reared in McNairy County, TN daughter of the late Isaac and Rosa Miles Campbell. She attended school in Hardin County and was married to Jesse Campbell in 1944. They made their home in Enville. Mr. Campbell was killed in a care accident in 1967. She was a member of Enville Church of Christ since 1954. Mrs. Campbell was the Mayor of Enville for six and a half years, and an Alderman for Enville for nine and a half years. Mrs. Campbell worked at the Chester County Nursing Home as a Registered Nurse and held many other jobs in community service, which was helping others in or during sickness. She retired as plant nurse from Aqua Glass in Adamsville. She is survived by two daughters, Genny Hollin of Milledgeville and Kay Ritter of Enville; one sister, Gladys Wade of Enville; four grandchildren, Jesse Pruett in the U.S. Navy, Alicia Pruett of Sardis, Melinda Ritter Johnston of Enville, and Melissa Ritter Holder of Nashville; three gr-grandchildren, Dylan Johnston, Angela Pruett and Emilie Holder. Proceeded in death by a daughter, Nancy Pruett in 1996. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 17, Leon Johnson Funeral Home chapel, with Bro. Jason Haygood officiating. Mr. Hampton was a retired farmer. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Hampton and Frances Fullington Hampton; his first wife, Edna Robinson Hampton; two daughters, Mary Frances King and Loretta Hampton; one son, Paul Wayne Hampton; one grandson, Artis Weeks; four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Maudelia Hampton of Adamsville; two daughters, Doris Weeks and Cynthia Godsey two step daughters Martha Green and Joyce Gibbs, all of Adamsville; two sisters, Helen Cagle of Savannah and Minne Lennon of Gadsden; and three brothers, Carl Hampton of Lubbock, TX, Lonnie Hampton and Edgar Hampton, both of Jackson. He had 15 grandchildren and 21 gr-grandchildren. Burial followed at Rocky Knob Cemetery. ---------------------------- ARLIE JOHNSON of Bethel Springs, 59, died Jan 21, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Johnson was a night watchman for Classic Petroleum. He attended Beauty Hill Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. D. and Julie Henry Johnson; three brothers, Eugene, Jesse, and Johnny B Johnson; and one sister, Floelle Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Coleen Stansell Johnson; a daughter, Tammy Holloway of Henderson; a son, Tommy Johnson of Bethel Springs; and three sisters, Mary Wallis, Annie Mae Dillon, and Maggie Lee Mitchell, all of Selmer. Mr. Cobb died Tues., Jan. 15, 2002, at his residence in Plainview, TX He was born Nov. 22, 1907, in Bethel Springs, TN to John Henry Cobb and Martha Lela Ammons. He married Dorothy Aleen Robison on Dec. 16, 1928 in Jackson, TN. Mr. Cobb moved from Tennessee to Pampa, TX in 1928; moved to Halfway in 1938 and moved to Plainview in 1947. J.D. was an ordained deacon in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In addition to farming in the Plainview area for many years, he also worked as an independent landsman. His wife, Dorothy Cobb, a son, Robert Lee Cobb, a daughter, Peggy M. Johnston, a grandson, Mark Johnston and two brothers, Wesley Ewing Cobb and John Paul Cobb, preceded him in death. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James D. Jr. and Joan Cobb of Midland, TX; eight grandchildren, seventeen gr-grandchildren and four gr-gr-grandchildren. Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and attended First Presbyterian Church in Selmer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Van Buren and Carrie Haynes Wardlow; and her husband, Ezra A. Barnes. She is survived by one daughter, Nelda Barnes Evans of Jackson; one son, Jerry Robert Barnes of Memphis; and one sister, Martha Bess Howell of Middleton. She had two grandchildren, Traci Evans Carney and Cory Barnadon Evans, both of Jackson. Services were held at 3 p.m. on Wed., Jan 16 at Shackelford Chapel, with Minister David Bubb officiating. Mrs. Coln was a retired assembly line worker for Cleve-Pack Container Corp. She was a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, and of the General Forrest Chapter of The United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryant and Mary Huggins, and by her husband. She is survived by her daughter, Kerry Sue Street of Cordova, and her sister, Alta Pickering of Selmer. She had two grandchildren, Judy Street Bragg and Mark Street, both of Cordova. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison LaFayette and Mettie Ingle Weeks. She is survived by her husband, Robert F. Goad, and her daughter, Janet Sparks, both of Selmer. She had two grandchildren, Lee Richard Sparks of Abingdon, VA and Rob Sparks of Jackson. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery near Selmer. ABNER WILLIAM (A.W.) DeBERRY, JR. of Shiloh, 83, died Jan. 21, 2002 at Hardin County General Hospital in Savannah. Mr. DeBerry was a maintenance employee with Shiloh National Military Park for 25 years. He was a member of Michie Primitive Baptist Church, the VFW, and he was a U.S. Army and Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jordan DeBerry of Shiloh; two sons, Robert Larry DeBerry and James Keith DeBerry, both of Shiloh; and three sisters, Virginia Bolding of Knoxville, Myrtle Jeffreys of Memphis, and Ruth Bowen of Guys. Mrs. Dickey was a homemaker. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Selmer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver B. Dickey; one sister, Willie Mae Thomas; and two brothers, W. G. Chambers and J.R. Chambers. She is survived by her mother, Daisy Chambers of Selmer; one daughter, Doris English of Michie; two sons, Terry Dickey of Yuma and Donnie Dickey of Bolivar; three sisters, Margaret Michael and Genive Baggley of Birmingham, AL, and Edna Griffin of Selmer; one brother, J.B. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a retired truck driver and World War II Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Smith Kirkpatrick. He is survived by one son, Joe Kirkpatrick of Savannah; three daughters, Becky White, Carol Phillips, and Susan Warren, all of Savannah; and one sister, Alice Kinney of Savannah. Burial followed at Savannah Cemetery. ---------------------------- MARTHA HAMILTON McIVER, formerly of Jackson and Adamsville, 85, died Sat., Jan. 26, 2002 at Claiborne and Hughes Health Care Center in Franklin. Mrs. McIver was a former bank and Singer Company employee. She was born in Adamsville, and educated in the McNairy County School system. She worked at a bank in Memphis and the munitions plant in Milan during World War II. Fore the remainder of her years, she worked for the Singer Co. in Memphis, Atlanta, and New York, until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank O. and Alberta Duncan Hamilton; two sisters, Iliene Hamilton Richards and Irma Hamilton; and one brother, Fred Hamilton. She is survived by three brothers, J. T. Hamilton of Ashland, MS, Jim Hamilton of Overland Park, KA, and Frank Hamilton of San Francisco. CA. Mrs. Hutcheson attended Michie First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Lessie Smith Hopkins; her husbands, Alfred Wardlow and Lincoln Hutcheson; one son, Bobby Dean Wardlow; on brother, Earl Hopkins; and four sisters, Vella Mae Hopkins, Minnie Bell Jenkins, and two who died as infants.
