She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Minnie Comer Droke; her husband, Clifford Barnes; one sons, Clifford Ray Barnes, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Faye Russom of Bethel Springs and Eula Mae Joyner of Finger; one son, R. C. Barnes of Bethel Springs; one sister, Amy Dallas of Bethel Springs, and one brother Aaron Droke of Kentucky. She had eight grandchildren, seven gr-grandchildren, and four gr-gr-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Burial followed at Mars Hill Cemetery. ---------------------- JEWELL DERRYBERRY MOORE of Wanasoga Community, MS, 77, died Feb. 11, 2002 at McNairy General Hospital. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Faith Baptist Church and a retired seamstress with Corinth Manufacturing. She was born in Ramer, to Alva and Pearl Darby Derryberry. She was preceded in death by her parents Alva D. and Pearl Darby Derryberry; husbands, Clay Childress, John VanDiver, Robert Davis and Charles Ellis Moore; daughter Janice Childers; and grandson Charles Donavin Moore. She is survived by five sons, Kenny Moore and wife Evonne of Corinth, MS, Billie Childress, Tony Davis and wife Peggy, Charles Moore, Alvia Moore and wife Patricia, All of Chewalla; one step-son Jerry Moore and wife Donna of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Joyce VanDiver Taylor and husband Donnie of Corinth, MS and Susie Clingen and husband John of Tishomingo, MS. Burial followed at Indian Creek Cemetery in Chewalla, arrangements by Memorial Funeral Home. ---------------------- GENE OWENS of Selmer, 54, died Feb. 17, 2002 at Methodist LeBonheur-McNairy County. Mr. Owens was a retired, self-employed General Contractor. He was a Jehovah Witness, member of the National Barrel Horse Association, a Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hansel and Annie Lee Vetito Owens; and two brothers, Carman and Billy Owens. He is survived by his wife, Mary Thacker Owens; two sons, Eric Owens and Toby Owens and wife Tammy, all of Selmer; two sisters, Christine Passmore of Stantonville and Nadine Wagoner of Brookland, AR; seven brothers, Marlin Owens of Walnut, MS, David Owens of Ramer, Joe Owens of Selmer, and Alvin Owens, Junior Owens, Larry Owens, and Butch Owens all of Booneville, MS. Burial followed at Lake Hill Memorial Garden. ---------------------- VIRGIL RUTH BOLLINGSWORTH BLACKWOOD of Adamsville, 87, died of heart failure on Feb. 16, 2002 at Methodist Healthcare in Selmer. Mrs. Blackwood was retired from Garan Mfg. and Modern Florist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Audrey W. Blackwood. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Ashe of Stantonville, and Mary Linda Crosby of Parsons. Services were held on at 3 p.m. on Feb. 18 at Adamsville Funeral Home, arrangements by Shackelford Funeral Directors-Savannah. Burial followed at Bethlehem Cemetery. ---------------------- HOWARD MACK CARLIN, 56, of Hornsby, died Feb. 14, 2002 at his home. The husband of Beulah Doak Carlin, who survives, he was a timber cutter for 35 years. He was born on Dec. 24, 1945, in Hornsby, son of the late Plez Howard Carlin and Zora Ann Kirk Carlin and lived most of his life there. He served in the National Guard from 1965-72 and was a Baptist in belief. Services were 12 p.m. Feb. 16 at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel in Bolivar with Harold R. King officiating. Burial was in Eureka Cemetery in McNairy County with Bill Hubanks, William Carlin, Cliff Hannah, Wesley King, Glen Edmonds and Garan Carlin serving as casket bearers. In addition to his wife, whom he married on Sept. 19, 1981, survivors include a stepson, Lee Henley of Henderson; a sister, Gladie C. Eiassen of Indialantic, FL; four nieces; a nephew; three gr-nieces and four gr-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Claunch. ---------------------- IMA LORAYNE McCLAIN of Selmer, 80, died Feb. 13, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. McClain was a homemaker and worked at the Brown Shoe Factory and the flea market, and collected glassware. She was a member of Landmark Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Ella Hopkins; her husband, Homer Carl McClain; one son, John Tyler McClain; five brothers, Arlie Hopkins, Willie Hopkins, Benny Hopkins, Elbert Lee Hopkins, and George Hopkins; three sisters, Audrey Roach, Bernice Sawyers, and Faye Moore. She is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth Thomas of Guys, Martha Jane Glidewell and husband Windell, Linda Casey and friend Leon Goodin, and Pat Smelser and husband Matt, all of Selmer; and two sons, Robert Hershel McClain of Cedar Lake, IN. She had 22 grandchildren, 32 gr-grandchildren, and 3 gr-gr-grandchildren. Mrs. Herring was a homemaker. She was a Pentecostal by faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Louvernie Webster Burkeens; her husband, Rufus B. Herring; one son, Rufus L. Mr. Reynolds was a retired set-up processor at General Electric. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Mae Jernigan Reynolds; and two brothers, Cletus Reynolds and Clifford Reynolds. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Reynolds; three daughters, Barbara Garner of Finger, Penny Kennedy and Tammy Hutcherson, both of Bethel Springs; two sisters, Martha Kudera of Hammond, IN, and Dorothy Peoples of Bethel Springs; three brothers, Raymond Reynolds of Ramer, Hershal Reynolds of Hammond, IN, and Lavon Reynolds of Bethel Springs; and four grandchildren, Clay Garner, Misti Garner, Cain Hutcherson, and Zachery Kennedy. Mrs. Hewitt was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hewitt; and her parents, Chappie D. and Lillie Bell Huggins Haddock. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Weatherford of Poplar Bluff, MO. She had seven grandchildren, eleven gr-grandchildren, and eleven gr-gr-grandchildren. JENNIFER RENEE PARSON of Guys, 18, died Thurs., Feb. 21, 2002 in Corinth, MS. Jennifer was a member of Rock Hill Apostolic Church. She was a member of the Section 1 United Pentecostal Youth Choir, Assistant Sunday School Teacher and Praise Singer. She was a Senor at Adamsville High School and a member of the Journalism Class and Nursing Class, and had plans for a career in the Nursing Field. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed worshipping God and helping others. She was preceded in death by one brother, Johnathon Wayne Parson; her paternal grandfather, Arbie Clay Parson; and an aunt and uncle. She is survived by her parents, Denny Ray Parson and Angela Rae Barber Parson, one brother, Nicholas Ryan Parson, and one sister, Michelle Nicole Parson, all of Guys; her paternal grandmother, Mary Susie Parson of Counce; maternal grandparents, Rex and Annie Barber of Mira Loma, CA; two nephews, Johnathon Lane Parson and Dusty Shawn Parrott, both of Guys; six aunts, one uncle, several cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends. Burial followed at Center Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Counce. ---------------------- BEDFORD EUGENE “GENE” YOUNG, age 77, of Selmer, TN, passed away Tues., Feb. 19, 2002 at his residence. Services will be held Thurs., Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. in the Shackelford Chapel with burial to follow in the Lake Hill Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews Bobby Franklin, Carroll Franklin, Dewey Franklin, Billy Franklin, Dennis McCullar and Roger DePoyster. Mr. Young retired from Ashby Veneering and Lumber Company in Jackson in 1985. He was a member of the Antioch Church of Christ in Ramer. He served in the United States Army during world War II as a staff sergeant and a gun and radio operator in General George Patton’s 4th Armored Division. Mr. Young was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Mr. Young was the son of the late Bedford D. and Alva Elizabeth Mathis Young of Pocahontas, TN He is survived by his wife, Lavada Kirk Young of Selmer; two daughters, Nelda Young and husband Steve, Bobbie Martin and husband William, two grandchildren, Rod Young and Kirk Young, all of Jackson; two sisters, Lorena Franklin of Hilliard, FL and Lola Williams of Middleton; and one brother, David M. Young of Marietta, GA, as well as many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mayena Newland, Jewell Lamberth and Maxillee Jones, and one brother, Robert E. Young. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of Falcon Baptist Church. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Fri., Feb. 22 at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer. Burial followed at Falcon Cemetery. --------------- ULIS ALTON SNIDER of Finger, 76, died Feb. 21, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Snider was a WW II Army Veteran. He was retired from West Jackson Baptist Church as Maintenance Chief. He was born and reared in Chester County, Roby Community, son of the late Lafayette “Fate” and Maudie Tucker Snider. He attended schools in Chester County and in 1944 he entered the U.S. Army and was injured in training and was medically discharged the same year. He was married to Lucy McIntyre in 1949 of Finger and they made their home in Nashville and Lebanon, where they lived from 1949 until 1975. They moved to Jackson in 1975 and lived there until 1978. Mr. Snider was the Chief Maintenance for West Jackson Baptist Church. In 1978 they moved to Finger. Mr. Snider retired in 1990. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd Snider, Floyd Snider and Joe Neal Snider. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Gayle McIntyre Snider; four sons, Ronald Snider of Beech Bluff, Frank Snider of Columbia, Danny Snider of Lebanon, and Kenneth Snider of Mount Dora, FL; two daughters, Nancy Holsonback of Enville and Martha Browne of Columbia; three brothers, Glen Snider of Henderson, Raymond Snider of Guntersville, AL, and Buford Snider of Finger; and three sisters, Bernice Walker of Memphis, Nell Taylor of Jackson, and Linda Mae Graves of Ashland City. He was a member of Curtis Hill Church of God of Prophecy. He was a World War II Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents Dumas Pinkney and Grace Hornbuckle Williams; one son, James Mickey Williams; one sister, Aline Russom; and four brothers, Herbert Williams, Ernest Williams, Alva D. Williams, and Henry Williams. He is survived by his wife, Louise Williams of Selmer; and one brother, John L. Williams of Arlington, TX. Mr. Nixon worked as a Foreman for TVA for 30 years. He was born in Adamsville and was a member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for 40 years. He was also a member of Saltillo Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, and a life member of V.F.W., where he was a Quarter Master for 32 years. He was also a volunteer fireman for 15 years, a Hardin County Commissioner for 11 years and 5 months, and a U.S. Army Veteran World War II 3rd Army 94th Infantry Division. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Stanfill Nixon of Morris Chapel; two daughters, Charlotte Webb of Henderson and Ann English of Hohenwald; two sons, Danny Nixon of Haynesville, LA and Tommy Nixon of Enville; three sisters, Sara Cunningham of Morris Chapel, Jo Wicker of Jonesboro, AR, and Brenda Hanna of Milledgeville; and one brother, Ray Nixon of Adamsville. Mrs. Bryant was a retired machine operator of Garan, Inc. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Start Adamsville Chapter and of Michie First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas and Ethel Hatcoat Byrd; her husband, Thomas Woodrow “Boney” Bryant; three sisters, Carrie Byrd, Annie Petty and Irene Choate; and three brothers, Charlie Byrd, Oliver Byrd and Raymond Byrd. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Risner and Pat Hunn, both of Michie; and three sons, A. G. Bryant, Kenneth Bryant, and Mitchell Bryant, all of Michie. TAYLOR of Peoria, IL (native of McNairy County), 58, died Wed., Feb. 27, 2002 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. Mr. Taylor was an iron worker and a United States Marines Veteran. He was preceded in death by his father, Elry Sherman Taylor. He is survived by his mother, Ola Mae Kinchen Sample of Renton, WA; two sisters, Mary Lee Borden of Tennessee and Jessica Harvey of Seattle, WA; and one brother, Bennie W. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ethel Carman Jarnagin; his parents, Mr. Luther and Timey Carman Jarnagin; one sister, Mrs. Annie Lou Robertson; and two brothers, Mr. Josh Jarnagin and Mr. Rayford Jarnagin. Mrs. Bartholomew was born in Decatur County Tennessee, the daughter of the late Arlis and Della Duck Swafford. She was married to Eunice Bartholomew, who preceded her in death in 1969. Mrs. Bedwell was born on July 26, 1937 in the Mt. Gilead Community of McNairy County. Her parents were Vernie Maxine and Carl D. Wilson. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics from UT Martin. Later, she would add a Special Education Certificate. During her many years of service to public education, she truly was a teacher that put the children first. Her service included preschool 3 years, nursery school 2 years, special education 5 years, and as a food service director for 22 years. Successful special education students, now grown and productive workers are a testament to her ability to teach and to motivate. She believed and knew the students could learn and perform. Her innovativeness, coupled with a unique ability to manage, produced for McNairy County a food service program that was often copied and reproduced by others counties in Tennessee and around the nation. She is survived by her husband Robert Lloyd Bedwell of Selmer, TN; two sons and their families, Emmanuel (Mannie) Eugene Bedwell of Talbot, TN, his wife Susan Dianne Hughes Bedwell, their daughter Jennifer Rose Bedwell, and son Johnathan Lee Bedwell; Samuel (Sam) Lloyd Bedwell of Milan, TN, his wife Robin Rebecca Tant Bedwell, and their son William Parker Bedwell. He is survived by his wife, Lela Kirk of Finger; four sons, Larry Kirk of Camden, Jerry Kirk of Finger, and Harold Kirk and John Kirk, both of Lexington; two brothers, Julian Kirk of Jackson and Bobby Kirk of Cedar Grove; and three sisters, Mildred McAlexander of Cedar Grove, Orene Coleman of Milan, and Ina Langford of Union City. He had five grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sun. Mar. 31 at Chapel of Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington. Mr. Cox was a retired truck driver for Gordon Transports. He belonged to the Little Hatchie Hunting Club. He was a member of Collierville First Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juliaus Cox and Martha Elizabeth Barnes Cox. He is survived by his wife, Billie Cox of Collierville; two daughters, Paula Blalock and Sheila Holmes, both of Collierville; two sisters, Betty Cox Woodford of Savannah and Martha Cox Zellner of Memphis; and one brother, Lee Cox of Memphis. He had four grandchildren, and two gr-grandchildren. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 30 at Shackelford Funeral Home in Lexington. She attended Yellow Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur W. and Dora Louise Duffy Clement; and her husband, Robert Bly Winsett. She is survived by one daughter, Lovita Baker of Selmer; one sister, Dasy Baldwin of West Memphis, AR; two grandchildren, Cindy Kirk of Selmer and Eric Judd of Chattanooga; and two gr-grandchildren, Brittney Kirk and Parker Judd. Burial followed at Liberty Cemetery in Booneville, MS. ----------------------- KAY CHERRY MAYFIELD age 51 died Mar. 31, 2002 at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis from cancer. Mrs. Mayfield was born and reared in Chester Co. (Talley Store Community). She was the daughter of Robert and the late Joyce Wood Cherry. She attended schools in Chester Co. and graduated CCHS in 1969. She later married Rayford Mayfield of the Estes Community and they have made their home in Chester Co., where Mrs. Mayfield was a hairdresser. She also taught Sunday school in the children’s classes at Finger Church of Christ, where she was a member. Mrs. Mayfield is survived her father, Robert Joe Cherry of Henderson, her husband, Rayford Mayfield of Henderson, two daughters, Brandi Whitman of New Market, TN and Jenna Cupples of Finger, TN, a brother, Danny Joe Cherry of McNairy, TN and two sisters, Sue Ross of Bartlett, TN and Patsy Smith of Finger, TN. Memory Gardens. ------------------ CELESTE DANCER of Ramer, 78, died from complications of a motor vehicle accident on Mar. 30, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. Mrs. Dancer was a retired dispatcher with the Selmer Police Department. She was a dispatcher for 16 years. She attended Ramer First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was a Red Cross Volunteer, and a former Secretary of Fraternal Order of Police-Shiloh Lodge. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Mary Goodrum Kirk; and her husband, Herman Dancer. She is survived by two sons, Glen Dancer and wife Janice, and Charles Dancer and wife Carolyn, all of Selmer; and one sister, Eva Reynolds of Hammon, IN. She had three grandchildren: Steven Dancer and wife Tina of Madison, MS, Brian Dancer and wife Britney of Hendersonville, and Lauren Dancer of Selmer. He had two step-grandchildren: Jon Ross Reaves of Ramer and Melanie Nixon of Adamsville. She had one gr-grandchild: Taylor Elizabeth Dancer. She had five step-gr-grandchildren: Anna Grace Nixon, Kerby Nixon, Brandi Plunk, Buck Plunk and Tabitha Plunk Services were held at 1 p.m. on Tues, Apr. 2 at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, with Ministers Louis Narowetz and Richard Doyle officiating.
