He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Hughes Barnes. He is survived by his parents, Rod and Linda Hurst Barnes of Selmer; his maternal grandparents, Allie and Dolly Hurst of Selmer; and his paternal grandmother, Rowena Barnes Cupp of New Tazewell. He had a sister, Dolly Jane Barnes of Selmer. Matt was a Junior at the University of Tennessee Martin majoring in Agricultural Business. His G.P.A. was 3.56. He had done International Studies in Costa Rica. His career objective was to obtain a position in sales, marketing, or management in the swine industry or attend Law School with the intent of specializing in environmental or agricultural issues. Matt’s numerous college activities, honors and awards were: member of the 2001 Livestock Judging Team with Top Five Overall Individual Awards at Houston, American Royal, All Eastern, Georgia National and World Beef Expo, he was on All American Livestock Judging Team, Outstanding Freshman in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Finalist in the American Royal Ambassador Program, Interfraternity Council Emerging Leader Award, Alpha Gamma Pho Vice Nobel Ruler Finance, Student Government Association Senator, and Recipient of 2002 CME Pork Industry Scholarship and Minitube Scholarship. His FFA/4-H leadership activities and wards were: 2000-2001 National FFA Sheep Proficiency Winner, National FFA Agri-Entrepreneur Winner, 1999-2000 Tennessee Star Farmer, 1999-2000 FFA State Officer Team Sentinel, State FFA Proficiency Winner in Sheep, Diversified Livestock and Vegetable, Presidential Classroom Scholar, State 4-H Swine Project Winner Level I and Level II, and State 4-H Public Speaking Winner. Matt was an employee of the UTM Farm with responsibilities at the beef and sheep units and a partner in his family’s swine finishing operation. He managed his own livestock operation that included 39 commercial beef cows, 36 ewes producing show lambs, and 4 sows producing show pigs. He had a passion and the expertise for breading, fitting, and showing barrows, steers, and market lambs. He started his own club lamb production sale Blue Ribbon Club Lambs and also formed a company to market his vegetables called Blue Ribbon Produce. He was to be in Washington, D.C. on May 13, 2002, to serve as an intern for Senator Bill Frist. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sun., Apr. 7, 2002 at First Christian Church in Selmer. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Selmer, arrangements by Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer. Mr. Vickery was a retired Woods and Lands Manager for the former Tennessee River Pulp and Paper Company, where he worked for 29 years, then was an affiliate broker for Crunk Real Estate for 12 years. He was a member of the Forestry Foundation. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean Conflict; received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and Silver Star. He was a Fireman 1st Class in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member and former elder for the Savannah Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Auburn University; and a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. He was preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers, and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Davis Vickery; married Jan. 7, 1956; two daughters, Alison Vickery Shackelford and husband Robert of Selmer, and Jennifer Vickery Sanders and husband Eric of Old Hickory; three grandchildren, Preston and Autumn Shackelford and Jenna Sanders; two sisters, Waunetus (Nita) Carey of Warren, MI, and Marty Vickery of Daphne, AL; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Vickery of Walnut Grove, AL, and Mary Jane Davis of Old Town, FL. Mr. Capooth was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Nunley Capooth. He is survived by a son, William C. Capooth, Jr. of Selmer; and a sister, Thelma Ledlow of Selmer. Mrs. Hayre was manager of the Adamsville Dollar General Store and a former employee of Aqua Glass, Inc. in Adamsville. She was Methodist in belief. She was a recent heart transplant recipient (February 2002). She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth J. and Gertrude J. Johnson Foote; one sister, Doris Menter; and one brother, Royce Foote. She is survived by her husband, Richard Hayre of Adamsville; two brothers, William Foote and Kenneth Foote, both of Tampa, FL; four sisters, Barbara A. March of Adamsville, and Betty Baker, Fannie Townsend, and Joyce Houston, all of Tampa, FL. She had 24 nieces and nephews. Mr. Fryar was a member of the Harper Road Christian Church. He was a 32 Degree Mason, Shriner and a member of the MS Firefighter’s Association. He was the former owner of Polar Wave Ice & Coal Company. A member of the Corinth Fire Department from 1962-1980, from which he retired as the Asst. Fire Chief. He loved his family and friends, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and raising vegetables in he garden to share with others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Fryar and Maggie Bumpas Fryar; one brother, J.R. Fryar and wife Jenny; one son-in-law, Joseph “J.R.” Roach; a mother-in-law, Harriet Box Davis; a father-in-law, James Oscar Davis; three sisters-on-law, Billie Ruth Dixon, Mary Stout, and Alien Sheffield’ and three brothers-in-law, Lee Davis, John Arlin Davis and Herman Davis. Mr. Phillips was a farmer. He was born in Johnson County, near Moline, IL, the son of the late Samuel Phillips and Tennie Woracheck Phillips Starks. He moved to Chester County as a child, and attended Chester County schools. He lived in various places and did farm work, general labor, and drove a truck for a while. He returned to Chester County in 1985, and farmed on the Colbert until 1996 when he retired. He is survived by one daughter, Judy Phillips of Henderson; two half-brothers, John Starks of Sheffield, AL and Bill Starks of Bethel Springs; one sister, Melba McCanliss of Dallas, NC; and one half-sister, Betty Joyner of Peoria, IL. Had five grandchildren, and eight gr-grandchildren. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Wed., Apr. 3 at Casey Chapel, with Bro. Omar DuBerry officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in McNairy County. --------------------- PAUL SISK of Selmer, 80, died Apr. 2, 2002 at McNairy County Health Care Center. Mr. Sisk was retired from tannery work in Bolivar. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ted Sisk and Johnny Sisk. He is survived by his wife, Essie Sisk; a daughter, Jenise Smith of Finger; two sons, Houston E. Sisk of Bethel Springs and Virgil L. Sisk of Corinth, MS; one brother, Dewitt Sisk of Selmer; and one sister, Inez Brown. Had eleven grandchildren, and eighteen gr-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johns and Ila Mae Wren King; her husband, James Louis Robertson; two sisters, Lillie Derryberry and Icie Derryberry; and three brothers, Clay King, Will King, and Rupert King. She is survived by one son, James Robert Robertson of Ramer; three daughters, Barbara Collins of Walls, MS, Robbie Forsythe of Selmer, and Kathy Ayers of Ramer; and one sister, Faye Wooten of Memphis. Mrs. Delaney was born and reared in Madison County, AR, daughter of the late Stillie B. and Rachel Howerton McUllough. She attended schools in AR and college in Pasadena, CA. She moved to Chester County in 1995. She had made her home with her daughter Diana since 1996, due to poor health. She was a member of the Wesleyan Bible Church in Oklahoma. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Blair of Finger; twos sisters, Margie Black and Gladys Bunch, both of Tulsa, OK, and three grandchildren, William Hancock III, Dakota Ann Hancock, and Zachary Blair. Graveside services were held on at 2 p.m. on Apr. 13 at Lanes Chapel Cemetery. --------------------- PAMELA ALSUP GORDON of Amory, MS, 43, died Apr. 8, 2002 at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory. Mrs. Gordon was in the Medical Field. Her specialty was Phlebotomy. Born on Apr. 17, 1958 in Sikeston, MO, she moved to Amory at an early age and lived in Monroe County most of her life. She was a graduate of Amory High School in 1976 and attended Jackson Community College in Jackson, TN, majoring in Phlebotomy. She married Sammy D. Gordon in 1983. She was a member of the North Boulevard Christian Church for many years. She is survived by her parents, Robert M. and Janice Parsons Alsup; her husband, Sammy D. Gordon of Amory; one daughter, Carrie E. Hicks of Amory; one son, Robert Matthew Turner and his wife Ashley of Amory; two granddaughters, Amber B. Hicks and Darby B. Hicks; one grandson, Matthew D. Turner of Amory; one sister, Carolyn Logan and her husband Chad of Amory; one brother, Robert Dewayne Alsup and his wife Carla of Aberdeen; ten nephews, many cousins, and a host of church family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus Rinehart; and a son, C. F. Rinehart Jr. She is survived by a son, L. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Robert “Bob” and Synthia McNatt; her husband, Thomas Granville McCormack; five sisters, Nola McNatt, Lena Mae Dunaway, Maggie Houston, Modest Clark and Lucille Evans; and two brothers, Robert “Buster” Lee McNatt and Travis P. McNatt. Burial followed at Stantonville Cemetery. ----------------- JAMES CLIFFORD MOORE, 87, of Spring Hill, FL died Fri., Apr. 19, 2002 at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, FL The husband of Olive Crawford Moore, who survives, he was a retired crane operator for a steel mill in Michigan. The son of the late James E. and Lily Reaves Moore, he was born in McNairy County in 1914 and lived in Michigan for thirty-three years before moving to Florida to live for twenty-three years. Mr. Moore was a member of Rose Creek Methodist Church. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Mon. at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel in Bolivar with Bob Moore, Minister of the Middleton Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Reaves Cemetery near Middleton. In addition to his wife of fifty-eight years, Mr. Moore is survived by two sisters, Ruth Moore of Selmer and Carlene Jordan of Memphis. Memorial tributes may be sent to the Reaves Methodist Church. ------------------------ LEONARD “DUTCH” W. PHILLIPS of Memphis and Bethel Springs, 82, died Apr. 20, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Phillips was a bus driver (retired MATA). He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence “Hicks” and Effie Carter Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Anna L. Phillips; a daughter, Mary J. McKell of Millington; a son, Terry L. Phillips of Memphis; and two brothers, C. H. Phillips of Henderson and Louis Phillips of Scotts Hill. Worth, TX, and Mae Kirkpatrick of Dyersburg. She had thirteen grandchildren, and ten gr-grandchildren. CHRISTOPHER of Adamsville, 80, died Apr. 25, 2002 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Mr. Christopher was a former employee of Brown Shoe Co. He was a Mason-Adamsville Lodge, a member of the American Legion, and a World War II Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Pansy Christopher; a daughter, Lori Hendon of Union City; three sons, Danny Christopher, Jerry Christopher, and Ronnie Christopher, all of Adamsville; a brother, Keith Christopher of Memphis; and two sisters, Ava Pyron of Adamsville and Ruth Taylor of Jackson. Mr. Robinson worked at Corinth Brick & Tile. He was a farmer and an employee of the Coca-Cola Company, where he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lula Robinson; his wife, Minnie Robinson; two gr-grandchildren and one grandchild. He is survived by two sons, Lancy Robinson and wife Betty, and J. Mrs. Beene was a homemaker. She was born and reared in Gibson County, the daughter of the late Luther Calvin and Eva King Craig. She also lived in Arkansas as a child. She was married to Howard Beene of Finger in 1944. They made their home near Finger all of their married life of 57 years, where they farmed. She was a member of the Finger Church of Christ, and taught Children’s Sunday School class for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Beene, in Nov. 2001. She is survived by a son, Dennis Beene and wife Glenda of Memphis; two daughters, Pat Boston and husband Barry of Memphis and Linda Clayton and husband Larry of Bethel Springs; two brothers, Lewis Craig of Bethel Springs and R. T. Craig of Mobile, AL; and three sisters, Virginia Lindsey of Springville, Johnnie Claybrook of Trenton, and Betty Stultz of Bethel Springs. She had eight grandchildren and five gr-grandchildren. Mrs. Rowsey (it says Rowsey, but perhaps it should say Austin???) was a member of Olive Hill Baptist Church. She was a retired cafeteria worker for the McNairy County Department of Education. She is survived by her husband, Marvin Austin, Sr.; a daughter, Barbara Polk of Milton, FL; a step-daughter, Juanita Hill of Corinth, MS: four sons, James Edward Rowsey and Jimmy Rowsey, both of Selmer, Johnny Rowsey of Savannah, and Sammy Rowsey of Corinth, MS; a step-son, Tommy Austin of Guys; and a brothers, Lawrence Smith of Guys. Burial followed at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Eastview. ------------------------ EARLINE BOWLING McNABB, a longtime resident of Somerville and native Fayette Countian, died at 3:15 A.M. Tues., April 30, 2002 at the Spring Gate Rehabilitation Center in Memphis. She was 75 years of age and died following an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted at 2 P.M. Wed., May 1; at the Peebles Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Mike Pilcher, Pastor of the Braden United Methodist Church, officiating Interment was in the Shady Grove Cemetery at Williston. Peebles Fayette was in the Shady Grove Cemetery at Williston. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. McNabb was born Mar. 17, 1927, in the Williston area of Fayette County, the daughter of the late Jimmie Green Bowling and the late Bettie Cleo Patterson Bowling. She attended schools in the Williston and Garnett Communities and was a member of the Gallaway Baptist Church. Mrs. McNabb was a homemaker throughout her life and was a longtime resident of the Callaway and Somerville areas. She enjoyed preparing food for her family, gardening and sewing and was known by many as an excellent seamstress. Mrs. McNabb is survived by two daughters, Barbara McNabb Austin of Lakeland, Connie McNabb Dancy of Memphis, her son, Dennis Jack McNabb of Bethel Springs, three sisters, Irene Bowling McEdwards of Apopka, FL< Mary Bowling Redfearn of Somerville, Barbara Jean Bowling of Cordova, five brothers, Leland Bowling of Brownsville, Eldridge “Skin” Bowling and Smith Bowling, both of Somerville, Robert Earl “Doc” Bowling of Memphis, Jim Bowling of Somerville, six grandchildren and one gr-grandchild.
