Court Passes on two Cases

Modifies Jail Sentence of Bill Pyne on Possessing Charge

Affirms Fine in Case

Case of H.C. Shepherd On Murder Charge, is Remanded on Error

The state supreme court, meeting last Saturday, passed on two cases from the Hawkins County Circuit Court.

In the case of William Pyne vs. State, the imprisonment term for possessing intoxicating liquor was modified and the fine and costs affirmed. Although no official notice has been received here by the circuit court clerk it is thought the jail sentence has been reduced or suspended altogether.

Shepherd Gets New Trial

The case of H.C. Shepherd, convicted of killing Robert Bass, was reversed and remanded because of error in the charge of the trial court.

Mrs. Helen Price Gay

Mrs Helen Price Gay, 27, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Kyle Price, died Saturday at Orlando, Fla., after an operation. The family formerly lived here.

Her Uncles, Chris Price and Hugh Day left to attend the funeral at Orlando. She also was a niece of Mrs. Frank Gray here.


Mrs. Julia Weems

Mrs. Julia Weems, aged 55, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Onia Anderson at Greeneville Saturday morning. She is survived by her husband, George Weems of Van Hill, five daughters and three sons, Mrs. Tobe Roberts and Mrs. O.A. Mumford of Old Alberquerque, N. Mexico; Mrs. Luster McFarland of Pittsburg, Pa., Mrs. Conner Bailey of Kingsport and Mrs. Onia Anderson of Greenevile; Ulese Weems of Greeneville, Lacy Weems of Rogersville, Looney Weems of Van Hill.

She was buried Monday in the Weems cemetery at Van Hill.


Dr. A.L. Burem

Dr. A. L. Burem, 56, prominent farmer and business man, died last Friday at 9:15 p.m. at his home near here. He had been ill several months.

A long time resident of Hawkins County, he had moved to Morristown about five years ago, but was returned to his old home here several months ago when his health became worse.

Surviving are his wife; two children, Jack Burem and Mrs. John D. Jackson; two brothers, James P. Burem, postmaster at Burem, and H.S. Burem of Burem.

Funeral Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the home, Dr. R.D. Carson officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the Presbyterian cemetery.


Edward Leeper

Edward Leeper, aged 60 died on Wednesday morning at his home near Stony Point, from an operation undergone earlier in the week at Coolidge hospital in Greeneville. Funeral services were held on Friday morning at the New Providence Church. He is survived by his wife, one son, Hugh and three daughters, Laura, Eula and Annie, two brothers, Thomas and William Leeper and a sister, Carrie Leeper.
