After a protracted illness, our old friend, James D. Bloomer, died, June 8th 1878. He was born November the 11th, 1813, in the county of Hawkins, and was at the time of death, 64 years, months and 27 days old.

Mr. Bloomer joined the Baptist Church, at Blackwater, near Kyle's Ford, now in Hancock Co., in the winter of 1846, and in May 1851, he, in company with ten other members, organized Rockcastle Church, and held a deaconship in said church until his death.

He has been our nearest neighbor ever since I was a little boy; we always found him to be a good, law abiding citizen, a kind and benevolent neighbor, ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand in time of distress. He was honest and upright in all his dealings, a true, every day christian, a bright and shining Jewel, both in temple of worship and among his entire acquaintance.

We miss him as a true friend and neighbor. They miss him as an orderly member of the church he served so faithful for about 30 years, and most of all his bereaved family will miss him at home, and ever mourn his loss, which will doubtless be his eternal triump over the vexations of material strife.

I visited him occassionally during his last hours. He endured his affliction with great fortitude, and was perfectly reconciled to his fate.

May his family share the friendship of all worthy friends. J.M.K.
