AFTER LIFE'S TURMOIL

Mrs. Elise Hooten MCCALEB Dies at Home in Nashville:
Formerly of Texas and This County

   Mrs. Elise Hooten MCCALEB, 31 years of age and wife of the late Frank MCCALEB whose tragic death occurred the latter part of July, 1922, at their home at Sardis, Texas, died at her home in Nashville on Friday of last week after two weeks of illness with peritonitis.  The remains were interred at Mt. Olivet, Nashville, following services at an undertaking establishment conducted by Rev. C. M. Epps, pastor of the Grace Street Presbyterian church of which deceased was a member.  The Sunday school of the latter church, at which the two children of Mrs. MCCALEB were members, attended the service in charge of the superintendent.
   Mrs. MCCALEB was an orphaned granddaughter of the late Mrs. Xantippe McClanahan ANDERSON, with whom the early years of her life were spent at the ANDERSON family home in Anderson's Bend.  At the age of 17 years she was married to the late Mr. MCCALEB and they were parents of a three year old daughter when the family moved to Texas ten years ago.  Later a son was born.
   The death of the husband and father occurred at their home on Sunday Morning, July 29, 1922, and a coroner's verdict gave the cause of death as the accidental discharge of a pistol the unfortunate victim was in the act of cleaning on the back porch of the home.  During the early fall immediately following, Mrs. MCCALEB was charged with the awful crime and after a sensational trial was exonorated.  She immediately returned with her two children to the former home in Anderson's Bend and later came here for a residence.  After a length of time she moved to Nashville, where she has been employed and where the bereaved children have had the advantages of school and church influences as well as the devoted care of a mother.
   Deceased had been a member of the Methodist church the greater part of her life, and those who knew her best say that she was a devout Christian character, a devoted wife and mother, and a woman of high ideals.  She is survived by a thirteen-year-old daughter, Erline; 9-year-old son Claude; several close relatives in this county and at various points in Texas.
