I have come across some local history that states Roberts Mill was built, owned and operated by James Roberts in 1828. Some other local history books state that Roberts Mill was built and operated by Ninyon Roberts in May of 1842 and when his son, Emerson Roberts, was old enough to work in the mill, Ninyon and his son owned and opperated Roberts Mill. In the following years more property was obtained by the Roberts located on Mill Creek at the top of Waldens Ridge in the Community of Sawyer, Hamilton County, Tennessee.

After doing hours of research in hopes to find proof of when and who built and operated Roberts Mill first, I came to the conclusion that everyone that had written some history on Roberts Mill, had their own opinion of when the Roberts Mill was open for business, sometime in the early 1800's by James Roberts, Anderson Roberts or Ninyon Roberts. There is a possibility that all three of these Gentlemen are brothers and that they worked together building a home and making a living for their families, but I have not researched this part of the Roberts family. In looking up Roberts in the Hamilton Co. Census, years 1840-1900, Anderson Roberts and Emerson Roberts were the only Roberts with the occupation as a Miller and the others were Wagon Makers or Farmers.
