Gene Canter taught Buffalo School in the year 1913 with 66 students, grade one through
eight, his hands were full but in early days learning it was not uncommon for a teacher
to have this many. In fact, it is said of many early teachers, that they did more to help
the lagging boys and girls than teachers of big schools with half the number.

Buffalo school was situated on the road that came over the hill from Kempville __th the
Lock 8 road on the other side. Mrs. Fannie Givens, owner of the picture of Buffalo School,
and herself a student there, said that most children never rode to school in their lives,
with the exception of maybe a few times when they were brought by wagon or on horseback
'whenever' someone happenedto be going that way at school time." " I walked to school every
day of my life and the walk was around three miles each way. I can also remember the Billy
Butler children coming from the head of Buffalo each day and Shephard and Brooks children
coming from the Harris Hollow, and they came a longer distance than I did."

The land on which Buffalo School stood adjoined the lands of Bob Anderson and Pauline Mundy.
The building ceased to be used as a school in the year 1951 and the building was bought by
the residents of the Buffalo Community for $150.00 at public auction, to be used as a church
building for all denominations and community activities.

Around six years ago the U.S. Corps of Engineers took over the land and building , with the
land to be used for the Cordell Hull Lake area. The government sold the building to Tommy
Shepherd, who demolished it for its lumber.

The Buffalo School in its heyday, had a main corridor running through the building and there
were rooms at both sides, with the main school room at the rear, where a stage of sorts was
used for presenting skits at special holiday seasons, such as Christmas, and the stage was
also used for finals of the spelling bees.
