Smith Co. Tennessee Queries
2nd Half 2000
I am looking for descendants of John B. Newman and Bethena Ann Neill.
They were married in Meigs County, Tn. on Dec. 6, 1857. They lived
in White, Smith and Jackson Counties after that. Their children
were: Sarah Elizabeth b. 25 Feb. 1860,who married Joseph P. Hamilton.
John M. (Jack) b.1863 m/1 Sarah J. Hamilton in Smith County in 1881,
William (Bill) b. 1865, Thomas b. 1867, Daniel b. May 1870, Jocy F.
b. 1873, Martha b. 1875, and Fate b. 1879 probably in Smith County.
John was a widow and living in Jackson County with daughter Sarah in
1910 & 1920. He died there in 1922. Son, Jack, married twice and
had 3 or 4 boys. He moved to Sequatchie County, just out from
Dunlap. Two of his sons were named Red and Jim. Red operated a
service station. I descend from Sarah. Anyone with any information
on any of this family, or any place to look, please contact me.

CHAPMAN,COURTNEY-Begining family history research. My Grandfather,
Lee C. Chapman, b.12 Aug. 1871(70),dd. 7 Mar. 1947, married my
Grandmother, Cecil Hae Courtney, b.5 May 1895, dd. 28 Jan.1967. She
was originally from Putnam Co. and I was told that he was originally
from Dekalb Co. he had several brothers and half-brothers( Tom, Abe,
Albert, Herschel, Sam) and at least 1 sister( Minnie). She had at
least 1 sister that I know of( Maggie). They had seven children(
Mizell, Irene, Isaac, Yetta, Lee Jr., Dorothy, and Geraldine). If you
have any info, or maybe a relative, please contact me.

My grgrgrandmother, Elizabeth B. THOMPSON WYNNE born 1800 Wake County
NC had three THOMPSON brothers in Smith County, TN named Swan,
Charles, and Vincent. They came to Smith County, TN in the 1830's
from Wake County, NC. The WYNNES came to Shelby County, TN in 1841
from Wake County, NC. Was there a THOMPSON/HUDSPETH connection?
Martha HUDSPETH made a deed of gift for love and affection to
Elizabeth B. THOMPSON WYNNE in 1841 Shelby County, TN. What was
Martha's relationship to Elizabeth?

VA, area about 1800. The men were Shelton and Peter Craighead
(brothers), and I believe they came with their remarried mother, Mary
(father had died), and I believe she married a Kemp or Ballard. They

Looking for some help with George Washington BEAN who m Elizabeth
Lovelace TAYLOR in Smith co on Feb 14, 1827. They show on p 112 of
the 1830 Smith census, and they have moved to Union co Ill for the
1840 and following. He was b in 1806, but I don't know his parents.
Maybe the Walter shown on the 1820 Smith? . . . ? It 's not likely
that Peter of Monroe co Ky and Smith/Macon was his father, maybe an
uncle but not his father. Elizabeth's parents were Wm and Nancy
Collins Taylor, who went on to Autauga co Al. I have adequate info
on the Taylors, but I could use some help with George's parents. We
also know that George had a younger brother Wm. who also settled in
Union co.

married Evelina DONOHO December 6,1823 Sumner Co. TN; died after

I'm working to gather the info on Richard Franklin ROWLAND who was
born on April 25, 1875 in Rome, Smith Co, TN. His family moved to
Texas when he was about 2 year old. He married to Jannie E. COBURN.
His parents were Frank(lin) P.ROWLAND (Birth: 7 Aug 1854 in TN) and
Eliza Jane NOLEN (Birth: 18 Feb 1856 in TN). Richard's grandfather
was a ROWLAND with a rumor that he was married to a Cherokee by the
name of "Martha." This family is so difficult to find as I do not
have any evidence to support those families' existence. Hope to have

I am trying to find information on Stephen A. FARMER m. Rebecca.
Stephen was born April 15, 1815 and died June 9, 1877 in Crittenden
County Kentucky. Rebecca was born Sept. 23, 1829 and died March 1,
1907. Stephen is supposed to be from Smith county, Tn. His children
were Henry Clay, Susan Elizabeth m. Hugh MCMASTER, M.M. (son). Susan

Dykes and Black Dutch. Louisana & Mississippi. My grandmother's name
was Dykes born 1895 in Washington Parish La.. She told us we were
Black Dutch and part Cherokee. My g.grandfather's name Hance Bailey
Dykes born around 1857 maybe in S.C. or Ga., maybe Tennesee, but not
sure. There are many Dykes in our area but none connected to our
Black Dutch Dykes. I would like to hear from anyone that has been
told they were Black Dutch, especially if the last name is Dykes.

Looking for information on the children of William ROGERS, who was
born about 1780-90 in Chester Co., SC, but later moved to Tennessee.
William was the son of Clayton and Betridge SADLER ROGERS. William
supposedly had 14 children -- 4 daugthers and 10 sons. Of the 10
sons, 7 were supposedly Methodist ministers. The only offspring I
know for certain about is my great-grandfather, Jefferson C. Rogers,
who was born in 1820 in Tennessee. Jefferson C. married Nancy Adaline
CARDER. They lived in Bledsoe County in 1850, later moved to Smith,
White and Wilson counties. He died in 1906 in Wilson County. There
was a William Rogers listed on the Maury County tax rolls in 1816 and
in the 1820 census rolls, and I'm wondering if this could have been
my William or possibly one of his sons. Appreciate any help on this
"brick wall" in my family.
