ALLIN/ALLEN FAMILY OF SMITH CO.

I have recently been given the Allin Bible to copy that once belonged to my gg grandfather, James T. Allin. It was then that I noticed that he spelled his name with an "i"...and he was born in Person County, N.C.. His parents (1850 Smith Co. census) were William H. & Sarah S. Allin. She was b. 1805 & Wm. was b. 1798. Believe this Allin line to be related to Grant Allin of Dixon Springs/Trousdale Co., Tenn. Wm. & Sarah had children: Wm. H. Jr.,George W., James T.,Martha B. (Mrs. Fielding Kittrell) & John Y. Allin. George was killed in civil war and left a son Wm. H. Allin, named for his grandfather and mentioned in his (Wm. H. Allin) will of 1869. Believe Sarah may have been a Yancey. Does anyone have information on this family? Kind regards, Judith

GILLASPIE (GILLESPIE), HART

I have finally found Aunt Rachel! Smith County Probate Court, Page 63, has finally fulfilled a many-years-search for Rachel E. Gillaspie (Gillespie) (sister of James A., daughter of William P. & Ann (Vaughan) Gillaspie). We knew that she had "disappeared" between September and November 1855. She apparently married a "Hart". Can anyone help us, please? I assume his first name is James, since the administrator for her part of her father's estate is James Hart. Does anyone know anything about this family, please? Thank you!

BAILEY

I am a Smith Countian and I was wondering why one of Smith County's most famous persons. His name is DeFord Bailey. Mr. Bailey was born in 1899 around New Middleton. He was the first black man on the Grand Ole Opry. He recorded songs from New York to Atlanta. He has had books wrote on him along with several seminars about him as well. About a year ago A&E did a biography presentation on him. Governor Bredesen went as far as when he was major naming Dec. 14 DeFord Bailey day. Yet, his home county does not even recognize him at all. Please respond I would like to know how you feel about this.
