SPIVEY, BOWEN, DUKE,

Seeking information on JEREMIAH BOWEN (1770-1822) and his wife, MARTHA
POWELL SPIVEY (b.1797, Bertie Co., NC), who lived in Carthage, SMITH CO.,
TN. JEREMIAH and two of their sons who died young are buried in a graveyard
on the banks of the river at Carthage. It seems that MARTHA and her siblings
(PHEBE and NANCY SPIVEY; perhaps wives of OBEDIAH FREEMAN and MICAJAH DUKE)
came to Smith Co., as children. All of the above names appear in the appointment
of a guardian for THOMAS S. SPIVEY in Smith Co. in the early 1820s. I think
the SPIVEY father was the JAMES SPIVEY who appears in Smith and Jackson

in 1796 in Augusta County, Virginia. Andrew and Margaret were present in
Augusta, VA for the settlement of Margaret's father's estate, Thomas Calbreath
(also spelled Galbraith), in 1801. Nothing is known of them until the 1830
census where Margaret appears as the head of household in Smith County
Tennessee suggesting Andrew was deceased prior to 1830. Andrew and Margaret
had a son, who I am descended from, named Thomas M. WALLIS/WALLACE. He
was born in 1805 and claims Smith/Macon County, TN. as his place of birth.
Thomas M. WALLIS/WALLACE married Jane CALBREATH, his cousin, in ca. 1825.
Thomas M. WALLIS/WALLACE appears in census of 1840, 1850, as head of household
with Margaret as a member of his household. Possible siblings of Thomas
M. WALLIS/WALLACE are David, James, Jefferson, William C.and Sarah. Any

Seeking any information on the Martin HIRE family or any other HIRE, HYRE,
HYER families who are living or lived in Smith County, TN. Martin died
1828 in Smith County, TN. He was married to Emily MEADOR, born in Franklin
County, VA in 1790. They had two children, Eli bn in 1807, married to Mary
Epperson, and John. Suspect there were other children of Martin & Emily.
Suspect also that Emily remarried after Martin's death. Any insight would

DICKENS, GLOVER
George Washington GLOVER married Charlotte DICKENS. Charlotte (I believe)
was the aunt of my great-great grandfather Edward Glover DICKENS, b 1812-1815
in Tennessee, son of John DICKENS, possibly Smith County or Sumner County.
Edward moved to Iowa in the 1830's and was one of the first settlers in
Clayton County. (He built the first log cabin there.) In the 1860 census
a young man named Felix G. DICKENS (the G stands for GLOVER, I believe)
was in Edward's household. Felix G. DICKENS of Smith County later fought
in the Army of Tennessee, 28th infantry, company G, from 09-07-1861 until
1865. Does anyone have any information on George Washington GLOVER or the
DICKENS family? Obviously the DICKENS family thought fondly of him if they
named their children after him! Any help you can give is appreciated. My
web page is at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/DHoffman/DICKENS/index.htm

PRENTICE
We are seeking information about Robert Prentice (DOB c1777 - possibly
in VA). He lived in Smith and DeKalb Counties. He may have served in the
TN Militia from Smith County in 1796. He married Spouse #1 Ann and their
children were: Jackson (DOB c1818), who married Rachel; Margaret (DOB c1815),
who married Nicholas Parsley; and Isaac who married #1 Phadey M. and #2
Rhoda. Robert then married Spouse #2 Sarah, who helped him raise these
three children. He and Sarah's children were: John (DOB c1826); and Robert
(DOB c1831), who married #1 Elizabeth and #2 Adelaid Wallace Smith in Dec.
1887. Margaret and Isaac took their families and moved to AR c1860. Robert
(c1831) moved to Silver Point in Putnam County, TN. We believe both John
and Jackson Prentice may have died in a "poor house" in DeKalb County,
due
to mental problems. Any informtion on Robert (c1777), his parents, siblings,
any ancestors, where he is buried, etc. would be greatly appreciated. He

was very early to Hancock Co, Illinois, James VANCE was in nearby McDonough

HINTON, ELLIS
My GG-Grandfather John J. HINTON was on the 1850 census in Smith Co., showing
his father as a Thomas aged 49. His mother was a Nancy ??, In the 1880
census John was in Trousdale Co., married to an Elizabeth ELLIS. I believe
John's father Thomas is related to Col. John Hinton of NC. As I found out
, the Smith Co. court house burned and all records and are gone!! Does
anyone have or know where to get any info for Smith Co., or anything about
the HINTON family? This is a big block wall since records are hard to find.
Thanks !!

Calbreath/Galbreath
Glenn Smith Jan 21, 1998 14:00
Seeking information on Willaim and Thomas Calbreath who appear in the
1820 Federal census of Smith County, TN. Records show William Calbreath
resigned as a Justice of the Peace in Smith Co. on 11 August 1814, probably
because he acquired land in the northern part of the county near the Kentucky
border. This family moved to White Oak Creek, a branch of Big Barron River.
Another record mentions "Calbreath's Mill on White Oak Creek." Can anyone
help on this? Thanks.
