{Transcribers notes}

Jesse Lankford was b. March 19, 1796, Granville Co., North Carolina son of Parish Lankford and Sarah Lawrence. Jesse Lankford is said to have died in 1827, at 31 years, in a drowning accident on the cumberland river while rafting logs. His body was never recovered. Family history states that Jesse's widow was Tabitha Kemp, daughter of Murphy Kemp. 1830 census of Smith County, Tennesse shows Tabitha Lankford as head of house with 1 male child b. 1815-1820, 1- male child b. 1820-1825, 1 female child 1825-1830, 2 female children b. 1820-1825.

The male children have been identified as Henry Lankford b. December 08, 1815, and Sidney Lankford b. November 07, 1822, Smith County, TN. The 3 daughters of Jesse and Tabitha Lankford have yet to be identified.

Widow Tabitha Lankford married William Canaday. Judging from the age of the oldest child appearing in the1850 Smith County, TN census, they were probably married 1830-1837.

The lack of early marriage records for Smith Co. prevent the recorded documentation of these two marriages.

It is believed that the Jinks Kemp that appears in these records as administrator of the estate of Jesse Lankford was brother of Tabithia Kemp Lankford.
