ERWIN 25 March 1998
My ggrandfather James Robert ERWIN and his wife Nancey(Cathey) ERWIN used to visit Unicoi County or the town of Erwin every year about the same time. They were gone from their home in Haywood County NC for about 9-10 days each time and they told people they were going to visit relatives. They would have traveled by horse and buggy or wagon. I know that his father was James ERWIN and mother or step-mother was Elizabeth. He(James Robert) was born 15 Jan 1853 in McDowell Co NC. He always went by his middle name "Robert" or "Bob". He had two older brothers who were Civil War Veterans. Little is know about the oldest brother known as "Jim" except that he enterd a home for Confederate Veterans about 1900, but the middle brother was Captain John Randolph ERWIN, 5th Cavalry, Company F, 63rd Regiment and acting Major at the battles of Chamberlain Run, Five Forks , and Namozine Church just before Lee's surrender. According to Census records, Captain John appears to have been born in South Carolina, possibly York Co. My problem is that there are so many "James" ERWINs that could have been the father of these three men. The James I am trying to identify also enlisted in Homeguard duty as an older man and died during the War. He was married twice and had children of both marriages and my ggrandfather was the youngest of the first marrriage. If this is interesting to anyone, or if you have ERWIN ties to Mecklenburg Co. NC or McDowell Co. NC(Prev Burke and Rutherford) please write me. I am located near Asheville, NC.
