the origins of my William LEWIS. Obvious connections, but nothing
definitive. They all have links to Pittsylvania>Henry County VA areas, and Rowan, Orange, Surry, Guilford, and Cumberland Counties, NC. Any information or suggestions will be appreciated. Other allied and associated names from Greasy Cove and Washington

LEWIS 24 January 1998
I have some bits of old history (unofficial) that refer to Erwin as Greasy Cove. My Great Great Great Grandfather might have come from near Erwin. A LEWIS Family was attacked by indians around 1790 on what is now Granny Lewis Creek. The family was killed except for a daughter who was later traded for a rifle. The father was away from the cabin at the time and survived also. There was a local militia company commanded by a Captain Taylor. They chased the indians as far as the French Broad River. This girl might have been the mother of my Great Great Great Grandfather William Jessie LEWIS. Seeking info on this matter. Jessie later lived on Foster Creek in North Carolina. He married Nancy HENSLEY.
