Mrs. Ellene Goodin Sawyer
Mrs. Ellene Goodin Sawyer, age 93, 1812 North Main Avenue, died Tuesday, February 3, 1998 at Colonial Hills Health Care.
Mrs. Sawyer was a native of Limestone and a daughter of the late Thomas Elliott, Senoir and Glenna Hall Goodin. A graduate of Science Hill High School, she attended East Tennessee State Normal School and graduated from American College, Chicago. She lived in Maynard, Mass. until September 1942, when she moved back to Erwin.
Mrs. Sawyer taught school in the Kingsport, Washington County, and Unicoi County school systems for 30 years until her retirement, and thereafter worked as a substitute teacher for 20 years. She was a memeber of the Teacher's Retirement Associaiton, Southern Dames, the Erwin Unaka Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Magdalene Chapter, Maynard, Illinois, GFWC, Erwin Monday Club and Gamma Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta sorority, ETSU. Mrs. Sawyer was also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
She was precede in death by her husband, Reginald P. Sawyer in December 1968. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Glenna Sawyer and Curtis P. Riley, Sr.; one brother, John Goodin, Johnson City; three grandchildren, Ellen R. Sewell, Erwin, Curtis R. Riley, Jr. and Glenna L. Riley, both of Mobile, Alabama; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Sewall, Justin Riley, Jennifer Riley and Jessica Riley; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sawyer is interred at Urbana Cemetery, Limestone.
Mrs. Frances Lloyd Slagle
Frances Lloyd Slagle, 61 of 17767 Annapolis Rock Road, Woodbine, Maryland died Tuesday, February 17, 1998 in the Gilcrest Hospice Center, Baltimore.
Mrs. Slagle was a native of Erwin and had lived in Maryland for 30 years. Mrs. Slagle was a daughter of the late THomas and Nola Buchanan Lloyd. She retired from the Montgomery School System after 27 1/2 years of service. Mrs. Slagle was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Slagle on June 29, 1983. Survivors include: two sons, Michale W. slagle, Newport, Virginia and Kelsey Slagle, Woodbine, Maryland; one daughter, Brenda Denney, Charles Town, West Virginia; one sister, Shirley Amoss, Bristol; one brother, Thomas Lloyd, Johnson City; six grandchildren, Michelle Slagle, Elizabeth Slagle, and Donald Walker Slagle, all of Newport, Virginia, Matthew Slagle, Woodbine, Maryland, and Christa Denney and Joshua O'Dell, both of Charles Town, West Virginia; eight step-grandchildren, mother- and fahter-in law, Hubert and Verta Haynes, Flag Pond; and devoted companion of 12 years, Hugh Atkins. Mrs. Slagle is interred in the Edwards Branch Cemetery, Flag Pond.
Helen J. Strickland
Mrs. Helen J. Strickland, 80, 234 Stalling Lane, Erwin died Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at Erwin Health Care Center. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Daniel and Madge Blevins Strickland. Ms. Strickland worked at Southern Pottries and later retired from Hoover Ball, Inc. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: four brothers, Jim, Bill, John, and Charles Stirckland; and by three ssters, Ressie Strickland, Deane Shelton and Maude Hendrix. Survivors include: one sister, Dora Spallers, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Strickland is interred in Martins Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Harry L. Tapp, Senior
Mr. Harry L. Tapp, Senior, 60, 416 Railroad Street, Erwin, died Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Tapp was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Geter and Olive Murphy Tapp. He served with the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Tapp moved to Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 35 years and by Safeco for 30 years. He moved back to Erwin following his retirement. He attended Fishery Union Church and Ninth street Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Cathryn Osborne Tapp; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Raymond Harlow, Erwin; two sons, Harry L Tapp, II and wife, Betty Tapp, Alexandria, Virginia, and Timothy Tapp, rwin; one sister, Margaret Tapp of Florida; two brothers, Jim Tapp, Erwin, and Bill Tapp of Atlanta; and three grandchildren, Joyce Tapp, Harry tapp III and Clinton Harlow. Mr. Tapp is interred at Fishery Union Church Cemetery.
Mr. Bruce Thomas
Mr> Bruce Thomas, 65, 3010 West Market Street, Johnson City died Friday, February 27, 1998 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
Mr. Thomas was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Johnson City since 1961. He was a son of the late Brownlow and Minnie Hensley Thomas. He was a retied projectionist with Wylie Theaters. He also co-owned and managed the Capri Hotel in Johnson City. Mr. THomas was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: one brohter, Earl Thomas; four sisters, Gladys Miller, Ruby Griffith, Helen Gentry and Pansy Luttrell. Survivors include: his wife, Eleanor Harris Thomas, Johnson City; two sons, Bruce David Thomas and James "Jim" Thomas, both of Johnson City, Susan Thomas Goodwin, Johnson City; one brother, Ray Thomas Townsend, Delaware; one sister, Pauline Cash, Erwin; two grandchildren, Kayla Elizabeth Thomas and Chase Jordan Silvers; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Erwin Rescue Squad. Mr. Thomas is interred in Washington County Memory Gardens.
Mr. James Pat Tilson
Mr. James Pat Tilson, 79, 201 Pat Tilson Road, Erwin, died Monday, Febrauary 23, 1998 in the Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City.
Mr. Tilson was a lifelong Unicoi County resident and son of the late E.D. "Dolphus" and Eliza Gentry Tilson. Mr. Tilson was a retired farmer and had retired from the Unicoi County Highway Department after 10 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.
Other than his parents, Mr. Tilson was preceded in death by two brothers; Joe Tilson and Elmer Tilson; and three sisters, Sophia Offutt, Kate Tipton, and Mary Tipton. Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Richards Tilson; two sons, James Glenn Tilson, Senior, Erwin and Daivd Wayne Tilson, Knoxville; one daughter, Betty Lou Tilson Tester, Gray; three sisters, Hazel Tipton, Princie B. Tipton and Tilda Tipton, all of Erwin; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Ledford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.
Eva Love "Grannie" Tipton
Funeral services for Eva Love "Grannie" Tipton, age 78, of 165 Bumpass Cove Road, Erwin, who died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, were conducted at 2 p.m., on Friday, June 5, 1998, at Embreeville Cove Missionary Baptist Church. The Reverends Otis Banks, Danny Osborne, and Shelby Greene officiated. Vocal selections were provided by the McNabb Family, Shining Light, and by the Voices of Gospel. Interment followed at Bumpass Cove Cemetery. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Bob and Maddie Nun Love. Mr.s Tipton had been employed by Harris Tarkett and by Moody Dunbar's Pepper Plant before retiring in 1985. She was a member of Embreeville Cove Missionary Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and was a founding member of the Ladies Aide Circle. In addition to her husband, Albert Tipton, she was preceded in death by: two sisters, Ruth Rogers and Lucy Greenwell; and one brother, Ted Love. Survivors include three sisters: Wanda Wilson, Erwin, Alice Graham, Chuckey, and Irene Casey, Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews. Valley Funeral Home was in charge.
Mr. Roscoe Tipton
Mr. Roscoe Tipton, 78, 178 Bart Green Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, MArch 11, 1998, in the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Tipton was a Green Mountain, North Carolina native and had lived in Unicoi County for 38 years, before moving to the Johnson City are 21 yers ago. He was a son of the late John and Edie Bryant Tipton.
Mr. Tipton retired from Hoover Ball after 25 years of sevice. He was a member of Cornerstone Church, where he attended the Keenagers Sunday School class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: one son, Gary Tipton in 1967; one brother, Charles Tipton; and one sister, Bessie Tipton. Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Bradley Tipton, Johnson City; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Rita) Haun, Erwin, and Mrs, Jim (Jan) Foster, Telford; two brothers, Jonas Tipton, Christmas, Florida, and James Tipton, Mt. Morris, Michigan; two sisters, Birdie Tipton, Gray, and Edgel Stallard, Bradenton, Florida; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Mr. Tipton is interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
Daniel Albert Tittle, Senior
Mr. Daniel Albert Tittle, Senior, 83, of Blountville, died Thursday, February 26, 1998 in the Greystone Health Care Center.
Mr. Tittle was a native of Erwin but had lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He was a son of the late Chalres and Minnie Tapp Tittle. He was a cattle breeder.
Survivors include: his wife, Maxine Malone Tittle, of the homel one daughter, Gail Cooke, Blountville; one son, Danny Tittle, Blountville; four brothers, Sam Tittle, Unicoi, Chuch Tittle, Erwin, and Paul Tittle and Tom Tittle, both of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Beyty Standridge, Benton and William Tittle, Bluff City; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Tittle is interred in Buffalo Cemetery.
Mr. Clifford Burke Toney
Mr. Clifford Burke Toney, 76, 111 Old Fishery Road, Erwin, died Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Toney was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Herbert E. and Ada Ford Toney. He served with the United States Navy Seabees during World War II in North Africa and Sicily. He owned and operated Toney's Grocery in the Fishery Community of Erwin for 32 years until his retirement in 1984.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Ford Toney. Survivors include: his wife, Amner McInturff Toney; one daughter, Janet Hodge, Oak Ridge; one son, Reedy Toney, Kingsport; one sister, Marie McInturff, Unicoi; five grandchildren, Shayne Cuzzell, Kaelin Toney, Susan Box, Wendy Morgan and Laurie Whitson; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Toney is interred at Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.
Hazen H. Toney, Junior
Mr. Hazen H, Toney, Junior, 74, Titusville, Florida, died Monday May 4,1998 at his residence. He was a native of Erwin, and the son of the late Ruth Emerson Toney and Hazen H. Toney, Senior. Mr. Toney was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Toney Sammons and one grandons, David Sclafani. Survivors include: his wife, Betty Sammons Toney, Titusville; two daughters, Vicki Sclafani, North Palm Beach, and Linda Eden, COcoa; two sons, C.R. Toney, Mason, Ohio, and W.L. "Skip" Toney, Titusville; one sister, Dorothy Fortune, Erwin; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Walter "Doug" Toney
Mr. Walter "Doug" Toney, 68 of 608 South Lupine Court, Melbourne, Florida died Wednesday February 11, 1998 at his residence.
Mr. Toney was a native of Erwin and a son of the late J. Frank Toney and Sue Helen Emerson Toney. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, having served in the Korean War. Mr. Toney retired in 1989, after 35 years of service as an engineering analyst for RCA and General Electric at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. He was a fomrer Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop Number 323, in Melbourne for more than 10 years. As a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, he received the District Award of Merit, Sliver Beaver, and Order of Arrow Brotherhood. He led more than 20 young men, including his two sons, to the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Toney was a member of First United Methodist Church, Melbourne.
Survivors include: his wife, Nancy R. Toney, Melbourne; two sons, Jame Douglas Toney, Palm Bay, Florida and Jeff Toney, Melbourne; one daughter, Jennifer Sue Toney, Gainseville, Florida; one brother, Emerson Toney, Littleton, Colorado; and two grandchildren, Jason Toney and Jamie Toney. Mr. Toney is interred in Florida Memorial Gardens, Melbourne. Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 725-C West State Road 424, Longwood, Florida 32759.
Mrs. Elsie Juanita Vance Varshall
Mrs. Elsie Juanita Vance Varshall, 70, died Tuesday, November 4, 1997, at
North Side Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was a Unicoi, Tennessee native and a daughter of the late Sam and
Jane Campbell Vance. Mrs. Varshall was a homemaker. She was a member of
the Keystone Free Will Baptist church.
Mrs. Varshall was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include two sons, John Edward Vance, Johnson City, Tennessee, and
Kenneth Vance, Pelham, Alabama; three daughters, Joyce Vance, Edna Vance
and Brenda Whitson, all of Johnson City, Tennessee; one brother, Howard
Vance, Unicoi, Tennessee; one granddaughter; and several nieces and
nephews.
Mr. Arnold Martin Williams, Senior
Mr. Arnold Martin Williams, Senior, 87 of 209 Flag Pond Road, Flag Pond died Friday, February 27, 1998 in the Anderson Nursing Home, Gray.
Mr. Williams was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Maryland for several years before returning to Unicoi County 25 years ago. He was the son of the late Pittman and Ethel Williams. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Williams was a member of the Lower Higgins Creek Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: three wives, Gertie Mae Tilson Williams, Elva Edwards Williams, and Matilda Jane Cousins Williams; two sons; two daughters; and three sisters. Survivors include: eight sons, Arnold Martin Williams, Junior, Jack Williams, both of Baltimore, Lawrence Williams, Flag Pond, Bill Williams, St. Louis, Missouri, Bob Williams, Tom Williams, Glenn Williams, and Leonard Williams all of Wilmington, North Carolina; three daughters, Gladys McIntosh, Flag Pond, Mary Lou Shelton, Cullam, Alabama, and Betty Chavis, Red Spings, North Carolina; one brother, Millard Williams, Erwin; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams is interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Coy Williams
Mr. Coy William, 75, of Route 2, Box 330, Spivey Mountain Community, Erwin died Sunday, April 19, 1998 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Williams was a native of Unicoi County, and a son of the late Dillard and Elizabeth Jones Williams. Mr. Williams retired in 1988 as a timber faller following alife's work in the timber industry. He was a member of Mountain Dale Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Barnett, and by three sisters, and one brother. Survivors include: his wife, Irene Phillips Williams; two sons, Jessie Carl Williams, Erwin, and Earnest Dillard Williams, California; one daughter, Mary E. English, Erwin; four brothers, Grady Williams, Jonesborough, Thamer Williams, Erwin, Avery Williams, Idaho, and Robert Williams, Erwin; two sisters, Ola Cooper, Michigan, and Helen Tittle, Erwin; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Williams in interred in the Williams Family Cemetery, Spivey Community, Erwin.
Mrs. Glennie D. Williams
Mrs. Glennie D. Williams, 87, of 360 Crosswhite Lane, Erwin, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
Mrs. Williams wa a Yancey County, North Carolina native but had lived in Unicoi County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Reverend James and Cora Hampton Deaton. Mrs. Williams was a housewife. She was a member of the Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, and also a member of the Clinchfield Senior Citizen Center.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Fulton Williams in 1964, one daughter, Marie Roberts, in 1955; two brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include: one son, C.F. Williams, Columbia, South Carolina; two sisters, Essie Foster and Pearl Parkey, both of Erwin; and seven grandchildren, Doug Williams, Mike Williams, Tommy Williams, Theresa Totel, Ginger Hodge, Larry Roberts, and Gary Roberts. Mrs. Williams is interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
Jonathan "Willie" Williams
Jonathan "Willie" Williams, age 73, of California City, CA, passed away Thursday, April 30, 1998 after a brief illness. He was born in Erwin, Tennessee, and was the son of the late Frank and Nancy Williams. Mr. Williams retired in 1979 from the Pacific Missile Test Center, Point Mugu, with more than 30 years federal service, which included military service during World War II. After his civil service retirement, he was employed by COMARCO, Inc. in Caramillo, CA, and retired in 1987 to travel the country with his wife. He is survived by: his wife of 41 yeras, Zell; children Michale, Allen, Renier, James, Bill, Peggy, Paulette, Mary Nell, and their families.
Mrs. Roberta Corn Williams
Mrs. Roberta Corn Williams, 80 of 229 Central Avenue, Swannanoa, North Carolina died Sunday, Febraru 22, 1998, in Memorial Mission Hospital, Asheville, North Carolina, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Williams was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Maryland for 48 years before moving to Swannanoa in 1997. She was a daughter of the late Walter and Linnie Shelton Corn. Mrs. Williamd retired from Bendix Radio Division in Maryland after 27 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by: her husband, Golden Williams; two daughters, Faye Fender and Mae Oliver; and one sister, Virgie Boone. Survivors include: two sons, Earl Williams and Roger Williams, both of Baltimore; two daughters, Gale Hansen, Baltimore and Midge Roper, Swannanoa, North Carolina; four brothers, Thomas "Mutt" Corn and Smith Hoyle, both of Flag Pond; Harry Corn, Erwin, and Hartsell Hotle, Greeneville; one sister, Verta Haynes, Flag Pond; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Williams is interred in the Higgins Creek Cemetery, Flag Pond.
Mr. William Turner Williams, Junior
Mr. William Turner Williams, Junior, 75, a resident of the Erwin Health Care Center, 100 Stalling Lane died Saturday March 28, 1998 at the center.
Mr. Williams was a Unicoi County native, and a son of the late William T. and Rena McCurry Williams.
Other than his parents, he was rpeceded in death by five brothers and six sisters. Survivors include: two nephews, W.B. "Sonny" Rutter, Johnson City; and Ira "Pete" Rutter, Erwin; and other nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams in interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Ovlen Willis
Mr. Ovlen Willis, 73 of 441 Love Street died Thursday, February 26, 1998 in the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Willis wa a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Dave and Myrtle Jones Willis. He was employed with Industrial Garmet before retiring in 1982 after 28 years of service. Mr. Willis was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by: four brothers, Wallen Willis, Joe Willis, Kenneth Willis and John Willis; three sisters, Liz Slater, Maude Higgins, and Minta Chandler. Survivors include: his wife, Helen Higgins Willis; one son, Michael Willis, Erwin; four daughters, Janice Barnett, Unicoi, Sue Ann Matousek, Springfield, Virginia, Kathy Elizabeth Shircliff, Salem, Virginia, Karen McClanahan, Lebanon, Virginia; three sons-in-law, Leonard Barnett, Larry Shircliff, and David McClanahan; one daughter-in-law, Lora Willis; five sisters, Ann Minor, Skaneateles, New York, Velva Byrd, Eva Higgins, Georgia Radford, and Shirley Duncan all of Erwin; four grandchildren, Randy Keith Arrowood, Steven Arrowood, Willis Matousek, and Katie Rae McClanahan; three great-grandchildren, Brittany, Keith, and Whitney; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Willie Wilson
Mr. Willie Wilson, 98, resident of the Erwin Health Care Center, Erwin, died Sunday, April 26, 1998 in the Center.
Mr. Wilson was a Yancey County, North Carolina native, but had lived in Unicoi County most of his life. He was an employe of the Clinchfield Railroad, having retried in 1960 after 35 years of service.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Peterson Wilson, February 1, 1995, and by one son, Clarence Wilson. Survivors include: one osn, Gaylon Wilson, Erwin; and three daughters, Viola Brackins, Louise Wilson, and Yvonne Wilson, all of Erwin; four grandhcildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Wilson is interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Florence Lee Coward Woodward
Mrs. Florence Lee Coward Woodward, 77, died Monday, January 12,
1998.
Mrs. Woodward was a native of Erwin and a daughter of the late John E.
and Rowe Smith Coward. She was a retired school teacher and former member
of Faith Covenant Church in Florence, South Carolina.
Mrs. Woodward was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett Woodward.
Survivors include: two sons, Gary Woodward, Matthews, North Carolina, and
Bill Woodward, Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers, Bill Coward, Sumter,
South Carolina, and Jim Coward, Indian Rocks Beach, Florida; two sisters,
Ruth Coward, Erwin and Carolyn Underhill, Anaheim, California; and four
grandchildren. Mrs. Woodward is interred at Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville,
South Carolina.
