MERCER, Peter

Born in Grainger County, TN, 1834, parents unknown, his father is listed as being from VA and mother from NC, according to an 1880 census. Peter made a Marriage Bond in Union County in 1854 to Melvina/Melissa Beeler.

Did Peter marry her?. There is no marriage license to indicate they married, but a year or two later he did marry a Sarah Shelton, in Union County. Sarah and Peter had four children.

He later married Tibitha/Bitha Pryor with whom he had another large family some of which resides in Bledsoe County to this day. Did his home in Grainger County become part of Union County, when Union was formed?

He was living in Union County when the Civil War began. Being in NorthEast Tennessee, he joined the Union Army. He served in the 8th Calvary Co. G. and was involved in short skrimages. Somewhere along this early enlistman he left the camp (today we call it, going AWOL), and went home. He was absent for several months, but return to serve until the end of the War. At the battle of Bulls Gap, he was thrown from his horse and injured his back. This injury was later to be the reason for his application of a pension. He returned to Union County after the war.

He moved to Pine Bluff, Missouri, where he remained with his family for about a year, 1886-87. While crossing the river their dog jumped off the ferry and swam across.

His next move was to Bledsoe County, Tennessee, by 1893 he had moved again, this time to Grayson County, Texas, where he remained until his death in 1913.
