In response to a query that appeared in the December 1997 issue of Pathways regarding Martin Rice who migrated from Union County, Tennessee, to Missouri in the 1830s, the following was submitted by Leonard Wolfenbarger of Knoxville, Tennessee.
The first religious meetings in Van Buren Township located southwest of the present site of Lone Jack, Missouri, were conducted by James Savage and Joab Powell and others. These meetings resulted in the establishment of a church called Pleasant Gardens in 1838. A cemetery by the same name was planned near the church. Leonard's information regarding the church and cemetery was published in the Pioneer Wagon, Volume 3, Number 1 (1982), in Jackson County, Missouri. The brief remarks pertaining to the church history and a list of those buried in the Pleasant Gardens Cemetery were compiled and submitted for publication by Mildred L. Shawhan. She noted that many of the tombstones have recently been 'broken up" for the construction of a walk while others have been vandalized. The list includes the following:
1. Martha Ann Poindexter, daughter of T. M. Poindexter died September 10, 1846, age 5 years 11 months 25 days.
2. James Miller died August 13, 1855, age 36 years 7 months 14 days.
3. Children of G. V. & A. Kreeger, Jane Kreeger April 3, 1866, age 3 days, Eddie Lee August 28, 1875, age 4 months 21 days.
4. Araminta Kreeger wife of G. W. Kreeger died July 4, 1875, 45 years 2 days.
5. Sallie Kreeger daughter of G. V. & A. Kreeger died December 16, 1873, age 5 years 7 months 16 days.
6. Geo. W. Kreeger died June 18, 1895, age 79 years 17 days.
7. Thos. I. Lawrence born October 16, 1840, died 1863.
8. Josiah A. Lawrence, second son of Elizabeth & James Lawrence, died September 6, 1845, age 15 years 10 months 14 days.
9. James Lawrence died May 15, 1844.
10. Oliver Powell born February 1840 died October 1, 1862.
11. Elizabeth Powell born February 1800 died February 1856.
