 Watauga History

North America’s first independent majority-rule government by Europeans of American birth was formed with the adoption of the written articles of the Watauga Association on May 17, 1772, four years before the Declaration of Independence.  This “Watauga Association” was formed and organized for self-government in the Watauga Valley in East Tennessee, on land bought from the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians by the pioneer settlers who had crossed the Appalachian mountains.

          The Watauga Chapter DAR was organized by Mrs. Keller Anderson (Jean Robertson) on April 19th, 1894, and derived its name from the first settlement on Tennessee soil and in honor of the first free and independent government established in America.
