Pre 1839 Wilson County, Tennessee Guardian Records

The first book specifically kept for guardian records for Wilson County began in 1836. Prior to that time guardian records were found mentioned in the Will and Inventory book series, and also in the County Court minutes. The guardian books were abstracted by Thomas E. Partlow, as were will and inventory books, although he tended to include only the first mention of a guardian in his abstracts, and not subsequent listings

At the beginning of the June 1832-Mar. 1836 County Court minutes on Family History Library microfilm 430421 are found the following guardian records. It appears to be an attempt by the clerk to account and list guardian bonds in his possession, some dating to pre 1820. While mention of many of these guardian records can also be found in the will and inventory books, there are many that are not found there. The comments that appear under "when released" are those of the clerk.

There are several things to keep in mind in using these records. These records provide an index to some of the guardian records mentioned in the court minutes, and examination of those should be the ultimate goal of anyone interested in any of the cases. When the heirs are not specifically named, and only referred to as "XXXXX's heirs," the date of the court session in which the guardian was appointed becomes important. These records are also available, and by examining that court session, the names of the heirs can often be learned. The same applies for those listings where the name of the heir is given. By examining the appropriate court session, the name of the father may be learned.

This record would also appear to be only a listing by the clerk of either guardianships still continuing in 1832 when this book began, or cases in which he did not know what happened. There are undoubtedly guardian cases settled before this time, that he did not include in this record. For those records, the county court minutes would need to be examined.

Other details to keep in mind are that when a man died and minor children were given a guardian, the assumption can not be made that those were the only minor children. A widow may have kept children at home that she was able to care for, and a guardian appointed only for part of the children.

The records are listed in the same order as they appear on the microfilm, beginning with G through Z, and then B through F appearing at the end. D, E, F are partial pages. The A pages appear to be missing. The pages appear very soiled, and in some cases names could not be read or are uncertain.

The columns are: "name of heirs"; "guardians name"; "guardian's securities"; "when appointed"; "when released"

The first page contains only the right hand side, listing the second security, when appointed; when released. For these entries, the names of heirs, guardian, and first security are not known.
