Hi List,

I just returned from a whirlwind tour of the southeast which included a
brief visit to Wilson Co, TN and the new archives facility there.

I found in one of the Partlow books there, court minutes 1861-1867. It
contained the following reference on page 51:
On 8 Nov 1862 Richard Mount (commonly known as Cedar Dick) did wilfully and
maliciously kill and murder Joseph Lannom by cutting, stabbing, and killing
him with a large and murderous knife. 19 sep 1866. (Pp. 612-613)

Can anyone tell me with some surety which of the Richard MOUNTs this is? Is
he perhaps the one that married Nancy Edwards?

I applaud you Bob for your effort in working with the census records and your
willingness  to share your work.  Thank you!

I have a scanner and would be willing to try a page or two to see if it would
turn out o.k. . . . if so, I'm willing to scan in the 1820 and maybe the
1830.  The idea of all of us working together to share this information is
great.  It would seem to be more beneficial to more people over time if it is
posted to the web page and not just to the list.

Bob and Nancy,

I have a scanner and would be willing to help with the project previously
mentioned. I would need to know how to save the image so it may be used on
a webpage. I would prefer to not do ALL of the scanning so that I wouldn't
"wear out" our scanner, but I would certainly be more than happy to help!
(I assume there are many pages involved.)

Dear Nancy,

I am primarily researching the families of William Greer, b. abt. 1822
in TN. & Asa Greer, b. abt. 1827in TN.  They were both blacksmith's in
Laguardo, TN.  They were probably related.

My g-grandmother is Mary A. Greer Shepherd.  She is to daughter of
either William or Asa.  I'm not sure.  She is buried near Asa but
William always lived next door to her all his life.  I suspect William
is my g-g-grandfather.

I have not come across a John that I have noticed.  However, I will
keep my eyes open and let you know if I do.

If any of my info looks familiar, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jim Moore

Can anyone help me with this?  My gggg grandparents were Abijah RICE and Jaley Ann BROWN.  I have found amarriage license for a couple that I believe to be them in Wilson Co., TN, dated June 19, 1817.  This couple is Jaley Ann BROWN and Elijah RICE, the Elijah I believe to be a transcriptionist's error (as I found the listing in a book entitled MARRIAGES OF WILSON CO., TN, as well as in EARLY MIDDLE TN MARRIAGES).

Abijah was born about 1796 in what is now Cocke County, TN.  I believe that his father's name was William RICE.

Jaley was born about 1802 at a station camp on the Little Duck River, near the Old Stone Fort near what is now Manchester, Coffee County, TN.  Her father's name was Leonard RICE and her mother's name was WATHACAPEE (she was Indian).

The bondsman for Jaley and Aibjah's wedding was a Stephen BROWN, possibly a brother to Jaley.  Or in actuality her father may be Stephen BROWN, and her grandfather may be Leonard.

Does anyone have these people in their databases?  My Abijah and Jaley went to Southeastern Missouri, probably via KY and IL.  They are on the 1830 census for Cape Girardeau Co., MO.

 Any help greatly appreciated.

"EARLY MIDDLE TENNESSEE MARRIAGES, VOL. 2, BRIDES" by Sistler, 1988, shows this marriage as taking place in 'Wi', which is, I think, the code for Williamson County, Tennessee.  In this book 'Wl' is the code for Wilson County, Tennessee.

Does anyone know, is this an error in Sistler's book?  If so, I'd like to correct my copy, as I am also researching BASS in Wilson County.

Hi Bob:
I've responded to you through the list because it was not me who was looking for the Jones info.  It was VHULL@aol.com (see below).  As a BASS researcher, I was merely inquiring about the accuracy of a JONES/BASS marriage they showed taking place in Wilson County 28 Feb 1809, when Sistler's "Early Middle Tennessee Marriages" shows it as taking place in Williamson County.  Do you show this Thomas Jones/Polly Bass marriage in your Wilson Co. book?  If not, then it must be a Williamson County marriage.  Please let us know.

any type of text file to do your web pages with...
If you just add it into your email as you did the one you sent me yesterday,
 that works out fine....
(when you run out of room on one email, just go to another one....)
Whatever way is easiest on you will work for me.....if you want me to email
some instructions on how to do text files in Microsoft Word, I will do that
privately and not through the list.
Also, a great editing program that you already have on your computer is
Notepad....Just go to the Start button, say "Run" and type in "notepad"
(without the quotes)......once you type your data into Notepad, and save it,
you can either "copy and paste" into an email, or "attach" the file to your
 email.

Many, many thanks from me and I know I can speak for listowner Greg Tomerlin

Is there anyone out there looking for Riggan family from Wilson County? My
ggg grandmother was Fredonia Elizabeth Riggan. Her father was Samuel H.
Riggan and her mom's last name was Tarver. Does anyone who lives in Wilson
County know any Riggans that I could correspond with? Fredonia was married to
Sam Tripp/Trippe and had two children Henrietta and Tilman Valrus.
Unfortunately can't find any more records on Sam or where he came from or
when he was born or when he died.  Was their marriage records of any kind or
any requirement for the posting of marriage bonds in the early 1860s in
Wilson County? I was hoping that would give me a clue. Cynthia Cline also

Due to the kind help of Jim Moore, I now know my MCFARLAND and BILBRO ancestors settled near Rutland Church.  I believe this is in West Wilson Co. but have no idea where.  I know there is a Rutland Road, I believe here in Mt. Juliet, but am not sure.  Can anyone help with the location of a Rutland Church.  The information I have says the BILBROS arrived and found land in that "neighborhood" in 1795 -1796 where "John MCFARLAND had established his family upon his removal from Nashville"

Any help with establishing a more exact location would be of great help.
 Thanks

Added to this should be another Thomas Jones. See Sarah Moyers' note below.  Now we have:
One Thomas Jones who died about 1839 in Davidson County, TN.
One Thomas Jones who died in 1849 in Wilson County, TN.
On 9 April Sarah Moyers wrote:
"Thomas Jones died in 1849 in Wilson County and Polly divided the land two years later between her children.  I believe she died shortly thereafter, but can find no further information on her."

Gale,
The Knight Cemetery is on Knight's Creek Road. This road is about a half mile SSW of Statesville , turning south off the Greenvale Road. The cemetery is about a quarter mile up this road, on the west side. There was also a Knight School located nearby. Other cemeteries close to Knight's Cemetery are Spurlock on Jaco Hollow Rd., the Old Spurlock and Stroud Cemeteries, both on Knight's Creek Rd.

Cynthia,
The Ricketts' Cemetery is located on Rocky Branch Road which is west of the road between Watertown and Statesville. It is on the south side of the road, between the turnoffs for Bug Hollow and Griffin Hollow. Both these roads go north from Rocky Branch but this would give you some landmarks to look for.

Jennings Family Cemetery

This might be the best cemetary for me to look, since I know we are related  to the Jennings through marriage to an Anniliza Jennings.  Does some one  have directions to this cemetary, and or know where I could find a list of  the burial sites there.  I know in Texas, one would go to the court house  where there are books with the various cemetaries and who are buried in  them and in what location.  Is this the case in TN also?

I was going through some files and found the following typed copy of a will sent to me several years ago with the notation that it was not in the will book and is believed to have been removed by a researcher in 1906. Although this would not serve as a proven document since the original is missing, perhaps it might provide a clue for further research for anyone interested in this family.

I have a WOOD family in Wilson Co TN, but this is not my same family. Therefore, I would not be able to answer any questions anyone might have.

Bob,

Sorry it took so long to reply, I have a 2 year old son who has  learned to "hide" some of my Email.  Please do use what ever you have regarding Calvin Kelley in your JP book.  I have a web site at Broderbund  that will give you additional info about his family.  Look at the descendants of Dennis KELLEY report.  Dennis was the first of our Kelleys to come to Wilson County and he was Calvin's grandfather. Here's the link:

Anything that you might be able to tell me about Calvin would be appreciated.  He was the first of our family to migrate to Texas.  Thanks a  lot.

I saw the following notice in a month-old Lebanon Democrat newspaper and thought I would send to the list, in case someone is interested.....

THE HISTORY OF WILSON COUNTY now on sale

Vol 1    The History of Wilson County has been reprinted and is now on sale at Lebanon-Wilson County Library.  The first volume was written in 1961 and  updated in 1987.

Vol II    Written by Cumberland Archivist Frank Burns, it begins in 1980 and tracks an era not previously covered. [copies will be available January 20, 1999]
You can reserve your copy today.

 Volume 1 - $40.00
 Volume II - $35.00
 Volume I and II - $65.00

 Lebanon Wilson County Library
 Mt Juliet Public Library
 Watertown Public Library
 ==end of the newspaper notice=

On another subject (so to speak) I also saw an article in the Nashville paper a few weeks ago that Mrs. Frank Burns had died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident... Mr. and Mrs.Burns had moved to Texas some years ago.  For those who might not know of Frank Burns, he was one of the historians for Wilson County [note: I don't remember if it was in an official capacity or not], but he was the author of the above book on Wilson County, plus some more, I think....   I assume the designation of "Cumberland Archivist" before Mr. Burns' name means "Cumberland University (in Lebanon) Archivist"   I thought I had saved the article, but can't find it now.....if I do locate it, I will post it to the list....

Dear Nancy,

Frank is the archivist at Cumberland University.  The last several years he has spent several weeks in Lebanon a couple of times a year.  Frank was one of the youngest of the Wilson County History Associates who wrote the original History of Wilson County under the editorship of Dixon Merritt that was published in 1961.  Frank revised the original book (among other things, adding a much needed index) and now has written a second volume.  I believe he also still writes a column in the Wilson World.

Hi,

After stumbling on the list, subscribing for a week or two and lurking a bit I have found to my amazement that there are really people that are researching Wilson County. My ggf was James B. MOSER, (b Tn 9/1847) I have found him in the 1900 AND 1920 census along with Mary my ggm and my gf Milton Moser. I have had no luck in finding who James B. Mosers parents were. There is the MOSIER/MOSER conflict to contend with,as in the 1920 census, James son Kelly is now Kelly MOSIER. I visited the Nashville Archives in 1992 in hope of having some luck in figuring this out. Needless to say that didn't happen. Any direction or help that anyone could give would be more than appreciated. Have thought that possibly one or two of the Wison County books recently mentioned might steer me in one direction or another, any thoughts? Have been looking now for a number of years and can only make a few very limited guesses at who they might be.

 Thanks,
 Dennis Moser

Cumberland Presbyterian refers to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church which  is very prominent in the South, especially in Tennessee and Texas.  It was started by a group that broke off from the Presbyterian church.....there is a web site for the CP Church Archives in Memphis, TN and a web site which details the "birth" of the CP Church in Dickson County TN.  I can get both web sites for you if you need them....

It refers to a person who is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination.  A denomination that was formed as an outgrowth of the Great Awakening of 1800 when revivalism was rampant on the frontier, especially in Southern Kentucky and Tennessee.   Cumberland Presbyterians, Baptists, and  Methodists were very active in these revivals and well received among the people in these areas.   The Cumbeland Presbyterian Denomination still exhists. If you want to learn more about it, check the following web sites.   By the way Charlotte, there is at least one CP church in Austin.

Cumberland Presbyterian is a church denomination that was organized in Dickson Co., TN, February 4, 1810.  Three ministers in the Prebyterian church rejected certain doctrine and decided to form the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

I have a direct ancestor that was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and founded a church in Clarksville, TX.  This helps me understand why he has been referred to in that manner in several articles that were written about him.

Subject: [TNWILSON-L] Edwards / Henry Families

EDWARDS and HENRY are two Wilson County, Tenn. names.  Parts of these families each moved to Williamson County, Ill. (& some to Mo.) in the 1850s with stops in Kentucky in the 1830s and/or 1840s.

While looking through Ford & Nagle's site at
<http://users.erinet.com/31363/fordand.htm> I see they have several intesting EDWARDS and HENRY photos for sale which give some hints of relationships:

 A.  John EDWARDS, CDV by W. E. Johns of Lexington, Ky. (Same studio as #C-1 below, so John and Will must be related.

 B.  Rebecca HENRY EDWARDS, mother of William Edwards, Latour Studios, Sedalia, Missouri.

 C.  Will EDWARDS 1.  CDV by W. E. Johns of Lexington, Ky.
                  2.  CC by B____ Photo, Louisville 1887

 D.  John HENRY, uncle of William EDWARDS, taken in Indianapolos, Indiana.

A Carte de Visite (CDV) would like have been a photo from 1860s-1880s.
Cabinet Cards (CCs) are larger, and would have been 1880s-1910.

Don't know if these were originally Wilson County, TN families, but with the EDWARDS and HENRY connections, I thought I'd pass this information along.

New information I have indicates that John Mabry DONNEL who was born abt 1801 in Tennessee might have been the son of a DONALDSON (DONNELSON/DONELSON or perhaps Mc/Mac DONALD).

I believe that his family originated in the Carolinas, PA, maybe MD.

I would really like to find the parents of John Mabry DONNEL. Does anyone have a DONALDSON family with a John, b abt 1801 in TN?

Any other suggestions on my search?

John Mabry DONNEL married Elizabeth JERNIGAN abt 1819 and lived in Rutherford Co, TN until 1827/1829 when they relocated to Fayette Co, IL.

_The History of Wilson County, TN Volume II - Its Places, Its People, Its Progress_ , is subtitled _After a Decade 1980 - 1998_, and was originally published in 1998.  This is Volume TWO.

If I'm not mistaken, the original _History of Wilson County, TN_, which could be called Volume ONE, was published in 1961.  It was reprinted in 1976 with some editing and/or corrections noted.  This book, Volume One, was reprinted yet again (this time without editing) in 1998 to coincide with the publication of the new Volume Two.

Both books, Volumes I & II, are available from the public libraries in Wilson County.

HI I am new to this list As I have just been told that My WOOLARD family may have come from Wilson County, TN, I know from Census On My LuVicie b 1846 in  MO that her parents were born in One census TN another IL  Another WOOLARD researcher told me that she had found out that the Wayne Co.  MO WOOLARD'S were from Wilson Co. TN and then Saline Co, IL  at least it is a starting place.
What I do have is her father was Named ALFRED WOOLARD (from Cletis Ellenhouse, History of Kim, Area, Wayne Co. MO).  Cletis sent me the  information he had on LuVicie as she was a member of his book review and study grope so was able to learn a little about her. She married James Robert  CASEY In Wayne we have found an Alfred Woolard in MO in 1840 and Martha his wife as a widow in 1860 Census  I also have Nancy Casey b 1846 sister of James, Married John WOOLARD Not sure  of his relationship to LuVicey but since James and Nancy are brother and sister I am assuming that John is related to My LuVicey I just got the information that last night that My Woolard family may have been from Wilson County so don't have much information about Wilson with out  an age on Alfred makes it hard but would quest in the early 1800s any help or suggestions would really be appreciated  Than you

Well-guess if it sounds too good to be true-it is!!  Besides, there are TOO many US jobs going overseas!!  Pamela

Hi Pam,
I ordered microfilms from this Microfilm Expeditors and waited 5 weeks because I ordered 12 rolls at once...if I had ordered (I was told) one or two rolls I would have them  in the short time that was advertised. When they arrived, an archivist was visiting our library and he advised us not to order any like it again as they emitted chemicals which would ruin other microfilm which had been processed properly (ones that will last a lifetime) It seems the cheaper ones don't last, and you do get what you pay for.  When I last visited with the man in this company. He was in transit and planning to move the business to China for cheaper
labor, among other things. Just wanted to share our experience.  The film is okay - not extremely clear as others we have ordered and paid $20 for.  Judy in OK

The following entries are the LANE / LAIN, etc. households enumerated in Wilson County, TN during the 1850 Federal Census, according to Byron Sistler's 1850 Census - Tennessee.

I found it interesting that there were no families spelling their name LAYNE in Wilson Co. at that time.  Also, there were several LANE/LAINs enumerated in OTHER households.  They are included here.  In addition, I included one entry from Sumner Co., (Thornton & Fanny LANE) because of their Wilson Co. ties.
