Subject: [TNWILSON-L] Reuben WOOD & Jane CURREY
I have recently joined this list and have read all of the archived messages. I don't believe there are any messages regarding Reuben WOOD and Jane CURREY which are two of seven of my ancestors buried in the Sugg's Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Is there anyone else on this list that descends from Reuben WOOD?
Reuben WOOD (1787-1835) was s/o David WOOD & Jane ____. Reuben came from Randolph Co NC to Williamson Co TN where he m Jane CURREY 13 Nov 1810.
She was d/o John CURREY Jr. & Sarah CURREY (first cousins) who are also buried in Sugg's Creek. Shortly after their marriage, Reuben & Jane moved to Wilson Co TN where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Issue of Reuben & Jane:
1. John C. WOOD (1812-1860) m 21 Sep 1831 Wilson Co to Sarah W. DRENNAN. They moved to Texas Co MO.
2. Susannah Matthew WOOD (1813-1867) m 3 Mar 1836 Wilson Co to William Calvin ROBBINS. She is bur Sugg's Creek.
3. David F. WOOD (1816-1845) m 7 May 1835 Wilson Co to Ann B. BROWN.
He is bur Sugg's Creek.
4. Reuben McLinn WOOD (1817-?) m 29 Jul 1839 Wilson Co to Hester Ann OSBORN. No further info.
5. Jane Harriet WOOD (1820-?) m 30 Jul 1839 Wilson Co to Samuel D. YANDELL. They moved to Gibson Co TN.
6. Isaiah Brownlee WOOD (1824-1840) not married. Bur Sugg's Creek.
I hope to hear from a WOOD cousin.

HENRY ROBERTSON - made his will June 23, 1749, proved February Court, 1752. named the following: sons HIGDON, HENRY, PETER, LEWIS, 100 (?) acre tract on both sides of Choeyet Creek purchased of MARMADUKE KIMBROUGH for 100 lbs sterling the deed not yet delivered. If sale consumated, I leave 85 acres to PETER and 75 acres to son and executor, LEWIS; daughters DEBORAH ROBERTSON and TEMPERANCE WEST. Witnesses: A. J. SMITH, WILLIAM OGILVIE, CHRISTOPHER OGILVIE.
PETER ROBERTSON - (perhaps grandson of HENRY) - made his will December 12, 1823, proved November Court 1824. Bk F, p. 27. Looking for info on: William P. PARKER (b. in NC) married 26 January 1842 in Wilson Co., TN to Mary C. BRETT (b. in TN).
I'm guessing that Mary was the daughter of Bartholomew BRETT who was enumerated in the 1840 Census in Wilson County. Can anybody confirm or deny this?

William and Mary Brett PARKER were the parents of Hardin Murphy "Hardy" PARKER (13 Sep 1852 - 06 Mar 1915).
Hardy lived at least some of his adult life in Wilson Co., but eventually moved to Saundersville, Sumner Co. where he and, later, his wife Mary S. LANE (01 Jun 1859 - 08 Feb 1946) died.

Is this William PARKER possibly the son or nephew of Hardy Murfree Parker (b. 18 Nov 1803 in Hertford Co., NC)?
This Hardy Murfree Parker, along with siblings Mary Saunders Parker and John Parker were the children of King PARKER.

I would appreciate any help or info on either Mary BRETT or William PARKER.
Likewise, any information on Mary S. LANE or Hardy PARKER would be appreciated.

Does anyone have information on the (unrelated) McClendon and the Brown families of Wilson county?
My McClendon connection is from around mid 1800's ( Ann[a] Ross McClendon married Christopher S. Boner a wee bit before the Civil War - I believe Christopher and Ann[a] Ross are buried in Mt. Juliet, Ann[a] is possibly the daughter of an L.J. McClendon).
I have two Brown links and my connection is as follows:
Martha Jane Pulley born about 1857.
Married Wilson H. Brown
Martha's dad was:
William Pulley who was born around 1799 ( don't know where)
His first wife was Sarah (Bragg) who died between 1850 and 1854.
His second wife is my gggrandmother
Rebecca J. (Brown) Pulley.
William and Rebecca were married on 18-18-1854 in Davidson Co.,TN
I haven't been able to find Wilson or Rebecca's parents because there's too many Browns to search through in the census records -- esp. with all the initials the census takers used some years.

William Williamson (about 1770-after 1837) and wife Sarah "Blind Granny" moved from Buckingham Co., VA to Wilson County in 1820s.
Their children also came along:
Austin Williamson,
Robert Williamson,
Caroline Williamson (Mar. Jesse Coleman), and
Martha Williamson (mar. LeNeres Phelps).
Zachariah, Thomas, Wm. Henry, and Bethany Tyrie were also in the group and believed to be close relatives.
Most of the family moved to Caldwell Co., KY in 1850s and 1860s.

I'm looking to find the parents, of Lelah Yates ( b. Sept. 1894 ). She is listed in the 1900 census as living with DEMPSY EAKES ( as STEPFATHER - b. April 1878 ) and Lula (I presume is her mother). DEMPSY'S sister is AMANDA EAKES ( b. Janurary 1875) who is living with the family. Lula is abt. 10 yrs older than Demsy, in the 1900 census, they had been married 0 (?) yrs.
Lula is listed as having 2 children, 1 ( Lelah ) is still living.
1910 census lists LELAH YATES as a "border" with DAVE LIPSCOMB at FANNING ORPHAN SCHOOL - she is a pupil.
By 1920 she had married Joseph H. Boner ( b. 1891, in Wilson or Davidson Co., TN).
It is believed that both Lelah's true parents had passed away, by this time.
I have quite a bit of information on the Eakes family ( all from Wilson Co.,TN), through another connection in my family, but can find no reference to a DEMPSY or AMANDA EAKES , or Lula ...- and because of the time of Lelah's birth, I am not able to find her ( or knowingly her parents )on an earlier census.
Thanks for any help in trying to find Lelah's parents.

Subject: [TNWILSON-L] MCLIN and CLOPTON families in Wilson County

I have hit a brick wall with my g-g-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth MCLIN.
She's said to have been born in 1827 in Tennessee, and it may have been the Wilson County area.
She married Benjamin Michaux CLOPTON in Rutherford County in 1849. He was born in 1828 in Wilson County. Mary died in 1850, after less than a year's marriage, as a result of the birth of my g-grandmother, Mary Hester (Mollie) CLOPTON. Ben and Mollie ended up in Navarro County, Texas, where he married again and she married my g-grandfather, Jesse M. BARTLETT.
There appear to have been some MCLINS in Wilson County, Rutherford County, and perhaps Sumner County, but I don't know how they fit together and can't find any record of Mary.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information on the MCLIN or CLOPTON family.

I saw your recent posting on the Wilson Co. mailing list re: your Harkreader family.
This is an unusual last name and my aunt says that there was some relation on my greatgrandmother's side to Harkreaders.
Her name was Lucy Berta Robertson, born 18 Mar, 1872. I believe her father's name was Lute Robertson, but I don't know her mother's name. I know she had a brother named Charlie and a sister named Fannie, a sister whose married name was Mrs. Herman Heek, and a half-sister, Naomah, whose married name was Harris. Also, a brother known as Bud. Perhaps other siblings. I believe she was born in Wilson County, TN near Lebanon. I was told that her family originally came from Virginia and I believe that she may have been part Native American.

Martha Jane Pulley born about 1857.
Married Wilson H. Brown
Martha's dad was:William Pulley who was born around 1799 ( don't know where)
His first wife was Sarah (Bragg) who died between 1850 and 1854.
His second wife is my ggg-grandmother Rebecca J. (Brown) Pulley.
William and Rebecca were married on 18-18-1854 in Davidson Co.,TN
I haven't been able to find information on William Pulley's lineage...or that of Wilson or Rebecca Brown ( because of the great many Browns to search through in the census records -- esp. with all the initials the census takers used some years.)

I've just begun my search into the Grisham, Grissom line since my great grandmother was Molly Grisham who married Joseph Reed, son of Eli Reed. I haven't been able to get to research in Wilson County since I found out her name. It seems that my dad didn't know the name of his own grandmother!
Finally I found out when his oldest brother, Houston, remembered.

For the record, the parents of Thomas Harrison Lassater were in fact, Harmon Lassater (born in TN) and Elizabeth Watkins (born in TN). This information is taken from a copy of Thomas Harrison Lassater' s Death Certificate which I received from TN State Library & Archives yesterday. The second "s" is a new one on me. His direct descendants that I know of here in Wilson Co. today use just one.

Thomas H. Lassater's son Dayton signed the original certificate as informant on 26 February 1919. According to the certificate, Thomas died on 26 February 1919 at 3:00 am, in the 10th Civil District of Wilson Co., TN, in the village of Lebanon. He was born 19 June 1848, and was 70 years, 8 months, and 7 days old at his death. His occupation is listed as Farmer, and he was born in Tennessee.

The cause of death was "Chronic St__sti___l Ni_hritis" and contributory to his death, "Senility." While the contributory factor explains many things, <g> I can not decipher the actual cause of death. Anybody care to take a stab at it?

Finally, Cedar Grove is listed as the place of burial, and he was buried there on 27 Feb 1919. Seagraves is named as the Undertaker. I suppose Dr. Rhea was the attending physician, as his signature appears in the top right-hand corner.

Thank you. And I believe you are correct. I received two other replies with the same answer as yours, so I'm pretty confident that that is what killed Thomas. The Nephritis is absolutely correct. The Interstitial is so close that I'm going to go with it. It sure looks like an S instead of an I at the beginning of the word, but the "nterstitial" is right on the money. Maybe old Dr. Rhea just had a fancy way with his capital letter I.

There is an "Antony Owen" on the 1830 Wilson County Census Index. He would be on page 142 of that census. Maybe he's the father, maybe not.

The 1820 Wilson Co Census had the following Owens families listed:
Jeremiah Owens pg 405 1 male age 26-44 1 female age 16-25
John Owens pg 405 2 males under 10; 1 male 45 or over
1 female under 10; 1 female 26-44; 1 female 45 & over
Josiah Owens pg 415 2 males under 10; 2 males 10-15; 2 males 16-25

Lisa: I am not working on the Bell line, but I run into that surname all the time when researching my Edwards and O'Neal lines. My Edwards and O'Neals eventually ended up in Attilla, Williamson County, Illinois, 1850s, along with many other Wilson County, Tennessee families. The 1850 Williamson County, Illinois Census shows many surnames that are already familiar with Wilson County, Tennessee research: Caplinger, Bell, Midget, Henry, Edwards, O'Neal, and Starett. The Pleasant Grove United Methodist Graveyard in Attila, Illinois has many Caplinger, O'Neal, Grant, and Bell surnames. Maybe this will help you in some of your later research. Debbie

Hi, Brant:

This probably won't help, but it's all I've run across on Pulley. In Williamson County, Illinois Mrs. Sarah Pulley marries James O'Neal, 13 November 1851. These O'Neals were from Wilson County, Tennessee (possibly the Watertown area?) and moved into Williamson County, Illinois in the early 1850s. Perhaps this Mrs. Sarah Pulley's husband died in Illinois, as the widows remarried quickly in those days. This probably is of no help to you, but I thought I would mention it. Debbie

Here is the URL for Wilson Co. marrieages. It says 1733 to 1809 but it actually goes to 1832. There are some BELL'S and GRISSOM'S with seveal spelling variations. As a matter of fact there are a lot of names I see being researched on this list. I hope this helps someone.

Joede's gr-gr-grandfather ,Robert Knight, enlisted as a private in Capt. Adam Dale's Company, Col. Williams Y. Higgins Regiment during the War of 1812. In 1813-1814 General Andrew Jackson lead the Tennessee Militia against the Creek Nation in Alabama. Robert was killed at battle at Emuckfaw. We found an Emuckfaw Battleground on a map near Davidson, AL.

We would like to order Robert's pension papers from the Federal Archives but do not know what Regiment & company he was in. All we have is the names of the regiment & company commanders names which are listed above. Can someone tell us how to find the designation of those units?

Hello Again! The incentive for moving to Williamson County, Illinois was cheap land! My McCollister Edwards left Wilson County, TN about 1848, stopping in Muhlenberg County, KY for a couple of years, where his father had already long since settled. By 1854, McCollister Edwards was purchasing land in Williamson County, IL for 13 cents an acre from the Federal Government. The government was selling that land to encourage settlement.

From the "History of Williamson County, IL", I have copied the following, which may also give a lead or two: "Attila, now just a cluster of houses in Section 4 of Crab Orchard Township, was for nearly fifty years an important post office and trading center . . . . The name was inherited from the post office established July 29, 1854, in William N. Mitchell's farmhouse, a short distance southeast of the settlement that became Corinth. . . . William Nazareth Mitchell (1814-1879) came from Wilson County, Tennessee about 1830 to Frankfort, Franklin County, Illinois . . . . When Richard P. Dodds married Frances O'Neal (my note, AKA Fannie O'Neal), they opened a store at Attila, buying and packing tobacco for the Shawneetown/New Orleans market. . . . The little town became a thriving tobacco center, where long wagon trains pulled by oxen loaded with tobacco hogsheads weighing 1,500 pounds each started on their was to the Ohio River or the railroad at Marion. . . . A pessimistic neighbor thought Fanny and Dick Dodds made a poor choice of location and business, and from his remarks Attila was nicknamed "Poor-Do"."

Fannie O'Neal Dodds and her husband later moved to Wichita, Kansas. She was the daughter of Samuel C. O'Neal (b1818, prob Wilson Cty, TN, died 1910, buried Williamson Cty, IL).

If you find any land purchases you are interested in pursuing, you can get a copy of the original land patent. Once you receive the original land patent number which only appears on the document (and differs from the one on the data base) you can request a copy of the original APPLICATION for the patent, which sometimes offers very detailed information. In my case, the applications were very basic and offered nothing new, but it is worth a try.

Also, the Williamson County, Illinois Historical Society is excellent, and you should visit them in person if you ever have the opportunity.

Hello to all my new cousins... (and old cousins...NOT old agewise, but in time) My oldest son, Bill Goodman works for W A N T Radio in Lebanon (98.9 FM) and he called today to say that Linda Grandstaff of the Wilson County Archives was going to be interviewed by Coleman Walker on the 7 a.m. talk show on the station.. So here are some notes I made while listening to the show: The Wilson County Archives is now located in it's new building (which was formerly City offices).The buidling consists of 20 rooms (and 4 bathrooms) so they have plenty of room now to grow and acquire more of the old records. Some of the books with worn bindings have recently been re-bound... Some of their earliest records date back to 1802. (some of these are marriage records) They also now have the Chancery Court records dating back to 1837, which were saved from the trash heap by Mr. Vincent Sims when they were being discarded.... (Someone on the list had asked about old records that were thrown away and were now in private hands, so I guess this answers that question.) Mr. Sims had saved them all this time, but gave them to the Archives....as he said he knows they will be safe from being tossed out again..... Linda Grandstaff and Thomas Partlow are co-directors of the Archives....Linda is there Monday thru Thursday, and Mr. Partlow is there on Fridays..., but they are both in and out on their days off. They are still setting up the Archives, with a lot of work going on, such as new shelving, etc.... but Linda said there is a research room, and the door is open to anyone who wants to research, and they have already had lots of local people come thru, plus people from Florida, Mississippi and California. I am sure they would also welcome any volunteers who live in the area...... It was also mentioned on the talk show that Wilson County's Bicentennial will start being celebrated on October 26.... So the Archives plans to decorate their 90 foot hallway with pictures from the various communities of Wilson County. They are looking for photos of old schools, families, etc (which can be donated or loaned to them)....and they want to get copies of family histories to display for the Bicentennial. And they do plan to have a section for family histories that are donaated.... The street address is: 111 South College Street, Lebanon, TN 37087 (I think that zip is right, but may be 37088...Greg?) The telephone number is 615- 443-1993. (now if I could just get my son interested in family history, he could go to the Archives in his spare time and research for me.....<grin>......)

This genealogy is spooky stuff!! Just a few minutes ago I asked Greg if he knew a Linda Grandstaff of Lebanon? Hi, I am researching Joseph Guess and family. They lived in Middle Tn. from app. 1800-1820. I cannot locate the County they lived in, although there are marriages in Rutherford and Davidson. Dicey Owen, daughter of Feley Owen, married James Drinkard in Halifax Co., VA on 18 Oct 1797. Brackett Owen, security. In 1850, Dicey, age 70, lived alone in Wilson Co., TN. Nearby was Josiah Owen, age 68, and wife Ritter. Anthony Owen, 46, and family also in same District 14. Are any of the Owens of Wilson County related to Dicey? Need Dicey's death date. Dicey's daughter Charlotte Williamson also lived in Wilson County.

Ray Flowers: There were a lot of Flowers in Gibson Co. TN. My greatgrandfather, Benjamin Franklin Wilson b. 1811 in VA was in Wilson Co. TN in 1831-1840 that I know of. He then settled in Gibson Co. TN and he had Flowers neighbors. I have a little info on these Flowers.
